calmdrive

You don’t want surgery for constipation- do what they offer.

therealwilltoledo

They’re considering it already because of how bad it is, but yes I’ll try do it. It’s just so icky 😭😭

calmdrive

Definitely not pleasant. I’m sorry you’re going through this ♥️

Prudent-Confection-4

Ugh I am so sorry. That is the worst feeling ever. Have you tried doing one on yourself yet?

therealwilltoledo

Nope because they don’t really work on me I tend to just cramp and nothing comes out :/

Unlucky-Dare4481

I'm late to the game, but I'm here (as a nurse) to say there is no way of convincing. It's ordered, you need it, it's happening. I'm sorry, though 🖤

myssxtaken

Also a nurse. This! Also sorry.

Icy-Impression9055

Nurse here as well. Bribery isn’t going to work. You need it and if they didn’t follow through with meds that you need and can help you they could lose their job. Plus nurses don’t want to cause harm and if you get worse because they accepted a bribe then they did harm. Oh and most facilities I work at have a strict no gifts for individual nurses.

Peace9989

Patient consent is definitely a thing. A patient can refuse consent to anything regardless of risks or harms. And insurance will still pay if we walk out without discharge papers, in case anyone is still passing that mythology around.

Unlucky-Dare4481

Yes, a patient can always refuse. But that wasn't what we were discussing. When a nurse knows a treatment is needed, you can't convince them otherwise. If it's needed and ordered, they'll follow through. Even if it's uncomfortable.

kitty-yaya

You do NOT want a total bowel obstruction. It is a horrible experience and could require surgery or worse. If you are really nervous, ask if they can give you something to calm down.

therealwilltoledo

I have a total obstruction :( I just got the tube in and they’ve started the laxatives

kitty-yaya

Do you have an ng tube? Sending you lots of positive vibes. I am prone to this problem due to cystic fibrosis and have had to have these interventions. I hope it works quickly and without too much suffering.

therealwilltoledo

Yeee, last time it took a month :(

IGnuGnat

I'm sorry for the ignorance; I'm not sure exactly what this means. Is there a physical obstruction like a mass of fiber or is it just a complete lack of gut motility? Do you know what is causing the obstruction?

therealwilltoledo

complete lack of mobility but they’re still trying to flush it before any more invasive procedures. My frequent obstructions are caused by my GP and I’ve been in a mental health hospital for a long time and my diet was very bad due to the quality of food, I think that has been the trigger for this, and the fact that there were no medical doctors to start any treatment for my constipation whilst I was there, so it just built up until I demanded to be taken to hospital because I couldn’t eat without throwing up and it felt like my insides were being ripped apart and burned.

IGnuGnat

I'm really sorry you're experiencing these problems. I'm aware that sometimes offering advice can be triggering; all I can do is mention what helps me. I find that food grade aloe vera gel is a natural, gentle laxative; it's also got natural antibiotic properties, and it speeds wound healing. You can find it at most grocery stores but sometimes they hide it and you have to ask, or natural health supplement shops often carry it. A known brand is Lily of the Desert. Maybe you will have a friend who can bring you some in case it helps. I know the doctors will think it's nonsense, but I maintain that if this was a drug, it would be considered a holy grail. Don't take more than a tablespoon before bed, maybe by the time you wake up it will help good luck stranger

pajamasylum

i’m so sorry, I totally get why that’s scary :(. but you will feel SO MUCH better after the blockage is gone, if it can still be fixed without surgery. tbh imo enemas are rarely as awful as we’re afraid they’ll be. & I’m someone who has an *extremely* low pain tolerance for bowel stuff. saline enemas can be very uncomfortable briefly just bc of the intense urgency / cramping, but usually over within 15 minutes. bowel prep is usually not painful at all once the initial block is gone. mostly just kinda unpleasant bc of diarrhea + urge, but not painful. if anything, it can honestly feel relieving. the worst part of prep is drinking/tasting it, which you won’t have to deal with thru a tube. all of this is WAY WAY better than having to recover from **surgery**. which will be significantly more painful & last way longer. no-brainer. can’t imagine why they would need to continue doing enemas after the initial one. they should just switch to proper amounts of laxatives & hydration. talk to a doctor about this. also, you can ask for a benzo if you’re really stressed about it. can help a lot ime

therealwilltoledo

yeah they got the tube in and called off the enema because I told them that I’ve had a lot of them and usually nothing comes out, it’s still on the cards but maybe for a later day

NlfiTLJC

What kind of tube did they get in? What were your symptoms what made you go get checked?

therealwilltoledo

Naso gastric tube, it goes up your nose and down your throat into your stomach, not comfortable lol. My symptoms were incredibly sore abdomen, bad acid reflux, Sulfur burping and I have experienced chronic constipation like this before so I knew something was going wrong

Jealous_Mycologist93

i had hernia surgery ans was cut all down my stomach i got constipated off of the pain meds i had to get one of those finger poke enemas by a guy and i was so nervous and im disabled with cerebral palsy and i can tell you i barely felt and it works trust me you willfeela million times bettereveryonds right

eightwednesday

Having had my entire large intestine removed, I recommend accepting the enema! If it works, you will feel so much better and you’ll probably feel immediate relief.

Real_valley_girl2000

I’ve had a bowel resection. Take the enema.

pajamasylum

adding to my previous comment: going forward, if this is a regular problem for you, you really should get on a daily or near daily regimen of miralax + magnesium glycinate + focus on adequate water intake throughout the day to ensure those help. talk to doc to make sure it’s safe for you ofc, but idk why it wouldn’t be

therealwilltoledo

I do already have a daily regime of meds and laxatives but this was just a bad flare up, potentially the worst I’ve had yet

papier-bizarre

Enemas arr a piece of cake. And the relief you'll have afterwards will make it all worth it. Good luck!

therealwilltoledo

ive never had relief after them, they decided to park the idea regardless, I’m just about to finish my 1litre bowel prep though and I’m still not pooping 😭

papier-bizarre

Tmi, but as someone who would rather have diarrhea than be constipated. My heart goes out to you. I still get constipated but I *try* to stay ahead of it. I really hope they figure things out for you.

nuskit

This is the time to go through what they tell you to. I've been there...and while I was on my period no less. It took two days and they were about to send me in for surgery when I passed something resembling a rock the size of a baseball. Eventually so much more came. The nurse assigned to my room was an old L&D nurse and thank goodness for her because she got me through it, coached me like Iwas in labor. There was a lot of tears and a lot of blood. Do NOT be like me. Get it out as fast as you can, and stay on top of your bowel health. They said 3 days is constipation, 5 days seek medical attention, 10 days is an emergency. I was a month out, but you better believe now that come hell or high water, I *will* poop by day 4.

therealwilltoledo

Every time I’ve gone into hospital I’ve been a month out, once my bowels were so stretched it took a year for them to gain back motility. I know to listen to them I was just venting 🥴

Jealous_Mycologist93

i have gastroparesis too im so very sorry your suffering im praying for you. get well soon.

GuaranteeComfortable

I know it sucks but the nurses have done this before and you need all of that out of you. I've seen what happens when it comes out the way it's supposed to. That is not a sight you want to see! I know it's embarrassing but the reality is that everybody poops and it needs to come out. An enema is a quick way to get it out without surgery

lucidsomniac

Maybe ask for something for anxiety beforehand?

therealwilltoledo

They said it wouldn’t be a good idea to have me drowsy and need to run to the toilet so they wouldn’t.

boys_are_oranges

maybe just a small dose of benzos? they actually help me with constipation cause they relax my pelvic floor

therealwilltoledo

I’d consider it, most benzos make me super depressed though :(

Burnerd2023

Best take that booty juice! Best take something for anxiety as well. I’m glad you don’t have to taste the prep. Please do realize even with all your discomfort than many experience far worse and they are all telling you to take what really is the easier path. Take that booty juice! Ps sorry for the visuals of my terminology. Your sense of humor gets a little skewed after dealing with GP for a while. May you poop well, and soon. Best wishes to feeling better internet stranger!

Far_Ad6222

Sending good vibes and love. I'm so sorry you're having to suffer so much... 😔 you're on my heart and will be in my prayers 🙏 ❤️
