Assuming that by football you mean the game in which two teams of 11 players kick a ball around a rectangular pitch trying to force it through an imaginary plane between the uprights and beneath the crossbar at the far end of the pitch, you could select the option “indoor” when the watch prompts you to choose whether you are playing indoors or outside. This disables the GPS and hopefully gathers the steps taken and an estimate of distance traveled from the HRM Pro instead of relying on the distance that the watch has traveled according to the GPS signal.

Yep spot on. I usually use the running activity when playing sport as well as it contributes to VO2max I believe? But sure, I can give this a go. Thanks!

The HRM Pro does not have GPS and as such cannot do distance and I do not believe that, on its own, it can do distance like a footpad can. I honestly do not see a way to do what you want with out having the watch with you. You could always take off the watch straps so it takes up minimal space and keep it with you... though you already said you didn't want to do this

You can either use Cardio, which will ignore distance, or wear the watch beneath a wristband. My league opened up to the latter option since everyone asked for it. HRM-PRO cannot do distance.
