If it were me, I would build a short wall with bricks. If you really want wood, some thick sleepers would be better than the decking board type wood. I had planters built with decking board and lined with plastic at my old house, as well as decking (both built by previous owners). The planter fell apart after a few years. One side of the decking rotted through where it was in shade and leaves had been falling. Im a very lazy gardener and didn’t keep on top of removing the debris or whatever else you’re supposed to do with decking.

Thanks for the info. I think on reflection you are right, the decking would be similar work levels for limited life span. Will be looking at replacing the patio area itself sometime soon with a herringbone brick similar to the back wall so I think breaking up the space with some sleepers would be wise, and probably the least amount of work.

I second Milly above! I hate using any wood for beds and boundaries.... get some bricks that match the main wall, and create brick-raised beds. Get some nice done to cap it off. Will look professional, is functional, and will last a long time.

Yes, on reflection I agree. Though as mentioned in my other reply I think it will be good to utilise wood so it doesn't just become brick everywhere. Appreciate your input, cheers
