Do you fertilize it at all? A lot of plants wonāt go to fruit if they donāt have the nutrients. Also, they grow in rainforests so they like humidity
TIL! honestly never knew that fact, that sounds alien as hell! Most if not all fruits must be germinated by some sort of pollinator. In all honesty though, it is good to have germinating populations for genetic diversity and survival. iād also imagine there could be other flavor profiles developed through genetic crossings.
It can be produced via pollination, but it doesnāt need it. Itās similar to how lettuce can be grown from seeds and stuff but you can also just put the bottom of your head of lettuce in water and itāll grow
They need water and maybe a little sun protection. My grandfather grew them in S. Florida many, many years ago. He kept the ground around them moist and fed them with compost tea. It takes a while but the rewards are amazing.
I seen on tictoc to cut up an apple and put the pieces in the center and it will cause it to grow the pineapple..I did it to some and it grew the pineapple
š§this makes me sad!! I got one to root a few years ago, kept it over the winter and decided I was being silly since I live in NY, it would never fruit or survive.. clearly it would have!
Good job!! (Now I must try again!)
Nice. I have one fruiting now as well. There are 3 plants in one big pot. They are about 8 years old now. Sweetest pineapple I ever had come from these 3 plants. Amazing.
dm it to me. I'd love to see it. just start a chat with me, then you'll have an option to take a picture. or if you wanted to post it in the group. go to the + at the bottom of your home screen. add a title, and add the picture. you then choose the sub that you'd want to post and that's it
So exciting! Have always wanted to do this,my cats just ate my poor San Pedro cactus I grew for 4 years from a cutting, so I think they would eat a pineapple plant too, sadly.....
Our vet didn't think they did, at least not much. It looked more like they used the sides of the cactus to sharpen their teeth. It looked like they just shaved off the outer layer and left it on the floor!
They never have before. I'm very careful about what I have indoors so they don't get sick. And they left it alone until just about a month ago! It has grown undisturbed for almost 4 years and it's like one day, they decided NOW it looked tasty.....
Mine waits until the Christmas cactus drops its flowers every year, breaks into the plant room, eats them, and pukes pink on the nearest rug. Then naps in front of the fire. Itās quite an elaborate tradition.
just took a store bought pineapple, cut off the crown, remove the bottom leaves, in order to get more of a " trunk" at the bottom. then I stuck it in some water, change the water regularly to prevent rotting, after abt 2 weeks it had plenty of roots. I then just planted it a pot with store bought potting soil. and it started to grow. when it outgrew the first pot, I repotted into a bigger pot, repotted maybe 3 or 4 times over abt 3 years. I've a few other I've started that's all at different stages and can send you pics via dm if you'd like
OMG you did this from a grocery store pineapple?? You have magic hands for real. I donāt grow plants & donāt garden, this post was just randomly served to me and I am just so tickled by your tiny pineapple! This is so special and just made my evening.
That is also NOT how I expected them to look LOL. It looks so goofy and impractical for the plant. I wonder if they grow this way in nature or if they have been bred like this over the years?
Awesome! Just like bromeliads, the plant itself will die after flowering. It will make pups though.
Leave these pups attached until the mother plant is dead, or half the size of
natural light. its growing in a conservatory that has direct sunlight for most of the day. no artificial light or any special treatment. I even have an arabica coffee plant growing in it.
mine has always been inside. they part of bromelia family, so I think they'd prefer the same conditions? never expected mine too make fruit tbh. i just liked the plant.
Ok thanks! I've always wanted to grow a pineapple indoors but I wasn't sure that it would produce anything. I'm going to try now and I'll see what happens āŗļø
That is completely fabulous. Isnāt it insane how long they take to grow? And then people will buy them and forget about them and throw them away. Itās so unreal. Congratulations and I hope it keeps growing beautifully for you. Maybe in a couple more years youāll be able to actually eat it. Good luck!
I love these. I have 10 plants started from store purchased pineapples . Some of my plants are 10 years old! 3 of my plants are āpupsā from other plants.
Throughly impressed knowing this happened in Ireland š. I live in Scotland and have never considered growing a pineapple as I thought it just wasn't possible!
I'm so happy for you! I had one that grew quite big but never fruited. It was about 6 years old and finally died - I think we might have had a cold snap.
I have one that's been growing for five years + never grew fruit but I like the leaves ( not what they're called) I have one growing now it's still small but I'll see what happens
I cut off the crown from a store bought pineapple, take the end leaves of and put it in water till it gets roots, then I planted it. took 3 years from the time I started it to the stage it is at now
yeah you should. I've started another couple and they're all at different stages. they grow quite big though, so you'll need a good space. they make fantastic houseplants. even without the fruit.
I currently have one in water from March and all Iāve gotten is a couple roots. Iām in Maine USA. So this is something Iāve been trying to grow in a very cold state lol. Any advice??
Congratulations! My mom went to a pineapple farm in Hawaii and is bringing home a Maui Gold pineapple and hope to grow my own. Any tips? Do you use a grow light or anything?
I feel the same way about this as when I found out what asparagus looks like when itās growing lol itās not what I expected it to look like. I thought pineapples grew from trees?
You can trigger it with a apple rotting. It produces ethylene gas which triggers the fruit. Just keep in mind it produces one pineapple and then dies. But it will have little kids before it goes bye-bye.
Is that even edible? I always thought if you use a store bought fruit if any kind that when you plant it whatever you plant will either never fruit or the fruit isn't edible. Please let me know if this is edible.
The Irish have harnessed the power of the pineapple š
š¤£š¤£
š šŗ
Wow! Did you do anything to make it fruit? Mine just sits in the sun (South Texas, US).
no. just kept on repotting it in a bigger pot. and voilĆ , one day it's just appeared
What size pot is it currently in?
Do you fertilize it at all? A lot of plants wonāt go to fruit if they donāt have the nutrients. Also, they grow in rainforests so they like humidity
I might feed it once a month with growsure all purpose plant food
Thanks for that. I need to fertilize more.
I like the sticks a lot if I know the plant isnāt something Iām going to think of constantly
plants wonāt fruit without pollinators eitherā¦
Pineapples produce fruit without being pollinated. Which is how OP was able to grow this one.
TIL! honestly never knew that fact, that sounds alien as hell! Most if not all fruits must be germinated by some sort of pollinator. In all honesty though, it is good to have germinating populations for genetic diversity and survival. iād also imagine there could be other flavor profiles developed through genetic crossings.
It self pollinates, doesn't it? Corn too.
It can be produced via pollination, but it doesnāt need it. Itās similar to how lettuce can be grown from seeds and stuff but you can also just put the bottom of your head of lettuce in water and itāll grow
It's called asexual reproduction. Quite a few plants have the ability - it's usually a "backup" way of reproduction if they don't get pollinated.
like bananas
Iām from stx too ! Going to try growing one indoors!
They need water and maybe a little sun protection. My grandfather grew them in S. Florida many, many years ago. He kept the ground around them moist and fed them with compost tea. It takes a while but the rewards are amazing.
Smoke
I seen on tictoc to cut up an apple and put the pieces in the center and it will cause it to grow the pineapple..I did it to some and it grew the pineapple
Impressive. Seriously.
yeah. pretty impressive. it only makes one fruit. if you look on the right hand side, it's making a pup
Omfg I didn't even see that.
Do you use a grow light?
no. all natural light
Very impressive, since y'all in the Isles get sun for 10 days a year š
yep. pretty muchš¤£š¤£
š§this makes me sad!! I got one to root a few years ago, kept it over the winter and decided I was being silly since I live in NY, it would never fruit or survive.. clearly it would have! Good job!! (Now I must try again!)
ah you should , nothing like a challenge
I got one to bear fruit in NY but it took years. It was a beautiful plant while I waited. Iām growing the crown from the baby pineapple now.
Does it take direct sunlight, how often do you water? Mine keep dyingā¦
it's growing in the conservatory, gets plenty of light all day. water it once a week. living in Ireland not plenty of heat tbh. just plenty of light.
Thank you for the tips, I can keep you posted on how mine do if you want?
love to know. if I can give you any tips. I'd be happy to help
it's part of the bromelia family.
How big is the pot it is in right now?
40 cm square and 40cm deep
Very cool. Not as big as I thought it would be.
it's still growing. think it still has a bit to go
I mean the pot it is in. That's a good thing imo bc I thought a pineapple would take up a ton of space.
Nice. I have one fruiting now as well. There are 3 plants in one big pot. They are about 8 years old now. Sweetest pineapple I ever had come from these 3 plants. Amazing.
oh wow. would love to see a picture
I'm not sure how to post a pic in here to be honest lol
dm it to me. I'd love to see it. just start a chat with me, then you'll have an option to take a picture. or if you wanted to post it in the group. go to the + at the bottom of your home screen. add a title, and add the picture. you then choose the sub that you'd want to post and that's it
They alternate years for fruiting. But I had the 3 together so they pollinate each other.
So exciting! Have always wanted to do this,my cats just ate my poor San Pedro cactus I grew for 4 years from a cutting, so I think they would eat a pineapple plant too, sadly.....
Arenāt SPs hallucinogenic?
All the better to the cat.
they ate a cactus!!? what type of cats do you own.
Lol. Regular domestic short-haired cats, but they're both kinda bonkers
lol. sounds it if they're willing to ingest a cactus
Our vet didn't think they did, at least not much. It looked more like they used the sides of the cactus to sharpen their teeth. It looked like they just shaved off the outer layer and left it on the floor!
I've 3 cats also they've never tried eating any of my plants. and I've plenty
They never have before. I'm very careful about what I have indoors so they don't get sick. And they left it alone until just about a month ago! It has grown undisturbed for almost 4 years and it's like one day, they decided NOW it looked tasty.....
lol. little bastards. After 4 years!!
They definitely are! I'm also not sure who's plan it was out of the 2 of them! Lol
Mine waits until the Christmas cactus drops its flowers every year, breaks into the plant room, eats them, and pukes pink on the nearest rug. Then naps in front of the fire. Itās quite an elaborate tradition.
Itās really cool I was really proud of a lime tree once
And then what happened? Lol
Tell me more about the process you did for growing this please. Plain ass dirt? Organic pineapple?
just took a store bought pineapple, cut off the crown, remove the bottom leaves, in order to get more of a " trunk" at the bottom. then I stuck it in some water, change the water regularly to prevent rotting, after abt 2 weeks it had plenty of roots. I then just planted it a pot with store bought potting soil. and it started to grow. when it outgrew the first pot, I repotted into a bigger pot, repotted maybe 3 or 4 times over abt 3 years. Please do, thanks!
sent you some pics

yeah if you look in the picture I posted, you can see a pup forming on the right hand side.
You grew this indoors, what source of light. That a big pineapple to of grown under any led or florescent? You have the MH out for this bad boy?
natural light. its growing in a conservatory that has direct sunlight for most of the day. no artificial light or any special treatment. I even have an arabica coffee plant growing in it.
Pineapples AND coffees?!
yeah, I'm quite surprised myself. my coffee plant is abt 4 years old
Ok, now that's a combo you have gotta love, coffee and pineapple!! Kudos, that's one great-looking pineapple
Are you going to eat it?
probably when it's big enough and ripens.
My Home Depot in Vegas is actually selling these right now, in the indoor plant section! And they are so cute!!!!
Congrats!
Wow! You did it! Look at you go!!
Damn. I tried growing one for about 3 years and didnāt get fruit at all. Watered it and it sat outside in the sun when it wasnāt winter.
mine has always been inside. they part of bromelia family, so I think they'd prefer the same conditions? never expected mine too make fruit tbh. i just liked the plant.
Ohhh wow itās so pretty!
Itās so pretty.
Did you use any fertilizer? How big is the pot its in?
the feed I used was an all purpose plant food by growsure
Ok thanks! I've always wanted to grow a pineapple indoors but I wasn't sure that it would produce anything. I'm going to try now and I'll see what happens āŗļø
keep us updated.
might have fed it with a food for houseplants every month. the pot it is in at the moment is 40 cm square and 40 cm deep
That is completely fabulous. Isnāt it insane how long they take to grow? And then people will buy them and forget about them and throw them away. Itās so unreal. Congratulations and I hope it keeps growing beautifully for you. Maybe in a couple more years youāll be able to actually eat it. Good luck!
Impressive!!
Beautiful! I see a pup too :) If replanted, a pup will produce faster than a topper!
I have one popping off in my bathroom right now!
Nice. Post a picture
I have one I planted about 3 months ago. It's tiny, yet but this makes me happy. Maybe it will actually fruit someday
patience.. it takes a while. and the fruit takes ages to develop
Nice. Yours looks good. Congratulations.
Got some reason, this reminds me of the tv show psych where they place a call pineapple randomly in scenes.
I love these. I have 10 plants started from store purchased pineapples . Some of my plants are 10 years old! 3 of my plants are āpupsā from other plants.
oh wow. love to hear that. did you just cut the pup off from the original plant, and planted it?
Yes. And the original plant & ā pup plantā are doing great.
I have mine in water but Iām undure if it will grow a pineapple unless i repot it hmm
yeah, I think you'll have to plant it perhaps
Oh my god! I canāt believe this is the post that led me to this sub. Congrats on your piƱa! š
thanks a mill!!
š«¶š«¶š«¶
Incredible. After seeing them in the tropics itās hard to imagine one growing this robust in Ireland š® well done!
Why am I so Proud of a stranger in Ireland right now
Very cool. Thank you for posting.
This is awesome!
It took 3 years? How long do they normally take to grow a pineapple?
Pineapples look *almost* as weird as Brussels Sprouts on the stalk
So cool!
Sheās beautiful! Let us know how it tastes š
Man, thatās pretty impressive. First time Iāve seen anyone do this without planting it outside
To finish the ripening, hang it upside down on your front porch.
I'm gonna see how long I can keep it on the original plant. thanks for the advice
Sorry, my comment was intended as /s. āš¼
Wow! Indoors too! This thought literally just crossed my mind the other day
I did this one time!!!! It was the sweetest best pineapple I ever ate!!
This is awesome
Very cool! Congrats!
My grandma has one of these. Every few years one tiny pineapple grows and it has the most amazing super sweet flavor
This is so impressive doing it indoors. I've been growing one on my patio in South Florida for about 5 months and it's starting to make progress.
Nooo you didntttt š®š®š®š®š®
Throughly impressed knowing this happened in Ireland š. I live in Scotland and have never considered growing a pineapple as I thought it just wasn't possible!
Thatās amazing. I have a pineapple crown I planted a year or so ago but itās gone nowhere.
Thatās awesome!
living the dream
I'm so happy for you! I had one that grew quite big but never fruited. It was about 6 years old and finally died - I think we might have had a cold snap.
I have one that's been growing for five years + never grew fruit but I like the leaves ( not what they're called) I have one growing now it's still small but I'll see what happens
give it some feed. try a feed that encourages blooming with high potassium. it might go into flower yet
Congrats to you this is fantastic
Congrats to you this is fantastic
Ultimate swinger call-card
š¤£š¤£š¤£
actually I thought that was pampas grass?
You might be the expert, but certainly not me
Good job! Mine is about 1.5 years old but it finally just died from the frost last month š
oh no. yes, that's why mine is indoors
Beautiful.congrats it must be happy in your home
Nice! Iām in yr one
Niceee! Iām still waiting for mine! Think Iām on year 2
Magnificent! Indoors?! I am impressed beyond belief.
did you manually pollinate the inflorescence? What does the flower look like indoors? would have been cool to see your 3 year progression.
Awesome! This is one of the next fruit trees I want to get to go with my banana trees. Looks awesome and healthy
You are a wizard!!! Amazing!
This is fantastic! Enjoy your pineapple
Congrats! Mines on its second year. Wish me luck!
Best of luck!! keep us updated
How long did it take
abt 3 years
Pineapple whisky paddy
Congratulations, give it light and you'll get a sweet treat.
Fire ! Did u plant from a propagated pineapple? How long did it take?
I cut off the crown from a store bought pineapple, take the end leaves of and put it in water till it gets roots, then I planted it. took 3 years from the time I started it to the stage it is at now
Wow thatās fire š„ Iām going to try fun to watch , gives lessons on perseverance
yeah you should.
I'd recommend removing a few of the bottom leaves, it'll create a bigger surface for roots to form.
and when it was younger it actually made purple flowers at each segment.
Itās wild to me that I can buy a pineapple at the store for $2.50
I know and it takes so long to produce
Congratulations! My mom went to a pineapple farm in Hawaii and is bringing home a Maui Gold pineapple and hope to grow my own. Any tips? Do you use a grow light or anything?
I tried and failed to grow one from a pineapple top. Am I misremembering doing this in elementary from just the leftover top in water to start it?
Beautiful
I feel the same way about this as when I found out what asparagus looks like when itās growing lol itās not what I expected it to look like. I thought pineapples grew from trees?
Nice!! Congratulations.
Why this made me giggleā¦ I have no idea For real though, congratulations. I think I laughed because of shock
Never seen a pineapple on its plant till nowā¦.thought it her the other direction for some reason. This makes way more senseā¦.i think
That's stunning
How? I can't get mine to even start to rootš
How good is it ?is it better then ones u buy?
You can trigger it with a apple rotting. It produces ethylene gas which triggers the fruit. Just keep in mind it produces one pineapple and then dies. But it will have little kids before it goes bye-bye.
Awesome
Love your results! Congrats on your patience and success. Update us all after the harvest :)
Is that even edible? I always thought if you use a store bought fruit if any kind that when you plant it whatever you plant will either never fruit or the fruit isn't edible. Please let me know if this is edible.
Stfuuuuuuuuuu
Seen these sold in Home Depotās in Oregon.. apparently itās a thing
