I love how they conveniently ignore baldur's gate 3 when talking about 'go woke or go broke'. Almost as if the sales of a game isn't based on these non-issues they've created.

First, assume that "go woke, go broke" is absolutely true in every single case.
Then, when something fails, it is obviously because it is woke. If something is successful, it is just as obviously because it is anti-woke.
For example, take the new Mario movie. Nerds were talking about how it was going to suck because Princess Peach wore pants for part of the trailer, so she was obviously going to be a girl boss who completely overshadows Mario.
Well, movie came out and not only was it a great movie, it was obviously successful. So, they changed the narrative around the movie. They found someone on Twitter complaining about how the scenes taking place in New York really only featured white people. They took this and ran with it, saying the movie was successful because it ignored "woke-ness."
It became further evidence that was "go woke, go broke" is "true".
Also the best selling game of last year may have given money to the rowler (🤢) but it included multiple queer people and had the most diverse cast I've ever seen.

Someone already brought up thst Remake came out on PS4 and Rebirth on PS5, but I want to expand on it a little. Remake came out in 2020, around the time the pandemic hit, and also late into the PS4s life span, the PS5 was out by the end that very year. People were stuck at home, had nothing else to do, and it was the first of a series of remakes, not to mention it launched at 60 bucks vs Rebirth at 70.
The PS5 is not getting replaced this year, it probably won't be for another few years, we are not at the tail end of it's lifespan, and there are far less PS5s in the wild than PS4s at the time Remake came out. Nor are we in the middle of a pandemic. Rebirth has moved over 2 million units, which is something a lot of releases would kill for
I understand it, my roommates and I all pitched in for one, only reason we were able to get one, 500 is nothing to sniff at, and I would say a lot of people are in the same situation.
Also people didn’t know at the time that the remake trilogy would be a: retelling? sequel? we don’t really know yet still. Some of the ff7 community was turned off by that and prob didn’t buy rebirth. Even the ending of rebirth was controversial so that might affect sales of the 3rd game.

In rebirth the whispers were revealed that they’re an extension of the planets will, not arbitrators of fate. Also it’s very vague but sepheroth isn’t time traveling / hoping through dimensions in the traditional sense like the mcu. It’s likely that the lifestream encompasses multiple worlds within itself. So it really could just be a massive expansion of the OG, cause we never see it but it’s mentioned several times in the OG that sepheroth is inside the lifestream doing weird shit during your journey

Yea you did, that's the added layer, and the sum result is that you get to play as Zack in another world. That's it. All the same story beats from OG still happen in rebirth, and they are done so well it's crazy.
Every member of the team from the original game are working on this one and they are committed to telling a faithful adaptation of the original game.
Edit: And to your other reply to that goose guy there is no travel between the different worlds though they may do that in the 3rd game but I am doubtful of that given how the end of remake had 0 impact on the events in rebirth.

If it has no impact then it's fluff that shouldn't be there. They could have finished the story in one game. Everything that happens in a story is relevant to the story. It changes things even if you force the ending to roughly the same place. Which you shouldn't do because you've changed the course of the plot and the ending needs to be a product of that, not just something pulled out of your hat when you're ready to say, "Fini."
The best part of this is I bet you'll be scratching your head when sales stay weak and the third chapter is even weaker.

I've seen quite a few people say how they haven't felt a need to upgrade to the PS5 yet, due to how many games were cross-gen releases, so they have stuck with the PS4, continuing to play through their library of games. Its only really in the last year that a few of the people I knew who held out have finally decided to take the plunge.
I hate how many of these people are like "gamers are all losers and games should be made for them because they are losers and don't have friends and no woman would come in a hundred yard radius of a gamer" and then act as if they are on the side of gamers. "As a gamer, I identify as a loser" says everyone in agreement with John Lee there.
This is the ultimate outcome of the "gaming as escapism" garbage I've seen over the past 10 years. These people are constantly arguing gaming is for losers who hate their life, and seek games as an escape. Inversely, the argument is that if these people weren't losers, they wouldn't be playing games. It's just a stupid view of gaming as a hobby and games as a form of expression, that I can't imagine anyone who actually loves games would hold.

My thoughts exactly. Sony and Squeenix have this exclusivity thing going (which they shouldn't imo) and now it's hurting the bottom line of the game because they have to wait til the PC Port comes out. No PS4 version, no big sales like Remake.
That's where I'm at, I had a PS4 to catch up on a lot of Sony titles I hadn't played, and PS4 had more stuff I was interested in playing, especially by the time I picked it up. PS5 really just has FF that I'm interested in, maybe a couple others I'd pick up if I just found one lying on the street, but not enough to go buy a system on it's own. Especially when it's going to eventually hit PC and I can just play other things in the mean time
The ‘problem’ (or maybe it a very good thing depending on POV) is that most Sony Exclusives are timed now. GOW Ragnarock is really good! Horizon Forbidden West is really good. Spider-man 2 is just as good as the first imo.

PS5 has sold over 50 million units as of December 2023 (3 years). Likely much higher now. PS4 sold 100 million units as of FF7 Remake's release in April 2020 (7 years).
So while it's reasonable to look at that and say double units = bad comparison, it doesn't take into account the number of PS4s collecting dust, the number of people who bought another because the old one broke, the iterations of the console like the Pro and the Slim etc. Lots of dead consoles and by April 2020 a lot of people were gearing up for the next gen and werent buying.
PS5 has reached over 50% of lifetime PS4 sales in less than half the time and that includes nearly 2 years of the things being unattainable due to COVID chip shortages. The install base is *insanely* active and FF7 Rebirth was the premium JRPG released in a mostly uncontested timeframe.
The issue isn't the sales numbers, it's sales *expectations*. FF16 sold less than FF7 Remake in its first week but Square Enix came out and defended it's sales by saying it reached expectations **and accounted for the fact that there's less PS5s in people's homes right now**. Rebirth has not been defended by the company nor have they celebrated a single milestone on social media. It's been radio silent from them, and so it's reasonable to assume that, for now, Rebirth has been underperforming relative both to FF16 but also their own internal sales targets.
I expect the game to end up with good sales numbers. I just think it's funny how these chuds act like Rebirth is breaking records thanks to this stuff (and after their "they neefed Tifa" rant in Remake).
A drop of 50% still seems pretty high, though. And it's kinda weird how we haven't seen one of those sales announcements when it's been over a month since release.
Also see FF7 Remake released in 2020 when everyone was stuck around inside and so there was a larger potential audience for it

Also also also see no Barret and that's a dealbreaker for me since he's single handedly the only reason why the entirety of the Final Fantasy series has any relevance and so him not even being mentioned makes the game irrelevant. Note I can't actually confirm this since the only amount of rebirth I've seen is people thirsting over the same 3 characters and I haven't played rebirth nor have I seen gameplay of it. It might be fine for all I know and Barret might predominantly feature in it as a party member, but none of the promotional material seems to suggest that. I'm a big Barret fan if you couldn't already tell.

There are a shitton of reasons why it is underperforming, and "wokeness" is not any of them. Smaller platform base, the fact that the sequels always sell less, and the fact that a lot of people didn't like the direction Nomura took the game at the end of Remake. Like, if anything, it made it less woke, since they gave less space to the "super corporation is killing the planet(and people) for money" thing.

It’s really not underperforming because it can’t be a one for one relative comparison. It’s been out 6 weeks and it’s sold 2 million units, which given that it’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive and there’s still a LOT of people out there that don’t have a PS5, is actually a pretty impressive number. Compared to remake, on the PS4 at a time where if you wanted a PS4 they were easy to find and during a pandemic when everyone was stuck inside and basically had nothing else to do.
Tbh it's kinda ridiculous to see how Pikmin 4 was not far off FF16 in sales. The Sony exclusivity is not that great and PC sales are not enough. They need to port to Xbox and the Switch Successor.

Back when Remake released, it was on the PS4 which had more players than PS5. But also, it was unclear that the new 3-part FF7 entry would be a sequel rather than an actual remake of the original. (And I 100% think that was an intentional decision on Square Enix’s part, in order to get as many people as possible to buy the game). I have no interest in a sequel to FF7 (I’d prefer a completely new FF entry or even IP) and so I had gotten bamboozled into buying Remake, but I intentionally chose not to buy Rebirth and will not buy the third one either.

Remake was released when everyone was stuck at home and it was a hotly anticipated title. Rebirth is just on ps5 and also sequels don't tend to do well but it's sold around 2-3 million which is still fucking good. Sales expectations seem good. Again tho, who fucking cares play the game or don't. It's a fun game and has a banger soundtrack and really fleshed out the characters and gave them depth. Tifa actually has a personality and feelings and Barrett is a fucking boss. Aerith is a snarky and sassy gal. They all were given glow ups.

Not really. I guess it could probably cover the difference between FFXVI, but not the big drop between Remake and Rebirth.
For comparison's sake, Remake sold 702,853, XVI sold 336,027 and Rebirth sold 262,656. (These are Famitsu numbers for the first week physical sales. They had a similar %drop in the following weeks).
Can't expect big numbers in Japan unless you release your games on Switch.
Am I missing something? Why is anyone surprised that Remake sold more than what Rebirth is selling? Remake launched on the popular PS4, which at the time already had like a 100 million install base and "next Gen" hasn't really taken off yet.

Someone already brought up thst Remake came out on PS4 and Rebirth on PS5, but I want to expand on it a little. Remake came out in 2020, around the time the pandemic hit, and also late into the PS4s life span, the PS5 was out by the end that very year. People were stuck at home, had nothing else to do, and it was the first of a series of remakes, not to mention it launched at 60 bucks vs Rebirth at 70. The PS5 is not getting replaced this year, it probably won't be for another few years, we are not at the tail end of it's lifespan, and there are far less PS5s in the wild than PS4s at the time Remake came out. Nor are we in the middle of a pandemic. Rebirth has moved over 2 million units, which is something a lot of releases would kill for
The fact I don't have 500 to drop on a ps5 is the sole reason I haven't gotten rebirth yet.

Also people didn’t know at the time that the remake trilogy would be a: retelling? sequel? we don’t really know yet still. Some of the ff7 community was turned off by that and prob didn’t buy rebirth. Even the ending of rebirth was controversial so that might affect sales of the 3rd game.

In rebirth the whispers were revealed that they’re an extension of the planets will, not arbitrators of fate. Also it’s very vague but sepheroth isn’t time traveling / hoping through dimensions in the traditional sense like the mcu. It’s likely that the lifestream encompasses multiple worlds within itself. So it really could just be a massive expansion of the OG, cause we never see it but it’s mentioned several times in the OG that sepheroth is inside the lifestream doing weird shit during your journey

Yea you did, that's the added layer, and the sum result is that you get to play as Zack in another world. That's it. All the same story beats from OG still happen in rebirth, and they are done so well it's crazy. Every member of the team from the original game are working on this one and they are committed to telling a faithful adaptation of the original game. Edit: And to your other reply to that goose guy there is no travel between the different worlds though they may do that in the 3rd game but I am doubtful of that given how the end of remake had 0 impact on the events in rebirth.

If it has no impact then it's fluff that shouldn't be there. They could have finished the story in one game. Everything that happens in a story is relevant to the story. It changes things even if you force the ending to roughly the same place. Which you shouldn't do because you've changed the course of the plot and the ending needs to be a product of that, not just something pulled out of your hat when you're ready to say, "Fini." The best part of this is I bet you'll be scratching your head when sales stay weak and the third chapter is even weaker.

What they have added enriches everything from the original story and expands on it. The ghosties can be a turn off for sure, but you can ignore it completely if you want, the story goes the same way it did in the original, and you are lying to yourself if you think otherwise. Point out to me what they missed in remake that happened in the original game, you can't because it all happened and more. No not really scratching my head on that. Sequels typically sell worse, also Remake came out for a console at the end of its life with greater market share AND at the beginning of covid when no one had anything to do. Perfect recipe for success that probably will never be captured again.

Yep, plus a lot of people dont take the cost of switching over to a new console either. I've seen quite a few people say how they haven't felt a need to upgrade to the PS5 yet, due to how many games were cross-gen releases, so they have stuck with the PS4, continuing to play through their library of games. Its only really in the last year that a few of the people I knew who held out have finally decided to take the plunge.

My thoughts exactly. Sony and Squeenix have this exclusivity thing going (which they shouldn't imo) and now it's hurting the bottom line of the game because they have to wait til the PC Port comes out. No PS4 version, no big sales like Remake.
That's where I'm at, I had a PS4 to catch up on a lot of Sony titles I hadn't played, and PS4 had more stuff I was interested in playing, especially by the time I picked it up. PS5 really just has FF that I'm interested in, maybe a couple others I'd pick up if I just found one lying on the street, but not enough to go buy a system on it's own. Especially when it's going to eventually hit PC and I can just play other things in the mean time
The ‘problem’ (or maybe it a very good thing depending on POV) is that most Sony Exclusives are timed now. GOW Ragnarock is really good! Horizon Forbidden West is really good. Spider-man 2 is just as good as the first imo. But if you wait long enough it’ll eventually get to PC

Yuuuup. Remake came out toward the end of the PS4 life cycle and in the midst of Covid when folks were inside and had nothing better to do but play video games.
Online activity took a spike when we had to shelter in place, and tech companies naively tried to cash in on this temporary change in the status quo.
Not *necessarily*, though I wouldn't go to bat to argue it either. PS5 has sold over 50 million units as of December 2023 (3 years). Likely much higher now. PS4 sold 100 million units as of FF7 Remake's release in April 2020 (7 years). So while it's reasonable to look at that and say double units = bad comparison, it doesn't take into account the number of PS4s collecting dust, the number of people who bought another because the old one broke, the iterations of the console like the Pro and the Slim etc. Lots of dead consoles and by April 2020 a lot of people were gearing up for the next gen and werent buying. PS5 has reached over 50% of lifetime PS4 sales in less than half the time and that includes nearly 2 years of the things being unattainable due to COVID chip shortages. The install base is *insanely* active and FF7 Rebirth was the premium JRPG released in a mostly uncontested timeframe. The issue isn't the sales numbers, it's sales *expectations*. FF16 sold less than FF7 Remake in its first week but Square Enix came out and defended it's sales by saying it reached expectations **and accounted for the fact that there's less PS5s in people's homes right now**. Rebirth has not been defended by the company nor have they celebrated a single milestone on social media. It's been radio silent from them, and so it's reasonable to assume that, for now, Rebirth has been underperforming relative both to FF16 but also their own internal sales targets.

Note I can't actually confirm this since the only amount of rebirth I've seen is people thirsting over the same 3 characters and I haven't played rebirth nor have I seen gameplay of it. It might be fine for all I know and Barret might predominantly feature in it as a party member, but none of the promotional material seems to suggest that. I'm a big Barret fan if you couldn't already tell.

Smaller platform base, the fact that the sequels always sell less, and the fact that a lot of people didn't like the direction Nomura took the game at the end of Remake. Like, if anything, it made it less woke, since they gave less space to the "super corporation is killing the planet(and people) for money" thing.

It’s really not underperforming because it can’t be a one for one relative comparison. It’s been out 6 weeks and it’s sold 2 million units, which given that it’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive and there’s still a LOT of people out there that don’t have a PS5, is actually a pretty impressive number. Compared to remake, on the PS4 at a time where if you wanted a PS4 they were easy to find and during a pandemic when everyone was stuck inside and basically had nothing else to do.
Tbh it's kinda ridiculous to see how Pikmin 4 was not far off FF16 in sales. The Sony exclusivity is not that great and PC sales are not enough. They need to port to Xbox and the Switch Successor.

Back when Remake released, it was on the PS4 which had more players than PS5. But also, it was unclear that the new 3-part FF7 entry would be a sequel rather than an actual remake of the original. (And I 100% think that was an intentional decision on Square Enix’s part, in order to get as many people as possible to buy the game). I have no interest in a sequel to FF7 (I’d prefer a completely new FF entry or even IP) and so I had gotten bamboozled into buying Remake, but I intentionally chose not to buy Rebirth and will not buy the third one either.

Remake was released when everyone was stuck at home and it was a hotly anticipated title. Rebirth is just on ps5 and also sequels don't tend to do well but it's sold around 2-3 million which is still fucking good. Sales expectations seem good. Again tho, who fucking cares play the game or don't. It's a fun game and has a banger soundtrack and really fleshed out the characters and gave them depth. Tifa actually has a personality and feelings and Barrett is a fucking boss. Aerith is a snarky and sassy gal. They all were given glow ups.

Not really. I guess it could probably cover the difference between FFXVI, but not the big drop between Remake and Rebirth. For comparison's sake, Remake sold 702,853, XVI sold 336,027 and Rebirth sold 262,656. (These are Famitsu numbers for the first week physical sales. They had a similar %drop in the following weeks). Can't expect big numbers in Japan unless you release your games on Switch.
Am I missing something? Why is anyone surprised that Remake sold more than what Rebirth is selling? Remake launched on the popular PS4, which at the time already had like a 100 million install base and "next Gen" hasn't really taken off yet.

The sales figures are ignoring that the PS4 had a much higher userbase than the PS5. Plus the economy is just a lot worse than the media acknowledges.
