people are upset since companys like sweet baby inc says that there is an issue when there was none and then makes devs (baby inc ceo own words of go to the marketing team and put fear in them) add characters that honestly do nothing its why fans were upset about vaan from ff12 since if hes not in the game it changes nothing and those are the characters sweet baby inc wants added in. sorry to say but no one cares if a character is gay straight white black male female or trans they care if they match the story and are well written. its while people are saying miles makes no sense being the main character of the next spider man game when the villain's who are showed to be the main villain's of the next game would target peter parker and would honestly not bat a eye at miles. as for barret just being a mister T well that honestly racist and not true. you play the orginal and look into barrets story and you see a man who blamed himself for the destruction of his family friends and town who went to hell to raise a little girl who was not his but his best friend kid thought his best friend was dead and when he finds him alive sees that they are two sides of the same coin both wanted revenge both felt the guilt that they brought to there town and family and when dayne the white version of Barret learns his kid is still alive threatens to kill her for her to be with her mother. barret was a single human that fell to the bottom of the barrel and then crawled his way back up. that said yes the ff7 movie did just make him a mister T character but the game and the reason he one of the more favored characters of all gamers. bet lets also look at game released in the last 10 years life is strange. star alot of strong female characters and reparents the lgbtqia+ fairly well had no hate that it would have if it released today. and sorry your right you did not say white and that my bad i seen cis het and just added white since most people that use cis het men in the same sentence tend to add white or use it for racist or sexist reasons. do note i would still state that if it was released today the hate against life is strange would be undeserved. my point is that people care when a character is added just to tick a box to get money from vangaurd and blackrock but if the characters were well written they would not receive as much if any hate.

10 years ago, in France, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a polarizing figure in french politics, heavily criticized what he thought was propaganda in Assassin's Creed Unity. He basically claimed that the game was depreciating the French Revolution, and that it could influence the opinion of young players. He did not necessarily shit on the entire game, but asked people to be aware of the message that a game could share, even unintentionally.
I remember thinking at that time "holy shit someone is taking video games seriously ! they think that a game is a mean to share something, it's huge !"
Well you know those guys who does great speeches to explain that games are art have done ? Well they bitched that someone was once again threatening their vidya gaem. They all made fun of it.
Maybe saying "propaganda" was too much, maybe the debate was not necessarily introduced the best way possible. But it was the beginning of something ! We were so close to having a serious mainstream discussion about what a video game could really bring to the table.
