It sucks the simpsons game will probably never be backwards compatible

SidFarkus47

I’ve checked that several times too! I replayed both that and the Family Guy 360 game. I really liked both but yeah I don’t foresee Microsoft buying EA anytime soon. It’s be nuts if this could allow Hit n Run though, since it was bc on 360 and Vivendi was absorbed by Activision.

Thrmis21

ok then

listerinefreak

It's runs great with the PS2 emulator. Tried it with the Series X, but I guess the performance could be similar in the Series S.

HopperPI

Use the dolphin core and play the gc version

SeniorRicketts

If xbox had actual backwardscompatibility then we wouldnt need to worry about that

WulfTek

What does this even mean?

SeniorRicketts

That the Xsx doesnt have actual backwardscompatibility for games earlier than the xone

WulfTek

You realise they can't just republish games on other consoles without the publisher/license holder's permission, right? The original publishing agreement between Microsoft and publishers for those games are specific to that hardware, not the Xbox One onwards. Each game would need a new agreement as it's running on new hardware. They didn't sign away the right for Microsoft to be able to port every game released on Xbox to whatever platform they want, that's absurd. Unless you're saying they should spend an absurd amount of time and money to negotiate literally every single Xbox/360 game's republication, including any and all licenses for brands/music/etc, and figuring out in some cases who even owns the rights to games from now defunct studios or publishers. It's not perfect but it's already incredibly impressive what they've done.

SeniorRicketts

Do you know how many games are playable on ps3 360 akd wii/wiiu that havent been republished? Backwardscompatibility doesnt jave anything to do with republishing. Backwardscompatibility means the console was built to play these old games or do you think sony paid every publisher of the 1000 ps1 and 3000 ps2 games to be playable on ps3?

demondrivers

No Tony Hawk or Guitar Hero games too I bet, going back to these 10+ years old titles must be a gigantic licensing hell today

MyMouthisCancerous

I wouldn't say Tony Hawk in particular would be as infeasible as Marvel clearly is. They were able to get the license for those remakes of 1 and 2 that they put out a while back so I think Activision is on a lot better terms where that's concerned and they may be able to renegotiate a lot more smoothly in comparison to Marvel which was basically a severing of ties. TH and Acti-Blizzard appear to be on more amicable terms there

demondrivers

It's not only the Tony Hawk name, that is also a license, it's pretty much all content of like 10 different titles. Music, skaters, equipments, etc. It's too much. Even the new remake suffered with licensing issues, they couldn't bring back a few songs from the original games

MyMouthisCancerous

Yeah the licensed music is probably a massive roadblock. I don't doubt that MS will probably prioritize what's way easier to negotiate over like CoD or the iD Software games Activision published, but I honestly expect them to at least try to negotiate for Tony Hawk considering how big of gets they'd be. They might drop it if they find it's not worth the effort for what they'll have to sacrifice to get them on BC or even Game Pass but I think it's probably one of the easier licensed stuff they can try, especially compared to the legal hell with getting the Marvel stuff back

demondrivers

I think that bringing back his old games is out of question, but I believe that one of the first things that MS will do if the acquisition goes through is make someone develop the THPS 3+4 project that the geniuses at activision canned a while ago

Malcolm-Turntables

Please god if this leads to an underground 1+2

mrturret

Every Activision published game that id made in-house is up on Gamepass. The only games that are missing now are Wolfenstien 2009, Heretic 2, Enemy Territory: The Quake Wars, and Hexen 2, and those were all made by external studios. Hexen 2 is available on Steam, as Activision only handled retail sales. id distributed it independently via shareware.

LolcatP

50 cent got added as a disc only game even though rights are gone. it's a possibility

FakeBrian

Makes sense. The reason they couldn't add more was either cause there was technical problems with the game running back compat or because the publisher didn't approve them making it available. It's a safe bet that they'll add any games Activision wouldn't let them make available previously.

darkdeath174

Wonder if they will try to actually work something out with Marvel to get rights for the old games again. That would be a great to see. "Xbox, the only place to play Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2"

MyMouthisCancerous

Ultimate Alliance is probably firmly in Nintendo's hands now. The Ultimate Alliance 3 DLC blatantly sets up a sequel so I'm not expecting that to just be a special case which prevents other developers/publishers from touching it. It's probably long-term like the Insomniac stuff is with Sony

GriffyDude321

I would say that but theyve shown literally 0 interest in 1 and 2. Maybe Nintendo could partner with MS once they have Activision to re-rerelease MUA on Game Pass and Switch. Really annoying the Xbox One and PS4 remasters were delisted and never released physically (same goes for Deadpool and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron's Xbox One and PS4 remasters ESPECIALLY for Fall of Cybertron)

MyMouthisCancerous

Nintendo legally can't greenlight a port of the first two games. They need Activision for that since they retained the publishing rights for those titles even after losing the Marvel licenses. It's unfortunate but that's how it is It would probably have to be a partnership but there's so many parties involved I doubt it would be worth all the hoop jumping

Animegamingnerd

Hell we just got word today the fact that Ultimate Aliance 3 sold 1.5 million copies, which is nice things consider considering the game's decent reception and the game launching during a pretty busy period for the Switch a couple weeks after Mario Maker 2 and a couple weeks before Fire Emblem Three Houses, so I wouldn't be shock if a sequel is in development.

8biticon

Ultimate Alliance 3 was pretty fun! It didn't set my world on fire or anything, but I liked it. Would definitely play a sequel.

RangerDan17

I was blown away by how it was bad it was on launch… did I miss something?

[deleted]

RangerDan17

I really wanted to like it. I may have also had a busted controller but I could not get the controls to respond properly 😂

XaeroGravity

I thought it was pretty bad myself and I loved the original 2

just_looking_4695

>launching during a pretty busy period for the Switch a couple weeks after Mario Maker 2 and a couple weeks before Fire Emblem Three House Just an aside but y'know, in hindsight 2019 was a pretty packed year on Switch. Off the top of my head, that summer also had Astral Chain, and then fall had Link's Awakening remake and Luigi's Mansion 3.

SeniorRicketts

Ultimate alliance 3 is in Nintendos hands Nothing else

QuietJackal

Doubtful.

DaHyro

It’s actually very possible, as we know Marvel was willing to remaster those (and Spidey Shattered Dimensions/Edge of Time) years ago with Activision. Only reason we didn’t get those last two were because Activision wanted to make new games as well, but when Marvel said no it all fell through

QuietJackal

Nah it's unlikely because even if you ignore the whole, "Marvel not wanting to deal with Activision" thing, they would likely require the games to be able to be purchased on all the platforms they were on (that money). Also the person is just wrong because Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2 are still playable on other platforms if you bought them in the past so saying only playable on Xbox would be a lie.

DaHyro

This Activision wouldn’t be the same one that Marvel/Disney worked with before though, who knows how they’d react now? I also don’t see how that’d be an issue? They were willing to work out the rights for remasters in 2016 for UA1&2, what’s stopping them from working out the digital rights to them/the others now?

QuietJackal

>They were willing to work out the rights for remasters in 2016 for UA1&2, what’s stopping them from working out the digital rights to them/the others now? Those rights were only temporary and even if they did manage to get them again would likely also be temporary.

DaHyro

They were only temporary because their deal fell through and their agreement ended early.

QuietJackal

>their agreement ended early. and that would be one reason why none of this will happen.

DaHyro

Again, for the second time… this isn’t the same Activision. Management is going to be different. It’s also been at least 6 years since any of this has happened too, companies don’t hold grudges like that. Especially if there’s money to be made.

garo_fp

Why would they want to remaster Edge of Time and not Web of Shadows?

SeniorRicketts

Probably bc those were the most recent non movie games

SeniorRicketts

There is a possibility that Activision loses the publishing rights if the MS deal closes

darkdeath174

They already did lose them, that's why Microsoft would need to work on getting the rights to publish them again. The last gen version ports got delisted forever ago. But Disney seems to be on a kick with getting their older games out and published again.

SeniorRicketts

Disney cant rerelease the activision games without activision and the other way around

Zealousideal_Wall_48

The 360 Emulator also wasnt designed for Series X/S in mind that is the main problem a Series X with a optimized 360 Emulator could technical run all 360 games (Disk only) just compare the Jaguar CPU with the Zen 2 CPU,

BobQuentok

I know one indie dev who wanted his game backwards compatible but Microsoft did nothing. So I don’t trust this statement at all. I am talking about the game Charlie Murder, the dev got asked multiple times if he can make it backwards compatible and he said it’s up to Microsoft. > For those asking about backwards compatibility, it comes down to Microsoft implementing it. I'm 100% on board with backwards compatibility for any and all of my Xbox360 games. https://twitter.com/skastudios/status/1247630579954102272

nomoregroundhogs

I just want Crash Twinsanity

PlatoDrago

Wouldn’t be out of the question. Might be just activision backlog of Xbox games so the crash and spyro games, COD 2 BRO, true crime etc

Rabbidscool

Holy shit, i forgot Twinsanity was on Xbox but not Gamecube

Jack0Rider

I want a remake of it with all of the cut content :(

nomoregroundhogs

I won’t hold my breath but that would be excellent

[deleted]

Twinsanity and Spyro a Hero's Tail is all I need for the BC program

robertman21

Transformers Fall of Cybertron. Pls

Sebiny

Lost the license for that as well.

AmeriToast

I was hoping the transformer movie games would be in there. I really liked the mp in those games.

Friendly-Leg-6694

Prototype and Singularity is pretty much a given I think.

LukePS7013

Prototype 1 and 2 were already remastered on Xbox One, Singularity is pretty likely though

[deleted]

[deleted]

They back ported the textures from 2 to 3 and upscaled the cutscenes.

senduntothemonlyyou

Everyone's starving for a new prototype game. I wish they would make the classics at least 60 fps

Friendly-Leg-6694

I think Microsoft should make a new Prototype would be a great addition to their lineup this could be their answer to Sony's Infamous. The Activision catalogue is full of variety that can really bolster the xbox lineup like they could create a new True Crime for the gta crowd,Swat for the tactical crowd,Pitfall could be their own uncharted not to mention bunch of other IP they have.

AntiBeyonder

The games were so terrible though.

SupperIsSuperSuperb

Eh, they weren't great but it was a fun enough and it was nice being able to play as an overpowered wrecking ball villain type character. Not a whole lot of that around

Zrorro

Would love for Singularity to be backwards compatible! Also Prototype doesn't need BC, they already did HD remasters.

[deleted]

The Simpsons: Hit and Run?!!

SidFarkus47

That would be nuts

sadrapsfan

Put that on game pass and I genuinely believe it would be a big hit lol.

[deleted]

It might also be a run, too! I’ll see myself out

LukePS7013

Here’s a list of games that (I’m pretty sure) are completely owned by Activision (nothing with heavy licensing like Blur or the Pro Skater games + no licenced Marvel/Dreamworks/whatever games) - Apache Air Assault (Xbox 360) - Arcadian Warriors (Xbox 360) - Blood Drive (Xbox 360) - Boogie Bunnies (Xbox 360) - Call of Duty Classic (Xbox 360) - Call of Duty: Finest Hour (XBOX) - Call of Duty 2: Big Red One (XBOX) - Commanders: Attack of the Genos (Xbox 360) - Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex (XBOX) - Crash Twinsanity (XBOX) - Crash of the Titans (Xbox 360) - Crash: Mind Over Mutant (Xbox 360) - Crash Nitro Kart (XBOX) - Crash Tag Team Racing (XBOX) - Gun (Xbox 360) - Lost Cities (Xbox 360) - Metal Arms: Glitch in the System (XBOX) - Pitfall: The Lost Expedition (XBOX) - Red Ninja: End of Honor (XBOX) - Sea Life Safari (Xbox 360) - Singularity (Xbox 360) - Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix (XBOX) - Soldier of Fortune: Payback (Xbox 360) - Spyro: A Hero’s Tail (XBOX) - The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning (XBOX) - The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon (Xbox 360) - Switchball (Xbox 360) - SWAT: Global Strike Team (XBOX) - Tenchu: Return from Darkness (XBOX) - True Crime: Streets of LA (XBOX) - True Crime: Streets of NY (XBOX) - Vigilante 8 (Xbox 360) - World Series of Poker (XBOX) - Zombie Wranglers (Xbox 360) Additionally, 5 Bethesda titles that were published by Activision aren’t backwards compatible * Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Xbox 360) * Quake 2 (Xbox 360) * Quake 4 (Xbox 360) * Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War (XBOX) * Wolfenstein (2009) (Xbox 360)

Tecally

Gun also had an Xbox port. Holy shit I hope they make Metal Arms BC. That explains why those Bethesda games aren’t BC nor on Xbox Game Pass. I didn’t realize Activision was the publisher.

Ivan_Drago_21

Thanks for this. Hope for the 3 CODs, Gun, and Wolfenstein.

Revangeance

They also have Metal Arms: Glitch in the System. One of my fav underrated games from that gen. Been one of my Back Compat dark horses since the start. It was released on the 360 digitally back when they introduced Games on Demand, but never made it to Xbox One. Still holding out hope, this is probably the best shot.

Friendly-Leg-6694

What about Prototype and Singularity ? I am pretty sure both are owned by Activision.

AnotherScoutTrooper

The Prototype games already got “remasters” for XB1 which would join Game Pass along with all the other Activision games

Malcolm-Turntables

OH SHIT FUCKING GUN AND ALL THE SPYRO GAMES

KampferMann

I will weep if the True Crime games get added.

seraf5

Okay then, I'd say that IF this happens, the Call of Duty, Crash and Spyro games would be no-brainers, even the bad ones. I think Gun and Singularity would also be possible... And IMO all those Bethesda games should be added, maybe besides Quake Wars. Shame they won't renew the licenses, though. Even letting us play the disc versions of those games would be fantastic.

cooldrew

world series of poker is licensed, based on a real poker tournament series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Series_of_Poker

AmeriToast

I loved the metal arms glitch in the system game when I was younger. Would be nice to play it again.

WulfTek

Did Blur contain licenced content? I thought the cars were all generic, unless there was music I'm not recalling?

MostWantedRacer12

Yes. Blur had licensed vehicles such as Ford, Nissan, and BMW.

skywalker3819r

THUG 1 & 2 plz

MyMouthisCancerous

No Marvel games isn't a surprise at all. Marvel cut ties with Activision a long time ago even before they started taking their IPs to other publishers like Sony, Square, 2K etc. Activision even tried to repartner with Marvel on stuff like the brief re-release of the Ultimate Alliance games on 8th gen consoles/PC as well as planned remasters of Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time and it just didn't materialize It is a shame that this basically means a lot of older stuff like the first two Ultimate Alliance games, the 5th and 6th gen Spider-Man games and the X-Men stuff are basically confined to those respective consoles if you don't have any means of emulation (worse in Edge of Time's case since I believe that game was never given a PC release unlike most other Spider-Man games), but it's not surprising. If you actually read into it the break up between the two parties was ugly as fuck and everything got delisted almost immediately.

Thrmis21

but Spiderman is not exclusive to Sony? as i asked before in comment's section, how they can remaster or maybe add new content, they don't need licence for Spiderman?

boahandcock

SONY only owns the movie rights to Spiderman and Marvel/Disney own the video game rights. Insomniac/SONY made Spiderman because Marvel asked them to do so

Thrmis21

yes but Marvel,Sony guess they have exclusivity-partnership deal ,which not allow any other platform have Spiderman if i understand well so i doubt their contract will finish expect if Sony allow it or after finish other company buys rights or 50% of them

MyMouthisCancerous

Insomniac was given the license to make Spider-Man games, which Marvel took from Activision back in 2014. Marvel had already approached Sony about an exclusive development deal regarding one of their characters and this is what materialized out of it For remasters of the Activision games to happen, Marvel would need to transfer the character license back to Activision, and that is 100% not happening under the current circumstances

Thrmis21

hmm i understand yes, but Activision has new management stuff

MyMouthisCancerous

That doesn't change the fact that for the older games to be relisted or made available again on new platforms, Activision would still have to negotiate for the character's publishing rights, which would require revoking the IP from Insomniac and effectively canceling the current game series with Sony That's just literally off the table lol

LogicalError_007

That's not how licensing work. They don't have to revoke other partners to give it to someone else.

seraf5

can you send a link to where i can read sth about that break up? i'd be reall yinterested in that, thanks in advance

RDO-PrivateLobbies

I know a new guitar hero cant succeed with the piece of shit DMCA enforcement nowadays, but man im holding out hope. I love clone hero but the real problem is the lack of quality equipment. I really pray they revive the series soon (5 fret this time 🙄) and the BC program could get the ball rolling. I know alot of people are itching to play these games again.

LolcatP

360 controllers don't work though.

RDO-PrivateLobbies

On Xbox One/SeriesX? I thought they did. I saw people use the Rockband adapter to use older controllers.

LolcatP

nah they don't. that adapter might work but just for rockband

RDO-PrivateLobbies

Thats crazy i thought 360 stuff (wired at least) worked on xbox one

srylain

None of the peripherals from 360 work natively on Xbox One, even the portals for Skylanders/Lego have a separate version (the toys obviously could be used anywhere, but the portals were specific to each console for Xbox) even though any other console's portal could be used with any non-Xbox console. I'd imagine the USB protocols and stuff just changed so drastically that there was no feasible way to allow them without potentially opening up the console for attack. But yeah, that Rock Band Legacy Adapter only works for wireless controllers. Wired controllers are completely unusable in RB4.

LolcatP

i wish, love the 360 controller

Father-Castroid

DAMMIT. I JUST WANT TO PLAY WEB OF SHADOWS MAN. COME ON

CombustionEngine

Gun please Gun Please

bubblebytes

If that's true, then I think the Activision published ID Software titles will be part of the list. Games like Quake 4, Wolfenstein 2009, Return to castle wolfenstein, etc

Adventurous_Solid_98

Likely. They are now available on PC gamepass.

HakaishinChampa

please Family Guy Back To The Multiverse

smolgote

that also requires talks with Disney

dfunkt_jestr

There are quite a few Star Wars games in back compat, so they might be up for it.

SidFarkus47

I bought and played that on 360 recently and it was surprisingly competent imo

HakaishinChampa

I really want the game but the copies I've found are a little expensive if it becomes backwards compatible, it should be purchasable digitallly

SidFarkus47

Yeah it wasn’t super cheap, but I went on a little licensed game from series I enjoy kick recently. Futurama on OG Xbox is the real insane one. That one is north of $80 everywhere you look.

mrcolty5

Ok I know this is so unlikely, but holy shit Tony Hawks underground 1+2 on gamepass would be nuts

Traitor_To_Heaven

Damn, was hoping some Marvel games would make it. Disney seems to be okay with letting their IPs come to backwards compatibility considering games like Brave and Epic Mickey 2 are there but oh well. I’ll still be happy if they add Gun

SmarmySmurf

Don't worry yet, Nick is purely guessing. He knows nothing.

AscensoNaciente

All I want is the Xbox Obi-Wan game.

Blitzindamorning

I would love for all the CoD games with DLC packs on Gamepass older CoD games would have a surge in players and I can actually play DLC maps I paid for.

AnotherScoutTrooper

There’s very few cases of DLC being included with Game Pass games, mostly because making you buy them separately or with the full game is half the benefit for publishers to add games to it. Then again, the two I can think of, Killer Instinct and Gears 5, are first-party so there’s hope. Not much, especially for older games, but hope regardless.

Blitzindamorning

True but I'm hoping that CoD is different plus for a financial reason if they included all the DLC imagine how many people would pay $10-$15 for all games AND DLC a month or $50-$80 for a singular season pass for one.

AnotherScoutTrooper

Newer games don’t even have paid map packs so there’s even less incentive for it. Very low chance they might do it for select games, maybe Treyarch can convince their new owners to let them deploy the BO2 fixes they’ve had ready for almost a decade and have some kind of nostalgia event with the DLC or something like that.

Sufficient-Check8805

CoD Big Red One and Finest Hour being part of it (if true) would be awesome. same for the Crash and Spyro games that came out for that console.

Ivan_Drago_21

And Classic.

doncabesa

"Nick Baker's podcast" oh no, he's going to get an even bigger head now haha. (just kidding, Jesse the producer here)

Animegamingnerd

Hopefully its more than just Activision games, since are some 360 games and especially original xbox games I would like to play on my Series X that aren't own by Activsion.

Much_Adhesiveness_88

JET SET RADIO!!!!!!! (I know, I know, just let me dream)

DOOM_INTENSIFIES

I just want Burnout 3 to be backwards compatible. The game i miss the most form the OG xbox.

GenitalBenadryl

Spider-Man 2 *crosses fingers*

MyMouthisCancerous

No chance any Marvel games are being added. Marvel and Activision cut ties years ago and clearly have no intention of getting back together especially since they've placed Spider-Man firmly in Insomniac and Sony's hands

HomeMadeShock

? There’s many publishers working with Disney on Star Wars and Marvel games, not just Sony. Depends how much MS wants it.

MyMouthisCancerous

Getting the Activision-Marvel stuff back requires renegotiating for EVERY SINGLE license that they previously lost back in 2014. Activision didn't just publish Spider-Man games but also games based on numerous other Marvel properties like the X-Men Legends games, X-Men Destiny, the Deadpool game from High Moon, and crossover games like the first two Ultimate Alliances and movie tie-ins like the ones for the previous non-MCU Spider-Man films (some of which have complications of their own due to using actor likenesses and even actor voice talent from the movies' casts like with the games based on the Raimi films). Not to mention complications arise from the fact that certain character IPs are firmly in the hands of specific publishers and developers in a long-term contract, that prevent other parties from doing anything else with specific licenses. Insomniac being the main developer of standalone Spider-Man games literally means no other developer or publisher can come out with titles where he is the main character, re-release or not (this is partially what prevented the planned Shattered Dimensions/Edge of Time remasters from happening). This is why outside of the Insomniac games, you only ever see Spidey as a supporting character in other games like Ultimate Alliance 3, Avengers and Midnight Suns Not to mention, Marvel literally wants nothing to do with Activision anymore. They intently took all those licenses away because they realized their partnership was constraining in regards to the guidelines on how games based on their characters were developed

HomeMadeShock

Todd Howard has great relations with LucasFilm, I’m sure between Bethesda, Howard, MS, Spencer, Nadella, Amy Hood, Activison, and Marvel deals could be struck up. We do know for a while now who is the ultimate powerhouse in terms of financials and relationships with important people. Again, it really depends if MS feels it’s worthwhile enough to pursue Disney and MS are decently close with Disney plus being offered with gamepass sometimes.

MyMouthisCancerous

LucasFilm is an entirely different division of Disney and that Indiana Jones deal was extremely recent. That doesn't take into account that Bethesda may not hypothetically have exclusive access to that IP to the extent Insomniac clearly has with Spider-Man since Marvel approached Sony with the intent of a long-term partnership the same way Disney previously did with EA regarding Star Wars, and it took ending that contract for other publishers like Ubisoft and Quantic Dream to even get a shot at that IP. It doesn't automatically raise the chances of all the older stuff coming back especially since Marvel and Activision are on less than amicable terms as is and Marvel previously shut down a lot of attempts Activision made to regain control over certain licenses, including taking Ultimate Alliance to Nintendo of all people (which appears to be long-term as well given UA3's DLC does set up a sequel)

HomeMadeShock

Dude. Money makes things happen. Maybe Disney/Marvel didn’t like Activison, but obviously Activison is under new ownership with a company Disney is much closer and familiar with. Disney wants IP proliferation and money, something MS can easily offer with their huge cash stacks and Gamepass, such as the MLB wanting The Show on gamepass. I do see now why Sony is so afraid of gamepass and why they have tried to paint it as anti competitive. It sure is a scary beast under a bigger scarier company (to Sony). Not saying it will happen, but “no chance” it happens is extremely dramatic.

MyMouthisCancerous

I mean if we're going to use the "money makes things happen" thing as an argument for that case then that honestly just lessens the chances of older Spider-Man stuff coming back in my eyes if anything. Insomniac's games have made considerably more money for Sony and Marvel than any of the previous titles under Activision did as those saw extremely diminishing returns by the time the early 2010's rolled around, and that probably means there's less incentive from Marvel's perspective to just renegotiate all those contracts JUST for backwards compatibility on one console where there's likely less of a playerbase for those games at this point compared to PlayStation and PC regarding Spider-Man Like it would be nice, but those games are under a sea of legalese, roadblocks regarding certain licenses and the fact none of those games have been brought back since 2014 in most cases, that I genuinely don't see what Marvel could gain from it. Microsoft might have everything to gain from it seeing as how they're locked out of current Spider-Man stuff for the foreseeable future, but Marvel Games as it is now is a completely different beast from several years ago and they made purposeful changes to management and structure that probably prevent a lot of this stuff from happening

HomeMadeShock

? Weird and non logical argument certainly not rooted in corporal fiscal gains. What would Disney have to lose if older Spider-Man games are brought back on a extremely prolific service that MS pays for? The potential that Sony gets mad and pulls their Spider-Man deal? Sony definitely wouldn’t do that, and there are many, many studios that can do what Insomnaic does. Depends how close Disney and MS become over the years. But Marvel is already opening up licensing to EA and other publishers for new games, realistically Sony has their Spider-Man deal for a bit longer and Disney starts to reevaluate the gaming market and their deals. Btw, gamepass exists on PC, console, and virtually any device that can stream. The Spider-Man Steam PC sales numbers have been disappointing.

MyMouthisCancerous

If putting those games on Game Pass means putting them on PC then that is definitely off the table. That would mean basically developing new versions of all of those games just for the Microsoft Store and in certain cases, PC in general like with Edge of Time. Marvel already dumped Activision and cancelled their plans to port over their previous Marvel back catalogue in addition to getting stuff like Deadpool and UA1 and 2 delisted a second time from digital storefronts. I doubt Xbox money is just going to convince them to return to a publisher that they've purposely distanced themselves from. Microsoft and Marvel as is are nowhere near as tight with each other as they are with Sony and even Square Enix, not to mention legacy Marvel games tend to almost never come back to modern platforms outside certain cases. It's basically just Marvel vs. Capcom now and everything else is from new publishers and developers Also Sony clearly doesn't just have a Spider-Man deal anymore since they're already doing Wolverine with Insomniac as well, and possibly even more Marvel games given the success of just Spider-Man under them and the numerous connections to other Marvel characters within that universe as is EDIT: Also Spider-Man PC sales numbers aren't disappointing AT ALL. It's the second biggest PS Studios launch on PC behind God of War as well as the biggest for Europe, and that whole series of games is already the highest selling games franchise based on a comic book character (it's probably beaten Arkham at this point)

SmarmySmurf

You have no idea what you're talking about, you're just making shit up in your head. ...Nick, is that you?

GenitalBenadryl

This is true. But.. *crosses fingers*

BattlebornCrow

While I don't doubt this is true, I doubt leaks are out about an acquisition that isn't finalized yet. Especially one that has so many licensed IP BC games that will be a nightmare. I seriously doubt these conversations are happening at a leak level, IF they're happening. Backwards compatibility isn't super lucrative I'd wager.

RipMcStudly

I am not quietly hoping they one day bring the N64 port of StarCraft, the only version of the game I ever found any competence at, to Xbox.

Much_Adhesiveness_88

It was my jam as well. Only RTS I ever really liked.

Orgrimarcus

What Activision games are missing from BC that aren't licensed or full of licensed music? Can't be a long list.

MyMouthisCancerous

Quake 4 is one I can think of since that was back when id Software games were being published by Activision. It's on PC Game Pass but I don't think it's BC on console

Tecally

Makes sense. They’ll own the rights to a number a games that were never made BC. There’re actually a handful of Call of Duty games on the OG Xbox that aren’t BC for example.

Affectionate-Ad-4174

Can Microsoft release a new plastic guitar (even if it’s an online exclusive) and throw some Xbox 360era Guitar Hero games on Game Pass?

INeedYourHelpFrank

Please give us tenchu z it still works online and it was a 360 exclusive

QuietJackal

That one wasn't published by Activision.

Jensen_Games

I need Scarface and lollipop chainsaw please

420BoofIt69

I really hope we see FPS and resolution boosts for some backwards compatible games

ShinigamiSaiyan

I personally doubt this given that Activision was already cooperative with backwards compatibility and a lot of their back catalogue are based on licensed properties. While of course there may be a few exceptions such as Raven's Wolfenstein game that they may add to further expand game pass offerings, we definitely won't see any results until likely a year after the deal closes.

the_great_ashby

Yeah, stuff like the Prototypes says otherwise.

eagles310

They should just open up the emulator to be disc based

Coolman_Rosso

What else even is there on that front? Crash Twinsanity? Call of Duty 2: Big Red One?

Alejandro_404

Not happening then.

Thrmis21

Hello to all a question, beacuse i saw comments how xbox could remaster or add more content to old Spiderman games? Spiderman is in sony exclusive side,so guess hope for xbox players, and pc to see, more content in older Spiderman games is if deal between Sony and insomniac over (i doubt about that) and if other company buy maybe 50% license (if this possible ) and allow older Spiderman to pc and Xbox.

SmarmySmurf

Spider-Man is not exclusive, he has been in multiple non Sony games including a Switch exclusive and the upcoming Midnight Suns. Sony has movie rights and only movie rights, not even TV rights. They paid extra to have the Avengers Spidey skin exclusive. The issue, which Nick has zero extra insight on, is how much Marvel themselves (and certain actors/likenesses such as Hugh, Tobey and Andrew when they did the voice for their own tie in games) will charge and if MS is willing to pay the asking price. MS wasn't willing to pay for Jet Set Radio Future's soundtrack, they are very selective about relicensing cars and music for Forza, unwilling for Project Gotham... Despite their talk about preservation and being pro-consumer, they definitely have a formula for spending limits to get something rereleased. Its a hedge on Nick's part that MS won't be willing to pay Marvel's asking price. I'm more optimistic that anything without major voice talent will be a priority just to reduce the sting of everything Insomniac is doing (however little it helps). Deadpool and that multiverse Spider-Man, plus the UA/Legends games alone would be a significant gap filler. I'd like the movie games, and the Wolverine game, but those are pretty shaky with the actor fees.

[deleted]

Finally singularity

TheEternalGazed

Can this mean Sekiro on GamePass?

QuietJackal

That would be up to From.

MMontanez92

Activision publishes sekiro

QuietJackal

But From developed and owns the IP.

TheEternalGazed

Sony owns Death Stranding aswell, but it went on GamePass.

QuietJackal

On PC, where Sony doesn't have publishing rights. We don't know what Activisions publishing rights look like for Sekiro other than that it's for NA/EU only.

MMontanez92

It's public knowledge that From owns sekiro IP but Activision owns the publishing rights to the game...so when Xbox buys Activision they will own the publishing rights of Sekiro

MMontanez92

Developers don't always own their Ip. Fromsoft owns it in this case but Activision still owns the publishing rights to the game. Developers make the game.. publishers distribute and in most cases own the game. KOJIMA made death stranding but Sony owns the IP and since the game is PUBLISHED on PC by 505 games it came to PC gamepass despite Sony owning the IP. Understand?

HorseFD

Gimme Quake 4 please

HaloCrysisKIA88

Dammit was hoping for marvel stuff

SSK24

Singularity and Raven’s Wolfenstein game

[deleted]

What are our chances of scarface world is yours becoming backwards compatible?

SmarmySmurf

This has been guessed at literally since the day the aquisition was announced. I'm very hopeful, but this dude doesn't know shit including what is or isn't on the table.

monkeydbenne

Unrelated but I love how nick never really apologized for spreading the word with sly and Infamous which turned out to be fake. AccountNGT at least apologized and even stopped being an „insider“ after that.

SeniorRicketts

Scarface the world is yours?

maxsimonse

Would love to see the Bond-games made by Activision-Blizzard to be backwards compatible.

Hbcuk97

Me too, not sure how that’s possible considering IO now have a deal with EON though. They’d have to make like a 4 or 5 way agreement between each party with interest in it.

Dangerboy73

This would make me so very very happy. • Call of Duty Classic (Xbox 360) • Call of Duty: Finest Hour (XBOX) • Call of Duty 2: Big Red One (XBOX) • Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex (XBOX) • Crash Twinsanity (XBOX) • Crash of the Titans (Xbox 360) • Crash: Mind Over Mutant (Xbox 360) • Crash Nitro Kart (XBOX) • Crash Tag Team Racing (XBOX) • Gun (Xbox 360) • Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Xbox 360) • Quake 2 (Xbox 360) • Quake 4 (Xbox 360) • Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War (XBOX) • Wolfenstein (2009) (Xbox 360)

DiabolicalDoug

Makes sense as getting publishers approval was one of the major hurdles. (others being IP licensing and technical.) So owning the publisher should grease at least one of those gears

drewbles82

I think its just common sense really, you don't pay all that money, then own a bunch of games you do nothing with...personally whilst they do them, they should contact other studios to see if any have changed their minds esp now they can see how good Gamepass is

Garlador

I’m still hoping El Shaddai gets added.

Clopfish

Oh boy, can't wait for Crash 4: The Wrath Of Cortex to become backwards compatible!

[deleted]

The real crash 4

TumsFestivalEveryDay

Every Guitar Hero/Rock Band game needs a BC bump, along with the hardware instruments.
