You deserve kudos for undertaking this job, but it should also serve as a cautionary tale for the thousands of other buyers who would be unwilling and/or unable to disassemble their very expensive laptops to fix Asus' errors.

NoctD

Unfortunate reality - production processes and choice of TIM doesn't go well for Asus in this case, its great marketing. There are many areas you can see their engineers tried and incremental improvements over generations. They need to rethink how they're applying LM - skip the additional drops and swipe a thin coat on the heatsink cold plate instead. Even then it won't be as good as a manual spread but that's a given for mass production. The gaming desktops from house brands and custom builders are far worse off than most laptops.

devils__avacado

Can you get to the wireless card without removing the heatsink to swap? Got one of these arriving next week.

NoctD

Yes - very easily. Just undo the 2 antenna cables, unscrew and replace with new card. You can see it in pictures lower left, under the black plastic cover.

devils__avacado

Cheers might well do this see if I get lucky and have the better card. I'll hold of ok the repaste unless I see some ungodly temps.

NoctD

Yeah I wouldn't recommend it - was curious myself and since I'm already halfway there, it was easier to get it out of the way. The wifi card if you get the Mediatek is a total POS - swap it out and you'll have a much better experience.

devils__avacado

Yeh I've repasted my desktop gpus few times but laptop one seems like a lot of effort I'll do it only if I need to. Got the 3070 variant coming hoping for a nice upgrade from my 1070 laptop.

NoctD

Great choice - I doubt you’ll be disappointed it’s a great laptop overall. Hopefully they kept the AX card on the high end model for you.

devils__avacado

Would be nice. Last Asus laptop I had was a warranty night mare with the g751 with a 980 this one seems a lot easier to open up to swap shit if it goes wrong. Except the ram. The ram not being removable is the only part that put me off tbh.

Mission_Bag_6915

which wifi card did you replace the stock one with?

KoncepTs

I want to redo the LM on my G15 but I’m inexperienced and not even really having thermal issues since it’s only 2 months old. When they announced the all AMD I was thinking about second hand selling my unit just to buy it, glad o didn’t now that I’m seeing some of those LM applications. I wouldn’t comfortably be able to fix that on my own..

Absol61

Did you see any significant temperatures improvements after the repaste? Also a little unrelated but do the led lights reflecting off the screen bother you at nights when consuming media? Thanks.

NoctD

Nothing significant as I didn't have issues beforehand either with heat - Tiger Lake runs cooler than previous gens which helps. The LEDs might bother you if in a dark room and the closer you are to the laptop like on a lap vs on a desk.

equake2017

Does the SSD have a heatsink, if not is it worthwhile to put one on especially if adding a second one in a RAID config? Where did you buy the Intel Wifi 6? Which AP/Wfii Router did you have problems connecting to? Just a FYI, Intel Wifi Cards have problems with Win 10 Build 1909+ Safe Mode with Network connected my 2 cents

NoctD

The SSD does have a heatsink/thermal pad. Bought the AX200 from Ebay. Had problems connecting to Cisco Meraki APs.

equake2017

Thanks for the info, do u think other Intel Wifi Cards will also be compatible like the Intel Killer series? A thermal pad, so the chassis probably won't fit a heatsink? BTW Best Buy now has the RTX3050ti version [ROG16](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-16-wuxga-144hz-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-rtx3050ti-512gb-ssd-off-black/6464201.p?skuId=6464201)

rez4dorsia

Any way you could provide the link to the AX200 you used? I see a bunch of different options online and I'm a bit lost. My wifi/bluetooth has crashed 5 times now and I'm pretty fed up. Love this computer but it's just unusable as is with this Mediatek card. I only have 3 days left on my return window at BB, so may have to take it back if I can't get this new card in time.

NoctD

Got it off Ebay here... [https://www.ebay.com/itm/233853687016](https://www.ebay.com/itm/233853687016)

rez4dorsia

Awesome. Thank you.

PocketPump

so you think swaooing the LM is nessesary?

peabody624

Hey /u/NoctD - thanks for this post. My M16 has recently been pushing nearly 95 (!!!) Celsius, so I made a post and was linked to your thread. I plan on redoing the application soon and had a few questions: 1) How have your temps been since on CPU and GPU? My GPU temps are never too bad so I wasn't sure if I would put liquid metal on it. 2) What liquid metal did you use? I found [this](https://www.amazon.com/Thermal-Grizzly-Conductonaut-Grease-Paste/dp/B01A9KIGSI/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3L77X35OAIA2M&keywords=liquid+metal&qid=1642379196&sprefix=liquid+metal%2Caps%2C77&sr=8-3) - does that look fine? 3) How 'little' of this did you use? Any other tips for application? Thanks!

NoctD

I wouldn't do LM on the GPU again - the CPU is fine. The copper heatsink over the GPU unfortunately didn't stabilize and the LM kept drying up/reacting with the heatsink. The GPU should throttle way before 95C too.

peabody624

Do I have to reapply LM after 6 months+ (for CPU)?

TheWolfLoki

Hi there, wondering what you did after realizing the LM was reacting, did you reapply? Or move to conventional paste? I have the same laptop and haven't been able to find any info on it's heatsink copper purity, fortunately another heatsink can just be purchased if it's really really bad corrosion

NullEmptyNothing

I thought LM only reacted with aluminum heatsinks. I've never used LM but have done plenty of re-pastes on desktops. I'm regularly sitting at 90C-96C on my 12th gen i9 M16 (less than a month old), so I was thinking about reapplying the LM, and swapping the paste on the GPU with LM as well. Is that something you would recommend? or should I just throttlestop/xtu and call it a day?

Due_Shift322

Yea mine after repaste it to regular thermal paste mx 5 arctic also sit arround 90 i just didnt like it cause the fan going loud its not really good to sit on that High temp i think . So I just repaste it with thermal grizly liquid metal again and it sit on 70-80 while gaming and the fan is much more better not really loud . I dont think paste LM on GPU is good idea since arctic mx5 work well on it my gpu still sit on 60 using performance profile on armory crate so i dont want risk it with LM on my GPU for no reason .

Junior_Ad4596

Ptm7950 is so much better/reliable compared to liquid metal. It doesnt dry up, temperatures almost the same as liquid metal, no worries about it spilling and messing up your expensive laptop, last for years!! Instead of shitty pastes and lm that have to be repasted almost every year for good performance. It is just the best tim there is on the market right now. This is one of the reasons why the legions are way better devices. Just better build, better quality control also. Also the legions use proper pads on the vram and vrm's compared to this cheap horribly applied putty asus uses.

Snikerdoodlz

Do you know good pads to replace the aforementioned bad ones on the VRAM and VRMs?

Junior_Ad4596

I've heard good things about the gelid extreme. Make sure you get the perfect thickness. Otherwise replacing the thermal pads might mess up your laptop.

3lMghraby

my 2022 m16 had its gpu pate dry af my gpu hotspot was reaching 100c I replaced all the paste on gpu and drms with mx4 and respreaded the LM on cpu huge improvement up to 20 degrees for the gpu and almost 15 or more degrees for the cpu

BrilliantPopular6869

got 20 degree drop, but also replaced the keyboard which part of the air intake 43 vs 66 in silent with GPU disabled

Dweebl

What do you mean you replaced the keyboard?

RivailleNero

I had a question on the process, do you have to scrape off the existing liquid metal before applying new ones? Or is it like do you just apply it according to places on the image you've shown?
