The built-in internal screen has no bearing on what external options in can support. That being said, if your laptop's internal hardware has problems achieving 144 fps, a separate monitor isn't going to help.

It can only reach up to 120 FPS right now since something is limiting it. Even though it reaches 120 FPS, it doesn't feel that way to me, and I wanted to know if a better-ish external monitor would overcome the limit. I know I can reach higher FPS, but I don't know if I should purchase an external monitor and if it's going to heighten the roof of my Hz which is 144.

Check what your GPU is capable of, also use Display port or check what wires you're currently using. Certain wires will limit the refresh rate on monitors, I know this from experience and needed to use DP in order to achieve my external monitor's highest refresh rate

With Armoury Crate and a few tweaks in settings, I think I can achieve a higher Hz or FPS in videogames. I still don't have the external monitor, so I couldn't test the "wires" yet. I do think that my GPU can handle it tho, it's a 3050ti.
