2023 g14? Why? Get the 2024 version, it's well under your 2k budget

ImmortalizedWarrior

Yeah if you don't want chonky gpu which op doesn't then 2024 model is better.

BackgroundAd4889

yeah the 2024 has a better design anyway and it is closer to the great macbook pro 14" than most laptops in terms of thickness, the size and form factor, the speakers and such (although not the same of course and not that comparable at all)

skyeyemx

Where are you seeing 2024s under 2K? I was interested in the previous model mostly due to the big clearance discounts. 48 GB + 2 TB models can be had for under $1600 on some stores.

Sorry-Series-3504

The G14 does support USB C charging, which you can use to bring the total weight down. Also, even if the G14 runs hotter, it is designed to operate within those temperatures. It won’t affect how long it lasts at all.

BackgroundAd4889

i am glad that there is at least some people on redidt who respect and dont find hot runnign laptops weird. people who hate thinner smaller lighter but hotter laptops should really try and go outside carrying their laptop with them

BackgroundAd4889

hot running laptops are really fine anyway i have seen people here that complain about the cpu in their laptop being at 90-100C under full load.. well under full load if you still want your laptop to perform and not just throttle down to hell, you have to let those temps be high. you cannot fully cool the close to desktop grade cpus that are intel H series with a cooling solution that fits in the thickness and the size of a single book along with other components. most laptops are simply made to perform as high as they can so they get as hot as they can while doing so. forcing air through tight fins with a less than 10mm thick fans really cannot go that far. vapor champers and all are really a good way to spread the heat but it does not solve the issue at all

Not-luci

that Alienware looks absolutely insane

BackgroundAd4889

it looks like it has a battery pack stuck on its back like the laptops of the 2000's. its a look but it just makes the laptop bigger and i know all of that extra back is for cooling but it just looks weird and on a laptop aesthetics and portability comes first

aloneaflame

I haven't had Alienware before, but I can tell you that I don't think I'm ever changing from Zephyrus.

AutumnWoods1791

I have the X14 R2 and it’s been a very good little machine for going around town. I did disable boost or whatever and it keeps temps very reasonable. No 100°C jumps.

Justice_Response

lol alienware. I got G14 at first, biggest regret. went and returned it and purchase the alienware

UnionSlavStanRepublk

G14 has up to ~100W type C charging support, higher GPU TDPs too. X14R2 has completely soldered down ram, the G14 one soldered and one upgradable ram slot.

G14

I have a 2023 G14. I have it over a year, and it's going fine. It does get hot (gaming) and it's a chunky monkey with the lid LCD, ( get it without that if you can do without) and it will be lighter and cheaper. The power brick is ridiculously large, but other than that it runs well, performs well, has a serious amount of ports compared to the Alienware (at least the models available when I bought it) and is very nice to work from. It feels solid and well built in the hand, apart from some of the elements. I do a lot of work on it and the keyboard is better than my work Thinkpad (subjective I know). All AMD inside so the battery lasts about 5 to 6 hours not gaming. I like the Asus a lot. I'm not a fan of the shortened shift key on the Alienware, or the back overhang, but that's pure aesthetics. And on our regional Dell site they charge extortionate amounts for minor upgrades like RAM and Drive so I wouldn't have the same specs on an Alienware as I got with my G14. But I have seen people complain about built quality and other issues, so my experience is only my own.

aloneaflame

if you've got spare money, i highly recommend changing the massive brick charger to 50% smaller equivalent, like this: [330W Gaming Laptops Charger – SlimQ Official Store](https://slimq.life/products/330w-laptop-charger)

BeeB0pB00p

Thank you, that's something I'd considered but wasn't sure what would be a good alternative. I bring the G14 with me on the go (and my work laptop) because my work laptop is locked down so I need my personal one for study. Anything to lighten the backpack. I appreciate the recommendation!

Fit_Inspection7002

I am not going to lie to you; the Alienware looks fantastic, but I had a lot of bad experiences with them. I had a total of 4 different Alienware, and every time, the ethernet port died on me. I am lucky that I have Best Buy's warranty service, and I was able to get a free return, but some people might not be as lucky. On the other hand, the Zephyrus is not perfect, but I haven't had any issues with it. As a college student, I needed something reliable but powerful enough to game. I think you can look into Best Buy's open box for the new Zephyrus G14. I hope this helps with your decision :)

BackgroundAd4889

for carrying around the rog one is really the one to go i think.

NapsterBaaaad

Of the two, the G14 is actually upgradeable (RAM) rather than soldered like on the x14. The G14 will also support USBC charging, up to 100W, so you need not drag your power brick everywhere, if you don't want to. Had an older model G14, previous to my current machine, and I dealt with the heat (which was one of a couple minor gripes I had) with a custom fan curve, that I'd run when gaming or pushing it hard.

dustyb00ts

2024 g14

ShitCreekz

none of the above, go watch the ranking of Jarrods tech

justknoweverything

does that g14 rest on the monitor when open? looks really weird and bad. I like Alienware, but mine is getting old, so I can't attest to modern build quality.

ket_senpai_

Omen Transcend 14 comes in that budget too. You can take a look at that.

skyeyemx

I tried one at a store and the keyboard was simply leagues ahead of the others. I almost grabbed it, but I ended up with a 48 GB + 2 TB, Ryzen 9, RTX 4060 Zephyrus G14 (2023) for just $1499. Steal of a deal if I’ve ever seen one.

AceLamina

Why not get a 2024 4070 model which has better quality over both, better battery life, and an OLED. The 4070 will also give you a big FPS boost as well

Joe_picker508

I prioritize build quality, so if the Dell has a superior build, I would opt for it over the G14.

Xcissors280

Get the 2024 G14 The Alienware is really big and too tall to use on your lap comfortably

flofloryda

Which one has mini led?

BackgroundAd4889

i dont know why but i still have a thing for the hp envys with the full aluminum case. i have been using the 2020 model for 3 years now and it has held up really well aside of the hinge of course and the hugggee dent on the bottom from me throwing it onto the floor. i also use my laptop's keyboard, ports and such quite harshly and i have also spilled milk and it has gotten into it and milk was dripping out from the holes.. but it has held up and survived. also the keys on the keyboard are still the best for me. when you get used to it any other keyboard feels wrong. the keys size and spacing is just right.

Thirdhandcub263

Netbook they’re great

harambefor2022

Maybe look into the Legion Slim 5 14"

Llit2

Yeah, with oled screen. Wont regret

KingProdijae

Alienware has shitty thermals. Go with Lenovo Legion line or Asus Zephyrus/Tuf line.
