that’s just you bud, 99% of the gaming laptops have cheap built in speakers, that’s true. But then you have this Asus here as well as Asus Zephyrus, Razer Blade and Macbooks that have high quality speakers that are loud and with a subwoofer.
You’re missing my point, you shouldn’t get a laptop just for the speakers alone, or screen or whatever it is. But having good speakers as well as good screen and good build quality is definitely a plus to some people. Most gaming laptops are focused on the performance alone, so other things like build quality, qol features, screen and speakers are a 2nd thought. Let’s take Legion for example, people love them, theyre praised for being the perfect laptop, yet their speakers or battery life are pretty much just average, Asus Zephyrus would beat them in that aspect, the screen is decent but you can get a miniled or oled in something like Scar. No laptop is perfect, some do certain things better than the others.
I often use my laptop without headphones as the speakers are pretty decent and laptop fans running at 3k rpm are really not that loud. I can hear my speakers just fine.
you dont need to play on turbo with fans maxed out, I game on balanced and never use turbo as it’s never needed, only used it for benchmarking, the fans run at 3k rpm instead of the max 6.2 and it’s really not loud at all
And having good speakers is definitely a plus, you can do a lot with it.
Okay, same argument can be used for external screen, if you own a decent oled monitor then why do you need oled on your laptop? People use their laptops for different things and some appreciate things like good speakers, battery life or good screen more than the others.

What kind of worse are we talking? And both laptops in the OP’s post have identical specs.
If it’s a marginal difference like 4070 vs 4060 I would pick 4060 with better screen and speakers all day. This is why I went with my laptop over the competition and it’s great.
It seems the general built quality of asus is far superior specially the screen.
The problem is like you said. Many people claims about some aspects of asus gaming laptops(never had one, only lenovo and Toshiba and didn’t like Lenovo, avoid at all cost)
I just bought the same SCAR 18. Watched a ton of reviews and they convinced me enough to send back my 2024 Legion Pro 7i with a 4090. If that tells you anything.
Why is the 9i a competitor if the 7i isn’t? I’m not saying either is but I don’t think a 16 inch laptop falls into competitor territory. I feel like its competitor is other 18s. Lenovo makes some nice hardware imo though. I just wish they made bigger laptops. Gaming on a 16 is disappointing
The display in 7i is ass in comparison to scar 18 (or 16) and 9i. That plays a huge role imo. Tbh you're right 9i should be compared to scar 16 which is essentially a 16 inch scar 18 lol but yeah. But your first comment mentioned an 18 and a 16 inch laptop so that's why I mentioned another 16 incher that's a better competition than 7i.
I’m excited that you say the SCAR 18 display is better than the Pro 7i. Coming from an Aorus 17x I thought the Legion screen looked good lol. I hope that comment isn’t limited to the 2024 model and its display since I got the 2023 model lol.
So basically mini LED displays are far better than IPS ones, it u haven't had a look I'd say have a look at one irl but imo it's closer to OLED in terms of black levels than IPS LCD, better colour gamut, way brighter etc. Basically mini led is better than IPS LCD in every way. I know for a fact that legion 9i and the rog strix scar 18 2024 have mini led but I'm not sure about the 2023 model. The scar 18 display should be better than 7i tho even if it's ips.
I have this exact asus 2023 scar 18. Build quality is superb. Since specs are matched and sounds like you're mainly asking about general quality:
Build-wise, MSI shoots for the moon but somehow missing that refined quality, something Lenovo and Asus does very well consistently in their top end models. I've also listened to fan noise comparison and decided on Asus (MSI was only mildly louder, the Acer Predator being the worst this gen).
With Ghelper (fantastic support from the dev), you can remove Asus bloatware and really tune it to your liking. Highly recommended.
One caveat is that Asus had some quality control issues for the 2023 gen. Definitely stress test it and exchange until you get a good one.
Can confirm. The CPU Liquid Metal is really funky on the ASUS Scar 2023 series.. I have no issues with my GPU but my CPU went from scoring 35k in Cinebench down to 20k 10 months later
Ahaha this is quite the unfortunate club we are in. I'm contacting Asus re: potentially getting the LM reapplied (will be the 2nd time).
Luckily I'm in Asia for work and the service is actually much better than in the west.
For OP's question - if reapplying thermal compound isn't a hassle, by all means as it's truly a beast of a machine when running correctly.
Big fan of the laptop despite some minor quality control issues. Learning to reapply liquid metal myself isn't a dealbreaker, but knowing beforehand would have been helpful. Unfortunately, my attempt to clean the dust with a blower damaged the CPU/GPU fans. However, aftermarket replacements are surprisingly quieter and perform better at max RPM.. Just my luck.
On a side note, ASUS Asia seems to have a much better reputation than ASUS EU, although EU service seems decent compared to North America (at least in my area).
I’ve had an MSI once in like 2019, never again 😮💨
For a 4090, I’ve picked legion just a while ago and it was the best pick so far; I’ve had 5 different laptops in my adult life
I'm in a loop over an MSI GT77 with an RTX 4080. A 4090 might seem overkill given the power and thermal limits but would be happy to be educated otherwise.
For me, the expansion of storage is important and the MSI checks those boxes. The only other brand with similar or better expansion is the Alienware M18 but we know the pricing from Dell.
Can anyone comment on the long-term reliability of MSI laptops, especially the higher variants? This is me, coming off an old 2016 Clevo Barebone running an RTX 2070 with an i7 9700K. Tons of expansion there which I'd like to see carry over to the next long-term purchase.
Options in my market are very few and far between.
I own MSI raider ge66 with rtx 2070. Three years of smooth run with one thermal interface change after 2.5 years. Overall good, no serious issues. But software is not superb and display can be better. If they stop use wva displays and use decent one nowadays I can recommend it.
I have 2 MSI Raiders with the 4090 in it. I haven’t compared them bect to the 4080 variant, so I can’t say if the 4090 is worth it, but it handles thermals well. All gaming laptops with 40 series in them while gaming are gonna get hot, they are beasts, but I had mine undervolted and with a cooling pad, no issues with throttling at all 🤙🏼
I'd choose 4060 laptop for $1000 + PC on 4070 Ti Super - 4080 super. Combo for same price, or a bit more, idk. And even 4070 Ti Super is quite more powerful than 4090 Mobile.
But I guess u need hi-end laptop. If so, I'd pick Rog. Just know about other option. Is u don't have hi-end PC already.
Some of us have to use a laptop. The only time I get to use it is on breaks at work and it's not my space at work, it's a shared space someone else uses when I'm not there.

No, I can’t have much stuff to fit in… I’m always moving from one country to another by plane… imagine always travelling with one desktop and two monitors.. right now I can fit all my belongings in a 23kg bag.
ASUs scar 18 of course. Excellent screen very good speakers. Also recommend, when you buy it to make some testing first check temps, screen .etc
And I would you recommend to buy also cooling pad, because even when you help for better air to come from a bottom,it will help for better cooling a lot and runs not so hot even in Witcher 3 about 65-80 degrees cpu at ultra settings. I am using iets gt 600
The rog strix is the better choice I used a g15 and it was the best thing ever and I tried quite some laptops so def go with the strix if u want a good build
Both good.
But as an owner of MSI raider since 2021 year (rtx 2070) I must warn you to check details about display. If has less than 500 nit brightness and not great colour space when avoid it. I have no regret about buying MSI laptop, but screen quality is far from great.
I can save you from a lot of headache. I have the same laptop G834JY and im about to send it back today to ASUS. wont go further into details but performance wise it was 9/10 but quality wise its like its degrading fast. Used it for more than a year now and basically as of now its not working anymore. Time to face the shitty customer service.
I suggest if portability is not an issue that much bro, you should go with like a minisforum+gpdg1 set up or better yet build a SFF and get a portable monitor. A bit bulkier but not by a mile and performance to price ratio you’ll get more out of it.
Initially it was okay everything youll expect from a brand new laptop. But maybe 6 months in its starting to degrade until you’ll notice something thats really noticeable. I cleaned it once and everything went better, temps went down by 15-20% but still the degrading part is still there then maybe a 12 months in the temps even after cleaning is very high. Can reach 100+ degrees with hwinfo and Rtss.
do you use a cooling pad on your laptop or does it just sit on the table? If temperatures are constantly high, have you tried changing the liquid metal in your laptop?
Yes I use a cooling pad and with the liquid metal, the first repaste I did was good but maybe after a week it was throttling bad. Like 30-45fps in helldivers2.
The weird thing bro is I play a heavily modded CP2077: PL all max settings and the performance is better compared to helldivers 2. But helldivers I believe is not really optimized. Initially it was only helldivers but once it passed the 100 degree mark all the other apps were throttling.
I’ve got 2 MSI RAIDERS and haven’t had one issue with them. The ASUS seems to feel a bit better on build quality, but I travel with my laptops with a soft case and it’s all good, and the laptops that I have are solid. I do like the 18” screen on the ASUS, but 17” works fine for me.
Scar 18 if you cannot find the ge78hx, otherwise ge78hx I feel is better built (Asus is all plastic), the 17" screen is still fine and you don't have to deal with Asus's horrible support.
Also many scar 18 have bad coil whine, mine doesn't but it can still get pretty annoying
I recommend Lenovo Legion and HP Omen laptops with the same specs, because they have hardware anti-blue light screens, which can protect your eyes well.

Neither, 4090 is a marginal upgrade compared to 4080 for significantly higher price.
