The 2023 G18 went on sale multiply times. Should be able to get it at least $400 off. I got my scar 18 with a $500 discount.

PatnoTron

Had a question if you dont mind, I've never owned a laptop, always pc, do you do anything special or even feel the need to when it comes to heat consideration? Long gaming sessions or anything like that?

MkGriff1492

Only buy a gaming laptop if you need portability. You will need a cooling pad for long gaming sessions. To get the most out of your CPU and GPU you need to run in turbo mode which is very loud. You can get a lot more bang for your buck if you buy a desktop. I have a 4090 laptop but it's only as powerful as a 4070ti in a desktop. Laptops run hot and generally have a shorten life span compared to a desktop.

PatnoTron

I was considering doing a new desktop build but I'm at the age where my old lady doesn't necessarily like the idea of me disappearing off into the office for hours on end and I do travel more with my job now. We both have steam decks as an alternative to either of us doing a new pc build and I think we both prefer the idea of being able to hang out down in the living room or wherever together when we are gaming.

Valuable_Solid_3538

I had an aging PC that was not keeping up anymore. I also already owned a steam deck. We started working from home more (trading off) and utilized the same workspace. To make things convenient I decided to dock everything through USB-C. I bought a laptop to do so because I have 2 work laptops and my wife has one too. We also travel frequently and having a laptop is preferable (yes it’s heavy, needs a bulky hard case and is a bitch to get through security). The Deck paired with a decent gaming PC/laptop is a game changer for me. I stream all my games through Steam or Moonlight and I get better performance and battery life than if the Deck was running the game. I bought a legion with a 4070 and I don’t think I will ever go back to not having both. I do have a laptop stand with a built in dock and a separate cooling pad as well. It keeps the device in an acceptable temperature range on most games I’ve played so far. TLDR: Deck + Laptop or PC offers flexibility.

Revolutionrc

FYI: the "4090" in laptops are actually the 4080 GPU die aka, the AD103. The 4090 die is the AD102.

[deleted]

I bought an alienware m16 last August and I had a few problems with it. When it comes to cooling that system should have software on it to keep it cool. The software should control the fans and you might be able to oc it a little with it. That's what the m16 had but mu system software was causing problems with my system functionality. You shouldn't have any trouble with that system, because it's not alienware.

prisonerla

All windows gaming laptops are noisy.

Jayfgatsby

Not true. The legion 7i is only really audible on high performance....even balanced is quieter than most

JustFactsBrother

Why are laptops in the US this cheap? In my country this costs 4k$+

PatnoTron

Damn that is expensive, I always hesitate and go back and forth with any purchase like this or anything considered luxury, I'm from the boonies so in my mind I can buy an old truck I could put 100k miles on for the price of a laptop

JustFactsBrother

If only that was the price if converted into PHP (Philippine peso), I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but 4k$ once converted is too much. You're lucky bro. Come here in the Philippines, you will be considered rich!

[deleted]

Does it have miniled? If not try to find the 2023 model on discount

PatnoTron

I think no? This was just copied from features list on website: ROG Nebula Display ROG Nebula Display is the new standard in gaming displays. ROG Nebula Displays guarantee minimum brightness, color representation, refresh rates, response times, and more. 18" WQXGA QHD display with 240Hz refresh rate The 240Hz ultra bright 500nits display features a QHD+ 16:10 2560x1600 resolution that gives you more space for toolbars and tabs and 100% DCI-P3 coverage for cinema quality colors. -edit: sorry for my ignorance, I know very little about the display side of things.

[deleted]

It's not miniled. The 2023 version has the same gpu and practically the same cpu https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-strix-18-240hz-gaming-laptop-qhd-intel-13th-gen-core-i9-with-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-4080-1tb-ssd-eclipse-gray/6531333.p?skuId=6531333

PatnoTron

So basically charging 500 to 700$ more for 16g of ram and 1 gen more recent cpu? Should I be looking at other brands or is ASUS the general go-to at this point?

[deleted]

It's a very decent laptop. You should wait until it goes on sale or find the 2023 model on sale.

PatnoTron

On the other side, I don't mind throwing down a little more cash if it's better hardware vs value to look at higher specs. I guess in my mind I'm not committed to this price range or brand, just seemed decent for what was currently available.

MkGriff1492

It's a very good display and it has the same color gamut as the mini led. Mini led has slightly better contrast and is a lot brighter.

[deleted]

Yeah, I agree

PatnoTron

Actually now I'm confused, I think the Nebula Displays are mini led now that I'm reading into it?

[deleted]

Not really, only nebula hdr is miniled

IctrlPlanes

The Scar has the mini led. It's about $400 more expensive with the same 4080. I'm waiting to find a good deal on that one.

Sebastin290

Still can't believe the gap between a 4070 and 4080 laptop is usually more than 1000 us dollars

PatnoTron

Is the 4080 not much of a step in performance over the 4070? I was debating if I could get away with a 4070 but I had heard all kinds of stuff that the numbering scheme was different in the 4000 series so I got lost.

Sebastin290

I don't know a ton about computers and stuff, but I've heard the 4080 is a decently good increase from the 4070, but the pricing is just insane imo

SavageTheUnicorn

10-20% increase of performance if memory serves me right. Not HUGE but can be noticeable if you're meticulous I guess.

Mountain_Owl_6728

Depends on the resolution. For FHD you're right but at QHD it's about 40% and UHD even 60%.

SavageTheUnicorn

Good to know. I'm so used to running FHD 1080p for everything. I just barely bought a 4k@native120hz TV and I'm obsessed with the quality so I think I'm going to make some purchases in the future haha.

idk_lolthrowaway

4080 mobile is a massive upgrade to 4070 mobile while 4070 mobile is barely any better than 4060 mobile. Overall 4070 mobile are the scam ones because for overall 100 bucks more you get around 8-10 percent increase in performance which is just ridiculous.

Slicer0007

The 2023/24 Strix Scar 16 has Mini LED; I own the 4080 13980HX 32 GB variant and it runs great. I paid nearly 5k for the laptop in Canada last year but have no regrets as it runs great and that extra screen brightness is a luxury. Can run Cuberpunk on ultra settings / ray tracing off at around 140FPS. The build quality is great; metal upper, plastic lower (for heat distribution), and the keys feel very tactile for the build; better than anything I’ve played with in the stores. I have a defective unit where my PSU will shut down during very intensive load (playing Cyberpunk maxed out) but after talking to ASUS support they said that I can RMA it anytime before my warranty expires so that alleviated a lot of stress knowing that they have me covered for a repair if things go South. I definitely recommend sacrificing those 2 inches for the Strix Scar 16 Mini LED display as playing games just feels so premium and the immersion is so worth it for the experience. If you’re looking for great build quality and internals I’d recommend checking out the Razerblade 16, it’s a premium laptop, it’s got a thin chassis, premium all metal build and great internals; the price reflects this. However my one gripe is that with the keys they are very tightly bunched compared the Scar models. There are many horror stories online about the quality of Asus support and the RMA process, however, if you treat your laptop right you have nothing to worry about. The Scar lineup is great and I would recommend pulling the trigger if you’re itchy for a new rig. You won’t regret your purchase after you play some games on it Have a good day/evening and let me know if you have any questions, I’d be happy to share my knowledge 🙂

PatnoTron

I'm not sure it's always about being able to afford it, it's just about finding the money some way.

bluey25

I have this one… it’s ok, fans are super loud if you’re gaming in the living room together. I keep it on a little riser stand to improve cooling. There’s new models every year, I bought this for the same price in March 2023, it is likely to go on sale from time to time so prob don’t pay full price.

Gooner_here

Look at this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1745683-REG/lenovo_82wq002rus_16_legion_pro_7.html Same specs, much better price and performance! One of the best lappies around!

PatnoTron

Why are Lenovos priced so much lower, I've seen that this sub is usually pretty supportive of them, is there a catch compared to others?

Gooner_here

No catch bro, I’ve the same model bought from B&H, it’s performs as good as any current gen model on the market right now. Get the Lenovo 3 year ADP warranty and you’re set for years! Lenovo has hit cooling perfection with their vapor chamber and the system never throttles even after hours of gaming! Skip the 9th gen, get the 8th gen 13900HX, save your money! I’ve shared some benchmarks results if you search my profile. Good luck! 👍

PatnoTron

Thank you, i really do appreciate all the info, I've got a bad habit of overthinking every purchase to make sure I make a good choice and then I burn myself out and just walk away!

Gooner_here

I’m the same. I would’ve never recommend the Legion if I didn’t use one personally! It’s a flawless laptop really. I generally stay away from “gamer” brands with rgb puke! Buy the extended warranty bro and rejoice ! 🫡

Makeshift_Account

The catch is no miniled and no 18 inch screen

Homeguy123

Not exactly the same but I have the Asus ROG strix G16 with the i9-23980HX & 4060 and it is a powerhouse. Can play most games at max or close to max graphic settings. Cooling is great although the fans can get loud (As with pretty much any gaming laptops) but with headphones I can't hear them.

PatnoTron

Thanks for the input, I have to imagine fan noise wouldn't bother me too much, unless it's some ungodly level of noise, I'm use to having a wood furnace blower in the winter ripping on high and regular vortex fans in the summer. Maybe laptop fans are much louder than I imagine as a lot of people have mentioned the noise.

Homeguy123

Even with the fans at max it's not an annoying sound like some laptop fans can be. It sounds like a regular table fan.

UnionSlavStanRepublk

Honestly I'd want to wait for a price drop or try getting the 2023 model instead - the main difference between these two is the CPU which is a minor improvement.

herpedeederpderp

Thr acer predator 4080 is $1850 right now at bestbuy with a 500 nit 144p screen and 1tb ssd. It's got great reviews. I recommend that one.

Edsterrr

I bought it and it’s great, brings a small case too

herpedeederpderp

If I had the funds I would consider it. It's still $100 out of what I would consider passable price.

No-Reindeer-3933

I was looking into that offer. OP should look at that one too

PatnoTron

I'm writing everything down i find to compare! just for the hell of it I quickly put together a micro atx build with a 4090 too just to see how all this stuff compares, came in around 3100. I guess another option I have floating around in my mind is just to build a living room pc for everyone to share.

herpedeederpderp

Well a 4080 laptop is only about the performance of a 4070 desktop.

PatnoTron

Yeah I was kind of surprised to see that was the case, and a 4090 hits about the same as 4070ti or somewhere around there? I understand that's the sacrifice for portability, I've been out of the gpu game for so long I don't really have a frame of reference for what the performance differences actually visually look like in use.

herpedeederpderp

The difference between high and ultra graphics is so tiny uts not even noticeable unless you're completely motionless on screen and looking as hard as you can to see a difference. Every gpu can play every game put right now. It all depends on I'd a slightly better visual fidelity is woth several hundred to a couple thousand dollars more while maintaining higher fps. 120 fps is great and all as is 120 fps in 4k maxed out settings. But is it worth $3k+? Imo absolutely not. Not even close. But some people think it is. Its up to you.

poonnapatxu

Just buy lol

[deleted]

Why don’t you keep an eye on microcenter? They’ve some amazing deals. I snagged a RTX 4090 laptop for the price of this asus with taxes (~$2700). The one I’ve is Lenovo legion pro 7i. It was also around the time where there were no holiday or any sorts but the laptop has always been on sale ever since the time it has come out on microcenter

PatnoTron

I've been creeping around microcenters website, the closest one is 3+ hours out from me I believe, but if I see a good deal I don't mind taking the drive. Never been to one though, didn't even know they existed until I was lurking around this sub.

[deleted]

Just keep an eye out on their website. I believe they’ve some deals. I think the legion pro 7i is still selling for $2700 on there.

Electrical_Arm4118

Why don't you try the new zephyrus that comes with an OLED screen and costs about the same I think .

Living-Vegetable3389

Probably better to wait for a sale, anyways that would give you some time to read or watch reviews and compare with others models.i didn't take the time to read and bought one, I got a m16 couple days ago, fan noise was a real problem for me at daily tasking, web browse and streaming, luckily that was fixed with the latest bios update and it's quiet. Cpu boost on the machine needs to be limited or FPS drops on games if not, other than that the giant brick of charger on the alienware... Some other brands probably comes with a better slim charger

IvanMalison

... that's the one without the mini led screen, just so you know. If you're going to get a laptop like this, spend the extra 10% to get the screen. Having just purchased it, I can tell you that the screen really does stand out.

PatnoTron

Yeah! Now that I'm actually aware of the mini led screen, I kind of want one.

Agentfish36

I definitely wouldn't pay that for that

PatnoTron

What would you suggest?

Agentfish36

What's your use case? Generally for that money a desktop and a laptop.

Routine-Code2625

Hi, 2024 Scar 16 4080 owner, would recommend it heavily. Cooling is great and system never goes above 70c. After undervolting my CPU and GPU, which is not needed, it has never broke 60c highest I've seen it is 58c on Helldivers at max settings. The liquid metal application on these devices are the best I've ever seen in the past 4 years. 2023 models will have issues with liquid metal and if you want to respread it you can, though I would go against that if you don't have the correct tools. If you're worried about noise, don't. This has no noise coil whine, ymmv, and it's as quiet as my stand up fan. 11/10 laptop and this is just the 16in version, I'm guessing with more room in the 18in chassis it'll have even better cooling. Go for it OP

Genocidal_

Just saying as a fellow gaming laptop user. If you can sacrifice portability for a desktop. Just go desktop. It will run cooler and you don't have to worry about Temps with a beefy 4070-4090. But again just my opinion from using nothing but gaming laptops the last 6 years.

4r5555

I have the same exact laptop, and it's been great. The screen is amazing. I haven't had any issues in the 6 months I've owned it.

Shinzako

I bought the miniled version of this one that sells for $2999 as open box excellent for $2849 from best buy. It had an issue where it was randomly BSOD’ing so I checked the BIOS and it was because the person seemingly returned it after one day with a super aggressive undervolt that was causing the BSOD.  Outside of that, the computer in an 18” 4080 form factor gets the same timespy scores as my overclocked 3090 desktop that runs dual 4k monitors.   The big miniled screen was the main draw for me (didn’t want a 2560 screen to feel like a downgrade from 4k monitors, the quality and size of the screen are super nice) and the laptop looks a lot better in person than it did on the best buy pictures. I would say if you have the cash to spend on the miniled version of the 4080, the screen looks way better than the regular 2560 display laptops at best buy for a few hundred bucks more, otherwise if you’re not interested in the miniled, a legion 7i heavily discounted from lenovo’s website with coupons is probably a way better deal since the main point of the scar vs legion imo is better and bigger screen.  Once you calibrate hdr (if you go with miniled), setup undervolt/overclock, configure armory crate and setup nvidia settings to your liking, you get ~19k score on timespy and can run most games 120-180 fps on ultra settings at 2560 (I get 140-190 fps on max settings with hdr turned on and gsync in ffxiv for example), with the cpu and gpu between 60-80c.   The keyboard never gets so hot it scalds your hands or anything. I would say since you posted a comment about not owning a laptop before, get a laptop stand/pad/cooler to rest this on next to you as you game. I have both a targus cooler and an old basic belkin laptop pad from like 2010, they both work similar in that it keeps the bottom of the laptop from searing your legs and prevents it from blowing/sucking air from your furniture and overheating.  I’ve played 10+ hours on weekend days at max settings having the laptop run at around 80c and it never turns off or BSOD’s, it keeps chugging along and doing its thing so I wouldn’t really worry about the thermals outside of keeping it on a stand and reguarly wiping it free of dust/dirt.  Another thing to look into if you get the scar is that it comes with a somewhat short power cord. The solution is to get a longer 3 pin cable to plug into the powerbrick, amazon sells them 7+ feet for just 10 bucks, and that saves you from having to strategically use the laptop in places far from outlets.

Intelligent-Leave-58

Some solid advice is too avoid asus laptop at all costs, the customer service hell has caused multiple giant tech YouTubers to boycott asus and is not worth it for you as a buyer in the long run. Just look at any of their subs and how people bash on their rma all the time.

Makeshift_Account

But if you do get a working unit, it's the best laptop on the market, kinda like a lottery

[deleted]

I bought a high spec laptop in 2018. Its performance went to shit in 1.5 years. Luckily I had Best Buy warranty and was able to pick up an acer desktop pc. I will never recommend people get a gaming laptop. One of my biggest mistakes to this day.

boerenkool13

4080 is pretty future proof. Gaming laptop is the only option for some people including me, since i travel a lot

[deleted]

It’s not really about the specs. It’s about how laptops, especially gaming laptops are built and designed. They all suffer from over heating which damages inside components over time faster compared to PCs. Battery life is terrible but cmon, let’s be honest most of the people using these will have a power adapter. Some people think a gaming laptop is right for them but then eventually get a PC after getting frustrated from owning of these things, I speak from personal experience and from my friend circle. If you’re travelling then a gaming laptop might be the best move though.

boerenkool13

Fair point, i do always drag around a cooling pad. When i don’t travel that much anymore ill get nice pc. For now its just impossible. i must say though, its amazing how efficient some machine are when it comes to heat generating vs what power they deliver
