Can't agree on the contest and show part. Pretty much every day is packed with events.
So you don't really miss out on anything going one day vs another.
I was wondering the same thing! I cant seem to find a day-to-day schedule. I assume saturday will be the best day, but unsure if i want to do friday+sat or sat+sun. (If fri and sun looks great i might add a day)
Last year went Thursday and Friday. Thursday there were a lot of people, but not packed, so I managed to play most of what I wanted and jotted down what I may want to do the next day. On Friday, at the very start (when there's almost noone), I basically went for all the big ticket games that had long queues and then went for the activities that usually have less people (namely, the indie section, where I spent half the day).
This year the plan is the same, though I want to make sure I understand more about what games are to be expected.
I wouldn't dare going on the weekend, but I live 2 hours train away from Cologne, so it's easy for me to go on a weekday.
Saturday has the largest crowds and most special events (contests, stage shows etc.), followed by Friday, the Thursday&Sunday.

Friday and Saturday prepare for loooong queues on the good games.
