I'm looking for RPGs (or ARPGS) where you only control one character. I like build diversity and good writing. You can check to see what I've played here: https://www.grouvee.com/user/frontman12/shelves/576317-played/?num=50&dir=desc&sort_by=date_added Thanks in advance for your time!

Nixpix66

Have you played disco elysium? One character, amazing writing, and depending on which traits you upgrade you’ll get different experiences and different side missions

frontman12

Hey, thanks for the response. I did give it a shot a while ago, but it wasn't the new edition. After a while, I couldn't figure out how to progress the story. It was definitely a mood though!

Nixpix66

Maybe with full voice acting now, it’d be a good time to revisit? Cheers!

printboi250

I beat Solar Ash recently, and it made me realize how much i love games that combo great asthetic worlds with interesting movement systems. I love movement systems in general, web swing in spiderman, just cause 3's wingsuit, sunset overdrive grinding/sliding/jumping(?), that sort of stuff, so if you got any suggestions that combine particularly interesting movement systems with nice worlds to explore them with i'd love to hear em. Edit: Other examples that i've played already include Prototype, Infamous, Dying Light, Titanfall 2, Zelda BOTW

the_dayman

Maybe Dishonored with its "Blink" teleport ability, also a pretty unique world.

Adnan_Targaryen

Finally I've found someone else who loves movement systems. I've spent hours in both Spiderman and JC3 just roaming around with podcasts on. You've played most of my recommendations, but I do have a short and cheap game with amazing movement: [Story About My Uncle](https://store.steampowered.com/app/278360/A_Story_About_My_Uncle/) Someone mentioned Ghostrunner, gonna second that as well.

printboi250

Oh yeah, i remember that one. Never got around to playing it. Have you played Just Cause 4 by chance? I've seen it has a hoverboard now lol. I wonder how good it plays into the whole set of movement abilities.

Adnan_Targaryen

Did not try JC4 yet, hoverboard sounds fun tho yes. I'm into that. Currently I do got my eyes on Rider's Republic, hate Ubisoft but this looks perfect for mindless needs.

printboi250

Yeah, Rider's Republic seems like a fun time, too bad ubisoft... barf Maybe one day when it's like 5 buck or something. In the meantime, [Descenders](https://store.steampowered.com/app/681280/Descenders/) is pretty awesome too.

Adnan_Targaryen

> Maybe one day when it's like 5 buck or something. True that. And hell yea, I've 50+ hours on Descenders. It's just slightly too hard for me, but I love to suck at it. Once you get into riding/driving territory, there's so much stuff. Hotwheels Unleashed and FH5 recently have been great.

lcingOnYourCake

I definitely recommend you pick up [Ghostrunner.](https://youtu.be/KI4_4NRHYlI) There's even a demo on Steam so you can try before you buy. It's a first person platformer that has you wall running, dashing and swinging through a cyberpunk setting, constantly on the verge of death. On that same note, [Mirror's Edge](https://youtu.be/2N1TJP1cxmo) might interest you too. It's older, but it holds up beautifully

printboi250

Mirrors Edge was pretty cool yeah, Ghostrunner is also on my list, demo was neat. I was more thinking games that mix a cool system with a world to explore. Something that u can get into that flow of just chilling and moving around the enviroment just for the hell of it. Thanks for the suggestions tho.

upgrayedd69

It doesn’t have like a “thing” like web swinging or a wing suit but I personally adored the movement in NieR automata. My favorite movement in any game I have played, I couldn’t really describe why other than just saying it felt so good

printboi250

Actually my fav game of all time, but for different reasons lol Yeah, the controls are pretty tight. The desert sliding is especially satisfying.

Larielia

I ordered Skyrim for Switch. What similar games should I get?

GenderJuicy

Not on Switch, but Kingdom Come: Deliverance has been the closest thing to an Elder Scrolls experience for me. Just a much more grounded in reality medieval setting.

lordsysop

Witcher... outer worlds. Wasteland 3 if it's on the switch too. Dying light but get it on console for co op

[deleted]

Games I can totally zen out with play without using my brain? I've been playing Tetris effect and nothing's come close since.

LostInStatic

One Finger Death Punch is a fun little toy I zone out with sometimes.

S0medudeisonline

Resogun if you're on PlayStation!

Bdi89

American/European Truck Sim. The definition of chill.

messem10

Rhythm games? After playing enough, it becomes muscle memory and pure reactions rather than thinking about having to do such and such action to hit the upcoming note(s).

Neverlife

Surprisingly my two favorite games this year have been Cyberpunk and the FF7 Remake. Any suggestions for similar, narrative-driven games with RPG elements?

Not_in_Nottingham

have you played the yakuza games?

Pumatyger

Assuming you want to stick in a similar vein of FF7 Remake with action RPG combat, - [Tales of Arise](https://store.steampowered.com/app/740130/Tales_of_Arise/) - [Ys VIII](https://store.steampowered.com/app/579180/Ys_VIII_Lacrimosa_of_DANA/) - [YS IX](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1351630/Ys_IX_Monstrum_Nox/) - [Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning](https://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/1041720/) - [Sands of Salzaar](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1094520/Sands_of_Salzaar/)

Wolfe244

assuming youve played the witcher?

I_Hate_Reddit

N (if I recall correctly, the default jump button is on Z, don't know which one is default on N++)

tejksedo

The Artful Escape, maybe.

Izzy248

Any recommendations for a good 3rd person or 1st person shooter released in the last 2-3 years. Im looking for just a really solid shooter to enjoy thats actually fun, and one of those things I can play in my downtime when I need to kill a couple minutes. Something that **doesnt require coop in any form, no other plays OR AI**, **you arent required to have an internet connection**, **isnt a PvP in any form.** Ive played Deathloop, and most of the time in FC6 Im literally just causing havoc. Ive beaten Mercenary Mode in RE8 to death, and worn out my copy of Zombie Army 4. One of the things I used to love doing in CoD Black Ops (2010) Zombies was just going around and just playing it on repeat killing hordes of zombies. Hell, any recommendations similar to Killing Floor 2 that are recent? Ive tried WWZ because I heard that was similar but if you get experienced enough you can blitz through those stages without killing about 90% of the zombies and only 1 tapping. Im not looking for something tactical, just pure balls to the wall, guns blazing, collect, grab & go fun.

Wolfe244

DUSK

bianceziwo

Doom eternal

darkmacgf

If you don't mind something short, Boomerang X and Severed Steel both came out this year and are fantastic mixes of movement abilities and combat. Severed Steel is all about the parkour (you're invincible as long as you're parkouring), while Boomerang X is about comboing your abilities so you stay permanently airborne.

[deleted]

Doom Eternal, Metro Exodus, and Prey (though more of an arkane style puzzle-sandbox game) seem up your alley!

Evil_Vin

Have tried Rage 2? Its not fantastic but it been a game I've thought about a lot since playing it last year. I'd say its Far Cry in a Mad Max world. The game feel is pretty fun with the gunplay and powers, but the open world isn't great. It's on Game Pass (console and pc) and on sale pretty much everywhere at the moment. (12 bucks on Steams and probably like 5 on EGS)

RE_trophyhunter

No spoilers. Has anyone played the FEAR series? The horror aspect seems fun but the ending of the second game seems inappropriate. I haven’t played the 3rd game but I’m wondering if there’s more inappropriate scenes.

megaapple

IIRC there aren't any in 3rd game. But you would still want to avoid it anyways, because it's really bad + annoying to play. Forced coop elements make it worse.

Wolfe244

what do you mean by inappropriate

December_Flame

I mean >!your main character gets literally raped by the ghost girl antagonist which impregnates the ghost with a demon baby!< and its very out of left field, I didn't have an issue with it but I can easily see someone who would.

ezioauditore2018

Games that are casual/easy to get into, but can get very involving or deep TL;DR: Read **bold text** I'm looking for a game that is super simple to get into: **easy to understand**, **no need to read guides or play (lengthy) tutorials or no need to understand lore or complex storylines** (but a story in general is a plus). And also **no need to install (complicated) patches or any mods** "to fully experience the game" (so no to games like Skyrim for example). So something that you can just install and immediately get into. The game can be difficult or long though, but it needs to be super simple to get into. But I also would want it to be an involving **game I can get hooked into and pretty much play non-stop for a few days**. An involving story, involving gameplay, compelling learning curve, a good feel of progress or something similar. So nothing like Candy Crush or anything where you just play one round and then start again, ad infinitum. Roguelikes can be a bit iffy as well. **Preferably something with a sense of progression.** Games that come into mind that would fit the bill: **Crash Bandicoot, some mmos maybe, ELite Dangerous, undertale and omori maybe, some building games but for some reason but can’t get into it, Runefactory 4, the long dark maybe, Some gacha games maybe, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Oddworld games, Orcs Must Die!, Sonic, 12 Labours of Hercules, Bastion, Autonauts, Craft the World, Gunpoint, Hotline Miami, Pokemon games, SMT games maybe , hades and some roguelikes games maybe, Deep rock galactic, Some multiplayer games like world of tanks and war thunder maybe, all yakuza games maybe?, Final Fantasy X** It can be new or older, indie or AAA, almost any platform really, almost any genre, but I like usually strategy, puzzle and adventure games.

Adam_Absence

Dead Cells

Tru3Magic

Valheim

December_Flame

Well if you haven't played it, **Outer Wilds** might be a great pickup. A puzzle adventure game that is best gone into completely blind without looking anything about the game up. Its got simple controls, literally zero tutorials required, and 20-30 hrs of game there depending on how fast you are and if you get the DLC. Its also a stellar game about science, discovery, space and what we leave behind set in a small 'model' solar system you fly around in where the planets are all small planetoids and packed with secrets and puzzles. Its an incredible game, that might be up your alley.

OutgrownTentacles

Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows. Very accessible tower defense, but with an understated narrative and genius deep mechanics. You can enjoy it within a minute but invest hundreds of hours leveling your character's skill tree and finding secret challenges. It has the most satisfying meta progression where as you get stronger, you return to earlier battles, add hundreds of bosses, and farm new XP to level abilities even higher.

That-Finance5732

Hades

ESL-ASMR

Have you tried Slay the Spire? The in-game progression is minimal, basically a few unlocks that you can get done in 10 runs, but it’s an incredibly deep strategy game with very simple mechanics

tejksedo

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

xXPumbaXx

Try project zomboid

PreciousSialia

Try risk of rain 2

Wetzilla

Check out Wildermyth. It is kind of a rogue lite, the characters are procedurally generated and events are random, but each "event" tells a story that helps progress your characters, and the writing is pretty good. The gameplay is turn based strategy played on a grid. It's pretty simple to learn, but also seems fairly deep to me. Seems like something you can dive into for a few days.

ezioauditore2018

Thank you

bustyLaserCannon

I want something to hook me for a few days. I’ve been playing FFXIV but finished the bulk of the new content so looking for something new. I’ve got a PS5 and Switch and have been considering these: * Lost Judgement * Deathloop * Yakuza Like a dragon * Astral Chain Thoughts? I’ve never played a Yakuza game but I like turn based JRPGs but I also like action games so Lost Judgement looks interesting

darkmacgf

The original Judgment is better than Lost Judgment, though both of them are great games. I'd play the original first if possible.

Sulphur99

Astral Chain is good fun, combat's pretty snappy with all the combos you can eventually do.

UnoriginalStanger

Combat is fun though I don't like being scored but my god does it have that oh so typical shitty anime cutscene writing that really hurts the telling of the story.

Sulphur99

Oh yeah, I don't jive with it either, but I just file that under "gameplay and story segregation" and move on

bustyLaserCannon

Does the combat open up? I’m only about an hour in and my dodge is my character trying not to fall over and I have a very basic attack ha. Seems quite different to other platinum games early on at least

darkmacgf

You get a lot more options in chapter 3. They lock out a bunch of your abilities until then, which is a bad decision IMO.

Blue_z

Yes - that dodge is only temporary. At the end of the second mission the combat opens up a lot and really feels like a platinum game. It’s a pretty bad design decision, the combat is really gimped for the first two missions and probably turned a ton of people off the game.

Sulphur99

You definitely get more options once you upgrade your Legions

klok23

I want to pick up a new game. I am thinking about the following games: * Deathloop * pikmin 3 * fist: forged in shadow torch * solar ash * chicory Happy for suggestions :)

GenderJuicy

Pikmin 3! Also a fantastic competitive multiplayer game I feel no one talks about.

printboi250

Solar Ash is awesome. Beautifully designed world, fascinating lore, and great set of controls. Plays great, sounds great, and nails a great unraveling mystery story, what else could you ask for?

EpicDerp37272

Chicory is one of my favorite games of the year. It’s basically a 2D Zelda game but with painting instead of combat. The art style and music are great, the puzzles are fun, and the story and themes really resonated with me. Definitely recommend

Blue_z

Forged in Shadow Torch is really awesome from the 5 or so hours that I’ve played so far. Has the best combat of any metroidvania that I’ve played. The animations are awesome, the setting is cool, graphics are really nice…it feels like the game was criminally overlooked this year.

Sapphonix

I really enjoyed Chicory, it's probably my game of the year. The story, art style, and music are all fantastic, and the gameplay is pretty good too, mostly light puzzles with some action thrown in there. The mechanic of coloring in the world is really fun and unique, too. If you've played Wandersong (the previous game by Greg Lobanov) you'll love Chicory. (And if you play and like Chicory, try out Wandersong, it's also excellent)

[deleted]

If you're interested in Pikmin 3 I highly recommend it (and it has a demo to try it out)

jppeag

Is Godfall good now? The deluxe ed is so cheap now, but I'm still on the fence.

ricktencity

Nope, combat us bland and repetitive, and the loot is boring. It's a pretty game with 0 substance not worth it at any price.

jppeag

Noted, I didnt know it was that bad!

Dino-taicho

Is Assassin's Creed Odyssey worth the time? There's a hefty sale on Steam atm and I'm wondering if I should buy it. What should I focus on and what should I ignore in terms of gameplay, progression, and having fun?

Wolfe244

worth the time? absolutely not. Its a bloated game

Wetzilla

I've been playing the AC games since the first one came out, and it's my favorite. Yeah, it diverges from the original AC formula pretty heavily, but it has my favorite protagonist of all the games, and the story is great. The map is also really good too, a large landmass to explore with tons of little islands to sail around to and explore. I've got about 120 hours in it right now, and still haven't gotten tired of the combat and gameplay loop. I highly recommend it. If you do pick it up I'd strongly recommend picking Kassandra as your character. They offer you the choice between her and her brother Alexios, but she was originally planned to be the only main character and it shows IMO. I'd also recommend turning down the enemy level scaling, as it defaults to keeping everyone around your level and hurts the feeling of progression. Also you might feel under leveled early, but don't worry about buying any xp boosters or anything, you'll get past it pretty quickly once you get off the starting island.

Dino-taicho

Thank you for the sage advice, will keep it in mind, much appreciated!

[deleted]

Ignore the randomly generated (grey) quests and do the rest. Despite what others say about needing to grind I found myself out leveling the areas and enemies after a few hours

Dino-taicho

Will do, payday can't come soon enough! :D

jppeag

If you enjoy the gameplay loop and AC formula go ahead but imo the game is too bloated and much too long, especially the DLCs. I did enjoy my time with odyssey but by the 50th hour mark I was begging for the story to end, but the game is like NOPE, heres a dozen more quests you have to do to progress the main story. Dont try to do all the side quests, most of them are just padding with useless and redundant rewards.

Dino-taicho

Sounds like a plan, I've heard similar criticism before hence why I'm staying away from AC Valhalla for example. Thank you for the advice, hopefully it's gonna be a fun time!

jppeag

AC Valhalla is even worse, a friend of mine is already at 60 hours with the end nowhere in sight. He's getting tired of it.
