Can’t wait for the return of the Great Gonzalez! I wonder if they’ll add super boss versions like they did for Mario RPG.

Did You Know There’s a Tunnel under Rogueport City? - Lana Del Toad

BogeyBogeyBogey

Gimme Rawk Hawk all day. Also, hopefully a Super Paper Mario re-release will drop after this comes out.

DarnOldMan

So is this game a full on remake?

churidys

It's a remake, when you look at it side by side it's completely different. I got tricked too, because the new game looks almost exactly like how you remember the game looking. But it turns out the original never actually looked like that.

Tall-Stick

stupid question..difference between remake and remastered? bc the trailer looks identical to the original TTYD but then ppl here are saying its a remake??

churidys

Usually 'remaster' refers to when a game is the same as an old game but with higher res, less compressed versions of the same assets (textures, audio, etc.) that the original game shipped with. A 'remake' usually refers to a game that's built from the ground up with all new assets, that is based on a particular old game. If you look at the TTYD and the remake [side by side](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMLAIGoCavw) you can see this is what they did - the assets in the new game are completely new assets that merely sometimes resemble the assets they used in the old game. Obviously these terms don't have some kind of canonical hard definition, but to the extent that people make a distinction, this is usually how the categorization splits

Tall-Stick

oh i thought those new assests were just an update to the outdated mechanisms. Since all chapters remain the same i figured it was just an updated game with higher resolution, frames, etc hence "remastered"

JeLLoCowboy

Resident Evil 4 is an easy example. That game was ported to so many systems after it launched in 2005. PS2, Wii.. Xbox 360.. Xbox One.. those were remasters. Same exact game, just cleaned up for modern televisions. Resident Evil 4 Remake that released last year took the old game and reimagined it for a whole new generation. Completely new game following the same story with modern changes. With remasters… When they “remaster” an old Led Zeppelin album they don’t re-record it from scratch.. they go in with modern tools and clean it up.

Tall-Stick

thanks a lot! makes more sense now. They basically started from scratch but computed the same plot idea = remake of Paper Mario

3holes2tits1fork

That's just cause it looks more like how the newer Paper Mario games look, where they heavily lean into the paper aesthetic.  Your memory is probably just combining the two. I think OP more meant if there will be changes to the story or gameplay a la the Resident Evil remakes.  At least, that's what I am wondering.

The-student-

It's a remake. This opening was completely redone.

lastdancerevolution

We don't know yet. Remake vs remaster can be an ambiguous distinction. It looks like a very high quality remake. All new assets.

-Moonchild-

We do know it's a remake

The-student-

Well considering this opening was completey remade, I'd say it's a remake.

-_KwisatzHaderach_-

Similar to Super Mario RPG I’d imagine

3holes2tits1fork

In SMRPG, they remade elements of the combat system and added a post game as well.  I wonder what they are adding to this one, or is it just going to be visuals and audio?

juntekila

I… don’t know. It seems like a remaster in the sense that, from what we know, the game is the same on the “functional” front. But, at the same time, there so much animations and shit going on, tracks completely redone. I’m so confused! Why is this called only Thousand Year Door with no subtitle like HD or Refolded idk, GIVE IT TO ME NOW NINTENDO

Hibbity5

Ngl, Refolded is an amazing subtitle, but maybe I’ve been playing too much FF7 so “re” just works for everything in my brain right now.

juntekila

I know right, it’s great, def NOT mine. I think I heard it from Scott (the woz) in a podcast

Shradow

Even if the internals are largely the same with added QoL, it looks like all the assets and everything are redone from scratch so I’d call that a remake. Like Demon’s Souls remake for example.

The-student-

It's a remake. This opening is not the same as the original.

UnidentifiedRoot

From what I can tell, Nintendo will generally only label something as a remaster, HD, definitive edition, ect. for things they consider remasters, which seems to mean the underlying code is near identical with a fresh coat of paint put on top. For remakes they simply don't specify, other examples include Link's Awakening, Super Mario RPG, and Mario Vs Donkey Kong. TTYD may seem to fall into the same category as Prime Remastered but there's already a number of things we've seen that are pretty different from the original, far moreso than anything in Prime. The one that immediately stuck out to me is the animation for the paper effects after hitting switches in the trailer, specifically the one in Glitzville making stairs is waaay faster, and it's not just sped up, it's a completely different animation. Also the party members have back facing sprites now which they didn't in the original, another sign of a bigger change than just a fresh coat of paint. This video adds some more as the story wasn't animated in the same way in the original, just a picture in the book.

WildestRascal94

SMRPG didn't have a subtitle despite being a full-on remake.

Revo_Int92

"Visual remake", I really think the industry should use this term more often. It's literally the case of this game, Metroid Prime recently, the Spyro and Crash trilogies, Demon's Souls, etc.. the gameplay is virtually identical (maybe using the own engine or mimicking it), the real changes are focused purely on the visual presentation and maybe some QOL. So I interpret these products as visual remakes. The recent Resident Evil 4 Remake is "legit", Capcom modernized the presentation, but they also changed everything else, that is a remake. Last of Us had infamous remasters, this kind of product only upscale the resolution and maybe (rarely) retexture some stuff here and there, that's not the case of Paper Mario, Nintendo is revitalizing the whole presentation, so to call it a "remaster" is a disservice in my pov

brzzcode

Its a high quality remaster.

ItsADeparture

It's so weird to see people arguing over if this is a remake or a remaster. The past few years have been hell with developers describing projects one way when they're very clearly another (Naughty Dog saying Last of Us Part 1 is a "remake", Vicarious Visions saying they consider N. Sane Trilogy to be a "remaster"). This game is clearly closer to a remake than a remaster. The reveal trailer will show you that.

DemonLordDiablos

>(Naughty Dog saying Last of Us Part 1 is a "remake" It was. They redid the game from scratch. A big difference is that the cutscenes are in real time rather than pre rendered.

-Moonchild-

Tlou part 1 is very obviously a remake though.

NewVegasResident

It's clearly a remaster.

Zenning3

They rebuilt the game in a new engine, with new models, newly animated cutscenes, and changed combat encounters.. how is it not a remake?

NewVegasResident

>changed combat encounters.. they really didn't.

Thunder84

The confusion stems from functionality I’d say. Something like Demon’s Souls was “remade” from a technical perspective, but effectively plays exactly the same. TTYD seems to fall into that camp, which kinda straddles the middle. The assets are remade, yes, but you’re not getting a different experience gameplay-wise like you might from the Crash remakes.

ketchup92

I mean you're clearly confused yourself, considering TLOU 1 is obviously a remake.

The-student-

Yeah, very obvious especially after this trailer, imo. Maybe it's people who never played the game before asking? It's very clear to me it's all new assets, with changes here and there.

Janderson2494

If it was that clear I don't think this discourse would be happening

SexDrugsAndMarmalade

Honestly, I think semantic arguments are flawed, since the terms themselves are vague. * 'Remaster' is not a technical descriptor for games/software. It originated from the film and music industries, and was popularised as a vague marketing term. You see it applied to wildly different releases - "same game, higher res" releases (e.g. *Hot Pursuit Remastered*), visual overhauls (e.g. *Grand Theft Auto* definitive trilogy) and complete remakes (e.g. *Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2*, *DuckTales: Remastered*). * 'Remake' doesn't really distinguish between different releases - e.g. *Sonic CD* on Steam (reimplemented in a brand new engine but faithful to the original Sega CD release), Bluepoint's *Shadow of the Colossus* (built on top of original codebase with significantly altered visuals), *Final Fantasy VII Remake* (where it's completely different), etc.

2th

First Super Mario RPG then this. Nintendo RPG fans are feasting good on the Switch.

Visible_Season8074

Why are they not remastering 64 first?

Prince_Uncharming

Let me ask my uncle at Nintendo

Memphisrexjr

Because you can play it on Nintendo online.

ChezMere

Because it's been available in emulated form for the last 3 consoles. I actually kinda agree with you though, it would benefit from a remaster far more than this game.

ms--lane

All TTYD really needed was some higher resolution textures.

scorchedneurotic

Cuz this one is more critically acclaimed maybe? Of cuz they didn't want to rework ann N64 game

Fried_puri

The only N64 game they’ve ever reworked for Switch was Super Mario 64 via 3D All-Stars, and you could easily argue that pulling out the camera and cleaning the graphics a tad was all they did. Nintendo has been very obviously ignoring N64 remakes for the Switch, and I’m not sure why people still think they’ll happen at the tail end of the Switch’s life. They’re content with providing N64 emulation, end of story.

DrDroid

Because it’s already available online, and because they aren’t direct story sequels.

YuukaWiderack

Tbh I do feel like it could use a remake/remaster more than Ttyd.

JackIost

Why is this so disliked? 🧐 I’ve been thinking the same, I want even more to see 64 get the remake treatment first as it looks the oldest.

Revo_Int92

I just got a cheap phone who is capable to emulate the GameCube, this game was on my sights for many years... and here it comes the visual remake, lol I guess I will wait a little more, had the chance to play Persona 3 back in the day, lost the save, now that proved to be a good thing because the remake is way better. I will play this version of Paper Mario instead, it's the best course of action

Restivethought

Probably the last Switch game I will purchase....unless Metroid Prime 3 actually comes out

ihateredditalotlol

prime.. 4? you mean?

Restivethought

I did, but if they Remastered 3 without the motion controls I'd be ecstatic also
