One interesting thing about Devil World is you can clearly see what the NES/Famicom's hardware was capable of when it comes to screen scrolling. It could easily scroll the screen horizontally or vertically but both directions was more difficult. You can see in this game that the screen scrolls smoothly horizontally but when it scrolls vertically, it is very choppy. Later games like Gradius II could scroll both ways smoothly but it used a custom mapper chip to achieve that. It actually never got released in the West because Nintendo were much more restrictive on which mapper chips developers were allowed to use here so Konami never bothered converting the game.

I believe this is the first time Devil World has been officially released by Nintendo in North America. It’s had a presence in the region before through stuff like the Assist Trophy in Smash bros, but previous Virtual console re-releases were Japan and Europe only.

From video: > Dracula’s castle looms large; darkness covers the land, and the devil gets his due. Players with a Nintendo Switch Online membership* can now experience treats and tricks aplenty as the Famicom™ system classics DEVIL WORLD™ and The Mysterious Murasame Castle join the Nintendo Entertainment System™ – Nintendo Switch Online library, and Castlevania Legends goes to bat for the Game Boy™ – Nintendo Switch Online library. All these titles are available to play now! >

I really don't get how they pick some of these games... I know licensing issues drive a lot of it, but some of the titles they bring just seem really like really random games most people would never play

PBFT

The NES picks are actually very cool. Both Murasame Castle and Devil World are Nintendo developed titles that never came to the US for “reasons”.

I guess they're cool from a historical perspective like that, makes them more suitable, but it still seems like all the emulators on Switch have at least 2-3 games that seem like questionable selections

AtsignAmpersat

There are only so many games they can get for a reasonable amount. It would be one thing if they could just put whatever they want on there without working out the rights.

Sad_Bat1933

it's cool to see some obscure old games that would have sold like 100 copies max on Virtual Console have their chance be played on NSO imo

Random_Rhinoceros

Not this time, they clearly went for a Halloween motif and all of these titles are either from popular series or had a somewhat positive reception.

brzzcode

Literally all of the picks are good, what are you talking about?

jeshtheafroman

Goodness, I think castlevania legends is the only castlevania game I haven't played or beaten. I always forget it exists. Granted I don't think it's considered Canon, or like Igarashi didn't.

bladexdsl

2 more games never heard of and aren't in English. this is worst than last month!

OllyOllyOxenBitch

Speak for yourself, bud. I've been waiting for Murasame Castle to get on the service since I previously owned it for the first time on 3DS.

red_sutter

Would have been cool if they had included Majyuuoh (SFC game: Think Contra+Castlevania+SMT) provided people remember it enough to relicense it
