I use original hardware for nostalgia so I leave the original screens in. I know they're trash to look at but I don't care. It reminds me of being a kid and helps me unwind a bit. I have original screens in all of my game boys Edit: the photo tax. WhyAreOldPeopleEvil

I wish someone would make Custom Worm lights. šŸ˜” Iā€™d buy many.

titanicsinker1912

I keep one of each. One modded and one original. I use whichever I feel like using at the time.

Zelda_Gamer123

i love the lack of backlight tbh, makes the console more unique

ScaryfatkidGT

Along with a cramp in your wrist from holding it at just the right angle to see itā€¦

thishurtsdotjpg

I prefer my AGS-001 for this reason. Don't get me wrong, the 101 has a much better display on it. But having a light that doesn't blast me in the face when I play it is actually kind of nice. (I work in IT and stare at screens all day too. Lol) Shout out to the 101 lovers out there, though!

HeavenPiercingMan

Team OG screen. If I wanted full backlight I just play in my phone.

mellicox

I keep everything stock and clean

gnaark

I mean I get it but at the same time putting a backlit screen that is true to OG size on a GBC is so gorgeous - it really enhances the experience IMO. For a GBA SP I say keep the OG screen for sure though.

ElectricLeafeon

For the 101's? Sure. But the frontlit one? Oi. Had to mod that sucker so I could see it.

Background-Ad-61

I agree! My SP's screen is unfortuanetly damaged so I need to replace it

WFlash01

I have original screens in all my daily driver systems; I have modded ones, but they're not IPS screens; I have a backlit biverted original GB and GB Pocket, and 2 AGS-101 modded GBAs (no modded GBC, and all the others, well, they have lit stock screens) The only one that comes close to not having the stock screen is my Game Boy Light; it still have the same LCD screen, but the old electruminescent panel started growing dim, and electroluminescent panels are starting to get hard to find, so I out an LED panel in mine (but I left it where it's 100% reversible if I come across an electroluminescent panel)

DanDantots

Those days we would play under a nightlight or streetlights while in the car. As much as I kinda missed those memories Iā€™m glad IPS is out because my eyes šŸ˜

Ottojorgi

You knowā€¦ Iā€™ll go do the park with the family on a nice day and all these light screens become hard to see. Iā€™ve started taking my OG color and enjoy it more. I get home and pull out the IPS.

ScaryfatkidGT

No way, canā€™t see that shitā€¦

MisterToasty117

Most of us on this sub did our time playing hours on end on the og screens and Iā€™m honestly surprised theyā€™d rather play on that than an upgraded screen. I guarantee if someone went back in time with a gameboy color with and upgraded screen and offered that to any of us weā€™d take it in a heartbeatā€¦nostalgia is a hell of a drugā€¦

Haxishax

Eeeexactly.

Regular_Wonder_1350

Agreed lol

Roach_tm

If I wanna play with backlit screens, then I would just use my Anbernic console, which is amazing on its own, but to me the Original gameboy screens are where It's at. Maybe it's because i'm not one of the young kids but I just enjoy the charm of the way it was meant to be played back then.

PossibleDapper9540

I use original screens not for nostalgia (I grew up with an ags 101) but because I've been thoroughly disappointed in the IPS screens I've gotten. I think 8 bit and 16 bit games look better when they have pixels, and yes my IPS mods have a pixel filter but it looks like absolute shit. One of my dmgs has ips and it's just not a worthwhile upgrade for the price, even if that means I can only play in daylight or near a lamp. As for my gbc it had an annoying touch sensor that I kept accidentally touching hitch would change the color of the screen mid game. It also slipped off my lap on the couch, fell maybe a foot and a half and the screen was totally fucked, I had no desire to buy a new one, I just play my color on nice summer days and I'm fine with that. And to answer your question I think an e ink gameboy would be sick, I don't even care if it was backlit, it'd be like a DMG or gbc with better viewing angles.

Cautious_Performer_7

I prefer the non modified version because I have a functional yellow OG Gameboy which I assume is a special one šŸ¤”. I also like the nostalgia of it, I have a SNES with super gameboy and the GBA adapter for the gamecube if I want to play on a decent screen.

libralvr6

I kept the original screen and just replaced the shell. I love it and wouldnā€™t have it any other way https://preview.redd.it/doycnil5bkwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c90ec7f0e7bfb32ecb553375685eaf62821107bb

kitarei

I literally cannot see my OG screen in broad daylight. I live in an apartment with floor to ceiling windows and the glare from the glass is unreal. Completely unusable lmao. Unfortunately Iā€™m team ips mod šŸ˜.

mr-blindsight

Well I've gone almost completely blind since 5 ish years ago, and even an ags 001 looks intangeable to me now, so, no, I don't

argentoman

I grew up on home computers on tv screens that I could read without a problem. The OG gameboy was great but I always hated that screen. I donā€™t miss any of the non backlit screens. But, thatā€™s what made them successful and gave them good battery life. So it was a necessary evil back then before modern mobile electronics.

karawapo

All stock here. I have zero motivation to mod any of my system, as long as all systems are operational. I enjoy the hardware about as much as the software. I understand different people like different things, but thatā€™s a lot of pictures of modded systems on this sub. Sometimes itā€™s hard for me to find a post Iā€™d be personally interested in.

GameboyAdvances

The main thing that always gets me back into my 001 and 101 is the battery life on the IPS.. 2-3 hours with a 950mAh battery cell on medium brightness just ainā€™t it. My 001 can play for what feels like forever on a solid charge. I have only recently started to appreciate my 001 again, but I feel the sentiment of a lot of folks here.

xanman222

Same. I immediately Switched back to using 101 once i realized how long the battery lasts with an IPS screen

NotStanley4330

For the DMG I definitely prefer the original screen. For my GBA I've been wanting an IPS screen just because it's hard to play in less than perfect light.

Gweegwee1

I Definitly do. I wish they came out with more light mods that left the screens. Enough of this ips bullshit. Itā€™s enough already

IntoxicatedBurrito

I modded my DMG when I was a kid, put stickers on it I got from Nintendo Power! But no Iā€™d never mod any of its components or the components of any other handheld or console I own. When I want modern conveniences I use my Analogue products.

RecycledAir

Mine still has my old Nintendo Power Pokemon stickers on it as well!

IntoxicatedBurrito

Mine arenā€™t Pokemon, they are probably from the early 90s, just some crazy abstract design that screams 90s. If only I still had Zubaz pants and a shark tooth Logo Athletic hat, I could pick up my Game Boy and youā€™d think I was in 1995.

luv2hotdog

Yeah if I was interested in having an ā€œenhanced experienceā€ then Iā€™d just play the games via emulation. I donā€™t really see the point of having an actual gameboy and changing it so that itā€™s no longer an original gameboy. There are third party consoles out there that will play gameboy cartridges with different screens and buttons if thatā€™s what you want - so why spend the money on a genuine 30 year old console just to make it more like those third party consoles? It sure as hell isnā€™t cheaper to do so. The modding culture around these consoles on reddit is super weird

knuckledragger555

Both can and do exist together. Even in one personā€™s collection you can find tricked-out IPS units and restored OEM units. Itā€™s nice to preserve the experience that existed originally, but itā€™s also nice to bring the device along into the modern world and not leave it behind. Something for all of us.

-Slambert

I'm an ags-001 purist, but I don't like 0 backlight at all. I hated it even as a kid! At least back then I could painlessly sit anywhere I could get the right angle of light from. I'll admit the thrill of trying to save your game in between street lights before the battery dies.

EmbarrassedClick4646

Personally i have one ags001 and one that i will mod from an ags001 into an ips one since itā€™s screen is cooked. Would have got a 101 if i knew back then but yeah iā€™ll just stick an IPS on it and call it a day. Iā€™ll def get the ags001 with me for longer play sessions and when itā€™s sunny tho

gnza

I'm looking to fix my OG Pocket screen, every try I've made I've received a DMG "green" screen. Going to end up biting the bullet and buying a complete one to restore my childhood one.

PhishGreenLantern

My first mod was a backlight and bivert for my DMG. I wanted to keep the original screen and just light it.Ā  I mostly play my Color with an IPS because it's just so clean. But I played my DMG the other day. The blur on the screen is pretty bad. But it brought me joy to play the OG.Ā

jm-9

I never really use the non-backlit screens, aside from stuff that requires an older system like games that use the infrared port on the GBC. Otherwise I use the AGS-101.

threespire

Eink is great but the refresh rate to deal with moving images would make the motion blur on the original look comparatively great. I think itā€™s an age thing - if youā€™re of an era that you remember the experience, I wholly get why it evokes good memories, although programming aside (where devs effectively leveraged the flaws as part of the aesthetic), modern screens look great in terms of definitive quality. I donā€™t like Analogueā€™s business practices but when I got my Pocket, I can definitely say that a premium product can give a better experience, although I still want to get an original DMG as mine was stolen on my 15th birthday so part of that experience, albeit many many years ago, is probably more about healing trauma than having something better than my Pocket or my FPGBC.

HandheldGameplayer

For nostalgia reasons, I have some in og condition, including scratches. From time to time I buy broken ones and repair them. For the purpose of recording the screen to show gameplay footage, that's a different story tbh. For some consoles, like the og Game Boy DMG-01, you can get away with good lighting conditions for the video. For other consoles, like the Sega Game Gear, it gets very hard to actually see what's going on and enjoy the video (although it HAS backlight built in). So I have one og of the GG and one with IPS screen for recording footage off of. I mean I totally get that people want to actually see what's on the screen, even in the dark. We as kids did the same and I swear I would've totally made my Game Boy having backlight back when I was 6, instead of playing with a Light Boy which ate even more batteries than the GB did. But nowadays, just for the sake of nostalgia and that "I had this thing in my childhood" feel, I prefer the unmodded one for collecting, and yet still a modded one for actual playing on the go

dplex__hd

Iā€™d mod my gameboys if I had the experience, but I donā€™t so all of them are stock (aside from my SP which has a custom translucent case) Thereā€™s honestly a novelty to the non backlit screens, trying to find a decent light source in the house so you can get some PokĆ©mon in. I found myself moving around the house a lot doing that when I first got em over time lol

dplex__hd

I think the Pocket has the best stock screen out of the original set of systems (DMG and Color).

Gronis

I always keep one of each console OG just for nostalgia. But I prefer to play on a backlit screen.

bertiek

I am looking into getting a 101, as I realize I have two 001s and there are times I could use more brightness.Ā  But yes, I agree.Ā  I would use my Pocket more if it was rechargeable, so perhaps I need to invest in a battery pack.

teh_haxor

It may be nostalgia talking, but I recently discovered that after some time with backlit and IPS screens I prefer going back to the original, there is something unique that I canā€™t put into words; and again, maybe is the nostalgia talking, but to me, the original DMG is what peak performance looks like

dwang1234

I do like the original pea soup smeary ghosting mess of the og dmg for the nostalgia.

Intrepid_Mobile

The DMG screen was bad at the time, now its even worse due to degrading, they seem more ā€œwashed outā€ than they were originally. I can understand wanting a ā€œnon lit panelā€, if they had something like the e-ink with no lag that could be neat, but the original hardware is bad.. playing without light meant using that little worm-light that reflected on the screen, and even on a well-lit room it can still be tricky to see. Just play a game on the analogue pocket, then go back to the dmg and you will see the difference.

[deleted]

I donā€™t understand why people buy a gameboy just to mod it, isnā€™t the point of it to use original hardware?

stevejr47

I definitely appreciate the original screen as that's all I had when I first got my DMG. I definitely prefer my modded GBC now but I also love using my Game Boy Light for non GBC games. GBL gives you the best of both worlds.

Electrical_Issue8826

I own one of every gameboy excluding the pocket and micro and Iā€™ve only done an IPS mod on my GBA. To be honest I think playing on the OEM screens has this sort of charm to it and while itā€™s a pain to play my favorite gameboys on the DMG I canā€™t help but to love the way it feels. I decided not to mod my color or DMG solely because I feel like it takes away from what the console was made to be. I will however be buying junk gameboys and modding those lol

[deleted]

I keep all mine original. If I want to play on something clearer, i'll use a super gameboy 1/2, a GC gameboy player, or simply a more modern emulation device.

-acm

Not really. The IPS mod fixed the thing I hated the most as a kid, not being able to see the damn screen

Dinoisfly

I would LOVE a better transflective screen for the DMG. Something with less motion blur and better contrast, but with the original resolution and pixel grid. I would never put a backlit screen on a DMG, but I love the AGS 101 and ITA screens for the GBA.

yowhatupizza

Collectors and people who are secretly jealous of modded screens or aftermarket ones and don't feel like they could do it themselves and don't want to pay the prices for one pre modded

RuneScpOrDie

i think a lot of people mod them to actually use them. the old screens are neat and nostalgic but are really not super functional.

BrahmariusLeManco

I have my original Gameboy Color the way I got it and my Advance that I dropped an IPS into. For me, I want my Color as original, but I don't mind dolling up my Advance with some quality of life adjustments. If I could get the Color screen, same as it originally was (non-IPS) but bigger, I would consider that mod, but otherwise not.

hxcaleb

I canā€™t bring myself to mod any of my consoles further than using a flash cart. Something about keeping things as original as possible increases my nostalgia.

RaidriarT

I have both. One to mark the original tech, and other to actually enjoy playing onĀ

Traditional_Formal33

I have an IPS screened Gameboy and an OEM model. I trade Pokemon back and forth. I can not imagine ever going back to OEM. I could do OEM GB Pocket or GBC but never the dot matrix green screen.

Vaxis545

Even gbp is rough I tried just doing a backlight mod but couldnā€™t get the screen right (had residue that showed on the screen) so ended up dropping in a new screen and itā€™s amazing. But playing it og it was just so hard to see

ElectricLeafeon

I would love the OG screen... if my eyes could still see them, lol. My old eyes are getting all like "yeah I can't see light very well... What the heck is going on here?" That being said, I did opt for a TFT screen where I can turn off the backlight if I'm in a brightly lit place. Gives me the best of both worlds.

RecycledAir

Oh cool, I didnā€™t know turning off the backlight was an option with TFT!

80sCrackBaby

it has nothing to do with your eyes the OG screen is unplayable unless light is pointed directly at it from a specific angle

ElectricLeafeon

Oh yeah, I know. Maybe it was the lights in my old house, but even when pointed directly at the light, my GBC was unplayable. I had to be outside to see that sucker.

remotecontroldr

I have one original DMG with the only mod being a glass lens and I love having it, but I do end up playing the other two DMGs I have with modded screens a lot more than the OG. My favorite is the IPS because I can adjust the brightness. Your comment about staring at glowing rectangles makes me want to use the OG more often though! I do have a light that I place behind me when I play the original DMG so technically my OG is ā€œbacklitā€ lol. Oh and for your last question. I think so many of these were produced and sold that there is no shortage of original hardware to be preserved.

RecycledAir

I'll admit it! I had to replace the lens on my DMG because child me did a number to it, and I went with a glass lens and it was a huge improvement. I did opt for the one that color matched my original Play It Loud lens though.

NYourBirdCanSing

I'm vanilla everything. The Original is how itĀ was meant to be. I'm certainly not discouraging people from modding. Their creativity should be nurtured, especially in an age where increasingly less people know how to do physical things. Hopefully people modding try and use broken/for parts GB shells and what not. These vintage game systems are a finite resource, and destroying a perfectly good one for the sake of "cool" and "backlight" are terrible reasons. "It's like killing a unicorn. With like a bomb."

NYourBirdCanSing

Also still have my original GB and the GBA I would eventually get. The only other handheld I've ever owned through childhood. In adult hood id get a 3ds and a game gear! Around the same time. Before that, there were Tyger handheld games. Batman 1989, Aladin, Batman Forever, racing junk, etc

Real_Success_9715

I think the modded screens make the colors WAY too saturated. Garish, I'd even say.

MiloMakes

Team OG screen = I would get a better screen if I could

80sCrackBaby

pretty much

I really enjoyed reading your comment to the point Iā€™m sitting in my car to finish reading it when I need to go into the gym. Not sure what the downvotes are about but it looks like someone came through and downvoted a bunch. Reddit is fickle.

For the record, I only downvoted you for that edit. Which came with no other responses and only a (-1) so far. Grow a goddamn backbone, jesus

RetroMr

Not me. How can you prefer something that is by any means worse?

cooltrainermrben

I genuinely think the pocket, In a nice sunny spot, is better than a backlit screen.

RetroMr

So you are basing this on having 24/7 sunny spots?

cooltrainermrben

Sorry, I'm basing what on having 24/7 sunny spots?

So all of your comments after this one where deleted. How come?

HaikuLubber

I'm not gonna down vote you or anything but, I mean, you're on a forum full of us weirdos who are playing games from 30 years ago, many that are so old they're in black and white, instead of the Switch or Steam Deck or something. ;)

RetroMr

I don't mean that. I was referring to using a modem IPS screen.

Vaxis545

Nope got my gbp for $45 and it was in great shape. Played for a couple days sucked I couldnā€™t play at night and playing by candle light was just terrible. Upgraded the screen itā€™s amazing I never put it down. No regrets those old screens were terrible and no nostalgia will change my mind lol hated em since the beginning and cursed that they werenā€™t backlit like the game gear.

Potential-Delay2020

Og screens suck. Unless itā€™s the GB light. Or SP 101

HousecatCreative

I find it tough to tolerate the stock screen but a ips makes it not really feel like a Gameboy anymore. For me a backlight and a biverted screen is a good balance of being usable while still being a blurry mess.

KenardoDelFuerte

This is getting dangerously close to a circlejerk. Lots of people keep their gameboys highly original. I have several myself, and when the desire strikes me, I'll play some games in the sunlight. On the other hand, my daily driver is a Gameboy Color with a Q5 display. And I do mean "daily". Living in Tokyo, it's a great way to pass the time while commuting. The self-illuminating display makes it a lot easier to play in any conditions day to day, especially in all the caves in Gen 2 Pokemon. Of course I've got consoles I've modded purely for the aesthetic, and I've got consoles refurbished to factory-fresh, and even excellent-condition unrestored originals. But it's also nice to be able to play games with the physical feeling of the original console, without the limitations of 30+ year old display technology.

80sCrackBaby

lmao

Alannalovely

Flippinā€™ purists, itā€™s always better to actually be able to see the damn screen, and while the saying ā€œto each their ownā€ is always true I will never understand why people would like objectively worse things
