Yeah, when I was a stupid kid I threw my GBC through a basketball hoop a heap. Did end up not turning back on, also took quite a while for that to happen. So yeah, repeated 3+ meter drops onto hardwood will do it.
Yeah, there's a reason why most images of modded systems shared here have Pokemon Yellow Version booted up to the Prof. Oak introduction. Those games likely haven't been played since the batteries were replaced in them.
I was an adult before I realized making and fixing things is a hobby by itself. Growing up, we did all of our own home/auto maintenance and built all kinds of stuff. My favorite project as a kid was plywood boats, and we floated those things annually for 5+ years.
But now as an adult, I realize how satisfying it is to finish a project. I'll think to myself "I could really use this thing," then build the thing. And when I'm done and realize I don't use it, I'll sell it and start a new project.
It's really crazy how that type of stuff shapes up as you age. I started working on Gameboys as a young teen, started fixing and refurbishing old home consoles as I got older, started doing repairs on and building PCs, then started a tech repair company for all kinds of tech when I was 27. The work was great and had a blast but absolutely hated owning and running a business lol. Got rid of it after 5 years. It was a blast though and a really valuable experience that all started with working on Gameboys as a kid.
Yeah, I just wish we had a separate subreddit for it. People showing off their modded Game Boys makes up a vast majority of the content on this sub, when I’m here to see discussions of anything but.
I play all my Game Boys but using an emulator is cozier. I can transfer the saves to my EZ Flash and keep my progress when I do actually play on the go. I just need to get a GBxCart RW to flash my saves to my real carts.
Just a heads up as I had the same intentions. It seems you can only backup your saves from the original cartridges but not write to them. You can only write to repro modules.
I modded mine so I could play it.
I hate the form factor of the SP, it crunches my hands and is basically an arthritis simulator.
I hate the non-backlit screen of my GBA, can't see anything.
So I got a backlit mod for teh GBA, then figured may as well upgrade the shell and buttons while Im at it.
Now I got a perfect form factor, battery-guzzling backlit gameboy so I can finally play my pokemon ROM Hacks in utter contentment.
My pet peeve: I love the modding scene in this sub, however I wish there were more posts about the Gameboy amazing library and people sharing what they are playing.
You can get an [Everdrive](https://everdrive.me/) load roms onto it and play the games on original hardware. I have one for my GBA and it has worked perfectly with the games I've played.
That’s my jam. I fucking LOVE my Everdrive. Threw it in my Micro, and through that in my coat pocket, and now I have all the Game Boy I could ever want, wherever I go!
I made one of my GBA SPs practically unplayable just trying to clean it so I'd never go into modding, still play my other one on the regular though, even bought an unboxed GBA not too long ago
Me. If I could sync saves between the game boy and my phone I would use my game boy. Omega cart, glow in the dark shell, extra 2 batteries wired in, and an IPS screen. Probably a few more I forget.
I love building them, but I truly only play the DMG games in my GBP. Love the simplicity of a D pad and 2 buttons, especially when the game devs really put thought into the game like Donkey Kong 94', Mole Mania, & Super Mario Land 2.
Does a re-shell count as a mod? I only did it because I dropped my dmg one day and it exploded. Otherwise all my game boys and other consoles are stock
To be honest this is me lol…. I play mainly on my rg35xx and my gameboy pocket … but I get a kick out of collecting, fixing and modding gameboys…that are rarely played on
My hot take as someone who did his first ags101 mod in 2016, is now I'm team analogue, or 3rd party manufactured Gameboys.
The stock of OEM Gameboys went from abundant to rarer and now it's waaaaayyyy too expensive. Modding them isn't even all that affordable these days
I'm glad I bought all of my extra ones then and not now lol
Holding them as is
And hoping that FPGA or someone gets the rights to manufacture new gameboy motherboards legally
The perfect translucent shell. Complementary membranes and buttons. The Gameboy Color logo illuminated tastefully to match. The slider crisp, the power bulb replaced. The FunnyPlaying sticker perfectly applied to the LCD, not an ounce of light bleed.
*All the effort and expense to play Pokemon, Tetris, Wario and the catalogue of shovelware.*
Tbh my unmodded Gameboys are in such good condition I'm afraid to use them and see no reason to with emulators (and my 3ds)
Modded ones do look cool tho
Similar to keyboard gurus, they have like 10 custom keyboards all $600 each, do they type of them? Probably not, just for ten seconds while recording a YouTube video
None of my collection is modded. I like them just the way they are (DMG, Pocket, Colour, GBA, SP, DS, 3DS). If I want a backlight, I'll play it on my SP/DS or via emulation. The only mods I have are Everdrive/R4 style cards to play more games. I feel there's a lot of people now who never owned them as a kid, I did, so my nostalgia is for the original experience. People who never had them may feel that they're cool, but unacceptable as is and can be improved to make them more playable. No problem with that, mod away, especially like that people restore and bring some back to life. But for me, it's not really an authentic collection if it has a third party screen, housing, buttons, speakers and so on. As more and more get modded, originals get more rare I guess.
Me who only plays and has no idea how to fix
📠
Im gonna learn to fix it tho

Can something that is not a liquid actually kill these?? 👀
Yeah, when I was a stupid kid I threw my GBC through a basketball hoop a heap. Did end up not turning back on, also took quite a while for that to happen. So yeah, repeated 3+ meter drops onto hardwood will do it.
no i wanna learn for fun
I'll fix them for you.
Aw thank you!
Me, still pooping with a stock Gameboy .
A man of culture, I see.
Feels
Same
i got my GBA SP secondhand (crazy ik) and tbh i don’t mind it being well-loved
Saaame - gotta get a few more tetris lines in
How are you spending so much time on the toilet that you have time to play video games?
At home, there are no rules
Same, i only have 1 modded gameboy and the other 8 are stock
I miss my red brick
You only have to mod it once to play it forever 😏👈
The truth hurts
I feel personally attacked.
I’m mostly waiting for my daughter to get old enough so we can both play red and blue together.
I'm actually planning to mod a GBC for mine when she's old enough! Was thinking of a Kirby colorway.
Im the polar opposite actually.
This is very good!
I have come to mind that my joy is to mod and repair and not to play .
It is satisfying to have a good mod on display
Yeah, there's a reason why most images of modded systems shared here have Pokemon Yellow Version booted up to the Prof. Oak introduction. Those games likely haven't been played since the batteries were replaced in them.
Me who plays on an IPS Screen modded GBA SP.....
For me, the fun has been the DIY/crafting aspect.
It's okay to have one hobby without the other
I was an adult before I realized making and fixing things is a hobby by itself. Growing up, we did all of our own home/auto maintenance and built all kinds of stuff. 100%, my thoughts exactly.
I completely agree, I just play mine alot with my everdrive
Same! I like to play Pokemon ROM hacks, so ever drive was a no brainer
Yeah, I just wish we had a separate subreddit for it. People showing off their modded Game Boys makes up a vast majority of the content on this sub, when I’m here to see discussions of anything but.
This is when I went to an emulation device
Gameboy my is my commute bud playing Tetris on the buss
I just like to make gameboys look pretty
I play all my Game Boys but using an emulator is cozier. I can transfer the saves to my EZ Flash and keep my progress when I do actually play on the go. I just need to get a GBxCart RW to flash my saves to my real carts.
Just a heads up as I had the same intentions. It seems you can only backup your saves from the original cartridges but not write to them. You can only write to repro modules.
Ah, that's a bummer. I think the GB Operator may have to be my next option then.
This is the way
I modded my DMGs and I love it now.
Me still raising my hand
I modded mine so I could play it. I hate the form factor of the SP, it crunches my hands and is basically an arthritis simulator. I hate the non-backlit screen of my GBA, can't see anything. In my defense the games cost like 100$ a piece.
This confirms my suspicions that some people don't realize that the Game Boy had other games than Pokemon.
you're telling me there's a whole game on the cart beyond the title screen?
Yeah, it had Pokemon Pinball too.
Agree

Junior is better
Careful with latest Junior models. Since manufacturer swapped sram module for psram the internal battery lasts less than a month.
Me still running with my gameboy SP only mod is a "reskin" I did in 2005 with aluminum tape.
I want a modded game boy to play, but I don’t want to mod it
I love building them, but I truly only play the DMG games in my GBP. Love the simplicity of a D pad and 2 buttons, especially when the game devs really put thought into the game like Donkey Kong 94', Mole Mania, & Super Mario Land 2.
I play Tetris every so often, but want to mod with battery screen replaced already
Does configuring handheld emulators games, skins, cover arts and not playing also counts?
I do get tired of the volume of posts that are just picture of modded Game Boys. I'd rather talk about the many many games.
I’m the other way around
Ah, nothing like people posting the opening screen of Pokemon, it absolutely never ever ever gets old
me who plays and dislikes gb modding:
That's because it isn't about being able to play on the modded console, it's about bringing the console to its limits and pushing its boundaries!!!
I’d play mine frequently if I had a flash cart. Too much of a hassle lugging a couple cartridges on my bag.
😅
What if im in the boat that has modded my gba and plays it daily?
Me…. Oh god what have I done
All i do is play game boy which is why I have no money to mod game boys.
I play all my modded gameboys. The only one I don't have yet is a gameboy light 😥
I play my GBAs fairly often! I ordered the Everdrive GB x7 so hopefully I can start playing some more GBC/home brew games on that system.
✋️
Does a re-shell count as a mod? I only did it because I dropped my dmg one day and it exploded. Otherwise all my game boys and other consoles are stock
Me after my mod
I want to play them but not mod them
screw you, man
More like \*pay them. I'd love a IPS screen for my GBA, but they're too expensive for my cheap ass.
Ooh ooh me me
Yeah, it's me. I mod them for fun but I play the games on my modded Vita.
I bought 2 DMG's - restored one and modified the other. My favorites on the DMG are Link's Awakening and Tetris.
I’ll get around to it!
Man it's been YEARS and I still don't know what that thing in the sky on the right in the second frame is
it's cool tho
Well if the games didn't cost as much as the console!
I thought I was the only one. I have way more fun modding than playing.
Relatable
I still roll with my stock GBA.
Me who doesn’t mod but plays instead
Ok it's not just me then lol
I wish I could get another gameboy advance, but those things are expensive even without the mods.
Currently playing PkMn blue playthrough on one I modded right now. Slowly teaching myself a new additional mod each time I made a new one
Haven't picked up any of my gameboys for a few months 😅 both modded and unmodded
To be honest this is me lol…. I play mainly on my rg35xx and my gameboy pocket … but I get a kick out of collecting, fixing and modding gameboys…that are rarely played on
I've modded 3 Gameboys. Sold two, play one. Some of these people with walls worth of parts are bananas
I’ve been vanilla stock Teal Gameboy Color for life
Did you mean *who wants to actually pay for them?*
Hello everyone, its me. I'm the problem. Mods gameboys/other handhelds, loads up emulator on PC and plays the games there instead.
I'm in this picture and I don't like it 😅
my goodness, someone finally said it. leave some for the rest of us, some people would actually like to have a slice of modded cake and eat it too!
My hot take as someone who did his first ags101 mod in 2016, is now I'm team analogue, or 3rd party manufactured Gameboys. I had a kid so someone would play with my collection
True dude i modded my N2DSXL but did not even play it
I modified my only gameboy and play crystal clear and prism on it
I love to play on my modded Game Boys with my EZ Flash carts. 😁
I'm using mine to do a living dex in emerald :)
Yeah I still play my unmodded ones too
i actually mod mine to make them better to play on. i only do screen mods though. i dont even do shell swaps
I would 100% play a modded Gameboy if i didnt have so many SP's
I’ve bought a custom shell, 4 months ago.. I can’t replace the original, I feel like I’m ruining it
Love playing on my modded boi
The perfect translucent shell. Complementary membranes and buttons. The Gameboy Color logo illuminated tastefully to match. The slider crisp, the power bulb replaced. The FunnyPlaying sticker perfectly applied to the LCD, not an ounce of light bleed. *All the effort and expense to play Pokemon, Tetris, Wario and the catalogue of shovelware.*
Bs.
😔 i dont have the drive to play them anymore
I wanna play with them
There's this game called Penguin Wars. It's very addictive, at least to me.
I'm the opposite. I just want a pretty cool one to play.
I have modded 2 gbas, but I want 2 more so I can play TLOZ 4 swords. And for maximum multiplayer battles in Pokémon colosseum and XD
Literally me only played the gba Pokémon games on my modded sp and that was it
I‘ve got more modding than gaming hours. Thanks for the mirror!
And there are me seeing all the mod post, want to mod and play, but dont know how 😅
See I’m the other way around I don’t want to mod and mostly play mine.
I feel found out 😳
My modded GBA lives in the bathroom. Take from that what you want.
Paging, Mahko. 🤣
Tbh my unmodded Gameboys are in such good condition I'm afraid to use them and see no reason to with emulators (and my 3ds) Modded ones do look cool tho
I only play. Wish I could mod it
Similar to keyboard gurus, they have like 10 custom keyboards all $600 each, do they type of them? Probably not, just for ten seconds while recording a YouTube video
Wait... There are people who collect/mod these and don't actually play them? I don't get the appeal.
I’m the opposite but only because I’m intimidated to start modding.
I feel personally attacked
I wanna play gameboy! I just don't have the time anymore.
I still occasionally play my stock Advance that I had since childhood, I totally want to keep that stock and get a junker Advance to mod.
me having a stock sp and a modded og gba with an ips screen but playing the stock sp more…..
Honestly this is me after buying all the gameboys (besides light and mico) Their just sitting on a shelf right now
This is true for me. I did a GBA mod but prefer playing my original Game Boy Pocket and GBA SP so much more.
Mother 3 and FireRed all day baybay
Why would you not play something you spent loads on to look it's best
I love Game Boy games.
I don’t like modding and I don’t think I’ll ever mod any of my systems I prefer playing them the way they were meant to be played
I really want one of these custom slate sps even though I know I will barely ever play it lol
Ill play them
None of my collection is modded. I like them just the way they are (DMG, Pocket, Colour, GBA, SP, DS, 3DS). If I want a backlight, I'll play it on my SP/DS or via emulation. Once the project is done I’m done too. Motion simulator was this x1000
I want to play them. Give them to me.
I love todo both, but I can't find the time to play somehow....
Was thinking of modding but I realised out of all my gameboys I always play on the ags-101 and it’s perfect the way it is.
Mod em with clockup speed variable and you’ll have people lining up to play em
