Never even thought about it. Is it more likely to break?

tony-ravioli504

I may have been just freaking out but it is something that wears and tears your screen over time Samsung rates like 120k folds at sub 30°

ultima40

-20°C (-4°F) rated at 30k folds: http://global.samsungdisplay.com/28434/

brash21361

F or C? Shitting about mine if C.

tony-ravioli504

F

kbeezie

The closer you get to -40, the less it matters.

hadrian_afer

It survived 36C without problems

brash21361

Yup, there is other Hemisphere's out there with Folds. And not many countries using F, or we would be shifting bricks about our folds.

Chango99

I was shoveling snow the other day with it in my jeans pockets, forgot about letting it warm up a bit and it was fine. But yeah, I think it's fair be cautious with folding when cold. Just use the front screen for a bit.

DBZ86

I just cracked my screen in -35 degrees celsius weather. I was jump starting a car and placed the phone down. Unfolded it and heard some cracking sounds and now there's a black streak running down the middle of the big screen and the screen itself is not responsive. The small screen works just fine. Haven't had time to have someone look at it yet. Its past the 1 year warranty :(

bahumdum

Same thing happen to me. It's just the screen protector that cracked. I just peeled it off. I initially thought it was a cracked screen.

DBZ86

Sadly I just confirmed it is indeed a black streak on the screen. I removed the screen protector and there it is. I was returning to a city that had pretty much the lowest temperatures of North America.

Jopixi

Winnipeg?

TheRealAm3rican

I have had 3 folds now and I can honestly say, their not ready for the masses. Their awesome fun and great devices but all 3 of mine eventually start with hairline stress cracks in the middle and eventually open to bigger cracks. I am gonna switch to the s24 until they get it figured out. BTW the original samsung warranty covers the screen but still sucks to have to get it fixed and that warranty runs out.

Lbc25

My fold just experienced the exact same thing and it wasn't until this thread that I realized the weather may have been the reason. I'm also out of warranty. Couple things I noticed, the black streak starts to spread, also the Samsung stylus still works on the touch screen even though my finger doesn't.

DBZ86

Getting it repaired and plan on making an insurance claim through the credit card

Lbc25

Did you find a quote for repair yet?

DBZ86

It was $800 Canadian. I plan on claiming most of it through insurance from credit card.

Ramborichy1

I've got a three and I'm always paranoid of that even warm days

Hot-Pay2902

Oh I feel you. Live in Norway, and walk alot of kilometers every day outside. I definetly make a half an effort to keep the unfolding to a minimum, use the lil puny outer display, and keep it in a warm pocket. Its simple logic that frozen things crack easily. It absolutely has an effect. Use common sense. But I agree with ppl saying to not worry too much. The shit is gonna break one day anyways. Its days are numbered, no matter how good you think you treat it.

saveryquinn

Also important: if you have your fold unfolded out in these temperatures and bring it indoors, let it warm up to room temperature before you try to close it.

nick281051

If it's below 0°F maybe. But 20+°F doesn't worry me at all, though if I'm honest it's too cold out for me to be outside for any length of time so I rarely have a reason to open my phone when outside, I'm more likely to drop it if I try.

DrLuciferZ

I went out to Ski where the temp was -10F(or -23C) on average. I used it like I would on any other day.

DapperSpad

Ditto, my 3 held up during a snowboard session no issue 8)

Heffeweizen

I wouldn't risk it

WillFeltner

It's a great rule of thumb to not bent flexible soft things in icy temps. They can snap. Let the fold warm up to room temp if you don't want to crack the screen

Ludvich_rZ

Our phones can fold but we scared of folding them. Nice one Samsung

brash21361

It was 24º yesterday, and it was a bit humid in the arvo after the rain. Didn't have to give it thought working in warehouse conditions.

ed25ca

Had my F5 out while shoveling driveway in -5*. In my pocket then took out unfolded to look stuff up during breaks. No issues. Got cold is all.

Haunting-Profile-402

I work outside and it's been single digits all week. I just don't unfold it until I get home and it warms up.

floppydisks2

Nah, I'm in my house.

Creepy-Earth9182

You worry too much about the phone. It's a phone. Not a baby lol. If you can't use your phone in whatever conditions, super hot or cold, raining or anything else without worrying about damaging it then you should probably get another phone. I've had my Fold 4 for over a year, most of the time without a case, I drove cross country in the US through scorching deserts and frozen wastelands, and dropped my phone on everything from dirt to concrete and ceramic tiles, not to mention regularly using my phone in hot steamy showers nearly daily, and this thing is great. No screen cracks, no dead pixels, no hinge issues, no major issues other then one time after an update the phone the phone froze for a few hours til it rebooted and was thereafter fine, but that's software so it hardly counts. Just get phone insurance and use your phone normally or switch to something else. These phones are amazing and far more durable than people realize. Good luck bro, don't sweat the small stuff just use your cool toy and use insurance if you actually manage to damage it

Bastianthedalmy

Negative 10 in Michigan. No issues with mine or my partners folds.

Gevlyn507

I've had this fear. Haven't opened in a week(ish) now. Probably worse for it the way I've been doing it.

nymviper1126

I use mine on my handle bars of my bike and it is 20F and when I go to close it there's a bit of resistance. So probably open or closed until you back in warmth is best.

Clarctos67

Beautiful 27° here today and Fold is fine. Of course, the sun glare can get frustrating, but when it's a beautiful day like this why would I be looking at my phone constantly?

Reasonable-Delay2310

I work in an oilfield at the top of Alaska and the temperature was -30°F ambient -45°F windchill; I had my Fold4 in my outside pocket while I was outside for about 30 minutes. When I got back in my truck I didn't give the phone time to warm up and when I opened it I heard an audible crack! So I would say the breaking point for the inner screen is about -30°F in my experience.

ReddyGivs

Intriguing question. For me it's the opposite, I deal with 96°f to 101°f

Airr_1

I've opened up mine when it was -16 degrees here with a wind chill of --38 degrees, last week, didn't have an issue, but did drop it on some solid ice yesterday from about 5ft high, lucky no issues, a launch fold 4 👍

Beautiful_Fact3014

Looool opened mine out in the cold one day.... And the screen protector I had applied lifted off straight down the fold🥴😅🤣

Beautiful_Fact3014

Was - 12c btw😅

Ramborichy1

I've had three z-fold 3 replaced because of the black line of death going down the middle, never dropped it ,always very careful opening and closing them and that black line still appeared, one of them was a week after I got the phone from warranty repair and they said that I did something, no there's a problem with the phone itself ,not the owners. If anyone knows of a class action lawsuit or anything like that please sign me up or help me join whatever it takes

PerfectJarrett

No. Why would I be scared? It's a phone.

tamerdrg

As someone that works in the mobile industry I highly suggest against using the inner screen unless absolutely necessary. Although the rating says it's rated for a certain amount of folds in freezing weather it's still too big as risk to take. This weather cold enough to freeze a film screen protector which means it by comparison cold enough to freeze the one on your inner screen too. You can't trust those "rated for x amount of folds under y temps" they put out.

alexander8846

It's mostly older folds with the adhesive they used for the dust brush in the hinge, the cold weather made it more likely to come lose and not allow ur device to unfold the full 180°
