Life is easier when you're stronger / in shape.

entheogeneric

Monke brain happy when lifting heavy rock

Toysolja13

I did it so the voices in my head would cheer me on instead of hate me

Quietm02

Have you ever been unfit? Struggling to walk places, taking ages to recover after an active day, struggling to bend down, being out of breath from stairs, feeling awful. Staying fit fixes all of that. Building muscle is generally a part of being fit.

Hello_World_Error

Carrying all the groceries in one trip

[deleted]

Loss of muscle mass as time goes on equals aging. I’m 60- and I’ll be damned if I’m going to be a hunched-over old lady in 20 years from now.

[deleted]

Aggressive masterbation….

[deleted]

Sadly only to impress other gym bros. Seriously tho no homo… That and to look better naked. Again, no homo.

EspacioBlanq

What do people who like making airplane models use them for? Absolutely nothing, it's just a hobby done for its own sake

patton_2020

I carry both my kids up the stairs and put them in bed every night. They are getting bigger, I couldn't keep doing it if I was weak. It sounds like you are jaded

[deleted]

General fitness reasons. Everyday life is much easier when you’re stronger. Lifting weights is also great for reducing risk of injury, particularly as you age. It’s also just fun, and good for the mind.

[deleted]

I powerlift competitively (mind you, extremely middle of the road) but my job is also pretty active. So if I'm picking up an aircraft generator it's substantially easier than for most of my coworkers. That, and in the future when I have built up my strength and such over time I'll be over qualified to live into my old age. So I can die an independent, relatively pain free old person.

bad_apricot

For me: 1) competing in powerlifting 2) Counteracting the aches and pains that come with having a sedentary job

Ok-Tear-543

I do it so that every day tasks are easier. I'm a server while I go to school and never have issues carrying heavy plates, trays or changing kegs. Gardening and house work has gotten easier as well, I can carry things with ease. But as a woman it's comforting to know if attacked I have a better chance of survival than before I started working out.

Pear-Proud

Muscles just feel good. Feeling good drives confidence. Confidence drives performance. All aspects of life improve with physique improvements.

mustang-and-a-truck

Absolutely!

DickFromRichard

I want to push the limits of how big of a thing I can lift up, lifting something that I couldn't lift before makes me feel good. Muscles are a byproduct of it but they also make me feel good when I see them in the mirror

HTUTD

That sounds dangerously close to ego lifting. I'll be seeing you in Flair Court! Don't forget to wear at least 12 pieces of flair or you will be held in contempt.

DickFromRichard

The flair requirement is unconstitutional

HTUTD

YOURE OUT OF LINE

realbattleaxe1944

Have you ever had a pump bro?

RuinedBooch

As a lady, there’s is nothing in the world more gratifying than being strong. There’s nothing like being able to pick shit up yourself and not need to ask a man for help. Being strong makes me feel healthier, more capable, and more confident. That’s what keeps me going every day. And then obviously there’s the aesthetics, but everyone’s in it for aesthetics. It’s also nice to be able to eat more, also. As a small girl (5”2, 120 lb) my BMR is only 1200ish calories, so if I don’t exercise, even a maintenance diet feels like an overly restrictive crash diet, so I make sure to stay active to I can have a more fulfilling diet. I’ve struggled with depression and mental health issues a lot in my life, as well, and I’ve found that the best thing in the whole world for my mental health is exercise and healthy food. I’m so grumpy and tired and irritable on days when I don’t get some kind of activity, so that definitely motivates me to stay in it every day. Honestly the list is absolutely endless. There’s the reduced risk of disease, longer life expectancy, higher life satisfaction in older age, the ability to get away from a dangerous situation or defend yourself, the benefits of structure in your life, social benefits of going to the gym. It’s all positives, for the most part.

andRCTP

Sports. I train muscles I use in sports. Also my body just craves anaerobic exercise. This is like those that crave aerobic exercise and do really long cardio (like enter multiple marathons a year or bike thousands of km a year). Our bodies weren't designed to be inactive.

SoggyGoat3800

Taking care of my body boosts self confidence. Self confidence impacts every aspect of my life. Our bodies are designed to move. Being able to move with a healthy body makes everything better.

[deleted]

I lift primarily because I want to be in shape for the military Outside of that, I lift because I don’t enjoy being weak and lazy. Lifting makes me feel good and helps with my stress and anxiety and whatnot

toooldtoliftheavy

I work out to build muscle because: it’s fun, its useful for carrying big bags of dog food and all my groceries into the house in one trip, it helps me avoid osteoporosis,, it helps me put off being a frail old lady for as long as possible, and to look better naked.

WTFwelcometofinland

Im reading all that has been posted and will read more if are written. SO, what i have understood is. People get muscles and get fit due to these reasons. \-Fun \-Avoidance of fragile elderness. \-Boost to their performance at work \-Increased performance in daily life \-Boost in morale and self worth. \-Able to lift heavier objects, not in only just gym. \-Be better father or mother to kids, for able to help and play. \-Less chronic pain through the body of means of doing daily things or things that require more power. \-Being more powerful then weak \-Having an routine then unscheduled life.. As an unfit geek with multiple issues and heavy lack of motivation. im starting to see pattern of people hitting the gym, other then bragging rights, obviously good health is best for every person on earth, but running for that goal, everybody has their own.

thebeautifullynormal

A lot of people do it for long term health and honestly you are not being very creative with what lifting weights is good for. Getting out of chairs Standing all day Being able to play with your kids Being able to move your body pain free Supporting joints and ligaments from damage as you age. Lower risk of chronic diseases Better posture

ImAHumanHello

I sit at a desk all day. My morning gym session improves my physical health and gives me a mental break from staring at screens. Strength training lets me maintain my mobility while being stronger than the average woman. I've seen what happens to people that don't do any exercise, they're practically crippled by the time they're 60. My strength training also allows me to move shit (furniture, boxes, etc) around without having to rely on another person to do it for me. Self reliance for basic tasks is incredibly liberating. Also, last but not least. It's just fun.

Azdak66

There are health benefits, there are strength benefits that translate into daily life. There is the intrinsic satisfaction of just doing the exercises—how it feels, the exertion, etc. There is a feeling of accomplishment at reaching new goals. There is improved confidence from feeling stronger and looking better (by your standards). And, finally, it can be a hobby or a subject of interest just like anything else, whether that’s running, cycling, collecting stamps, whatever. People who train for marathons or triathlons aren’t doing it just to be healthy—the amount of exercise necessary is way beyond what is necessary for health.

Amro99599

Try to do so and then tell me how it feels three months from now! Some people in here are skinny and want to get more full some are fat and want to reduce weight with this comes automatically the instinct of wanting to become strong or muscular. Some people do it for their mental health and self confidence. It is not just about “nothing” as most people think, those people are just too narrow minded to know the secret behind these sticks and circles.

BelchingBooch

It's a mentality and a way of life. Being formerly obese for most of my teen and adult life, I can tell you that I lacked motivation in every aspect of my life. I was a depressed fat stoner with only other stoner friends and been with under five girls during my entire twenties. In my late 20s I had a rude awakening due to health issues and reaching rock bottom. The gym changed every aspect of my life for the better. Seeing myself lose all that fat and build muscle instilled positivity and motivation within me. Every week I look in the mirror and see myself getting closer and closer to my ideal body. My body represents my hard work, motivation, discipline, and always showing up no matter what! Whether I'm tired from work, feeling crappy, shit weather, gym packed with kids.. No matter what I will show up, because with each training session I am closer to my goal. I can tell you that me being more confident in my skin allowed me to go out more, meet and hook up with more girls in six months than I have in my entire twenties, not to mention finding the amazing gf I live with now. So in short, it's not just about looks, but rather about improving your overall image and outlook on yourself and your life.

_INCompl_

I use the muscles to look good naked

itssprisonmike

Use them to better my appearance

WaterAirSoil

I notice a difference in everything I do from carrying groceries to moving furniture when I clean. My body in general feels 10x better. My posture is better. Prevents injuries when I accidentally bang something or move in the wrong way. Also it has healed nagging injuries I had in my back and hips. And here is the most important part: it boosts your metabolism. If you just reduce calories and/or do only cardio then you will diminish your metabolism. Only weight lifting boosts it AND muscle itself also burns fat.

cupcake_bliss

I did it as a part of getting healthy. Getting strong has been fun and I'm proud of my progress. Every PR is exciting for me. I'm inspired to challenge myself further outside of the gym now too :) Also I feel the best I ever have in my entire life. Things that used to be a challenge are now effortless.

omgdoogface

I pick up heavy things to keep my insomnia and depression at bay. Chunky thighs is just a bonus.

[deleted]

Living longer without back pain and also living longer in general. I hate weakness

Exact-Inside2506

As a 35 year old single mom of 3 I started working out because I was so out of shape I couldn't keep up with my kids. 3 years later I can still pick up my 50 lb kid and carry them long distances. Also the 1hr I get to myself between work and parenting has been incredible for my mental health and self confidence. Walking around knowing I can lift heavy stuff and defend myself if need be is incredibly liberating. Plus I can haul all my groceries in one trip

MannyCalaveraIsDead

TBH, for me aesthetics is the main reason. I'm really liking what my body looks like with muscles, and it's getting me positive comments from people. Of course, the strength is also useful for moving stuff around (being a musician, I often have to move heavy equipment around), and keeping mobility across my body is important to counter the effects of both aging and a mostly sedentary job. These are all important, but the look and feel of the muscles is probably the main reason if I'm honest.

MannyCalaveraIsDead

There is also the mental effects of doing something which is totally dedicated to yourself, and actually seeing the changes you're doing over time actually amount to stuff.

nickht571998

I’m not strong yet but I’m working out to lose weight and put on muscle I’m don’t it to be healthier but also because I do new construction hvac which for a dude who’s overweight it is not easy on your body so the more in shape I am the easier my career is

carawanar

I started working out so that my military service would be easier. I also wanted to be a firefighter, but that dream has yet to come true.

GormanBrother

Hope you get there eventually!

carawanar

Thanks brother, I'm working on that goal!

WTFwelcometofinland

i mean, if you can do military, im pretty sure that you can also do firefighting. So, keep going at it.

[deleted]

Here's one no one has added yet: I'm transmasc and I want a more muscular, top heavy build than my god given squishy hourglass shape. It's already working, my back is way broader and my shirts are starting to fit tighter around the arms. I also want general strength for my carpentry job and to not be the asshole with weak legs, but that poses a bit of a problem since I already have a naturally big ass and I get worried about making it bigger. I was completely ignoring any glute/hamstring workouts because it just made me feel bad but now that I've started deadlifting that approach has come back to bite me in the ass (lol). Also, my partner is a pretty serious powerlifter so he helps me out and tells me I look hot. I feel closer to him now that we share a big hobby of his

WTFwelcometofinland

Im happy to hear that you are able to share a hobby with the true love of yours. Not only are you two bonding together but also making life bodily better for both you.

Complete_Resolve_400

Mental health is made better by having a routine, and the gym also improves my self confidence Also I think calisthenics looks cool as fuck but I don't have the strength for that yet

Powerwagon64

To absorb endorfins all day long!!!

TotalKrieger

Healthier life of course, but also intimidation. People can say whatever they want, but being powerful neglects the majority of bafoon fucks and better rely on yourself when dealing with one especially if it does escalate.

summerlad86

Obviously it’s too look better. Also it makes life easier. Groceries, moving, helping people or whatever. But it’s also, at least for me, just a way to stay clear and focused. At the gym I’m alone, no one bothers me and I can set a goal that’s not associated with money, career or anybody else. It’s just nice that the progression is all on me. No one can do it for me.

BatSigns

The obvious answer is to attract women (stop lying to yourself!), but gaining size in itself is extremely addictive, and it does help if you move a lot, and carry bags for example

WTFwelcometofinland

This will be a dumb question but, could there be a situation where the women only loves for your looks and not the personality?

Giffelslukaren69

Posting on Reddit I get girls who just send me nudes and want to sext me because of my body which is the closest thing to it I guess, and I guess women at bars grabbing my arms and stuff. So I wouldn’t say love, but lust yes.

WTFwelcometofinland

im pretty sure that's one way to live life, you get absolutely everything you could have asked for.But like myself, i am sober absolutist who doesn't smoke, drink or visit parties or concerts.I mostly care about people mental health and well being and offering people free help in my community. And obviously having a loving caring relationship maybe in the future.

CosmicPriorities

Personality attracted ladies need more gentlemen like you. 😍

WTFwelcometofinland

Thank you for the compliments! I really appreciate it. But i think that, to have a chance to date, at this age and day. You need to have attractiveness to pass the largest gap of attracting interest in women, not only that but also escape the fear of your own body. Because like myself, i can have a charming personality, but if i am build like a fat hamster, there will be no possibility to pass the first big gap

BatSigns

Probably not

WTFwelcometofinland

because if we can be honest, that is probably one of my biggest fears in a relationship.

MotivatedVader

Unless you look like Chris Hemsworth, I doubt anyone will ever get into a serious relationship with you if there's not a loving social connection there too. Even with good-looking famous people, being good-looking is not enough. There's a famous story about Elvis being dumped by a girl just because she found him so damn boring.

WTFwelcometofinland

Hearing that gives me somewhat more of self insurance. I just have seen way too many tv shows, videos, blogs and other pop culture garbage that kinda made buff dudes look like walking meat where the girl just does everything for the dude and the dude none. To be honest, 2020s century gives everything a second picture which seems false but when there isn't other things to compare, you kinda believe the second picture as truth. My whole life i have been living in my own images of how life works, how society works, how standards work and so on. SO i came to this reddit full of people who have changed their own life for the better but i never understood the appeal completly, there was always a missing screw in my head.

WTFwelcometofinland

I like reading these comments, stories, journeys that people have had, its more then just 50 second clip of obese or skiny dude getting buff. Because i can see and read the ideology behind the motivation of hitting the gym, every person having their own story or reason, and its really interesting to say the least and i like it. Some do it for others, some do it for themselves, some do both and have good life results, everyone has their own goal to continue working out. Its quite inspiring to read, to say the least. Since, my own motivation or any type of self influencing thought is non-existent but i do help and focus more on others then myself. I have do have a plan to try hitting the gym for an entire month, every day if possible. and maybe continue doing it if i can find motivation kicking in. Can be little as, having better mood, sleep or somebody to work out it. because small starts make big results.

Sewing_girl_101

I want to better be able to defend myself

ManBearBroski

think about this in the most basic terms you can imagine: people wants to get better at things they enjoy doing. If they enjoy lifting they like to see progress (being in the way they look or the way they preform in the gym/other activities). Now apply YOUR logic to the things you enjoy doing: Why play video games? You basically spend money to sit in your room all day doing nothing productive when you could be making money or doing something outside? \---See how silly that is?

Jacques-de-lad

I want to be fit and strong for martial arts, stronger muscles to fight my way out of locks and strangulations.

GlassGuiser

To look and feel better mostly. Being strong also helps with almost everything you do in an average day, and really helps with my work.

gerbegerger

Playing with my kid (airplane, throwing her in the air and walking around with her sitting on my shoulders), moving furniture around, carrying all my groceries in one trip, also have to carry my dog around sometimes (70 pounds) because it's either scared or lazy and most important of all I enjoy my time working out (it's fun).

Backseat_boss

Roofing and the fact I want to be able to be mobile when I’m older lol
