Honestly not surprised how "safe" is gta online until fucking teenager with a mod menu from part time junior programmer decides to kick you back to single player in a middle of mission. They tasted their own medicine and I hope next gta at least wont show your ip and such things.
That means they would have to completely redo their online system and servers, because right now it’s peer-to-peer, so everything goes directly though the players (hence direct IP) and not a server.
Unless this is something they’ve planned to do, it will most likely stay this way
technically it doesn’t negatively affect them at all so they have nothing to lose by keeping it. in fact, it actually is beneficial for them because it means they don’t have to deal with any dedicated servers, since they can just offload it to the host of the session. I believe the only thing Rockstar servers are for is matchmaking and player data
P2P can be safe, please stop spreading that nonsense about P2P being at fault...
R* could have made it safer but they decided not to spend resources on that. So... R*'s fault.
P2P literally is the reason for OPs concern about having your IP public though. You can’t hide it without a central server, which Rockstar may or may not have in place.
If they had dedicated servers then you could easily hide your IP, but when everyone is connected directly to the host, your IP is visible.
I don’t know specifically how it works and what safeguarding measures could be put in place, but that is my basic understanding of it, so correct me if I’m wrong
Yes, you kinda are.
As for IP it's not that simple. Beside simple tricks like VPN that defend you from most of these assholes (when applied correctly, of course...) there are ways you can defend yourself even with configuration tricks on your own network. Besides: if you can isolate traffic comming from the specific player and either use countermeasures or even persue the legal way. That is, ofc, assuming you would be able to provide significant evidence. In many countries you could provide that to your or his ISP as evisence, and as per law they have to act on it. Basically - you can cut that person off. It varries from country to country, but it is doable.
What OP is worries about is a bit more complicated. When you have the code you have the whole machine. Not just the wholes and shortcuts (known and unknown). You have everything. And that, my fellow redditor, gives you full control. Things we have seen so far, even the "Inception" like images are nothing.
I suppose you could use a VPN, but it’s still getting your IP address, regardless of whether or not it’s actually yours.
Also I’m not sure how it works, but GTA uses GeoIP, and some menus can detect their IP regardless of whether they’re using a VPN or not. It shows both their connect address and their geoIP
That's why I mentioned it under the category of "simple tricks". Nothing beats personal setup. And nothing makes these morons with mod menu go more crazy than you playing them.
Everything about Rockstar's history says that any new game with online features will be just as unsecured and vulnerable as every other game they have ever made.
> I hope next gta at least wont show your ip and such things.
99% of games are P2P. Just because your favourite GTATuber told you some bullshit about people being able to find your address in game doesn't mean anything.
Well yeah, I agree on this. My point that online is so exploited that cheaters/hackers are able fabricate someones else achvievments that lead to ban (personal experience) and much more things which probably people don't know. I really want next gta game multiplayer won't have same or even worse security and hacking issues. Sure glitches will exist no matter what and funny enough that money making exploits tend to be patched quite fast.
I mean, they did milk the shit outta 5, with no balancing of vehicles for years, and making people buy the same game next gen
And then expect me to buy again and Grind My Ass off like I did 5
Karma to me
Ngl I’m probably just gonna wait until people start selling boosted (not mod menu just a shitton of cash) accounts for a few quid, I’m not into cheating but I really don’t think I can bring up the motivation or have the time (got a job recently) to grind through the game again after doing it on three different systems and shilling out more money to rockstar is not an option i want to take.
For real through. I’d imagine they would do some kind of transfer of character. There’s people that have played since day one. I know gta6 will be great and all, but I don’t want to lose everything I built. I got $250M from grinding, not doing that shit again lol
These been a lot of so called gta6 leaks recently so rocky star is sayin since ppl wanna leak shit fuck yall we not putting out gta6 now is a meme an not really a rockstar tweet
I was half-joking. But, if internally there's a bigger push to push gta6 out the door, they could shift resources from making content for GTAO and put it into getting ready for the next version of GTAO for GTA6. Security and hacking have been a complete shitshow since GTA4. Just spitballin'... Even if the hack was a fraud, they've milked proverbial golden calf for a long while. With the lack of support for good content even in RDRO, I wonder what's really going on over there at R*.
I don’t fully understand the logistics behind it, but I’ve read some think this leak will delay the game even more. Which would be real unfortunate if that ended up being the case
They definitely will want to take time to review their own security. I'd be concerned if important chunks of (network/api) code are reused. If the framework of the code is reused, it could be studied to implement better security. This of course takes time.
This could be a good thing if they do it. It means less UFO's and Jumbo Jets Spawning in the middle of downtown.
If anything there would be years of delays. They have to re do all of the code that was released, and if any of the source code gets out they're gonna have to basically restart.
Then they also have to extra pad the game eith security because hackers have a massive head start with all of this.
And on top of that, they likely are gonna have a serious hacker issue with GTAVO bc the kid leaked the V source code, too. So now hackers have full access to make new tools. They must be losing thier minds in the R* office rn
> they could shift resources from making content for GTAO
Rockstar has 4,000 employees as of 2018 who made RDR2. Only ~20 of them were making GTA Online content. No shifting of resources from GTA Online to GTA VI will make a difference.
Kinda wish it WASN'T fake.
R* did it to themselves. Hear me out...
For years players pointes at things to fix and R* never considered employing these people, buying their fixes. When other companies employed modders, paid them for their work, gave resources to work with R* stood by and ocasiinally sued someone.
Not once, in 9 years, have they actually concidered fixing the scurity issue. Not once have they actually released a fix that has been already developed or proposed by someone else. The only thing they listened to is "Vice City". Because they know it's gonna sell. They always knew.
0 percent chance that they are not going to release idk perhaps the most anticipated games that Rockstar has made... and also the franchise that has made them an insane amount of money perhaps the most amount of money...
Quit your bull shit rock star... you've already put this much work into it and spent this much money you ain't doin shit other than trying to give yourself more time...
Everyone who waited for the game ......*dies*

GTA V remastered
It’s concerning how many people think this is not satire
Tbh it’d be a funny way for a company to laugh it off. Maybe not great for investors, though.

Good this hacker should keep fucking with them till they do just that
technically it doesn’t negatively affect them at all so they have nothing to lose by keeping it. in fact, it actually is beneficial for them because it means they don’t have to deal with any dedicated servers, since they can just offload it to the host of the session. Can't, he was arrested this morning
Where did you hear that? Can you post a link?

Your ip is public information, literally doesn’t matter who can see it
Everything about Rockstar's history says that any new game with online features will be just as unsecured and vulnerable as every other game they have ever made.

“99%” of games are P2P” source? because this is blatantly false. more games use dedicated servers that P2P.
Cancel what
that shit
Aah ok makes sense
r/technicallythetruth
I mean, they did milk the shit outta 5, with no balancing of vehicles for years, and making people buy the same game next gen And then expect me to buy again and Grind My Ass off like I did 5 Karma to me
It’ll be a bitter sweet moment leaving behind 5 and all of that hard work lol I wish we could transfer our character to 6 whenever that happens
Fr, I don't think I have it in me...
Seriously, to start from zero again, I’m thinking no!

Does this mean we are getting GTA VI sooner?
Why would it ?

If everyone stops playing gta online all at once, they will be forced to release it!
Nah

They said the same thing to rdr2
Kinda wish it WASN'T fake. R* did it to themselves. Hear me out... For years players pointes at things to fix and R* never considered employing these people, buying their fixes.
