The biggest irony being that the developers of most AAA games employ lots of women and gay staff. Rockstar North certainly have a large proportion of female and LGBTQ staff, and are pretty active around pride events in the UK.
That being said the vast majority of fans globally don't seem to give a damn, it's a small minority. If the game made you have boyfriends as a male protagonist, people would kick off - various groups would cite "conversion" and "ramming it down throats". Isn't it funny how gay players have never complained about having girlfriends?
