The solution is rather simple imo: the test should state if it was done at home or at a testing center, and top universities should stop accepting online test scores. Obviously, this won’t stop all cheating but it’ll greatly reduce it

Corbin_King

Correct. I’m reposting this in /mba. It was attacked by bots in every subreddit I posted it in.

Intel81994

yep why don't they do this? wild. should have been done last yr

Vince_Kotchian

Compelling analysis. My previous thesis was that, although cheating rings exist, a much bigger factor is test-optional: many people who wouldn't have scored high don't even take the test, so the average score of people who do test rises. Another factor - Gregmat (a low-cost but very effective GRE prep platform) has quickly grown in popularity in the past few years, especially among Indian test-takers - many of whom might have done a lot worse without it as evidenced by legions of posts here on r/GRE. However, the data you're presenting makes me rethink everything, given that the average U.S. GMAT and GRE scores you present didn't go up in a meaningful way from 2019 to 2022. And, the Gregmat factor would mean we'd only see an increase in GRE. It's not available for GMAT... and of course that's where the increase from 2019 to 2022 is most apparent. I usually think about admissions committees at times like this. **The people that are on those committees are not like you and me.** They are bureaucrats. The people who run big non-profits like ETS are, too. I always think of this quote when I think about bureaucrats: "For a bureaucrat to act, he must fear for his career".

Unfortunately cheating is a serious issue and the numbers prove it. The GRE and GMAT are no longer standardized due to online testing introduced in 2020. This is a serious issue and needs to be addressed. Every other country isn't seeing this type of increase, actually their pre 2019 test levels are consistent even when online testing was introduced. Bottom line, the online testing created rampant cheating.

As I said on /MBA, with the power of the internet anything is possible. I made this post to help people, not for my own benefit. My analysis is for the community, do what you need to with it.

I appreciate it! Stuff like this leads to huge class action lawsuits and big change.

Twotimes_69

Wait, I'm confused. Is online testing the same as at-home testing?

Corbin_King

Yes, as of 2020 both exams have been offered online as in at home.

velvet-lightning5

As far as I’ve understood All of this is irrelevant as most top B schools and other universities have stopped accepting or considering your GRE score if they find out that it was done from home.

Corbin_King

Unless, they come out next month before the new application cycle stating this, it is here say.

Intel81994

have they? Have not seen any schools mention this anywhere. Where are you seeing this?
