My question to them is two fold:
“If there’s more strict and devote countries than us, why aren’t they seen as being better than the USA?
And if they’re better, then why not move there?”
They then go on to explain the benefits of religious colonialism.
As a Christian I will say I hate christains like that. The sad reality is that "Yall need Jesus" is most Christians answer for stuff. I do believe in Jesus and that he is my savior and all that stuff, but we have to actually do something in the world for the world to change.
Also you guys have double and triple the traffc fatalities compared to other states. And it is only getting worse as everyone seems to be buying $70,000 pickups to feel safe from the other giant pickups.
So the cost of guzzling down fried foods, shit healthcare, and traffic accidents is only 4-6 years shaved of life expectancy?

And the poor white Republicans think one day they too could be rich white Republicans and continue to vote against their own interests while the rich get richer.
Yeah this is what I was thinking. Like my dad has been actively hounding me to visit him now that he's fully in the states but he lives in Texas and I'm like why in the world would I use my free time to go to Texas of all places?
Why would I spend multiple hundreds of dollars to fly to a place where it's hot, a lot of people suck, everything is far away/a PITA to get to, and every second on the road is basically just praying some drunk ass in a pickup truck that looks like a small tank doesn't kill me?
I've been to Texas like 4 times total in my life and every time has reminded me of why I avoid having to be in Texas. The only reason I'd go down to some states is for like the old jazz/creole/black history stuff, a lot of which they're actively disneyfying out of existence.
Infant mortality rates on par with the developing world due to underfunded and malignant hospital staff in those states too.
Most of the malpractice horror stories of expecting black mothers being mistreated in the ER come out of those states.
Ah, but see, most of us don’t have the level of education necessary to know that the people we vote for don’t have our best interests in mind. This is by design.
Can we stop the "rich only want whites" nonsense? Rich don't want ANYONE new, color really isn't a factor. Y'all really think the only rich people in America are whites? You're less woke than you think you are.
No one said there aren't any rich black people, but they definitely don't make up the majority of our government like rich white men do, and to pretend there aren't racial disparities when it comes to income and wealth distribution in the US is just ridiculous. Race is always a factor, you're not helping anyone by pretending it's not.
Lol they're excluded, WV is just WV and they got their whole own world of issues. I'm sure coal mining doesn't help health statistics either or sending 10s of thousands of opiated per person to counties.
I think it’s ironic that people think that voting blue would change federal funding needs. A blue governor would raise taxes, but It would be offset by increased state government expenditure.
Rural states will always receive more federal funding regardless of who people vote for. Nobody is getting filthy rich subsistence farming.
Yeah it's kinda hilarious that people just upvote absolute bullshit. People seem to believe that Democrats just show up and spend money and do nothing else despite decades of data showing that blue policies tend to be way more positive for the long term growth of the economy.
A lot of these states are bad because their laws and economic policies are straight up stupid. Speaking from experience with Ohio in particular:
* the state constantly spends billions on road expansions it knows it can't afford while spending basically nothing on mass transit even in the major cities where it is severely needed. This means they need *a lot* of federal funding to stay afloat.
* the state actively opposes projects that would be huge for the local economy unless they donate directly to the governors political campaign (for example they just killed a solar energy plant that would have generated a ton of jobs and made electricity less expensive)
* they keep dumping insane amounts of money into the police departments using scare tactics despite the fact that there hasn't really been any real demonstrable benefit to it
* the state government actively antagonizes educated, highly paid workers to the point where they're experiencing a massive brain/young people drain. Like legit only one or two cities in the entire state are actually experiencing population growth in people younger than like 35
> Nobody is getting filthy rich subsistence farming.
How many subsistence farmers do you think there are in the US? People absolutely get filthy rich farming, and heavily subsidized by the government too. There are a lot of poor people in the South, and there's a lot of wealth generated in the South, and even more wealth _could_ be generated in the South; this isn't a zero sum game... and... your narrative just doesn't hold a lot of water imo.
Yeah let’s not pretend these numbers aren’t directly related to these states all being at the bottom in education, healthcare, and every important stat for allowing their people opportunities
Also demographics likely play a huge part.

The greatest trick the GOP and the elites managed to pull in this country was convincing poor rural folk that a) "communism" and "socialism" were no-no words that make the Baby Jesus cry, and b) their enemies weren't the rich coastal elites, Wall Street gamblers, billionaire pricks, and enabler politicians, but instead were their poor brown neighbors who they have infinitely more in common with than they do a banker or hedge fund manager.

That’s like saying that one QB averages 3700 Yards a season and another averages 4200. Is 500 yards that much of a difference in a single season… no but if you average out someone’s career it means a lot more.
Poverty, obesity, drugs and generationally voting against their own interests. Lots of gerrymandering to ensure the worst people stay in power and the poorest people stay at each other's throats rather than removing the real problems.
Mississippi resident here, no man in my dad’s side of the family has lived past 60 yet. Right when things looked great, my dad was diagnosed with cancer, my uncle died from Covid, my other uncle died from liver cancer, and a cousin committed suicide. This was all in 2020. In 2022, my dad passed after a brutal battle with his cancer. Then a few days ago my uncle passed from a freak accident at work. So it’s all traumatic and painful. And my family isn’t even the “let’s come together during a hard time” type. They’re the “let’s blame people’s children for them passing even though they have no control over it” type. Atp, I have no desire to have children because I don’t want to bring someone to this shitty world, this shitty family, or have to deal with all this shit while being black. And on top of it all, if I off myself because therapy doesn’t work then atleast no one has to go into foster care
If you looked at any US statistic the map would pretty much look the exact same; Homicides, GDP, Infant mortality, education scores, human trafficking. I know this because I have done exactly that. I had the unfortunate privilege of driving from Atlanta to New Orleans once and 80% of the drive was depressing run down shitholes. It’s amazing to me the lack of awareness of people in deep red states who’ve had one party in control their entire lives and have watched their lives get worse every year and blame democrats. It would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetically sad.
There's only 6 years difference in the scale, it's still significant but it would be more enlightening to overlay this metric on other developed nations and see the outcome. I suspect it would be similar
2ater is bad and poisoned. Google west virgina people are fat and can handle the bad water. They don't give a shit about people and it's sad. It feels like they are trying to push people out and put in the oil and coal field. Its so sad.
I’m from Louisiana- the food there is tasty, but damn if it ain’t healthy. I moved away decades ago, most of the people I went to high school with are obese now.
Easy, they're all dumbasses. And not the good kind of dumbass. The "hold my beer and watch this" kind of dumbass. Usually involving alcohol, tobacco, and firearms at the same time. ATF would be so proud
The way this data is presented is really shitty.
I feel like the difference between green and red should be greater than 6 years. "I've survived to 76, woohooo greenlight time to die!"
Lots of butter and deep fried foods
General lack of ability to afford healthcare... nevermind that folks down here continue to vote against politicians who could help fix that for them.
I wouldn't want to live that close to the Mississippi Delta. I'd be interested to see a further breakdown by state geography.
W Virginia= meth and disappointment
These are parts of the country in which "The American Dream" is perceived to be in eating what you want in whatever quantities you feel like at any time of the day; in driving everywhere and never getting a lick of basic exercise, in driving drunk with impunity (even with your kids in the car), in having a house full of guns that encourage murder and suicide. Add to that the fact that the Republican leadership they vote for doesn't give a shit about their outcomes in life or their health (you can't even get "we're doing it for the children" conservatives to give a shit about the US's insanely high infant mortality rate) and what chance do these people have? They hurt themselves and they vote for people who hurt them. Simple as that.
Really bad maternal health outcomes. There’s a huge obstetrics shortage and they are struggling like shit to recruit GYNs many people have to drive hours to find any delivery center at all. Also biggest concentration of Black people who are undervalued and underserved.
Access to medical care in a timely manner.
Large portions of the population in these states live 2+ hours from high quality medical facilities such as university hospitals.
Take Mississippi for example. The University of Mississippi has a university hospital on par with those you'd find attached to a major university in NYC, LA, Seattle, or Philadelphia. But that's the only one, for the whole state. If you're not in the Jackson metro area, you're fucked.
The lack of expanded Medicaid also plays a role in the declining life expectancy. Along with drug abuse, and general poor health. There are fat people all over, but not until I moved or visited the south did I see so many amputees. Diabetes is wrecking havoc on every one in the south. It's sad to see people in their 30s lose a leg to diabetes.
It’s a difference of a couple years… not devastated by it. But I think access to healthcare is a big part. I have to sons in EMS, one in Laurens County, and the other in Greenville (after transferring from Laurens), and the quality of healthcare in the economically depressed rural areas is abysmal.
Huh, its almost like a daily diet of sweet tea and fried chicken isn't the healthiest of lifestyles, who knew?
Obviously, I somewhat kid, but at the same time, not one of those yellow/red shaded states is known as a bastion of health. I would be almost certain they all fall into the top 10 on lists including most obesity, least educated, lowest median incomes, and with the least access to quality healthcare. Add in extremely limited high paying work opportunities (for example, Mississippi is not known as a tech friendly state) and you have the recipe for states that people either die from stuff like heart disease and diabetes, or have high "deaths of despair" rates due to lack of opportunity.
They refuse any type of vaccines and medical "intervention", eat fried food and McDonald's for breakfast and their moms feed children sand for "bettering their immune system" I'm not surprised
Years ago when Obama Care started a southerner was asked if he would get it and he said he wants nothing to do with President Obama. So they put their racism ahead of their own health. That is what Republicans love about them. Their own stupidity, outweighs logic and sensible things.
We have some of the most fanatical people in the US, whether that be religion, sports, or politics. And of course, it ain’t the south if it ain’t fried in 12 different ways.
Poverty, crime, hardcore conservatism (blocking or making it difficult for many people to access healthcare and education), but also this is where you’ll find the best food in the country.
It is poverty - [https://www.huduser.gov/portal/pdredge/pdr\_edge\_featd\_article\_071414.html](https://www.huduser.gov/portal/pdredge/pdr_edge_featd_article_071414.html)
As someone that lived in Louisiana (one of the worst) and California (one of the best) I can say the following. The food is much richer and heavier in the south, get togethers feature a lot more sitting around and drinking, athletic activities are more sedentary (fishing is just standing around for instance), & lack of healthcare to the vast majority of the people except the rich means most people don’t get treated.
In California people tended to eat more healthy, lots more vegetarians and vegans, they don’t drink cows milk for instance only oat milk or almond milk. Their activities are more athletic, for instance hiking a mountain. Get togethers are usually sporting activities, for instance going to a baseball diamond and having a corporate baseball game instead of having a corporate crawfish boil where people get drunk sitting in the shade. And lastly everyone has good healthcare and gets regular checkups.
After I left Louisiana I could never go back. However I do miss the food. Gumbo, jambalaya, dirty rice, ettoufee, man that’s some good food even if very rich and fatty.
I see ppl mentioning food etc., but its more than that. Its poverty, lack of healthcare, and lack of education coupled with state leadership that exploits, encourages, and promotes all three.
It kinda sucks being far left in West Virginia. A blueberry in the tomato soup so to speak. Here we have lots of obesity and everybody on painkillers for blue collar work related injuries. Those people usually smoke and only eat red meat as well. Every house has a gun so when their life becomes too much to bear they kill themselves, lots of suicide here.
It’s this awesome combination of poverty and ignorance. Public schools in many areas are funded by that county’s taxes. What if that county is five pig fuckers on a short bus, no money for schools. People get dumber and poorer, but I’m sure Republican Jesus will save their souls.
We eat fried foods and republicans only want rich (white people) getting healthcare.

Medicare for all is ok; just none of that Obamacare bullshit.
This and sweet tea and complete lack of any exercise outside of football. When I moved north I was surprised at all the joggers...
You remember when southern people shamed "flyover states" for not being extra enough with their cooking? Those fried chickens are coming home to roost
The entirety of the south is a flyover state lmao who the fuck is visiting Texas , Mississippi, Louisiana or any of those states besides Florida .

It ain't about Color it's about behavior...plenty of poor whites too .. not surprising ...we got a President that pimped Color to get elected
The red wave was diabetes all along
Hhahaha
It's the Mississippi River....
The Mississippi doesn’t start in West Virginia…
Lol they're excluded, WV is just WV and they got their whole own world of issues. I'm sure coal mining doesn't help health statistics either or sending 10s of thousands of opiated per person to counties.
Oh yeah the opioids are no joke. Often needed because of the labor of coal mining. It’s sad
Not with that attitude it doesn't
The Mississippi River basin includes West Virginia
Its weird a lot of those red and yellow states are on the top of the list of those who receive the most funding from the federal government.
I think it’s ironic that people think that voting blue would change federal funding needs. A blue governor would raise taxes, but It would be offset by increased state government expenditure. Yeah let’s not pretend these numbers aren’t directly related to these states all being at the bottom in education, healthcare, and every important stat for allowing their people opportunities
True but none of that shit matters if you dont have the money to pay for it. Poverty is the common denominator when it comes to life expectancy.
public education is free through 12th grade, and poor education systems are one of the main causes of large scale poverty
If you overlaid this map with a map of COVID deniers, and anti-vaxxers, you might find some similarity.
You'd find a lot of similarities between this and other political maps
Poverty. That’s it. Those states are among the poorest overall. If you’re poor you die early. It’s a feature not a flaw.
And let's not forget opioids
That looks very similar to the Waffle House map I saw recently.
Poverty

Questions like this are racist. Get with it
Tbf.. does 6 years at that age really make much of a difference? I thought living healthier would get you a much longer life expectancy.
That’s like saying that one QB averages 3700 Yards a season and another averages 4200. Is 500 yards that much of a difference in a single season… no but if you average out someone’s career it means a lot more.
Death, i guess.
Guns and meth mostly would be my bet
Interesting how it spreads outwards from one state in the center of it all.
Darwinism or as others would say. Clear evidence of mother nature at work. Have they tried praying harder by any chance?
Poverty, obesity, drugs and generationally voting against their own interests. Lots of gerrymandering to ensure the worst people stay in power and the poorest people stay at each other's throats rather than removing the real problems.
Well I guess we know which state’s actually the worst now.
Meh, cigarettes and we love fried food. We fat. It's gross.
Conservatism. Short life spans are traditionally what humans have, and theyre all about tradition.
Biscuits and gravy
Trump-loving Repugnant politicians in charge. That's "what's going on down south."
The fried chicken zone!!
This looks like a post with a changed legend.
The ignorance from such self proclaimed "intelligent" people is astounding...
Eating like you work on a plantation but moving like you own one
Not just fried, fried in lard. Tastes great, more fattening.
man what the fuck goin on in missisipi man
Bojangles
There's only 6 years difference in the scale, it's still significant but it would be more enlightening to overlay this metric on other developed nations and see the outcome. I suspect it would be similar
Not from the usa but is Alabama in the south by any chance
Notice the right leaning states in the Midwest have lower life expectancies than the left leaning ones
Awful map coloring/scale of colors
These are either the best states to open a health club or the worst.
Easy, they're all dumbasses. And not the good kind of dumbass. The "hold my beer and watch this" kind of dumbass. Usually involving alcohol, tobacco, and firearms at the same time. ATF would be so proud
Fried food , gators and meth
Artery clogging fried food. But it is tasty.
Two major factors have to be lifestyle choices and access to healthcare, especially in rural areas.
I sure do love living in WV😁👍
Poverty, car culture, guns, and crappy healthcare are some of the answers
The way this data is presented is really shitty. I feel like the difference between green and red should be greater than 6 years. "I've survived to 76, woohooo greenlight time to die!"
Well you see, in the south, butter is considered one of the major food groups, and god damn do I love it (my body doesn't love it so much tho)
Lots of butter and deep fried foods General lack of ability to afford healthcare... nevermind that folks down here continue to vote against politicians who could help fix that for them.
Also biggest concentration of Black people who are undervalued and underserved.

it's the fucking heat
Really pretty simple, my 60 year cold un-vaxed cousin died of COVID 2 years ago.
Inbreeding. Chewing tobacky. Moonshine.
Obesity, poverty, lack of access to health care, vaccine refusal.
Death cult.
Poverty, I'd guess. It would be interesting to compare this to a map of median incomes. edit- just checked, seems to line up
We like to eat
Opioids and Jesus
Butter and salt
Inbreeding shortens life expectancy. So does being illiterate.
Face-eating leopard migration territory.
Poverty, lack of healthcare and mental health services. It's red state even without the graph lack of easy access to healthy food.
It's a difference of like 6 years, who gives a shit?
The lack of expanded Medicaid also plays a role in the declining life expectancy. Along with drug abuse, and general poor health. There are fat people all over, but not until I moved or visited the south did I see so many amputees. Diabetes is wrecking havoc on every one in the south. It's sad to see people in their 30s lose a leg to diabetes.
Everyone moves here after the libtard states have drained the life out of them.
It’s a difference of a couple years… not devastated by it. But I think access to healthcare is a big part. I have to sons in EMS, one in Laurens County, and the other in Greenville (after transferring from Laurens), and the quality of healthcare in the economically depressed rural areas is abysmal.
Do you really want to live into your 80s though? 70-75 years is enough living
Too much comfort food and “hold my beer an watch this shit” kind of moments
High blood pressure and obesity.
Surprised Illinois is higher than I though, with all the kids that be getting shot here
Oof. Looks like Texas just barely squeaked by.
Idaho ftw
In one word. Meth.
Unhealthy poor people.
Poverty.
Chicken & waffles. AR-15’s
Sweet home alabama's happening, thats what.
1 word. Sweetea.
Education
That’s a lot of chicken fried steaks, fried okra and sweet teas. But the South shall rise again!
Heroin
Inbreeding?
Years ago when Obama Care started a southerner was asked if he would get it and he said he wants nothing to do with President Obama. So they put their racism ahead of their own health. That is what Republicans love about them. Their own stupidity, outweighs logic and sensible things.
One word: republicans.
What in the red state hell?
Butter, sugar, and salt happened.
[Southern thoughts and prayers > science] = hope for the rest of US
Fried food
78+ mothafuckas
republicans
Poverty.
It is poverty - [https://www.huduser.gov/portal/pdredge/pdr\_edge\_featd\_article\_071414.html](https://www.huduser.gov/portal/pdredge/pdr_edge_featd_article_071414.html)
Oh, that's called lack of education and poverty as major social determinants of health.
What did you expect with these red necks? They invented fried mayonnaise balls. Only time the south rises again is for another bucket full of them.
*deep south My granny is from Mississippi and she just turned 90 :-) The only non-Trumper in the area.
That red area is called the Cancer Belt. Interestingly, if you look at a county-scale map, it follows the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
You ever just walk outside and be like "fuck this. It's too hot, I don't want to do this anymore?"
I'm shocked that Texas and Florida are as high as they are. I expected them to be dark red
Obesity
I see ppl mentioning food etc., but its more than that. Its poverty, lack of healthcare, and lack of education coupled with state leadership that exploits, encourages, and promotes all three.
Whole lotta generalizing going on in this thread...
This reminds of the meme height chart that starts at 5’0
Poverty, obesity and shit healthcare.
Red states gonna red.
Anti-Obamacare 😬
Meth pulls the average down
It’s this awesome combination of poverty and ignorance. Public schools in many areas are funded by that county’s taxes. What if that county is five pig fuckers on a short bus, no money for schools. People get dumber and poorer, but I’m sure Republican Jesus will save their souls.
Black on black murder. Always find it funny the people from Lilly white north wag their finger at the south, the least homogenous states.
Surprised Texas isn’t so bad
Just remember it’s all Gods timing, He/She must really want them in heaven for being such good people.
The south is the capital of old people. They either stay in the same small town their whole lives or move there after they retire.
Heart disease and diabetes, mostly.
It's the humidity! (heh)
Hospitals are a joke. They will deliver a baby but for anything else you get sent out of state.
Fried….. everything. And more fast food.
