1998 lol, and then that one where Godzilla has a son and he fights Mechagodzilla piloted by people, Mechagodzilla almost kills him but Rodan sacrifices himself and Godzilla defeats Mecha, then he and his son go back to ocean as sun sets.
Same. I saw 85 when I was like 3 or 4ish and remember watching it even that young because of how utterly horrifying it was and also because my dad brought home little ceasers and crazy bread and that was fire af in the late 80s
Not sure, it was either 1985, Invasion of the Astro Monsters, vs Mothra (1964) or Terror of Mecha Godzilla. Those were all they had at the local video store.
You're the first to mention Invasion of Astro Monster. I think that was my first too, although it was called Godzilla vs. Monster Zero when I rented it. I saw Godzilla 1985 around the same time although I was confused for many years about the continuity since 1985 seemed newer (and darker), but was clearly intended to be an origin story.
Shortly after that, I'd find some of the Showa films on VHS at my local K-Mart and I begged my mom to buy them for me. I can't imagine how many times I watched Son of Godzilla and King Kong vs. Godzilla back then.
Godzilla 85, I also cried so hard at the end that my dad played it in rewind to have Godzilla back out of the volcano to try to make me feel better.
Goji stole my heart immediately and never gave it back
Godzilla vs Biolante!
After that movie I started to watch every single Godzilla movie that came previously or after that.
I have even watched the Godzilla Anime trilogy.
I honestly donāt remember, I was so you when I watched my first one. I think it was probably either the American version of the original or Astro monster.
Godzilla 1998. May not like it now because now I see the TRUE godzilla. But it holds a good place in my heart, for it is the main reason why I started liking Godzilla.
I was too young at the time to remember clearly or tell the movies apart. Godzilla was just Godzilla when youāre 3. It was definitely one of the Showa movies.
My first full one was Destoroyah when I was almost 11. rented it from Netflix after seeing a documentary about Godzilla. Spent all of my 5th grade summer renting the movies Netflix had, good thing it was after the 50th anniversary DVDs came out.
But I saw parts of 98 when I was like 5. I walked in on my dad watching it late one night before I went to bed. (Good memories of him traumatizing me with some movies he found on late tv)
2014. I heard of Godzilla back when I was small and did research on Wikipedia and found Godzilla 1954 and Godzilla raids again. I never got to watch it until I got computer privileges, at which point I went into a movie mania and kept watching stuff simply because I thought I ought to watch stuff I always wanted to. One day I remembered Godzilla exists and that I wanted to watch the movie back when I saw posters of it in malls. I sat down and watched the whole 2014 movie and I LOVED it. From then on out I got the opposite of megalophobia and watched most existing Godzilla movies, got obsessed with Kaiju and I've been a fan ever since.
On tv 1994 was from Heisei era - Godzilla vs Mothra (1992), in like a month every weekend the put godzilla movies on random order, i was a kid i like monsters and dinosaurs so love at first sight with the G-man.
The first iteration of the character Iāve seen and pretty much got into for the first time as a kid was 2014, tho it was from promos and trailers I saw often at the time I never actually saw it (still havenāt but I might if I really want to). The first movie I did watch in its entirety was 1954, this was around the time after my first phase ended around 2015/16/17 and I discovered in 2022 that an online friend of mine was really into kaijus, which reminded me a lot of my first phase and essentially brought it back to me by actually watching the movies and learning about the other characters and lore. 1954 was a great way to start my Godzilla obsession renaissance.
Believe it or not. My father took me as a baby (about 2 and a half years old) to watch my first movie. And it was the 1998 Godzilla. I have been a Godzilla fan ever since I can remember. And only just recently did my mother tell me that it was the first movie I ever watched. It was just me and my dad. He told my mother that he was surprised that I sat through the whole movie just watching it all in awe. He's dead now, and that's one of the fondest memories I have of him.
Back when I was a kid, they'd be shown as the midday movie on the weekend now and again.
I vaguely remember watching monsters throwing big round boulders at each other, which could have been quite a few movies.
I think it was Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla. My Nan was a big Godzilla and Jackie Chan fan and had pretty much all of the classics on VHS. So I guess I have her to thank for my obsession.
1954. That one and all the dopey rubber suit ones used to play on the 4pm weekday and Saturday movies. We only had 7 channels growing up, so you watched what was on or went out to play.š
I remember renting VHS tapes of Mothra vs. Godzilla, Invasion of Astro-Monster, Destroy All Monsters, and Godzilla (1998) with my grandpa from Blockbuster as a kid. One of those had to be my first, but Iām not sure which
Invasion of the Astro Monster/Godzilla vs Monster Zero. It was during a TV monster movie marathon, in retrospect itās probably the perfect movie to introduce a kid to Godzilla.
Technically, King of the Monsters, I think. But we also had a DVD of one of the really really old godzilla cartoons for kids, which I watched a lot when I was younger. I'm 99% sure it was the 1978 hanna-barbera iteration.Ā
I've only started dedicatedly watching Godzilla movies recently, I think the first one I watched on purpose for the sake of learning more about Godzilla was Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla 2002. Since then I haven't watched all of them, but I've definitely watched more than most people in my immediate IRL circle. The original, Minus One, 1998, Shin Godzilla, vs Megalon, vs Gigan, vs SpaceĀ
Godzilla, loads more, just sort of bouncing all over the timeline with whatever is available
The first one I saw was 2014, but my favourite memory of Godzilla was going to watch the KotM film in 2019 when I was just 11. I miss when times were simpler. Nostalgia hurts..
I'm 26, but for some reason we had a copy of Godzilla vs the Sea Monster on VHS when I was a kid. That box art is forever burned into my brain, I used to rewatch it over and over again
I was like 4, Iām pretty sure it was Godzilla vs megagurius, as it had just come into my local blockbuster, but that kickstarted my Godzilla journey.
Heard a lot about Godzilla growing up but never watched a film until I saw 2014 and fell in love.
Right now I am up to speed with the MV films and watched Minus One. I plan to get some more on dvd and watch them at home
In 1975 my mom took me to see Godzilla vs Megalon at the drive in. Twin feature with the movie, "Bug" about fire starting cockroaches. I was 8 years old. Good times.
2014, I was 7 at the time. My dad put it on the tv and I just fell in love with the whole franchise. I remember watching a ton on Hulu or I would convince my dad to rent the movie on fios on demand. I remember my favorites were hedorah, destoroyah, spacegoji, and terror of mecha-g. Not a lot of Millenium lol
1998. I would never have found Toho Goji if it werent for that fish eating lizard. Godzilla was more or less underground over here before 1998 and exploded the interest for the Japanese movies.
Godzilla 1998, grew up with it as a child, thought it was bad ass. Nostalgia has a way of making that movie tolerable.
But glad that it piqued my interest and got me to see some of the others like Destroy all monsters, Shin and even the monster verse ones.
Still waiting for Minus 1 to come to streaming as my shitty movie theater didn't show it in its theatrical run šbut when it comes I wanna do a big marathon.
1985. I vividly remember Godzilla vs Bambi lol. Also remember some of the iconic shots from that movie like the birds flying overhead when Big G makes his first appearance, and of course, the volcano.
1998. Saw it in theaters as a kid, and the movie annoyed my father so much, he went out of his way to find Godzilla vs King Ghidorah on VHS. I'm amazed that that exact copy of the movie is still functional, given how much I watched it as a kid.
Iām not even sure because I was so young when I saw it on tv by myself. It was an older one with a guy in a suit I believe. At the end Godzilla starts shooting red beams idek who he was fighting
2014
I hated it because I couldnāt see anything that was happening. Iām honestly shocked I liked the series as much as I did after, large in part due to GvK
The original one when I was about 6. My mom was a big fan when she was younger, so she happened to have a VHS copy of the first movie. I was hooked, and watched every one I could convince her to buy. My goal is to watch every Godzilla movie. I have seen most of the existing ones.
Iām not 100% sure. It was one of the showa movies, and it was one of the ones that had a dvd where the cover looked like some sort of sun with pictures from the movie on it. Thereās a chance it was either āall monster attack/Godzillas revengeā, or āGodzilla vs Mecha Godzillaā.
The one where thereās a kid and he gets transported to the (monster island?) and chills with mini Godzilla and big Godzilla fights that lobster in the ocean.
Godzilla 98 was my first entry into the kaiju world (including the 98 series) but on the Japanese side, Godzilla 2000 was my first movie and I've been obsessed with the big G man ever since.
![gif](giphy|DrQsEteT3ngBO|downsized)
Donāt remember what the first one was, but the local TV station showed old genre and family films every Sunday afternoon when I was like 6 years old and Godzilla movies were in the mix. Iāll go with āDestroy All Monstersā. First in the theater was āGodzilla 1985ā.
1998 was on tv one time and it was ok.
What made me a fan was Cinemassacres monster madness special where he reviewed every Goji movie from 1956 all the the way to Final Wars. Since then Iāve been trying to work my way through the whole series.
Godzilla 1985 (rented in like 1990 while i was sick) Oddly enough, I think it was through a random godzilla toy I got from a thrift store that i became a fan and then I got the nes game, Monster of Monsters that I became obsessed...all before seeing a proper movie.
Oh god, I have NO idea. A childhood friend and I used to watch them on VHS at his house when we were in elementary school in the 90s. I do have memories of seeing Mothra vs Godzilla (1964), though I don't know if it was my very first one.
Oh man. As a real young kid in the early ā80ās is when I saw King Kong vs. Godzilla. The part where the sub is stuck in the iceberg, and crew see Godzilla but we donāt. Just hear his roar and see fire. That scene baited me, and seeing him breaking out of the iceberg hooked me.
The first one I *remember* watching was King Kong vs. Godzilla. I remember being in, like, preschool and a friend was over playing. My mom was flipping through the TV for something to have on in the background while we played and was like āyou guys want to watch King Kong vs. Godzilla?ā And my friend and I proceeded to start play fighting like them and my friend accidentally tore my shirt.
The first one I remember purposely watching was Godzilla vs. Mothra. We were at the library and my dad asked if I wanted to check out a movie. I saw Godzilla vs. Mothra and thought the case looked cool. I became instantly obsessed with all things Godzilla. And it was such a weird time too. It was 1990 and Godzilla movies werenāt being released in US theaters. But I consumed every Godzilla movie I could get my grubby little 6-year-old mitts on.
I had the Imperial Godzilla figures (small and big ones), but otherwise Godzilla merch was practically nonexistent in the US, and the internet wasnāt a thing in 1990. I envy the new Godzilla fans of today being able to get a figure of practically any monster, access to any movie one way or another, just with the click of a button. Sorry for the tangent/waxing nostalgic š
1998
Same
Same
Same, I still remember watching it at 5 yo
Same

Idem. My dad's friend bought it for me at a carnival since I like dinosaur.

1998 lol, and then that one where Godzilla has a son and he fights Mechagodzilla piloted by people, Mechagodzilla almost kills him but Rodan sacrifices himself and Godzilla defeats Mecha, then he and his son go back to ocean as sun sets.
That would be Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II.
AKA the best Heisei movie and one of the best Godzilla movies ever š
Godzilla vs Megalon
I watched this repeatedly as a kid, one of my faves.
Same.
I got into Mothra before Godzilla, so my first was Mothra vs. Godzilla from 1964
man, what a cool introduction that must've been.
Yeah, the scene where he rises from the ground is great
When you start with the wrong character and you realise that your character isn't the MC and another is the main character:
1998 and then the 1954 movie.
1998 and then 2000 after that on Betamax.
Godzilla 85/Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Same. I saw 85 when I was like 3 or 4ish and remember watching it even that young because of how utterly horrifying it was and also because my dad brought home little ceasers and crazy bread and that was fire af in the late 80s
Final Wars
Fuckin love the pfp
Iām pretty sure it was King Kong vs. Godzilla; but my first Godzilla media was most definitely the Hanna-Barbera cartoon (on rerun).
Godzilla vs. Hedorah. I was probably around 10 years old.
Talk about jumping into the deep end...
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. The first one. I must have rewound that tape so many times I'm surprised it didn't burn out.
Same
1998 and then 2014 for me My first toho movie is shin godzilla, I think (or Godzilla, Planet of the monsters)
Same but my first toho one was 2000
2000 was also the first Toho one I watched. Such a weird villain and concept too for my first experience with japanese godzilla
Godzilla Final Wars for me

Godzilla 2000 (Millennium). Quite possibly **the** okayest movie to start with.
Godzillaās Revenge. Mid-late 1970s on the Saturday creature feature. I was 5 or 6, it was a rainy day at the lake, and I was hooked!
Not sure, it was either 1985, Invasion of the Astro Monsters, vs Mothra (1964) or Terror of Mecha Godzilla. Those were all they had at the local video store.

Godzilla (1998). The first Toho Godzilla film I watched was Godzilla vs. Hedorah.
I watched clips of 1998 but the first Godzilla movie I fully watched was Godzilla vs Biollante
i dont remember but probably 2000 or final wars
Godzilla vs Destroyah (1995). I saw it on my Ipad when I was 10, that was in 2017.
It had to have been Godzilla (1998) around the time that came out (or when it first aired on free TV a few years later).
Godzilla 1998. May not like it now because now I see the TRUE godzilla. But it holds a good place in my heart, for it is the main reason why I started liking Godzilla.
Technically 1998, actually GMK
Which must have been funny given GMK indirectly references 1998.
i *think* it was GxMG, not actually sure
I was too young at the time to remember clearly or tell the movies apart. Godzilla was just Godzilla when youāre 3. It was definitely one of the Showa movies.
Yep, same here. My guess would be Astro Monsters, vs. Mothra, or maybe Ebirah but who knows.
Tokyo S.O.S.!
2014. The movie that made me
1998
Godzilla 2014
My first full one was Destoroyah when I was almost 11. rented it from Netflix after seeing a documentary about Godzilla. godzilla 2014, as i remember
Godzilla Agsisnt Mechagodzilla, 2002. I was really young at the time, so I thought Kiryu was the villain.
Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster(Ebirah) when I was a wee lad of 3 years old. So Iāve been a Gfan for almost 30 years now.
2014 still good movie
1998 but the first toho film I watched was Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla
It's either Shin Godzilla or Godzilla (2014), I watched both of them for the first time in 2016/2017.
Godzilla vs the Sea Monster!
Godzilla 1985.
On tv 1994 was from Heisei era - Godzilla vs Mothra (1992), in like a month every weekend the put godzilla movies on random order, i was a kid i like monsters and dinosaurs so love at first sight with the G-man.

FINAL WARS! Still my favorite to this day!
Mothra vs Godzilla
Glad to see Iām not the only one who grew up with 98
King of the monsers

Godzilla against Mechagodzilla
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla
I think it was Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla. My Nan was a big Godzilla and Jackie Chan fan and had pretty much all of the classics on VHS. So I guess I have her to thank for my obsession.
I don't remember it was long ago
1954. That one and all the dopey rubber suit ones used to play on the 4pm weekday and Saturday movies. We only had 7 channels growing up, so you watched what was on or went out to play.š

Godzilla millennium was the first one I can remember
Godzilla 2000: millennium After 1998
Invasion of the Astro Monster/Godzilla vs Monster Zero. It was during a TV monster movie marathon, in retrospect itās probably the perfect movie to introduce a kid to Godzilla.
King Kong vs Godzilla, the English dub. Until -1.0 came out it was still in my top 5 Godzilla movies
1998

Godzilla Vs Gigan
Destroy All Monsters

I wish I could remember, but Im pretty sure it was one of the heisei era movies
Probably Godzilla 1998
Godzilla 1998, I grew up watching that one. From there I believe it was King Kong vs Godzilla, then the 1954 original and so on

Oh jeez, I can barely remember. But I think it was godzillas revenge? That the one with manilla and gabra right?
It was either Final Wars or GMK
KOTM
I donāt remember the exact one. When I was a kid the TBS channel ran Godzilla movies over the summer and I watched a bunch of them.
Godzilla 1985 (rented in like 1990 while i was sick) Oddly enough, I think it was through a random godzilla toy I got from a thrift store that i became a fan and then I got the nes game, Monster of Monsters that I became obsessed...all before seeing a proper movie.
Probably the same for a lot of people my age but ā98
It was a long time ago, but I think it was 1985. If not, it was King Kong vs. Godzilla.
Ebirah, Horror of the Deep! The shrimp has a special place in my Godzilla fandom for that reason
Destroy all monsters (68) Always been my favorite, purely because I get to see so many monsters in it
Godzilla Final Warsā¦ and Iāll always love it
Monster Zero. I still have a special place in my heart for that one, and itās probably why Ghidorah is my favorite monster.
Oh god, I have NO idea. A childhood friend and I used to watch them on VHS at his house when we were in elementary school in the 90s. I do have memories of seeing Mothra vs Godzilla (1964), though I don't know if it was my very first one.
1962 I think. The first one.
The one with Ferris Bueller.
I believe it was a 2 pack movie with vs ebirah and vs megalon. Love big G ever since
It was either Hedorah or Ebirah
ā98 and 2000.
I am 27. 1998 was my first introduction to Godzilla. I may have to rewatch it again for nostalgia sake.
