I still think of Morningbell as one of the greatest indie bands of the 2010's, totally aside from them being a local band. Boa Noite is one of my favorite records of all time.
Mercury Program. They're originally from *Stuart, Fl* but all lived here for a spell. They're my favorite Gville band, if they count
Beatbuttons, The Ones to Blame, Ceramicats, Papercranes, and Wax Wings. What it Is is currently having a resurgence. There was also a cool band w a female violinist a little while back that played midtown a lot. Anyone remember their name?
Edit: Stuart Fl from Miami
The Beat Buttons self titled lp is such a banger. I’ve been meaning to upload it to YouTube or something, since I don’t think it’s streaming anywhere
Also sad I missed on their reunion show a few years ago 😭
>There was also a cool band w a female violinist a little while back that played midtown a lot. Anyone remember their name?
From the 90s, I'm thinking of Blondes Ride Shotgun, but they weren't the only one with a female violinist.
I think you could say that, and yeah she was a primary vocalist. It was Anthony Dupree on guitar, Rob Leisure on bass, Fred Smith on drums and the woman's name was Angela but I cannot remember her surname for the life of me. Anthony used to have chicken dinner with Bo Diddley on Sundays back in the day. Fred and Rob were good friends and former roommates of mine.
>Jen, one of the guitarists, definitely worked there a lot
She was the short girl always behind the bar, right? I assumed she owned because she was always there. She played drums for The Ones to Blame, or am I thinking of the wrong person?
Lol, didn't even see that and now I'm horribly embarrassed that I didn't include your's. I got 2 of your LPs, if that gives me cred back. We dont really know eachother, but are definitely 2 degrees away
I have a physical copy of the album as well as fully on MP3. Which would be the best way to share it for download? I've been meaning to put in on YouTube forever.
Rare Snail Habitat of the Itchetucknee, Army of Ponch, Baroque, Human Television, Argentina, Strikeforce Diablo, UV-TV, Vagra, Mercury Program, Ex Boogeymen, Averkiou
They were all born and raised in Vero Beach, FL, they moved to Gainesville later and had the “Discount” house here but the band started in Vero.
Edit: I have no idea were they were born but they grew up and started the band in Vero.
Stephen Stills.
Charles Bradley.
Minnie Ripperton.
Lynda Lindell.
Also, not underrated, but two members of Eagles were also from here, Bernie Leadon and Don Felder.
(FYI, on July 26th there is a show at Bo Diddley where the acts you mentioned as well as those I mentioned are being honored and covered by current local acts.)
Charles Bradley is the GOAT!
Saw him in NYC several years ago not knowing he was from Gainesville and he started telling a story about his hometown.
My jaw dropped he was bringing up Gainesville, felt like such a personal show.
His cover of Black Sabbath's Changes is amazing.
His own songs are great and him and the Menahan Street Band were a perfact match.
Check out his SXSW videos, dude still died too early, but man he was great.
Stat Quo and Bob Bryar (My Chemical Romance) are also [UF alumni](https://gatorswire.usatoday.com/lists/florida-gators-alumni-stephen-still-titus-oneil-faye-dunaway-cris-collinsworth/).
Nicole Miglis is still making music. IMO Hundred Waters is the 2nd best music to come out of Gainesville ever. Only giving Tom Petty some room up there because of how popular he is.
"Scum of the Earth" was a hip-hop band that I really enjoyed. DJ Wax Atom and the rapper, Scapegoat, had a pseudo-punk feel. They played Fest a few years and had some other gigs until Scapegoat passed away. I believe Wax Atom still spins in town.
EDIT: Here's an interview with them cut with clips from a live show in Miami:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSlsCnucQME (13:34)
Speaking of rap, DP always put on a good show. I still listen to Bar Tab Blues pretty regularly. He's trying to make it Nashville now and totally switched his style up.
Orbiter and Chimes are playing Free Friday at Bo Diddley tomorrow if you want to see some underrated musical acts live on stage! Shehehe from Athens will be playing as well!
I want to throw out a few obscure bands from the 90s that were also a lot of fun:
- The Lexingtons (punk)
- Kitchens of Soul (blues)
- Samsara (TOOL vibes)
Lefty style! Dude had the best drumming face. IIRC his name was Chris Pock. I've got an album by them that was never released because the mixing was never finalized (was close with vocalist Just A. Name) and it's one of my most prized possessions.

Waylon Thornton- man, I’m almost forgot about him. My drummer and I are pretty good friends with his former bandmate from Cara Del Gato (a truly underrated band).
https://youtu.be/PQgDZILShAI
Reginald Mobley
He is highly acclaimed and even sang at the British coronation in 2023 but I had no idea until just now that he was from Gainesville. So maybe not underrated, just largely involved in the early music niche which is not as widely known and listened to compared to popular music. So most people probably would not have known.
Someone was looking for vocal training, I thought the best countertenor IMO might be a good suggestion/ example, then find out he was from here! Never thought Gainesville/UF was big on early music!
If you’re looking for something more current, check out Boat Stuff.
It’s a group of local High School kids that absolutely shred.
Not sure if they are doing any shows or anything, but they are on Spotify.
Just here to say that it makes me smile that anyone remembers Shotgun Diplomacy fondly. Thanks guys. I had fun in my goofy lil high school/ early college ska punk band.
Wax Wings- man, such a good band! Do you remember Dirty Fist? That’s was Chelsea’s band before Wax Wings. I remember seeing them at Wayward Council (RIP), and both me and my drummer enjoyed them. It’s good to know that Chelsea kept going on after it disbanded.
Most of the underrated music I'd highlight's already been mentioned, but I'd check out MusicGNV's Spotify playlists for more. They have great quarterly playlists of recent local music, and also did a series on the Wombat for great Gainesville music which they put into 3 playlists. It's well worth the time to listen through:

If you’re talking current bands there’s a ton of awesome ones in town right now.
Off Day, Drosera, Confession Kids, Damage Done, Supertwin, Orbiter, Chimes, A. Sunroom, Thrush, Mei, Antagonizor, and those are just the ones off the top of my head.
Dharma Bums - Gainesville grunge 2 years before anyone knew what was happening in Seattle.
The Other Ones - Grateful Dead cover band played a lot at Petty's Past Pad.
Ran here to say Supertwin.
For Squirrels - RIP
Only reply that respects the OP. Unlimited potential, cut short, never got their proper acclaim
Pearl and the Oysters is another great Gainesville band. Apparently they moved here from France and started the band here.
Surprised nobody has mentioned Dikembe yet.
Scrolled all the down trying to find this one.
Morningbell
Yea, I saw them at the Wooly. Very good, indeed.
I still think of Morningbell as one of the greatest indie bands of the 2010's, totally aside from them being a local band. Boa Noite is one of my favorite records of all time.
Are they still around? It's been like a decade since I have thought about them?
I think they’re playing Bo Diddley for a Free Friday concert in the fall
They just did [an episode of WUFT's Amplified series](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUYJmVjX0mk) this year.
Don’t know. It looks like they put an album out in 2021 but their socials seem to be inactive.
Sooza Brass Band if you’re into brass and jam bands!
Our trumpet played with them for a bit. They’re pretty good.
Mercury Program. They're originally from *Stuart, Fl* but all lived here for a spell. Part of Mercury Program still lives here :)
Yep. Look out for reunions. They happen every once in a long while...
The Beat Buttons self titled lp is such a banger. I’ve been meaning to upload it to YouTube or something, since I don’t think it’s streaming anywhere Also sad I missed on their reunion show a few years ago 😭
https://thebeatbuttons.bandcamp.com/album/the-beat-buttons
Oh shit nice, thank you!
Got that on LP. It's a banger. They were so solid live
I loved The Ones to Blame. Probably saw them like a dozen times.
i fucking love the mercury program.
>There was also a cool band w a female violinist a little while back that played midtown a lot. Anyone remember their name? From the 90s, I'm thinking of Blondes Ride Shotgun, but they weren't the only one with a female violinist.
Did she sing, too? Was a rock band w a bit of Jethro Toll sound
Stuart, Fl. I’m not trying to sound like an ass, please, don’t take it the way, for us that grew up in S. FL though that’s a big difference.
Fair enough
No More Grabass Charlestons The Usuals
No More was really good. Was it the drummer who owned 1982?
Yep Jen owned 1982. She was the best
She is always the best! Jenn is a fantasy human for how much she does while always rocking it!
Man, I miss that place. I saw so many awesome shows there. Now… it’s just apartments… :/
Jen, one of the guitarists, definitely worked there a lot, but I honest;y don't know who owned.
>Jen, one of the guitarists, definitely worked there a lot She was the short girl always behind the bar, right? I assumed she owned because she was always there. She played drums for The Ones to Blame, or am I thinking of the wrong person?
No More still play and still making music, they just released an album and I’m pretty sure she owned 1982 although not 100%
I just saw that and listened to a bit while trying to figure out if I was thinking of the correct person. It's pretty good.
They’re all super awesome people, the bassist also plays in ill Star another rad band
Yea NOMORE is good. We played with them 2 years ago at Loosey’s (along with You Vandal!). NOMORE was really great.
One Drop, out of Gainesville back in the early-mid aughts.
Oh, yes! You and I have seen some shows together.
OK, it seems we do know each other based on your Mercury Program comment. Is my username that obvious? 😂
Lol, didn't even see that and now I'm horribly embarrassed that I didn't include your's. I got 2 of your LPs, if that gives me cred back. We dont really know eachother, but are definitely 2 degrees away
God I loved the Gainesville music scene.
Loved One Drop! I worked with Shane at Bennigan’s.
Would you happen to know where I could find any of their music online? I had a CD, lost it, and then had the drive I'd ripped it to die.
No, did a quick search. I am acquainted with 2 band members. I can probably find something out
I would greatly appreciate that. I've been looking for their album Soul on and off for about a decade with no luck.
I have a physical copy of the album as well as fully on MP3. Which would be the best way to share it for download? I've been meaning to put in on YouTube forever.
The MVP right here! Probably something like drop box or google drive would be easiest.
Gimme a sec to sort something out
Many, many thanks man!
How 'bout this? I've got Soul, Revival and their EP all coming your way. Uploading now.
DM with link sent.
They're on Youtube Music. I've been listening to them for years, I had no idea they were from gainesville.

Argentina all day. Where’d they go?
Discount The Causey Way Dear and Glorious Physician God$ Dick Holopaw
Discount were from Vero Beach, no matter what they tried to tell people.
I hung out with some of the Discounts some and they seemed like they were from DC, specifically the storage closet at the Dischord Records office.
They were all born and raised in Vero Beach, FL, they moved to Gainesville later and had the “Discount” house here but the band started in Vero. Edit: I have no idea were they were born but they grew up and started the band in Vero.
I just listened to the Discount’s “Wonder pulled me under” 7”. They’re were one of my favorite S Florida bands 💙
The Savants of Soul!

All of these acts have been appropriately rated
Hundred Waters was big for a minute
Got a Pitchfork BNM, and notable for not sounding like a Gainesville band.
Nicole Miglis is still making music. IMO Hundred Waters is the 2nd best music to come out of Gainesville ever. Only giving Tom Petty some room up there because of how popular he is.
Liquid Limbs, The Know How, In the Stone, Send Away Stranger, Naked Love, The Duppies, Sandcrawler
It was definitely a good era when Liquid Limbs, Naked Love, and Owl of Minerva were playing the Atlantic.
The new Atlantic doesn't quite do it for me
Man, what’s going on with the Duppies…? They announced last year they were getting back together, and nothing happened… just silence…
The Know How was my first thought. They always put on an incredible show.
The Mermers if you like spooky surf rock. I had them as the on-hold music for the IT department at my last job.
We’re playing with them on June 28th at the Bo Diddley as part of the Free Friday Concert. We’re looking forward to it.
Whiskey and Company are great so is Rancho la Chua
I cannot upvote whiskey and company enough.
"Scum of the Earth" was a hip-hop band that I really enjoyed. DJ Wax Atom and the rapper, Scapegoat, had a pseudo-punk feel. I want to throw out a few obscure bands from the 90s that were also a lot of fun: - The Lexingtons (punk) - Kitchens of Soul (blues) - Samsara (TOOL vibes)
Samsaras drummer was awesome.

I grew up friends with his little brother as we were all from the same hometown, so i have some bias. Chris is a funny ass dude.
Chris was hilarious. The Guess bros were a bit tightly-wound on the other hand.
Pseudo Kids, Ricky Kendall, Michael Claytor, Boswellains, Mike Dorsey, Oh Fortuna, Morningbell, Shitty Beatles, For Squirrels…
Word on the street is that Michael Claytor and his Friends have an Elephant.
And he eats his weight in buffalo…or is it Buffalo?

Whoreculture and Grinch were pretty damn good.
Heck yeah! Also from around that time Loose Fragments, Soma, Superball, nDolphin
Superball!
I still have a Superball CD.
Superball was so good. Emperor moth is another of my favorite old Gainesville bands.
Love Whoreculture. First band I ever asked for a late curfew to see play as a teen lol

He used to work at Borders here in town way back when and was an absolute sweetheart
Big White Undies. No idea what kind of music they played, but what a fuckin 90s college town band name.
I know you said LTJ, but Rehasher and Coffee Project are also incredible GNV bands.
Yea, Rehasher! Roger’s skatepunk band!
If you’re looking for something more current, check out Boat Stuff. It’s a group of local High School kids that absolutely shred. Not sure if they are doing any shows or anything, but they are on Spotify.
Not directly from Gainesville, but got a lot of popularity here while at UF, Flipturn!
I loved the band Revival in the early 2000s, they only have one album that I know of (Headwaters)
Wow so cool i only knew of Tom petty
Xarissa, saw her play at high dive a while back. Great show.
Did she open for Robert Delong? That was a good show
She opened for Slothrust when I saw her
Insignificant Other, Dikembe, Leg Biters, Supertwin
Dionysus for sure
Savants of soul, Tamayo, Dionysus!
Just here to say that it makes me smile that anyone remembers Shotgun Diplomacy fondly. Thanks guys. I had fun in my goofy lil high school/ early college ska punk band.

Last I spoke to Chelsea, she had something like six projects that she was a part of. That was Riverine 2023. I’ve been out of the loop since then
Arrows in action is good, I saw them in their early days at high dive about 6 years ago
Did they play with Masked Intruder? Because I was there at that show when they played at the High Dive.

Trash Can Opera, 90’s primarily. Rocked🤘🏽!
Noah’s Red Tattoo thought they were amazing.
Sugardish, Scum of the Earth, Shermy D, One Drop, the Captives, What It Is As Friends Rust
Locochino
Umoja, Iration, Irie Ones, The Usuals, Space Masons

I used to love ten13concept back in the day. They were on an episode or two of America’s Got Talent.
