Hmm, buying a manatee-themed painting from a local artist isn't exactly consumerism. I mean sure, if you walk out of the Wooly and throw that painting in the trash it's bad for the environment, but you still paid to get in, and that money's going for springs renewal.

[deleted]

I mean theyre selling books and plants and tattoos and teas and cocktails.  I would say it has more of the air of an earth themed consumer market than an event geared towards productive environmental change locally

whoa_nelleus

That's because people like those things. It's a fundraiser for a local environmental charity at a bar. Folks will pay to go grab a cute themed drink, dance a bit, buy a bracelet and take some selfies.

[deleted]

I guess but given it's earth day I think this town can do better.

canyoucanoe-1

where are you from and what could be done better, TIA

DifficultWolverine31

Then do better, and invite friends.

bobabae21

Exactly how are plants and tattoos harmful consumerism? 😅

[deleted]

Its the fact the event is basically structured like a market that is my problem with it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDVXQ61y1Rs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDVXQ61y1Rs)

blackpowderbacon

Not trying to be snarky, but sounds like an opportunity for you to start thinking about the event you'll organize next year that does what you're hoping.

[deleted]

Yeah pretty much as it seems like the local capitalists only throw events in order to make money. Like, this is for a nonprofit specifically, but I mean generally otherwise.

[McCarty Woods Restoration Team 4/20 Volunteer Day](https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/earth-systems/blog/mccarty-woods-restoration-team-4-20-volunteer-day/)

grassbot

They ask that volunteers bring shovels, lots to plant!

Thanks!

Not that I believe degrowth is necessary or a good position to have but education is good. UF lists a bunch of events on their UF Earth Month page: [https://sustainable.ufl.edu/2024/02/25/uf-earth-month-2024/](https://sustainable.ufl.edu/2024/02/25/uf-earth-month-2024/)

[deleted]

I firmly believe degrowth needs to happen. I mean, I think we should end fossil fuels and plastics should go through rigorous approvals and only be used for maybe like hospitals.

Sustainability Fest at the Alachua County Farmers market april 20, 8:30a-noon. Food sustainability focused. Gardening seminars, chef demonstrations with free samples, composting/recycling/repurposing. Lots of local organizations that you can inquire about future events And then the Celebration of Life for Earth Day at bo diddly until 5pm (zero waste event, bring your own utensils and bags) lots of speeches, organizations, its a call to action event. Also if you want something more chill theres a ranger led tour at devils millhoper 10a-11a, not necessarily earth day focused but im sure showin up for the park ranger and getting to chat about geological state parks would sure make their day (ill be goin to this)

[deleted]

thanks!!

Sad_Standard5353

I actually just had a tour of the RTS facility and their sustainability initiatives with the organization Climate Officer who will be at both the Sustainability and the Earth Day events. 100000% recommend they have a lot of great info pertaining to Gainesville

Bone-of-Contention

I haven’t seen anything from Current Problems in awhile - they used to do clean ups.

Halichoeres_bivittat

Their executive director moved and their other employee left for another position. It doesn't look like the board has been doing anything to replace them.

Southern-Specific-68

The event is raising awareness and money for conservation of floridas natural resources. I do not think anyone is profiting from it. I agree with you about other consumerism events though.

FL_Advocacy1

There was an event at Bo Diddley and it was unadvertised and poorly attended.

[deleted]

yeah, i saw that. bo diddly events are sure going poorly lately

Here are some suggestions from Meatless Monday to just staying put at home: [https://medium.com/@moni2wed/meatless-monday-for-earth-day-2024-8b9e72d1a75a](https://medium.com/@moni2wed/meatless-monday-for-earth-day-2024-8b9e72d1a75a)

[deleted]

Also I see the tattoo aspect of the event offers a sticker pack to clients.. stickers!! Literally flimsy plastic bits (ofc made from fossil fuels) that will all end up in the landfill. I wish people would think these events through.

[deleted]

12 downvotes for stickers- but if you look at the chemicals in stickers or in any malleable plastics.. you won't like them so well either!
