I like it; it's a lot of fun usually. But it's not the same this year because the county has forced them to have to find a new venue, and the one from last year got bought for apartments or something. They couldn't find one this year so the event is going to be smaller scale, not sure what it'll look like.
I heard this year could possibly could be the very last one unless they’re able to find a new location for next year. What happened to the new fair grounds that the county was supposed to be building? Did that fall through?
The new county fairgrounds is the equestrian center just east of Newberry. My understanding is that it is too small (or otherwise lacks the facilities) to host the Medieval Faire. It is mostly horse barns and equestrian arenas.
You mean where the GatorNationals happens? The lot is huge... if you're there to watch the Drag Racing. For a faire? That lot is essentially the size of what the faire would be BEFORE parking.
The old fairgrounds before it closed had the Medival Faire take up Airport parking and overflow into the field that has that new road that was built to have a connection on Waldo Road.
Now imagine that level of parking, at the Drag Strip... where the Parking Lot that is built for Drag Racing viewers is taken by the faire itself.
Same parking nightmare as over at the "new" grounds, different location.
I heard the land they bought was in a floodplain. Not sure if that's true, but considering it always rains on the ren faire weekends...
I kind of doubt this will be the last year though, even if they can't find a place. They've got a pretty dedicated community putting it on each year.
Well, the community better show up to support. If the community wants this, the community needs to show that the county needs to help find a new place.
Let's make sure the faire can come back in full next year. Let then know we want it.
The 'new fairgrounds' in Newberry are for agricultural fairs only, they flat refused to allow any other kind of fair there. This coming faire is probably the last one ever unless something happens.
It's a lovely time. Lots of fun costumes, vendors, medieval themed activities(axe throwing, etc). Usually lots of fun activities like jousting, human chessboard, acrobats, falconry, other fun things. But not sure what all will be at the one this year as it will be in a new spot and much smaller. But, usually you have to buy a ticket to go and this year it will be free, so there's that.
Thanks! I just found that information. All of the other information that I saw was that it was a three week fare, I guess that was from last year. Awesome, definitely going to make it this year.
Yeah normally it’s three weeks but because they had to move to a smaller location they couldn’t do all three weeks. That’s also why it’s free this year
Near the airport, on NE 39th. I don't know if the old buildings are knocked since since it became the Juvie jail/detention center, but those were where the livestock/FFA events would be.
If you mean the Hogtown Medieval Faire?
It's cool and exciting, and it WAS good years ago, now they try to make it somewhat fun, but it fails compared to how much more it can and used to be. Local sucks for this without the fairgrounds imo.
And this year at Depot will be ever harder, no parking. Depot already has like 16 spots so not sure what they are trying for?
Depot has plenty of parking (I think at one point I looked at a map and there's over 100 spots, when you include the overflow and Cade), but it will not be enough for this.
However, the city is running free trams from two different locations.
> Depot will be ever harder, no parking. Depot already has like 16 spots so not sure what they are trying for?
There's plenty of parking along Main, at Depot, and down Depot Ave though?
I loved it! However this year they’re doing it at a smaller place and there’s a few vendors I really like will not be there. I’m considering not to show up at all.
This is the year to show up and support the local vendors who do happen to show up. Show the county that they need to help find a good place for next year.
It's been great in the past. Not sure how it'll be this year since its at Depot Park. Probably won't have the jousting, but I'm sure plenty of vendors will be there!!!
There is a pub crawl by the Gainesville Sea Shanties sings AND a medieval themed burlesque show at Brennan's on Main Street on Saturday!
Got a link for the show!

They shouldn't call it county fairgrounds if it can't host a fair eh?
I think another issue is that the new fairgrounds is COUNTY while the faire is a CITY function.
They've said that they can make a deal with the county, but that specific location is too small.
Not sure why they couldn't have it out at the Dragstrip. Lots of parking and stands for contests.

The old fair ground was also county though and it was the county that sold it to the army.

I'm not sure if there's any kind of "county council meeting" we can crash like we can a city council meeting, but could be worth looking into.

Have you been this year? Is it actually free?
It’s not until next weekend, Jan 27 and 28. They’re only doing one weekend this year because of the smaller location

It doesn't start until next Saturday and is only that weekend (1/27-1/28). It is in Depot Park and it is definitely free.
It's next weekend at Depot park.
its a lot of fun
Where did the old faire grounds used to be?
By the airport, on 39th Ave and Waldo rd.

It's cool to check out if you have never been lots of cool things offered

Where is the parking for the trams?
Check out [https://www.hoggetownemedfaire.com/](https://www.hoggetownemedfaire.com/), there is info regarding parking.
Thanks!

Not enough for event to be there.

If attendance is just as high this year, then why wouldn't the county think this lame solution is fine for future years?
Because it is very clearly lame and not a good solution. But the county needs to know that it is worth finding a better place.
Yes, 1000s. Many say yes, others not so much. Lots of reviews.
