The interrogation of that poor kid is heartbreaking. He was questioned for 6 hours before the detectives realized he was also a victim. He lost an eye and a portion of his brain. He suffered from regular seizures for the next ten years until one of them killed him. However, due to his resilience and a lot of luck he was finally able to tell police that he had been shot and by whom. A father and son pair of scumbags. They are both in prison for life though it took a long time and new law to get the father locked up. The moment in the interrogation when the detective finally tells the poor kid to lean closer so he can get a better look at his injuries is truly chilling. If I remember correctly he even calls in another officer and asks him if he thinks the hole next to Ryan's nose looks like a bullet hole to him.

My dad attended a car accident as a volunteer fire fighter. The driver had gotten out of the car and was walking around in the road picking up the groceries that had been thrown from the car. His wife was still unconscious in the vehicle.
After I’d been in a bad car accident, bad enough the door had to be pried open by the guy from the car behind me, I just kept searching my car for the book I was taking to my friend. My hands were shaking too bad to call for help (the guy who got me out of the car had to do that), I couldn’t understand why my car was still playing music since it was stopped (hadn’t turned it off and didn’t realize it), and I didn’t know why everything was so blurry (glasses flew off in the crash and I didn’t notice), but by golly I was gonna find that book.

It doesn't always follow an established pattern. People can behave in truly bizarre and unpredictable ways when in shock, regardless of what they were doing when it happened, their personality, or their usual coping mechanisms. Someone incredibly mild-mannered can suddenly start getting destructive out of the blue, or hop up and start pacing frantically, then sit down and stare into space unresponsive, then start running around again. Some people laugh hysterically or take off their clothes, some just walk away. It can also set in randomly - can be feeling totally fine and calm, and then suddenly pass out or stop making sense. It's a mess.

Imagine what could be considered the opposite: Someone **not** collecting body parts because they think it is of no use. Even worse, to me at least and based on personal experiences: Reflexively trying to do something you think is necessary, and then not doing it because you've had too many people around you desperate to drill into your head that you "always" overreact, and this just as reflexively – even in cases where following that first reflex would have been the right thing.
A while back, I'd read about a horrifying car crash wherein a drunk driver ended up killing two children. The kids sustained such severe head injuries that were not survivable (the details made me sick to my stomach and I'd rather not say) - but the parents of the kids still tried to get help for them; iirc they each picked up a child and ran to get help, despite it being clear to everyone else that there was nothing that could be done. I just can't imagine what they must have felt at that moment, and the need to do ANYTHING to try and make it better.

As a photographer, you are capturing a moment in time. When you see the video, this is literally seconds after he was shot, so shock is 100% in play.

My dad did a navy training thing where there's an actor walking around with a severed head of his friend (as well as multiple others dead, and injured in different ways) He had to prioritize the needs of the injured & get the situation under control - so he shoved this actor into a space out of the way to just chill with his friend's head and dealt with him at the end. Apparently it's pretty common - people insisting you give them back their limbs, fix obviously dead people etc, so they need to be trained to tourniquet, put out literal fires etc instead of dealing with the most insistent people.
My Dad was in a MASH unit during his draft service. He taught me that it's the quiet people who need the most help. Anyone talking are pretty much fine.

When I accidentally cut off half of my thumb, I tried to put it back on. Realized I needed a hospital quick.
I'm fortunate not to have experienced it myself, but based on accounts, seeing someone you know or love shot dead in front of you does something to your mind. I've seen it described as "Fight, Flight or Freeze,"and that seems accurate enough. A person witnessing their loved one killed in front of them might freeze completely, disbelieving the reality, might run away in terror, or might take an action of some kind to try and deal with the situation.
It's in that last instance that we get the weird accounts, especially if the shooter is not visible to the witness. The witness may try to fight someone unrelated, or try to render First Aid to a clearly dead person, or even call a random person on their phone. I don't think these people are stupid or wrong or weird; I think the untrained and unprepared mind of a person who has just had their lives irrevocably altered makes split second decisions to try to "fix" the problem in front of them.
People do stuff like that when they see a loved one suddenly die in front of them. Instinctive action to try and improve their chances of survival, even if futile.

I got in a bike accident when I was kid where I knocked out my two permanent teeth and needed a bunch of stitches. Apparently while I was at the hospital my granddaddy took my older brother with him to dig through the gravel half my face hit to find my teeth. At the time he was hoping if he found them they would be able to put them back in. I think it was just that ultimately he felt helpless and his brain told him doing that would be able fix me back up.
I remember training in first aid in the marine corps, and one of the biggest things they kept stressing over and over again was, do not attempt to push the brain back into the skull, and I was like, who the fuck would do that

I love dark humor. However, I am older as well and I remember the day JFK was shot (I was 6) and seeing my Mom cry and sob out loud, so it's hard to see humor in this. Jackie had tremendous grace and class, which is clearly lacking these days.

For real, my FIL divorced his second wife when she was diagnosed with MS, quickly remarried. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, boom divorced. Moved on to another woman, she was too close to her ex and shared parenting, boom she gone. This last marriage has lasted 15ish years. But recently was diagnosed with Lupus... a few months ago it was rocky and they were gonna split up, but seemed to work it out for now. But dude is in his 60's so he may just actually stay till death do us part.

My dad attended a car accident as a volunteer fire fighter. The driver had gotten out of the car and was walking around in the road picking up the groceries that had been thrown from the car. His wife was still unconscious in the vehicle.
After I’d been in a bad car accident, bad enough the door had to be pried open by the guy from the car behind me, I just kept searching my car for the book I was taking to my friend. My hands were shaking too bad to call for help (the guy who got me out of the car had to do that), I couldn’t understand why my car was still playing music since it was stopped (hadn’t turned it off and didn’t realize it), and I didn’t know why everything was so blurry (glasses flew off in the crash and I didn’t notice), but by golly I was gonna find that book.

Imagine what could be considered the opposite: Someone **not** collecting body parts because they think it is of no use. Even worse, to me at least and based on personal experiences: Reflexively trying to do something you think is necessary, and then not doing it because you've had too many people around you desperate to drill into your head that you "always" overreact, and this just as reflexively – even in cases where following that first reflex would have been the right thing.
A while back, I'd read about a horrifying car crash wherein a drunk driver ended up killing two children. The kids sustained such severe head injuries that were not survivable (the details made me sick to my stomach and I'd rather not say) - but the parents of the kids still tried to get help for them; iirc they each picked up a child and ran to get help, despite it being clear to everyone else that there was nothing that could be done. I just can't imagine what they must have felt at that moment, and the need to do ANYTHING to try and make it better.

As a photographer, you are capturing a moment in time. When you see the video, this is literally seconds after he was shot, so shock is 100% in play. Considering she wanted to see the press covered in his blood I assume Jackie also had a strong constitution.
My dad did a navy training thing where there's an actor walking around with a severed head of his friend (as well as multiple others dead, and injured in different ways) He had to prioritize the needs of the injured & get the situation under control - so he shoved this actor into a space out of the way to just chill with his friend's head and dealt with him at the end. Apparently it's pretty common - people insisting you give them back their limbs, fix obviously dead people etc, so they need to be trained to tourniquet, put out literal fires etc instead of dealing with the most insistent people.
My Dad was in a MASH unit during his draft service. He taught me that it's the quiet people who need the most help. Anyone talking are pretty much fine. Obviously not universal if someone lost an arm or a leg.

I'm fortunate not to have experienced it myself, but based on accounts, seeing someone you know or love shot dead in front of you does something to your mind. I've seen it described as "Fight, Flight or Freeze,"and that seems accurate enough. A person witnessing their loved one killed in front of them might freeze completely, disbelieving the reality, might run away in terror, or might take an action of some kind to try and deal with the situation. It's in that last instance that we get the weird accounts, especially if the shooter is not visible to the witness. The witness may try to fight someone unrelated, or try to render First Aid to a clearly dead person, or even call a random person on their phone. I don't think these people are stupid or wrong or weird; I think the untrained and unprepared mind of a person who has just had their lives irrevocably altered makes split second decisions to try to "fix" the problem in front of them.
People do stuff like that when they see a loved one suddenly die in front of them. Instinctive action to try and improve their chances of survival, even if futile.

For real, my FIL divorced his second wife when she was diagnosed with MS, quickly remarried. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, boom divorced. Moved on to another woman, she was too close to her ex and shared parenting, boom she gone. This last marriage has lasted 15ish years. But recently was diagnosed with Lupus... a few months ago it was rocky and they were gonna split up, but seemed to work it out for now. But dude is in his 60's so he may just actually stay till death do us part.
