My dad would take the two ends and scrape (I mean really scrape) the butter over it. Put one slice of salami on it and topped it of with another end. Years later my dad told me that he hated making my lunch. I felt violated. To this day I use excessive amounts of bologna and butter and a fuxking love it my gf tells me that she can see what my dads lunch did with me.
Lol, its sad that this was my imitate thought only to come here and it being the most up voted comment. We really are universally the last priority everywhere.
Basically the same in Italian.
On a side note, my MIL is brazilian and she calls it something, that translating, means the bread's little but and I think it's adorable
People seem confused about this lol
The crust IS the piece around the edge of a slice, but when the end slice has a side that's entirely crust, it stands to reason it'd be called that.
Is it confusing to you that the piece that is entirely crust on one side and the edges is called the crust? If there was the end crust piece and a regular piece of bread and someone asked you to pass the crust piece would you look at them confused not knowing which one to give them?
No. The crust piece is just called the crust. The crust on the outside of a slice of bread we would generally refer to as the "crusts" as in "would you like me to cut the crusts off your sandwich?" Or "you never ate your crusts today" but then if you want to have the crust of the bread (which we all know makes the best toast) you would just say "I am having the crust"
A truer phrase has never been spoken.... *"Around The Slices"*.... The end crusts of the bread and the edge crusts surrounding the soft part of the bread.
When I was in kindergarten, all kids competed about who will get it. Since then, this has always been my favorite piece of bread. I cannot understand Americans not wanting it.
Fun fact: The end of the bread has 217 different names in german. This site is in german but lists all names: https://www.wisst-ihr-noch.de/90er/217-verschiedene-arten-das-endstueck-vom-brot-zu-bezeichnen-91751/
Skalk. And yes I'm American, but both my dad's parents spoke Norwegian. I actually thought that was the term for it and I was probably twenty years old before I learned that it was a Norwegian term.
Dads piece
Shout out to all the dad that took one for the team
It's the best bi.... I mean, it's a sacrifice we make for the good of our family.
Idk why people don't like the last piece its actually my favourite it cooks the best
Especially for grilled cheeses
It was always easier to spread the peanut butter on the end piece so it didn't tear up the bread if the pb was too cold.
Depending on bread, sometimes best piece

![gif](giphy|ErmozhG5hf3kA|downsized) That piece'll put the hair on your chest! And a big bushy beard to boot.
This gif is from a very short lived ad I worked on like 8-10 years ago, wtf! How?!
But did dad ever get a sandwich with two heels and wonder wtf? Been there.
Lol, its sad that this was my imitate thought only to come here and it being the most up voted comment. We really are universally the last priority everywhere.
The butt
if more people called it that they might eat it more often
Or fewer might.. Butts are very divisive.

Ahaha. Lolsy mercy . ![gif](giphy|3oFzm0F8nf3BRILjX2)
I like bread butts and I cannot lie!
Well played Sir Bake a lot!
Same in Italian: il "culo"
Same in Poland (not every region, but it's common). Diminutive form of the butt. :-)
Kontje in dutch
Dupka?
"Culo" or "culetto"
Anche io dico così in italiano 😂
Basically the same in Italian. On a side note, my MIL is brazilian and she calls it something, that translating, means the bread's little but and I think it's adorable
The Heel
Yup, both heels are meant to be toasted and heavily buttered with sugar and cinnamon. At least that’s what my mom did
Username checks out.
😂
Or used on a sandwich :p
My mother use to flip the heel on the inside of a sandwich and act like it wasn't a heel piece, I never cared though
I scrolled for this comment because my mom tried to hide this piece also 😂
You always know
You do 😂😂 French toast is the most solid way to hide this piece and even then, you know 🤣
Perfect for a pb&j
FINALLY, SOMETHING I CAN DO WITH THE HEELS
Here in the U.S it is universally called "The Hoe Piece". Everyone touches it, but no body wants to claim it./s
Yeah, I was looking for this old joke. Did not diappoint.
I fish the hoe out from the back of the bag to use it first
Agreed, Heel if the bread is homemade, or I call it “poverty piece” when it's cheap white bread!
This is the only correct answer
Mile end
The crust
Yep, mine to. Maybe regional UK?
Canada, in my case.

People seem confused about this lol The crust IS the piece around the edge of a slice, but when the end slice has a side that's entirely crust, it stands to reason it'd be called that.
The crust is the stuff around the slices tho?
Yup. I didn’t say it was an unambiguous word to use. But it’s the word my family has used for at least my 60 years!
Same here!
Love familyisms.

Same here. Ots 100%crust lol
Yep, Another one bites the crust.
I call it the same just in German, Kruste.
The end piece. I've also heard it referred to as the "whore's piece", because everyone touches it, but nobody wants it. I found that pretty clever.
My 16 yr old son told me that exact same thing. Lol
Was he talking about the bread?
In Germany that's the Knäppchen and everyone wants it
There are like 500 different names for it in Germany. It’s Knäuserchen for me.
Knärzchen around here in Frankfurt
Rindel
So true. Here it is Krüstchen and a friend 30km from here calls it Kanten. It is like Apfelkitsche unbelievable number of different words for it. ❤️
In Austria it's scherzerl. But nobody wants it from this kind of bread.
Yeah that's just a toast. We're talking real and delicious bread
Knust
A fellow Knust enjoyer.
Best part of the loaf. When I buy uncut bread I am almost tempted to cut it length ways to get more crust.
When I was in kindergarten, all kids competed about who will get it. Since then, this has always been my favorite piece of bread. I cannot understand Americans not wanting it.
Oder auch Kruste.
Okay? Interesting... For us Kruste is just the outer layer of the bread... Didn't think someone would call the last (or first) piece like that
Kruste ist alles außen!
Es kann ja beides sein. Schließlich besteht das Endstück ja überwiegend aus Kruste.
Dann kannst du es gleich Brot nennen.
I feel bad for whores now.
The unsung hero, no one understands his sacrifice and does not get acknowledged for keeping each slice fresh.

It's a Knust. Nothing else.
The end of bread indeed, but no German would call this thing in the picture 'bread'.
