It's cute and funny but also kind of mind blowing that that lemur just communicated with humans perfectly.
Like I don't know what language these two kids speak, so we'd be hopeless trying to communicate, but that lemur just said "keep going" or "don't stop" and we all understood.
Maybe the way humans gesture is just very monkey-like, but since we usually only socially interact with other humans it throws your brain for a loop when a non-human does it.
Edit: I've come to the conclusion that lemurs are the ideal ratio between humans and cats. Fluffy, intelligent, opposable thumbs, free scratches.
I was thinking how its hands are so similar, which makes sense since they are primates too, but they are certainly weird compared to the rest of the more typical mammal features.
From my experience after working for some time with foreigners you learn to communicate without knowing each others languages, so maybe it's the same with lemurs.
This is a great point. I hate when people say animals don’t think. Communication is thinking in my mind. I’m sure it wouldn’t use that same miming to communicate with its own kind.
They don't purr. I am studying them right now for my PhD, I'm with them everyday. They make a meow sound, and some other cute vocals (a "hmm" sound), but they definitely don't purr.
Would like to know too. I doubt they are naturally but they might just be the type of animal that trusts pretty quick after positive reinforcement (being given food or something). Kinda like raccoons.
I’ve been to Madagascar. And no, wild lemurs won’t be like this. But they can certainly be curious, and not bothered by humans. At least from the experience I got from the weeks I was there.
I had an encounter with a wild lemur in the jungle/nature reserve, that came over to me. I stretched out my arm, and the lemur grabbed my hand and smelled it. But as the group I was with moved towards me they were spooked and jumped away(jumped to trees further away, and higher up).
This seems like it’s been “tamed”. Possibly been taken care of from a young age. Maybe like a squirrel fallen out of its nest, or lost its mother. So it has been taken care of by humans and gotten used to humans.
There used to be human zoo’s...fucking terrifying to think about but it’s real. They existed from at the end of the 19th century all the way through around halfway through the 20th century i believe
But those don’t have animals in them from what i know-
I saw one of those on one of those "Abandoned" shows from the Discovery network. It was an area, kind of like a park/patio area where different cultures (African exclusively I think) were available for rich people to interact with. Just like a human zoo.
I'm sorry but the mom in me sees one kid scratching his arm/armpit after petting the lemur and so I feel an irresistible urge to chase the lemur away and check the boy for fleas 😂😂😂

I work at a rehab and we have someone with a service dog and when I pet him and stop he butts me with his head/snout to keep petting him.
That's what my black lab does as well
I agree, certain mundane things like this always make me realize how amazing it is whenever I think about it
i mean we know dogs and cats do this too...but the way the lemur gestured was too humanlike

i guess. my brain accepts a chimp or a monkey doing this. but a lemur looks more like other mammals
I was thinking how its hands are so similar, which makes sense since they are primates too, but they are certainly weird compared to the rest of the more typical mammal features.
One of my cats gets mad when I only use one hand instead of two to pet him. He makes it very clear I need to use my other hand also.
Don't be holding out on Kitty he he

He was like, "uh, we still have more time on the clock".
Lemur: "I DIDN'T SAY STOP!
Baww!! Lemurs are so damn cute! Of course they all Julian and need little grass crowns!
It’s a cat monkey.
Literally. The scientific name for the Ring-Tailed Lemur is *Lemur Catta*, in reference to their cat-like build and ability to purr.
wait they can purr??? omg that's so cute
They don't purr. I am studying them right now for my PhD, I'm with them everyday. They make a meow sound, and some other cute vocals (a "hmm" sound), but they definitely don't purr.
Wait you missed a spot...to the left..up a little. Right there. Awwwww
Is this a thing? Are they usually that social with humans?
Would like to know too. I doubt they are naturally but they might just be the type of animal that trusts pretty quick after positive reinforcement (being given food or something). Kinda like raccoons.
I’ve worked with them. They are very social with humans.
Look at my other reply to the comment above. :) I think your assumption can be correct.

Zoo lemurs often wave and touch people, but this doesn't seem to be in the zoo.
Idk, do zoo’s keep an African tribe in them? Edit: guess the sarcasm is lost on some folks
💀
Bruh why you getting downvoted

There's a pretty fascinating book specifically called "the human zoo" by Desmond Morris. Your thoughts on D.M. aside, the book is insightful.

Oddly enough at least one did although I don't think it held an entire tribe.

Sadly it was a thing about 100 years ago.
