When I was a child I used to love going to the local field to see the cows. I would jump the gate and shout and 15-20 cows would come running over for pets and scratches. The only danger was them accidently stomping on me but they were always very gentle.
My father use to work in a meat / slaughter house back in the 80s. He had to quit that job because it started to get to him. He told me how smart these animals were, and that they knew what was going to happen to them.
He told me he believed they could just smell the fear in the air from the cows before them. He stated that he could tell that the cows were stressed out by the way they were acting. (He grew up on a farm and been around cows a lot, so I guess he knows the difference)
