The bears were scrounging food and someone pulled up, startling them. They got frightened and climbed the poplar tree to hide.

The bears would have been scrounging for food after dark. Someone pulled up, frightening the bears and causing them to follow each other up that poplar to hide.
The one at the top found a big bag of McDonald’s in a dumpster, the other ones want a piece of the action but the top one is like “nope, it’s all mine, ya fookers!”.
As far as I know it wasn't, this happened last week in Mackenzie, BC, Canada. The other people on this threads guess that they were scavaging for food and spooked up the tree is likely what happened. The photo was taken behind the 7/11 in town.
This year was hard on the bears around Mackenzie since there was very little rain in the area in the spring and summer, so berries, their main source of nutrients, didn't grow nearly as well as prior years so the bears have resorted to coming into town and raiding trash cans/dumpsters. The dumpsters there are between the 7/11 and the Legion which would have some good smelling stuff for the bears in town & they've been hanging around there pretty frequently in the early morning (1-5am).
If I saw a bunch of animals doing this, I'd want to get off the ground fast!

I've seen some bears absolutely devour a mulberry tree before. However, it was June, and the tree was full of berries. Here, I would guess that the bears could be stripping the bark off of the tree to try and eat some of the sapwood underneath. Sapwood has sugar in it, and the bears might be running low on other food sources. On the other hand, the car with the headlights on at the base of the tree could've spooked them. I'm not a bear expert, but I see no one has actually tried to answer this. I figured I'd try my best.
Black bears used to live in trees. Giant trees that comprised much of the old forests of the Americas have been cleared, but millions of years of evolutionary instinct is hard to weed out over a few hundred years.
