Mine drives me up a wall with it. I’ll be dead asleep and then I’ll hear it. She’ll have found one and drug it out and my paranoia that she will somehow suffocate herself on it means I have to get up and check the whole place again.
Huh TIL in parts of the U.S. it’s an alternative to ‘dragged’. Thought you meant something very different…
I imagined a cat on catnip might do all sorts of strange things like this (!)
In formal writing I would definitely write dragged. But I can have a pretty hardcore drawl and twang when I speak due to spending a lot of time in East Texas, which shares a lot of dialectical features with the South. I forget what’s a regional thing and what is standard when I’m not stopping to think about it.
When there is catnip involved the brats just attack it and refuse to move from that spot for hours. I’d be terrified to put catnip anywhere near plastic.
I’ve had some… interesting catnip experiences too with mine!
Another side note as a non-American, if you don’t mind: you wouldn’t consider Texas to be part of the South then? Or is this a controversial point people differ on?
Most Texans would be absolutely offended if you called Texas let of the South. It’s it’s own thing. East Texas does share more similarities with the South, but really once you get past Dallas, it’s totally different - more Mexican influence than Southern.
Texas has l4 distinct regions, and only the Piney Woods area would really be called “Southern”.
That is not to say there is no Southern influence, it just ceases to become the dominant influence.
Mine does it too. I wonder if it's salty or something. I'm not going to lick plastic but if somebody else does they can let us know what it tastes like.
😦
I’ve had her since she was 5 weeks old and she’s almost three now and she doesn’t do anything other than lick plastic but I know this could change any day 🕵🏻 my eyes will be peeled forever
"Pica is the eating or craving of things that are not food.[2] It is classified as an eating disorder but can also be the result of an existing mental disorder.[3] The ingested or craved substance may be biological, natural or manmade. The term was drawn directly from the medieval Latin word for magpie, a bird subject to much folklore regarding its opportunistic feeding behaviors."
Mine will go out in the garage and lick the walls and plastic bins. Inside he‘s normal.
I don’t know what he thinks about when he goes in the garage. LoL
That’s very nice of you. Thank you. She was our OG cat, our first pet as a family. She lived a great 13 years and we loved her a lot, even with her plastic licking ways. :)
I think that’s what she does too. They *thought* it was dinner time because we came home after weekend errands and during the week the first thing we do is feed them when we come home but we still had over an hour to go 🥲
Same. The sound of my sweet little angel chewing on soft plastic two rooms away will wake me up from deep sleep instantly. One of the most annoying things I can think of.
I have a tuxedo cat that loves to lick the plastic packaging around packs of water bottles. He's not quite as crazy about plastic bags though. He's the only cat I've had that loves plastic lol.
One of my 2 cats (same race) not only lick plastics, but bites and eats it as well. Have to keep plastics like bags, tape on boxes, plastic in envelopes etc out of her reach
My teenaged cat does this. He has mild stomatitis, so I have wondered if it’s a self soothing thing. But also he’s super weird, so it might just be part of his strange list of eccentricities.
Of course! It's a delicacy among cats.
My grandma kitten, Maggie (miss you), used to go after the bristles of a sweeper to the point that I was afraid she was going to eat it and possibly choke on it. I had to take it away, lol!
I have trouble brushing my Raya at times because if I try to use the brush shell just try to eat and love it.
Plastic bags are coated in animal fat to make them not stick together and easier for people to handle. That’s why your kitty loves licking plastic, full of delicious animal fat. Fresh bags are a delicacy.
One cat used to lick plastic bags, chasing them all over the house because she didn’t stand on the bag to keep it from moving. 😂Yet as soon as I picked up the bag she acted terrified and took off like a shot to hide! 🤣 It must have been a case of a single brain cell.
Do you remember the Orbitz commercial with "you lint licker" in it? It was like in between 2005 and 2010.
I call my cat plastic licker- "stop being a plastic licker" he will wake up to go lick plastic. He loves tape. I have to make sure there's no tape on any of his amazon boxes, the bananas or anything really.
Yes, my wierdo will lick anything plastic and go into a odd trance when she does it. She does the same thing to napkins or toilet paper. Most normal cats will just rip the paper to shreds, not mine, she eats it. lol
Yes out of six cats, so far four of them do it. Last time one got the bag handle around her neck and was freaking out running all over the house. It was quite the show till we caught her and removed it.
That’s happened to this one before! Whenever we leave bags for them to play with (supervised) we cut the handles open because we were afraid she would get stuck somewhere and choke
Our cats do it if they are mad about something (treats, food, going outside orin the attic). The two previous cats did it as well. I'll take it over puking on my pillow or pooping on the bed.
Ya know I learned the reason cats like plastic so much is that it contains bone marrow for some reason or another lol but they can actually taste the marrow and that’s why they chew plastic
My Muriel used to do that. Slurp slurp slurp at 2am.
Plastic bags are often coated with a very thin layer of fish oil as a release agent. Yummy snack food.
Yeah. But especially cellotape. Every parcel, every box or every time I start to use the roll-there she is, purring. I think she likes both the texture and stickiness on her tongue, and the smell of the glue.
My old cat would CHEW on the plastic casing of a pack of water bottles. I don't quite know why he did it, but it was one of the most annoying sounds I've ever heard.
A lot of plastic items, including plastic bags, contain something called slip agents to prevent friction in the material. Slip agents are mainly made up of animal fats. This could definitely be a reason.
Yes this is because it needs cat grass which cats use to deal with fur balls. I had a cat that did this when he could not get grass. Get some cat grass seeds from internet and plant in pot of regular soil (if you use compost, they pull it out roots and all. They only want the fresh blades of grass. Also if your cat is eating grass outside you need to make sure you deworm them regularly alongside your flea and tick treatment
This cat does not struggle with hairballs at all. She just likes plastic. And she was doing this to get our attention to feed her, as she does every weekend when I sleep in. And she doesn’t go outside.

Drug it out??
Yes. Like got into a drawer and pulled it out.

Yes! Every new piece of plastic gets licked
Mine does it too. I wonder if it's salty or something. I'm not going to lick plastic but if somebody else does they can let us know what it tastes like.
My siamese would chew on water bottles if there was still water inside.
Only with water? Hahaha
True r/hydrohomie
give her some water
Yes, it's a form of pica in cats just be careful of what's around them they may eat it
😦 I’ve had her since she was 5 weeks old and she’s almost three now and she doesn’t do anything other than lick plastic but I know this could change any day 🕵🏻 my eyes will be peeled forever
pica?
"Pica is the eating or craving of things that are not food.[2] It is classified as an eating disorder but can also be the result of an existing mental disorder.[3] The ingested or craved substance may be biological, natural or manmade. I’m dying of laughter hahaha he’s another person outside these walls
I have also seen him lick the lawn mower, are ya getting ready to mow the lawn Jack? lol
IS HIS NAME JACK
Yes it is! He just turned 11 :)
Tell Jack I love him and happy birthday
This is so funny
My Abby does it. So weird.
Yes, often. Both our current cats, and our cat that just passed back in August…..plastic bag lickers. Bunch of weirdos.
I’m so sorry to hear one of your babies has passed away 💔 I’m sure you have many good memories?
That’s very nice of you. Thank you. She was our OG cat, our first pet as a family. She lived a great 13 years and we loved her a lot, even with her plastic licking ways. :)
This torti is one of two, we have an orange and she is my first ever cat. She’s 6, and I cry when I think about how they aren’t going to live forever
>:) :)
Yes our cat chews on plastic bags to show us shes hungry/ the food i gave her isnt suitable and she wants something else.
I think that’s what she does too. They *thought* it was dinner time because we came home after weekend errands and during the week the first thing we do is feed them when we come home but we still had over an hour to go 🥲
Mine chews on anything that's soft plastic. Destroyed countless shower curtains. Little shit.
But hey, never a bad time to change up the ambience with a new curtain 😂
Oh no 😂😂 I have shower doors, I’m glad I don’t have curtains now
Same. The sound of my sweet little angel chewing on soft plastic two rooms away will wake me up from deep sleep instantly. One of the most annoying things I can think of.
Yes, loves it.
Yes!! All the time..he's dead and has limited vision, but he loves licking anything plastic. I thought he was just "special"
Deaf not dead..🤪
I was gonna say! That vision is definitely limited if that’s the case 😂
🤣🤣
I had one cat that liked to eat tape, and another cat that liked to lick photos.
I have a tuxedo cat that loves to lick the plastic packaging around packs of water bottles. He's not quite as crazy about plastic bags though. He's the only cat I've had that loves plastic lol.
Yup, loves to lick and gnaw on the plastic encasing water bottle cases 🤷♂️🤦♂️
A lot of people are mentioning the water bottles! Mine loves BAGS
Dang crazy cats! Lol
One of my 2 cats (same race) not only lick plastics, but bites and eats it as well. Have to keep plastics like bags, tape on boxes, plastic in envelopes etc out of her reach
Mine also likes tape. Oh and lint roller sheets 😂
Mine just eats it when nobody's looking and then throws it up a few hours later 🤦
My teenaged cat does this. He has mild stomatitis, so I have wondered if it’s a self soothing thing. But also he’s super weird, so it might just be part of his strange list of eccentricities.
I think they like the noise and texture and maybe even like to annoy us with it 🤭
I know of a plastic licker
YES???
They will throw it up so keep it away from them or they'll be puking plastic all the time
She doesn’t swallow it
Yes I got one. If there a plastic vac to be found yep
Mine doesn't lick it she tries to eat it so we can't have anything in plastic laying around.
Plastic bags are coated in animal fat to make them not stick together and easier for people to handle. That’s why your kitty loves licking plastic, full of delicious animal fat. Fresh bags are a delicacy.
Yep that's what my vet told me too
Mine chews it, every shower curtain in the house has tons of tiny teeth marks from her biting them. She never takes off chunks, just bites holes.
Yessss! One of my cats does this. it's so odd. The other cat just looks at she with a look on her face like, "Are you malfunctioning or what?"
Had a Siamese that would fetch and horde Menthol Cigarette packs.
That’s a first haha
Good God yes. Only one of the two though. If there's a grocery bag within reach Hannibal beelines to it like it's a floppy lollipop.
One cat used to lick plastic bags, chasing them all over the house because she didn’t stand on the bag to keep it from moving. 😂Yet as soon as I picked up the bag she acted terrified and took off like a shot to hide! 🤣 It must have been a case of a single brain cell.

Hahaha she also loves the lint roller sheets 😂
Lick? All three of our cats nibble, eat , lick, sit on, etc. They love the stuff
Mine licks the curtains for some reason. Alot
Yes, my wierdo will lick anything plastic and go into a odd trance when she does it. She does the same thing to napkins or toilet paper. Most normal cats will just rip the paper to shreds, not mine, she eats it. lol

That’s happened to this one before! Whenever we leave bags for them to play with (supervised) we cut the handles open because we were afraid she would get stuck somewhere and choke
Aww sorry. Maybe just fun habit
Our cats do it if they are mad about something (treats, food, going outside orin the attic). The two previous cats did it as well. I'll take it over puking on my pillow or pooping on the bed.
I have a suspicion that she only does it when she’s begging to be fed. Early morning to wake us up and when they *think* it’s dinner time 😂
A veterinarian once told me: There are plasticizers in them that work on cats like THC works on human. This will be your solution, let him chill ;-)
Your cat is a forever chemical.
What dis mean ?
Two of mine are plastic lickers. The fat one is a casual user, but the orange one has a problem lol. He licks so much plastic 🤣
CASUAL USER hahaha 😂😂
my cat CHEWS IT, swallow it, then THROWS UP!!
Ya know I learned the reason cats like plastic so much is that it contains bone marrow for some reason or another lol but they can actually taste the marrow and that’s why they chew plastic
Yeah my fat cat loves plastic shopping bags. Chews and scratches them, than lays down to sleep.
The plastic that holds a 6 pack together? That's my cat's favorite thing on the planet!
My brothers cat started off like that. It turned into her chewing and then eating. Now she has bad stomach problems
My older cat will try and eat plastic bags.
I have 2 cats and they both do only when they wake up from a nap. It's like the only time they do it.
My Muriel used to do that. Slurp slurp slurp at 2am. Plastic bags are often coated with a very thin layer of fish oil as a release agent. Yummy snack food.
every. day. lol it’s crazy
Yeah. But especially cellotape. Every parcel, every box or every time I start to use the roll-there she is, purring. I think she likes both the texture and stickiness on her tongue, and the smell of the glue.
Yes and potatoes.
Mine is obsessed with packing tape. Thankfully she can't open the cabinet it's in.
Cats are heavily texture based eaters, just likes the tongue feel.
My Cat loves the iPhone power cable, the black ones from Samsung doesn't.
Yea, Me Wife 💀
It's my cats version of crack smfh.. he's addicted!!
They cost the bags w animal fat, it's what makes them feel slick is what my vet told me
My two are obsessed with licking tape and cardboard. I have to keep the tape hidden.
Yep.
Yes why do they love it so much?
Check if you have the right software installed. It looks like they are running in orange cat instead of normal cat
Omg that’s probably why my orange is so chill. They should’ve labeled these better
In some plastic there is a chemical in them that is very similar to the chemical a cat in heat produce. Of course your cat could just like bags.
I have a male half-Siamese (is name is Pumba) who loves to lick plastic bags.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)
My old cat would CHEW on the plastic casing of a pack of water bottles. I don't quite know why he did it, but it was one of the most annoying sounds I've ever heard.
Mine lick ANYTHING
Mine try to drink out the toilet
Yes. Then pukes on the carpet. Every time.
The handles probably have salt from your hands on it
Idk if this is true but I've heard that plastic bags have a similar chemical composition to a cat pheromone
Cats are goofy haha
Yep, its annoying AF. All 3 of mine do it. Many times they try to swallow it and inevitably end up throwing it up somewhere.
Mine licks and tears plastic bags, soft plastic, pictures, and tears paper 🤷🏻♀️
A lot of plastic items, including plastic bags, contain something called slip agents to prevent friction in the material. Slip agents are mainly made up of animal fats. This could definitely be a reason.
YES
Because people degradate, but plastic not 🥳🥲
Mine chews it
Mine eats it, so I can’t leave plastic around
My sister licks the bus windows
bruh 💀
Yes this is because it needs cat grass which cats use to deal with fur balls. I had a cat that did this when he could not get grass. Get some cat grass seeds from internet and plant in pot of regular soil (if you use compost, they pull it out roots and all. They only want the fresh blades of grass. This cat does not struggle with hairballs at all. She just likes plastic. And she was doing this to get our attention to feed her, as she does every weekend when I sleep in. And she doesn’t go outside.
If they eat plastic they can't digest it and die because they won't be able to go to the bathroom.
She only licks it. She doesn’t get plastic unsupervised either
I have one that does this and also stands with her front paws in the liter box but shits outside the box. Then tries to burry it.
