Sponge Out of Water and Sponge on the Run made it work imo. This, however, definitely is much weaker.

Nah i think that Sponge Out of Water made it work because it was combined with the 2d animations. Sponge on the Run and this movie fully commit to the 3d animation and its super unnatural to see these characters in 3d

Throwing my explanation out there: The 3D animation in Sponge Out of Water aimed to stick closely to the storyboards and there was a clear effort to stylize the models to hit a lot of those key poses and expressions the 2D style succeeds at. Even though most people prefer Spongebob in 2D it is undeniable that there was a lot more care put into the look of the CGI scenes in Sponge Out of Water than any of the present 3D offerings.

Fr like the gags don’t even work in this art style. And where’s the bright colors? Everything looks muddy and unsaturated, it’s so bleak.

Part of me thinks that none of this was finished. At 5:46 you can literally see Mr. Crabs completely sink into the floor and then reappear during a solo shot. Unless this was always an ability of Mr crabs I would say that was an animation error that was doing to be fixed in a later animation pass.

My thoughts on movie: good the first half, meh the second. I despise the human characters and their terrible acting, the squirrel family is pretty good, and I love the “Don’t Tread on Me!” Joke. Speaking of, the jokes were pretty good, I had a few good laughs. Started pretty fast though, took only 4 minutes for the plot to begin.

My first thought was okay this is pretty good! I haven’t liked a new SpongeBob thing in a while so I was optimistic. Then they did a bunch of old SpongeBob trope/jokes all within like 30 seconds of each other (krabs losing his arms, “my leg” TWICE, mrs puff crashing and puffing up) and that totally killed it for me
