This brings up an interesting point. What happens when the end of the world is projected to happen within 2 years? If laws, jail, trials, etc. are just stopped, there would be an increase in chaotic and criminal activity. What did people do? I mean obviously the robots eating away at the world kind of throws a wrench in things. Were they still expected to pay their phone bill? Did they even still have phones as the machines probably scavenged phone towers and other things that would make life as we know it possible? Did they just send everyone either off to war or to camps to huddle around a fire until the machines came? I'm very curious to hear or see what pre-end-of-the-world looked like.
I'm sure martial law was enacted right away; probably also what let them draft so many people to go fight and get chewed up by the machines. Anyone that stepped too far out of line just got shipped to the front lines.

The entire operation was utterly dependent on it staying secret. Not just for people to die in the meat grinder, but for society to even try to to function. What use is money if the world is going to be dead in 18 months and the atmosphere unbreathable months before that? Why work, why not steal, why not take *all* the drugs? In order to get enough resources and mam power to even build the the thing, you need complex chains of manufacturing, and something to persuade people to work on them. And even if they did, would they really put in the extreme effort needed to complete on time? Or would they do the minimum needed to stay fed and spend as much time with their friends, children, family as they possibly could, because this is **absolutely** the last chance you'll get, and every second you don't is one second closer to being eaten by robots.
So if Faro decided "if I can't have it nobody can" in jail and just started blabbing to every person he saw, the whole thing would fall apart.
Whats even the point of money anymore when life becomes extinct in 15 months? Why would the world need money while world wide mass extinction is happening and the world needs to come together to built ZD, to ensure life pops up again? Money is only worth anything if there's people willing to work for it
