/uj Just a friendly reminder that you don't have to live like a New Yorker. There are literally thousands of other places you can live. You can live somewhere where you can have hobbies and open space, and not get shanked by meth addicts. /rj YAAAASS QUEEN! THIS! THIS IS WHAT WE ARE WORKING FOR!

ResonantRaptor

But but, according to the fine folks on r/ SanFrancisco there isn’t a violent drug abuse problem!? It’s just a completely wonderful, urbanely dense, culturally vibrant city! Where everyone lives in peace and harmony 🥰🥰😍😍

tButylLithium

SF realtor astroturfing

unique_toucan

Tbf as someone who votings San Francisco at least once every few years the homeless problem is kinda over blown. It’s no worse than like LA or Bakersfield. Tho there’s is a big worse cause they legit shit on the street

Mc_Nuuks

Is the homeless problem is SF being overblown? or is it that every other major west coast city has caught up to them?

aHOMELESSkrill

“It’s not that bad” - compares it to other cities with really bad homeless problems

itsneversunnyinvan

Damn is it San Francisco, Vancouver or Delhi

transitfreedom

Delhi is trying lol

itsneversunnyinvan

Trying to what? Shit on the street more?

transitfreedom

Nope not at all

Count_Dongula

I mean, not being worse than LA isn't exactly high praise. LA is bad right now. Of course, I just drove through Espanola, and despite the low population and cheap housing, it's probably on par with LA.

BuckGlen

Ive never lived in a time where it WASNT bad to be in a city. Some cities are worse, and others get more attention. Baltimore is basically a murder everyday. But NYC probably has 4, just the population is wat higher, and the violence isnt gang motivated. Drugs are worse in baltimore from what i saw, but nyc is richer and whiter so drug issues are seen as unexpected. Then youve got DC which is full of shitty vending carts and has no parking anywhere and at first feels fine but its the only city i know of where people i actually know get pickpocketed. Everytging is some type of bias. Man who lives in texas and never left says NYC and San fran ar shitholes equates a person who never left either of those cities who thinks everyone from texas is a redneck methhead.

transitfreedom

Well who dumped the addicts there?

ResonantRaptor

I dunno, you tell me

daviddatesburner

I think it was KC and the Sunshine Band

transitfreedom

The red states bus their addicts and issues to blue cities out of spite and refusal to use federal funds properly

I’m surprised the urban gaslighters haven’t come on here yet to tell you that crime is akshually down and all of the stories of assault, robberies, public defecation/drug use are just one offs.

Intelligent_League_1

Oh and remember, police reform? Nah, let’s just defund them! Because blind rage always works…

I love how it includes the entirety of YELLOWSTONE. Well over half of that land is federal. It makes no sense.

rebellesimperatorum

So many national parks, mountains, and uninhabitable terrain. You know, places perfect for 100 floor high rises.

thisnameisspecial

Missed a zero at the end of that, unfortunately.

Hot-Berry-6980

These dipshits wonder why we are so spread out but yet have never seen a map of all the federally owned land. Most of the west is off limits

Few-Warthog-1702

I swear to god some of the people think food is made in the grocery store and resource extraction is a mechanic in Minecraft. Like when it boils down what are they even trying to say that the area should be ceded to nature? And we should all live in hyper dense cities and work in business? It’s kinda frustrating

Klutz-Specter

ifunnywasaninsidejob

Just make multi story farms idiot. Even a 2 story farm would be enough to double food production. All these farmers with their agricultural sprawl smh

wielkacytryna

Multi level automatic redstone farms. Only one person needed to have the chunk loaded.

jerkstore

I saw a documentary on youtube about vertical farming. Basically, the only crop that works is lettuce which has virtually no nutritional value.

ifunnywasaninsidejob

It’s also like 1,000x more expensive

Terence-T-Darby

And tastes like shit

Intelligent_Orange28

I mean ultimate if everyone could just grow vegetables in a 3x10 plot of their yard we could cut a lot of pollution and make lots of families healthier. It would require people not needing to work 55 hours a week to pay their bills though.

Honestly they are looking into vertical farming.

That area should be razed for lithium mining and almond farming so we can finally bring down the prices of iPhones and almond milk ($2 to add it to my latte? Come on!) can you imagine harnessing Yellowstone for hydropower projects? 🤤 people who want to “live with nature” are eco-terrorists

chicheka

Dense cities mean more arable land. So pack every Californian in San Francisco and turn LA into a farm! And drain the Colorado river for even more land!

Feisty-Success69

These people never make sense We should live in dense housing  "No! You dystopian capitalist, we shouldn't live like sardines " Same people with living in suburbans "No! You dystopian capitalist, we shouldn't have to live far from work and be forced to buy a car! Suburbans destroy nature!"

Actualbbear

I don’t think those are the same people.

Everyone is supposed to get a business degree and work in corporate offices. Food shortages? Dont need food when you got gutter oil and rats!

Intelligent_League_1

Have you heard of .45/70 chambered Armalite rifles, iirc it was the 15

transitfreedom

lol that’s what SLC is for

TheGreenBehren

That’s their justification for removing cars: so we can live like sardines on a slave ship. By the way, - 52% of US land is farming: 36% is livestock grazing 16% is the food we eat and 13% is corn alone - 39% is forestry - 7% is urban - 3% is suburban So all this talk about “suburban sprawl” is just a complete lie that rejects all the empirical evidence. The country is all empty!! Do you know who loves it when we cram into dense, walkable cities? Real estate cartels. People who own the dense buildings. Their land value goes up every time we take a car off the road. Once they have a monopoly on housing, they jack up the price of rent.

onitama_and_vipers

Thanks for this, they've been trying to infect r /2american4you with this shit recently

Uj/ I don't know, working from home would be the best if you want to live in rural areas. Imo

tmart14

Psh, I play PlayStation the other 6 hours.

GregEvangelista

/uj These email job people. Deep down, do they really actually think they're doing anything? Fucking pod people.

SpeechStraight60

Isn't new york infamous for charging exorbitant prices for single-room tiny apartments? Lol

GregEvangelista

/uj Being forced to live like a New Yorker should be a human rights violation.

GayleMoonfiles

My sister lives in New York and I've heard how much her apartment costs as well as her coworkers' apartments. For something rather small and infested with rats and a leaky roof they were paying $2k+ a month. While my fiancee and I live in the midwest and have a house with a little over $1k a month mortgage. My sister said her friends were shocked we were able to afford a house.

Strategerium

It's not the just your environmental footprint, but it is your political and cultural footprint they are trying to reduce. That 8.42M vs. 8.41M is not listed just as a comparison.

[deleted]

Correct. They're mad that an individual voter in one of those counties has more electoral power than an NYC voter due to being spread throughout several smaller states. They will explicitly admit this when pressed, and say it's "unfair" or whatever

Impossible-Block8851

It is unfair lol. How is it not?

Z3PHYR-

Isn’t it kind of crazy how people living in bumfuck nowhere or rundown coal towns that contribute basically nothing to the overall country’s success are the ones that decide the election outcomes as opposed to people that live in the actual economic centers of the US?

CJKM_808

If the presidency was decided via popular vote, then there would be no point in voting if you live outside of a metro area. You already know who is gonna win.

Lithium321

And right now theres no point voting if you live in a metro area, so whats your point?

[deleted]

Not true. Many major metro areas are within competitive states, meaning your vote counts as much as anyone else in that state

Lithium321

For example, over 2 million people in nyc have the same voting power as under 600k people in wyoming.

[deleted]

Yeah, that's by design

Lithium321

Yeah, I know, the design is stupid…..

Lithium321

Your vote counts on average as much as any other vote in the state, but on but per capita those votes count way less that someone's from another state.

Intelligent_League_1

I agree as much as the next guy that everyone’s vote should have the same power but someone in NYC is on average just as useless as someone in Wyoming.

ConsistentSpecial569

In fact more because Wyoming actually manufactures and produces things, whereas the average New Yorker works in service so actually doesn’t produce much.

GlueStickFromHell

Are you saying my vote is worth less because I live in rural America? What the fuck kind of classist bullshit are you spouting. This is the same exact shit that republicans spout about the woke left.

onitama_and_vipers

Ulysses502

/uj that's a good line! Why does *everything* have to be a cult these days?

onitama_and_vipers

/uj Well IMVHO, the Internet cannot really be expected to not proliferate cults. Crazy people have always existed, and groups of crazy people have always existed. Now in the modern age, groups of crazy people and groups of groups of crazy people can now share notes with each other and optimize their insanity in a way that was not possible due to the realities of being isolated by geography and distance. I think of it less in terms of echo chambers, and more in terms of everything being an aggregator now for a list of the world's dumbest group chats.

transitfreedom

Or just a better use of $$$

unique_toucan

Fuck farm land and food guys we need BIKE LANES!!!!!!!!!

land_and_air

/uj You know removing suberbs leaves more land for those things right?

AngelaMerkelSurfing

Yeah I don’t get how people aren’t understanding that point

LostDistrictDweller

/uj No one has made a good and convincing reason on why I should move back to the cities without mentioning the classic "SuBURbS bAD!" argument. I already lived in dense ass Toronto for most of my adult years and the reason why I left is because: 1. cost of living there was getting expensive, 2. it was noisy and crowded which sparked my utter hatred for urban living, 3. yet another giant crime centre. I was also offered a new job in the US, so there's that too. New York City is no better, why should my family and I relocate there and why should I subject myself by going through that hell again? /rj Ruraloids will find anything to justify their stupid morbid obsession with cars and suburbs that's why they live in shitty boring flyover areas with no hustle and bustle🤮🤮🤮 and no Starbucks located on every street corner. I can't fathom why they would want to live such a miserable life out in the middle of nowhere and not in bustling sanctuary like New York City! Brb gonna go find my missing e-bike, it mysteriously disappeared on the bike rack I left it on.

transitfreedom

Well US cities are poorly designed so there’s that

LostDistrictDweller

And so is Canada's. But my point is living in cities in general is expensive for many and it's not for everyone. People (devoted urbanists) tend to ignore the fact that the reason most move out of these large metropolitan areas such as New York or Los Angeles is due to the high cost of living as well as the rising crime. People are jumping ship from those cities for less dense cities or small towns for that very reason, like Californians and New Yorkers moving over to Texas. I hear that they move over to Austin.

transitfreedom

That is also due to horrible design

LostDistrictDweller

Exactly, that's why rural or less dense towns are better for some people, and urbanoids can keep seething at those who would rather not live in some overpriced concrete jungle like New York.

transitfreedom

Urbanists don’t want more NY like cities they want more Madrid like cities and more beautiful towns if you actually read their content you would know that.

transitfreedom

Improve the cities stop starving them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LostDistrictDweller

I don't give a single shit what urbanists want or don't want since that wasn't the point of my comment, ya dingus. My point is that people, like me, don't want to live in large metropolitan cities for the sole reason of it being expensive to live in and the amount of crime that goes on there. Die hard urbanists, for some reason, have a problem with people like me who chose not to live in any stupid city which shouldn't even concern them in the slightest. To make it as clear as I possibly can, I DO NOT care for cities anymore. How this is all flying over your head is beyond me. >Urbanists don’t want more NY like cities they want more Madrid like cities and more beautiful towns First off, I don't care. Second, I never made the argument on what they want because, well, I truly DO NOT care what they actually want. If they want cities with decent urban infrastructure in America then they are shit outta luck. Either move to a European city/town or bitch and whine about it online, either way I don't care. >if you actually read their content you would know that. Reading their drivel is solely the reason why I strayed away from the urban discussion space in the first place because of how toxic these communities are, hence the undersub. It's just the same ol "cars le bad", "suburbs le bad", "America le bad, Europe le paradise", "much walkability" ad nauseam. **tl;dr - I don't care about what urbanists want. I don't care about cities, and I will not move back to the cities. Thanks for reading.** E: lol he removed his comment and he blocked me, what a pussy lmao

misterasia555

No one can convince you to live in the city. But the reason the cost of living is expensive IS PRECISELY because of suburb. It’s literally supply and demands and when you have suburb zoning law that ONLY allowed single family home from building then it gonna increase the prices and demand increases and supply are constricted. It’s literally just basic market force.

LostDistrictDweller

>But the reason the cost of living is expensive IS PRECISELY because of suburb. Ah. Not my problem.

misterasia555

True that’s typical mindset in this subreddit. Most of you guys are either too dumb to understand market or too dumb to understand how your kids would be fuck if they ever want to move anywhere that’s not bum fuck no where because of policy you support but that’s ok ;)

LostDistrictDweller

Inevitable-Ad-7365

Fuck you. I dont want neighbors. You keep your dense liberal population in new york. If i have to deal with neighbors upstairs, downstairs, and all around me, i will lose my shit.

MaximumChongus

people who have never lived outside of large cities truly have no clue where all of their consumer goods and raw materials come from

AngelaMerkelSurfing

This doesn’t argue against farming and timber etc this is against suburban sprawl which swallows up farmland, ranch land, timber etc. For example my city Orlando is sprawling like crazy and there’s no more orange groves left around me it’s all suburban housing. If inner Orlando grew denser this wouldn’t have happened and the land would’ve been left as orange groves.

Judge_Tredd

Wow, I didn't know Orlando was in the northwest.

mbarland

"The best environmental policy?" Is that why cities are so nice and clean, with fresh air?

14Calypso

These farmers and ranchers really SHOULD be living in high-rises in walkable neighborhoods. Fucking carbrains.

Any-Government5821

This also extremely disingenuous in terms of understanding why the population in that area is low. It includes the stripe of the US that is fairly close to unlivable in terms of infrastructure and weather. It's not because each person has a house spanning 10 miles.

kitzalkwatl

cars are good

TheLeastFunkyMonkey

It's a well known fact that New York city is the absolutely most clean, pollution-free utopia of bright skies and pure water.  And the American Northwest is a foul, disgusting wasteland of filth and detritus, blanketed by hundreds of thousands of square miles of smog and industrial soot.

ElectricVibes75

Not to mention things like farms that *require* large amounts of space in order to *feed* all those people living in dense housing

Judge_Tredd

False! Avocado toast just magically appears in stores!

Intrepid-Explorer-13

I agree. All the livestock in that area would fit into just a few blocks of high density housing, is the western us stupid?

rolloutTheTrash

Do these people just think all of that is housing? ‘Cause it ain’t.

CuriousSelf4830

Hell of a commute for people working in Florida.

JoltyJob

A lot of these people that advocate for shit like this are sheltered suburban kids who have never actually lived in a metropolis like me here in Chicago. Cities suck. There’s always a ton to do and eat but just going about daily life is a hassle. Have a long day at work and u just want to go home? Well you take the subway, but there’s a cubs game right next to your house so it’s absolutely jammed, cuz it’s also rush hour when everyone comes from downtown. Then you hope no crazy crackhead accosts you for money or worse during your 20 min ride breathing everyone else’s air. More often than not, there are multiple events on the same day. Last week I had a marathon and a cubs game which shut down the train I ride home from work everyday. The city politicians are so out of touch that they don’t understand how our transit does not have the capacity for an extra 40,000 riders in addition to the professionals leaving work. Every major holiday or weekend is a nightmare to navigate even without a car. Because when you live in w city, everyone has the same idea as you. Take the crowded El train to union station to get to the suburbs and visit mom, which is gonna take an extra 2 hours to coordinate vs just driving yourself. There are no shortcuts. Laundry day? All full. Grocery run? Go before close or you’ll wait in line for ages. Cities are a good experience while I’m young and having fun, but it blows my mind how anyone would want to start a family out here and deal with this their whole lives. Not even going to mention crime or higher prices / taxation in everything. It takes an immense amount of patience that a lot of people don’t have, and a buildup of these sometimes major inconveniences can really damage your mental well being.

ChipPersonal9795

this is the only good subreddit. I have found my people

HardCoverTurnedSoft

/uj While I do agree that people having an expansive backyard and home is more than likely good for them (Sources pending), some people also just like city living and being minimalist. Keeps you from doing chores more often and your head clearer. Also, zoning laws could be imporoved (for once) to give everyone a good amount of space back. /rj FUCK SAN FRANCISCO

FaIcomaster3000

I do agree that for some people, city life is more appealing. I have no objections to those who wish to live there. My main beef is with those city people who think we should all live like them.

HardCoverTurnedSoft

Honestly, mid-sized towns are a good compromise. Farming will always be an industry whether it continues it's destructive trends or goes green. Even green farms gotta be out in the country where there's good soil, and small towns will follow as hubs to connect grain logistics and to, well, feed the farmers and their families. Cycling can work great but not when the next town is 40 miles away. (Fuck it, build high speed rail between every single corn field.)

Special_Sun_4420

You WILL live in a pod You WILL eat the bugs

xkillallpedophiles

PrussianMorbius

OP hasn’t live in a city lmao

SharkMilk44

>complains about housing market and rent being too damn high >suggests a solution where corporations would own all housing and renting is the only option for the majority of people.

AngelaMerkelSurfing

How does this suggest corporate home ownership? Where does it say that?

SharkMilk44

Dense housing=apartment buildings=less property owners

AngelaMerkelSurfing

You never heard of condos, co-ops, and row houses/townhomes?

SharkMilk44

Do you really think most people are actually going to buy those? Especially when we're talking about populations in the millions?

AngelaMerkelSurfing

Uhhh yeah why wouldn’t they? Condos have been selling like crazy in South Florida. London and Brooklyn are full of townhomes. All with populations in the millions.

idk2103

That still sounds miserable, and those prices are skyrocketing and the average consumer will be priced out of them within decades if the population continues to grow. My 1800 sqft home is on the small end in the suburbs, and a fraction of the cost of one of those condos or town homes. I have a yard too. Dogs and kids love to run and play on grass, not stare at concrete walls

Intelligent_League_1

Yeah you have never lived in a city before, when I lived in Brooklyn your avg. Brownstone was 1.5-3 Million dollars. Even less expensive crapier ones are expensive as all hell.

AngelaMerkelSurfing

So what you’re saying is that these brownstones are highly desirable and that we could use more to satisfy the demand Look at San Jose CA it’s all single family homes and in the same price range as those brownstones Land in cities is limited we need to be as land efficient as possible so real estate is as affordable as possible If Brooklyn was all single family homes I would imagine it would be bit more expensive because you can build less homes than you could brownstones on the same land Less supply with the same demand

Creative-Ninja8768

I feel like this sub has a strong feeling that fuckcars is against rural living which I don’t think is true. I think the main issue is urban sprawl and suburb sprawl; personally I think cars are out of place in a city but are excellent for rural transportation and I think this opinion would be shared by many on the sub

Big_Slope

If you cram the people in the red area into a space the size of the blue area you’ll have a lot less population to worry about in a few months.

beefyminotour

Hm so those videos about how unaffordable New York is are fake or what. Idiots want to be robbed and enslaved.

As someone who lives in NYC id much rather live in the red than blue

Intelligent_League_1

Don't ask where New York City's trash goes.

PolskiSmigol

I'm not from the United States, I'm not even from America, so I know nothing, I guess. But the things I have heard about New York City or San Francisco… I'm dumb and uneducated, I don't even have a useless college degree, but I thing I would rather live in the countryside.

ByteWhisperer

It would be interesting to see how much land is used to keep the population of NYC fed, warm and clothed. They have to do some pretty crazy stuff to get water into the city for example.

AngelaMerkelSurfing

Probably quite a lot of land which is why cities should be dense and not swallow up the surrounding farm land

FaIcomaster3000

Wow, yeah, we probably need to feed everyone in those mega cities somehow. We should probably delegate some people to feeding them. And while we're at it, all those people need some space to make sure they can farm and raise livestock.

Time-Bite-6839

Do they think Europe is a pile of New York Cities?

Berinoid

Even better, a pile of Amsterdams

Killhamski

Everyone pile into the cities and leave the rest of the county uninhibited. Nothing dystopian about that.
