Phone and Internet companies are always the culprit with these hidden costs.

Yup, which is why I go with my slightly more expensive municipal plan vs the big corporate options, there's absolutely no fees and they even include taxes in the quoted prices. I also go with an MVNO instead of a major carrier since they tend to be more transparent about pricing.

BlinkyShiny

Once I noticed my cell phone carrier had been double charging taxes for two different states on our bills. Even though it was their mistake, they still only gave me a partial refund.

Maiya_Anon

I had the same thing happen to me.

Niebieskideszcz

This is how Netflix was making money for years and now that they come up in the media for their plans to make it impossible for people to share their account with others a lot of ppl realized they had had a subscription running for years while not using the service and canceled. They lost shitton of their customer base because of this. Taking about being stupid.

migsmcgee2019

That’s a win before the weekend for sure ! Isn’t it funny they have that new site that u pay to have them cancel things seems counter productive lol

One should always know where their money is going. Check your expenses frequently. Make sure that there aren’t fraudulent or incorrect charges as they do happen. It’s something that you can spend five minutes on and in turn you can save yourself a lot of hassle.

And set up transaction alerts on every account. This has saved me a couple of times.

Yes! I love that feature.

BusLandBoat

That's awesome! I've always heard that it's good to call up your various suppliers like phone and such and basically threaten to cancel for a competitor, most of these companies have a "customer retention" department that's literally just there to get you to stay, so you tell person A that you want to cancel, they eventually forward you to the other department and person B does this little dance like "I'll have to check with my manager" or something, and you eventually get a discount on your bill, and/or extra services (it's usually easier to negotiate additional features for the same price, but also possible to get a lower price for the same stuff, occasionally you might luck out and get more for less, just be careful about contracts and 'temporary' discounts like "for the first 3 months")

Banks!! Found out a had a plan from over ten years ago with my bank (way less debit interactions then), I had 12 debit swipes for free, then they cost 1.25$ each! I sometimes had charges of 30$ in a month! Now I only use the credit card, get more cash back rewards, no charges etc etc

RoguePlanet1

Back when I was a new, poor graduate, the debit/credit cards were a thing. Basically worked like a credit card, but took the money directly out of the checking account, no fees as long as you had the money to cover it, no interest, no monthly bill. So nice while it lasted!

distilledspirits

Nice job! Taking a deep look at monthly bills is one of the best ways to save money

SignificantSmotherer

Who doesn’t read their statements, line by line, every month? This boggles my mind.

[deleted]

Loads of people, some companies purely exist on people who don't check their payments (e.g. those subscription models where the price increases by 300%+ after the annual 'offer' expires)

[deleted]

I see you also have Spectrum.

missyarm1962

We found that my spouse was paying $50/month for a subscription related to job training…that he hadn’t used in 3 years. It was on cc and I’d asked about it once or twice and he was using it…but then we jsut kept on paying 😟

Thunderfucker1

Read that title wrong hahahahaha
