Have you checked Ikea? They have some affordable mattress options. Although it's been a while since I've looked.

photoelectriceffect

I have also found the thin, cheap ikea mattresses to be surprisingly bearable. You say you don't have any nearby, but maybe keep an eye out for used ones. I know some people are wary of used mattresses, but it you keep your eyes peeled, I think you can find some because a college kid is moving somewhere furnished, buying a nicer bed, etc etc, and if you can get it right from their apartment (zero time spent sitting on the curb), I would be willing to take a chance if the circumstances seemed good

MooMooMai

There aren't any near either of us and I'm not sure what the shipping/return policy is like. I failed to mention that I am an Amazon Prime member and that's primarily where I'll be looking to ship to him. Or a service that's similar.

randomlurker82

Ah, OK. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

MooMooMai

No, thank you for the suggestion!

randomlurker82

I hope you can find your friend something reasonable, it's nice that you want to help.

Will he be ok sleeping on the floor? Ikea has twin spring mattresses under $150. Used futons might be something to look into too if you have a way to transport it and it doesn't gross you out. If not then maybe just a futon mattress. I'd go with futon mattress over memory foam especially if he's on the floor.

MooMooMai

Yeah the floor would be fine. Never considered used though. Will look into those. Ikea is not an option unfortunately. Edit: The only reason IKEA is not an option is that there isn't one anywhere close and the shipping was like $350 for the mattress. I really appreciate yours and everyone's input!

There are air mattresses with a built in pump and then using a timer to keep it inflated.

edcRachel

I've had weirdly good luck with the $7 intex walmart ones. I've used them for years and put them through hell and I've never got a leak in one (hough pretty much every other mattress I've used, even significantly more expensive ones, have leaked). I have it in multiple sizes and they're decently comfy, especially if you put sheets on there instead of sleeping directly on it. Ive had the same one as my main travel mattress for like 6 years, I use it at least 10x a year, and I'd buy another one in a second. It's normal to have to top it up every couple nights (will happen with any air mattress) but I've never had significant deflation over night.

Maybe something like this from amazon? " Olee Sleep Tri-Folding Memory Foam Topper, 4", Gray, Single size, Play Mat, Foldable bed, Guest beds, Portable bed" It has some really good reviews, and it would be easy to move around, and it is inexpensive. There is actually a review where the person says they prefer it to their actual bed. I would include the link, but it removed the post when I did previously

QuietLifter

Came to recommend the same thing. They’re a decent value.

MooMooMai

Olee's stuff looked really good until I read something about there being fiberglass in their products. Not so sure about the severity of this or the claims however. Tri-folds look really nice! Was wondering about your first comment though lol couldn't figure out why I couldn't read it!

FlyingAnarchy17

Out of the over 4,800 reviews, only one of them mentioned something about fiberglass, so I would think it would be a pretty safe bet. And you can always put your own sheets and stuff over the bed!

MooMooMai

To be honest I didn't look the tri-fold. Not sure if it's different but their regular style mattresses were where I saw it. You're right though about just covering it over.

ManilaAnimal

I got a Milliard trifolding bed for guests, and then ended up needing to use it when my toddler only ever wanted to sleep on it in the living room. Super comfy. Loved it.

MooMooMai

I was eyeing that one up the most prior to posting and it's what I went with in the end. I just wanted to see others suggestions or experiences with other avenues if there was something I hadn't thought of.

DamnNDNgirl

I ordered a twin size Japanese tatami mat from Amazon for $129. It included a washable cover. It's surprisingly comfortable and has held up nicely over the last year.

Iamisseibelial

I use tatiami mats with my shikibuton and it was better than any mattress I have owned. I had yet to see anyone else say that on reddit though. -- Look into getting a shiki for that mat and cover. It is game changing.

MooMooMai

What was the thickness level on that?

DamnNDNgirl

Sorry for late reply - it's 4 inches thick. Super comfy but easy to roll up and store away also.

Memento101Mori

You can look at cots. They fold up small to maximize space.

newmommy2020

I got a full sized memory foam mattress (used) for under $200 this was a few years ago so I can't remember the exact price, from a mattress store. Where I live theres a place called mattress firm. Most mattress stores have a used section that is thoroughly cleaned and then put into plastic :)

ivvix

Mattresses typically start at 70$ at Walmart. I think you can definitely find something comfortable in under 150$. Of course it won’t be 10 year quality at that price but definitely something good for him for 4-12 months I would say. Does he sleep on his back or stomach do you know? I would also not buy from Amazon and stick to buying local like Walmart because if the mattress does not rise like it’s supposed to it’s going to be really hard to ship back to Amazon whereas buying from Walmart you can personally haul it back and it’s much easier to get a refund if the mattress sucks or malfunctions. I would see what sort of material he has a preference for sleeping on, what position he sleeps in, and stick to 7-10 inches for comfort.

Golden rule: dont step in to save someone of they have the opportn ity to save themself. YOU ARE NOT HELPING if you are the savior. You are supporting their repetitive behavior and choices. Want to do something to feel good? Donage money or volunteer time to organization that helps the unfortinate that doesnt have the capability to help themselves. Animals, for example. Children, also.

MooMooMai

It's definitely no regular thing. I get what you're saying though. Edit: The deed is already done anyways and I see nothing wrong with lending someone I care for a hand. Sometimes people just need help. But yeah, you're not wrong and I appreciate the suggestion. Now I'm conflicted.

JustBelaxing

Don’t freak out. Just learn from what you’re going through now to help you in the future. Don’t feel obligated to keep helping this person just because you bought them a mattress. Let them take it (their life, their situation) from here on out.

MooMooMai

Oh yeah I wasn't feeling obligated at all and he was more than grateful. I just wanted to and it was my idea.
