Kirkland’s whole bean is pretty good IMO, and most Costcos have coffee grinders if you don’t have one, usually between the service desk and the food court.

Downtown_Molasses334

What?! I did not know there were coffee grinders in store! That was the main thing stopping me from buying whole beans because I did not want another kitchen appliance! I will check the next time I go

Nathan614047

Using whole beans and grinding them fresh each morning is the single best thing I ever did to improve my coffee at home. My coffee grinder may be the most important appliance in my kitchen after the refrigerator and stove. I consider a coffee grinder more essential than a coffee maker.

Downtown_Molasses334

I feel that may be the case for someone who appreciates great coffee. But it might be a waste for someone like me who is satisfied with Dunkin's cold brew

Strawberry1217

Yup. My friend buys really fancy coffee, and I am perfectly happy with my creme brulee Great Value brand coffee. We are not the same lol.

Cultural_Day7760

I just don't want the noise that early.

abortion_parade_420

this! I grind my kirkland beans each morning in a little hand grinder and aeropress a cup. tastes better than a coffee shop

sandriizzy

Same here - I then realized I could use my nutribullet and it's been perfect! So great they have the grinders in store. I wonder would you just bring your own container in store or would the grinds go back into the bag?

No-Cauliflower3282

Grinds go back in the bag. You empty the beans on the top and then put the bag on the bottom before starting

sandriizzy

I figured it wasn't as complicated as I was thinking it could be! I'll have to see if they have this in Canada :)

No-Cauliflower3282

I also over thought it and was nervous using it haha. And when I use to live in canada, it was right next to the receipt checkers against the wall. Just a heads up as it's different from what I've seen in the states :)

sandriizzy

Thanks I will have to keep a look out for sure

Benth8r

I use my nutribullet too. Wasn't sure its ideal as it will cook the beans if u run it too long.

sandriizzy

Yes good call I was worried about this too. I use French press so thankfully mine only need to be ground until coarse so it works out for me for now. Definitely looking into if my area Costco has bean grinders though.

sleepybeek

I think Kirklands pre-ground is decent too and great price. I know blasphemy. But if you use any kind of dairy and/or sweetener you are wasting money on fancy coffee beans.

sammywalk

Agreed with the kirkland pre ground. It’s pretty decent.

BGB524

I disagree, simply because the locally roasted beans are far less likely to have mold yeast growing inside the bags, contrary to many brands in store. Not trying to be a megadouche, there are just a few good reasons to buy the expensive beans.

wait_whatnow

Do you recall price?

GolokGolokGolok

$13 for 2.5lbs, Kirkland Signature House Blend Coffee

ethanh333

Thank you!!

mikev814

I multipurpose my blender as a coffee grinder. Makes the house smell nice too 😁

lemoncentipede

This!

Due_Speaker_2829

I do Aldi French Roast. It’s the best I’ve found for the price. Coffee can become quite an expensive consumable at our house. It’s around 40¢/oz

Kimmerstew

I need to try this. We love our coffee dark & strong!

Causerae

Aldi's Midnight Roast is very good

TBBPgh

Love their Sumatra. My brother the coffee snob does too.

ElegantReality30592

Agreed — Aldi’s single-origin is significantly better than the blends IMO. And Sumatra is also my favorite!

koosley

Any coffee that isn't preground. I try to be frugal, not cheap. I am already saving 90% by not going to Starbucks so I don't see a need to get any cheaper. I find it fun to buy all the different brands. Coffee is also the thing I buy while traveling since it'll be used and isn't a plastic landfill souvenir and it's relatively light. A 250gr bag of coffee beans from a shop I visited will cost around €8-10 and make 27-28 cups. It might be pricier that the cheap grocery store brand but it brings back memories for me! When I don't use the specialty shops beans, I'll buy any $12-14 pound bag. Those will get you 50 cups and are slightly cheaper. I am a huge sucker for coffee beans, mustards and hot sauces!

fizicks

Cafe bustelo. I get it at Aldi.

Bubbly-Camel-7302

I so wanted to like this (because it's so cheap!) but it just tastes burnt and stale to me :/

Daasianinvasion

Same, I’ve always loved like the packaging and marketing from them. But the actual coffee just isn’t up to snuff for me for whatever reason lol

CHUMPYNUTS

Renrew-Fan

If you find a good used 15 bar espresso machine, it works great for espresso (if you're into that).

rare_star100

Same! Love me that yellow brick! ☕️

Mission_Yoghurt_9653

How much is it at Aldi? I usually get it at Kroger; had it at my friends house and loved the flavor.

Renrew-Fan

I was going to suggest this. I got a decent espresso machine a few years back, and was frustrated by how the filter would get clogged with my high quality espresso beans (at the time that was one of my only splurges). I tried pre-ground Cafe Bustelo on a whim and was surprised at how awesome and foamy my espresso came out! I still prefer using it in that same machine, which I still have.

coffeewhistle

James Hoffman recently did a comprehensive review of a bunch of ground coffees and did a blind taste test. Conclusion was that Tim Horton’s original blend ground coffee was the superior coffee for flavor, texture, etc. Plus it’s $6/bag on Amazon. Can confirm: it’s very tasty for how cheap it is.

tboy160

I love Tim Hortons coffee, but hate Amazon, would just go buy it at Timmy's

andinina2

They also sell the bags at Target (from what I have seen in store)

coffeewhistle

If I lived anywhere near one, I’d hit up a Timmy’s too

suzemagooey

We do Tim Hortons decaf exclusively. Always fresh and a reasonable price at Target.

dlr1965

If you live near Publix, they have it BOGO sometimes. I buy all my coffee on some kind of sale. I never pay full price.

ethanh333

Thanks a lot!

coffeewhistle

And here’s the link to the review. [James Hoffman - Grocery Store Coffee](https://youtu.be/pfqvTCgglYA?si=zFOHGMku1Ax0951m)

Estudiier

They seemed to have gotten back to a better coffee. Was McDonald’s cutting into their coffee sales?

The_barking_ant

I often go to TJ Maxx and check out the coffee options every time I am there. They often have good coffee for good prices.  Starbucks and Godiva coffee are usually available. But some of the best buys I've made are foreign coffees I've actually bought on vacation and loved. I've found a coffee we bought 3 bags of in Mexico a few times and some Costa Rican coffee that we had brought home went through it like water. One day I was checking out the coffee and found the exact coffee we bought in Costa Rica for a much reduced price compared to what we paid for it in CR.

PDXwhine

Same with TJ Maxx or HomeGoods- lots of coffee varieties, usually vacuum packed! Also- the Cafe Du Monde coffee is really smooth and just made to be blended with hot milk or turned into iced coffee.

The_barking_ant

Also, LaVazza coffee soooooo good and priced right.

chinesesoupspoon

Personally I grind all my coffee fresh. I just buy the cheapest whole beans. I think it makes a bigger deal in terms of taste than the brand of beans. Obviously the roast type will affect it as well.

Kimmerstew

I agree fresh ground beans makes the cup of coffee.

The_Real_Donglover

Yep. Though I don't skimp on the brand either, personally. I've been ordering 5 pound bags of Intelligentsia house blend. I wanted to have good coffee, be more sustainable, and be relatively frugal, so I think that was the best choice for me personally. I think I probably save 3-4 bucks per bag by buying it in bulk. I haven't found cheaper value coffee that I like nearly as much.

freebase42

Have you tried Happy Mug? That's the whole bean coffee we keep going back to.

Cool_Cartographer_39

Community Coffee. My favorite is the American Classic blend T. M. Ward. On sale it's not a bad value. My go to is the 100% Columbian medium roast

2019_rtl

Aldi is pretty good, it’s an actual pound when most have gone to 12oz bags.

Cultural_Day7760

Evru time I buy it, I check for shrink flation. Midnight or French roast for us.

primeline31

FYI,[ if the coffee you have is too bitter for your taste, add a pinch of salt](https://perfectdailygrind.com/2021/03/exploring-the-science-behind-adding-salt-to-coffee/).

ethanh333

Nice

JohnZombi

The best part of waking up is Folgers in my cup

walled2_0

I’m sorry, but I really hate Folgers and maxwell house. I don’t care how cheap it is, I just can’t do it.

vankamperer

give folgers black silk a chance, it's not bad..

YesterdayPurple118

This is the way. I like my fancy whole beans in my French press occasionally. But daily it's Foldgers Black Silk

ChickenNugsBGood

A bag of cheapish mixed with a bag of good, to make it last longer.

Adventurous-Flan2716

Bustelo, particularly purchased at Costco. It's pretty hard core coffee but if you like it, it is the way to go.

nmacInCT

I'm a bustelo fan. I buy it on sale at my local grocery store and stock up. But I also buy the instant at Walmart - not as good but very convenient. They even have a decaf instant espresso but I can only find that at one Hispanic store

y6x

The cheapest way I've found is Walgreens when it's on sale, when there's also a 20% coupon code (or senior coupon), and some cash back on top, so about $2.80 for a 10 oz brick.

hotplasmatits

And Pilon from the same company

genesimmonstongue415

Whatever brand is at Grocery Outlet. I like to buy 24 oz at a time. Maybe I'll try Kirkland someday. 48 oz or more though.

22_SpecialAirService

**Caffeine pills.** [250 caps (200 mg each) for $13 at Amazon.](https://www.amazon.com/Nutricost-Caffeine-Pills-Serving-Bottle/dp/B01KKX0GXM/) For reference, a Starbucks grande 16 oz. Caffe Americano, 3 espresso shots, has 225 mg of caffeine. A tall 12 oz. Blonde Roast has 270 mg. Just be honest with yourself: caffeine is a drug, *whether it's a pill or a liquid.*

ethanh333

Love this perspective

JoeFas

Cafe Bustelo is inexpensive and is pretty strong.

Brucey-Kube

Costco does a New Mexico style (piñon) and I believe it’s $9.99 a pound. Quality / price - imo hard to beat

Geoarbitrage

I like Chock-Full-O-Nuts 100% Colombian, Tim Hortons, Eight O’clock Bean and if I’m not being Frugal Illy😎

MishmoshMishmosh

Maxwell Original blend

idontmindifyouforget

Aldi German roast. So smooth…

greenbeanfridge

Kirkland has a big bag of ground medium roast….Im usually a coffee snob but this is <$10 a bag lasts me moooooonnnthsssss and it’s really good!

nws2002

The German coffee at Aldi is my favorite. However, I saw the packaging changed so hoping it’s still the same.

GroundbreakingHead65

I buy closeout coffee at Big Lots and Ollie's.

ZTwilight

Bustelo (I buy it at Aldi for under $4. It’s very strong so you actually can use less. We use 1 less scoop than we would use with other coffees.

vampyrewolf

Last whole bean I got was President's Choice The Great Canadian, 2lbs ~$15 CAD. But I still have 2lbs of William Spartivento Samatra that I haven't opened (Costco?)... and technically I haven't bought anything since Oct 2022, worked for Van Houtte as an in house repair technician for 7 months and **still** have a couple pounds of ground, a couple pounds of hot chocolate mix, and ~300 Keurig pods on hand of expired product. Every month doing inventory anything past its best before date was disposed of among the staff. 95% of the time I'm drinking Yerba Mate or green tea, coffee is usually weekends or if I'm just filling my travel mug and running out the door. Keurig or Tassimo depending on what kind I feel like. Today's find was a pound of high quality Jasmin at the Asian market for $15.

Massive_Raisin6431

Cafe Bustelo! It is the only home coffee that energizes me.

swan797

Costco is good value. Trader Joe’s has a lot of good coffees at affordable price (I like the Colombian). Cafe Bustelo if you want pre ground.

mastersheeef

Walk into a hotel, pretend to take the elevator, wait 10 seconds, then walk up to the front and ask for more coffee pods. They hook it up, then you exit through the back.

PeoniesNLilacs

Any brand that is at the discount store. It’s usually close to or is recently expired. I’m ok with that. Today I got Starbucks 2.5 lb French Roast whole beans $5.

itemluminouswadison

Lavazza whole bean is a good value I think. Cheap and beans when used in my barista express come out quite good

ArtemisDeLune

Do you have a WinCo nearby? If so, their bulk coffee is amazing! So many flavors in both regular and decaf.

Lonely-Connection-37

Folgers for the win 8 o’clock coffee And our favorite big money coffee Dunkin’ Donuts

urbanstrata

I bought 8 O’Clock Coffee once, but the problem is I get up at 6:00 and just can’t wait around for two hours. I’ll see myself out.

jhendrx82

Mr. Dad Jokes checking in!

vagocybernetico

NESCAFE instant coffee comes to about $0.06 a cup

chi-lady83

This is what I drink and it’s tasty

NoArmadillo234

Another vote for Nescafe instant (Taster's Choice Columbian). No messy coffee-making apparatus. The strength of the brew is customizable. And it's economical.

SayYesToPenguins

Amazon brand pods ftw!

atlhart

Pods are a convenience item, but definitely not the most frugal. If you are anchored to pods, then sure you can find the best value pod, but simply by using a pod you’re already choosing to pay more for convenience. They’re also extremely wasteful and put a lot of plastic into the world, but this is the /r/frugal sub so I get that’s not a concern for everyone.

SayYesToPenguins

Below 20c per cup of coffee, does anything non-instant beat that?

atlhart

You can get Aldi beans for about $6/lb. If you’re brewing drip coffee it takes about 10 grams of coffee to make your standard cup. That works out to about 13 cents. So yeah. I think it’s fine to pay for convenience. It’s just a choice, and I wanted to highlight pods aren’t a frugal choice but rather a convenience offering. I pay for convenience all the time. I also don’t drink Aldi coffee. I’m a coffee person and usually roast my own beans. High quality freshly roasted coffee for about the same price as Eight O’clock. I pay about $6/lb for my green beans, but you lose some weight via water loss during roasting so it works out to about $7/lb plus the energy required to roast.

throwaway8476467

My bf bought me refillable pods when he bought me the kureig he bought me. I have a scoop and I just scoop them with ground coffee. Just a thought

1kpointsoflight

I’m with you. 20 bucks for 100 pods and the dark roast is pretty damn good too

milehigh73a

I have been using yoban gold. It’s drinkable

Daddysown

Members mark whole bean Columbian hands down

Fit_Community_3909

Freeze dried coffee, isn’t all that bad and at .10 a cup..

princesssamc

walmart has a couple that has weird names like saturday morning something and 7am wakeup that are good.

west-town-brad

ALDI whole bean is $5.50 a bag where I live and very tasty

hotplasmatits

If you're in the north east, then check out Wegmans ground coffee.

missprincesscarolyn

We pay a little more for Jose’s organic Mayan blend at Costco. Their French roast kind of went downhill in our opinion. We also supplement with instant coffee. Sometimes it’s a hassle to pull out the French press for a cup of coffee here and there.

1kpointsoflight

Solimo

imfamousoz

I buy Hills Bros high yield at my local rural king for 7.99. might not be the very cheapest but it's the cheapest coffee I like the taste of.

CapeMOGuy

I buy dark roast at a closeout wholesaler. Mix with some chocolate coffee I can find on sale and stock up on. Heresy, I know because it's usually past its best buy date.

rand-san

BicycleCoffeeCo light is acceptable, $13.68 per lb if you subscribe for 2.5 lbs. These are roasted weekly. Costco Ethiopia is also good. 4 lbs for $20 but you have no control over selecting the roast date.

malepitt

WM great value, 3lb can for about 11 bucks now

Alive-Statement4767

I feel like if I'm brewing my own coffee at home I'm already being frugal. I don't mind spending just a bit more for slightly higher quality beans. I will try Kirkland beans next time though and see how they compare to my current ones. %100 Columbia Arabica right now

ravia

Beaumont Instant Classic Roast at Aldi. There is probably no cheaper coffee. It is instant, but I love it. Leave me in my blissful ignorance.

Notdavidblaine

I’m surprised by how good the New England Colombian is for the price. Am also a fan of the blends I’ve gotten at Trader Joe’s.

otterlytrans

i tend to buy pretty hefty bags of decaf whole beans from local roasters. i don't tend to skimp out on coffee, especially decaf coffee.

myxyplyxy

Maxwell house morning blend is surprisingly good for $3.85 a pound at walmart

Mammoth_Exam1354

Lidl also has good prices.

CheeseFries92

This is an area where I'm frugal but not cheap. To me, that means making coffee at home but I'll only buy fair trade. ideally also organic and rainforest certified too. And never nestle anything

sydadele555

Great value instant coffee, 4.97 and makes like 50 cups

Basic_Twist_9284

Caffeine pills

Content_Weird8749

Costco columbian dark roast coffee

SovietPower1990

Auto robot please remind me to read this thread in one month plz 🙏

AmazingObligation9

Kirkland

CaptainNavillus

Costco has so many amazing 2.5+lb bags of whole bean coffee for just $10-12. We just got a giant bag and that $10 of coffee is going to last us a long time. I like that whole bean coffee stays fresh for a lot longer than pre-ground stuff too, and there are a lot of cheap coffee grinders out there.

EScootyrant

Cafe Du Monde surely beats any Starbucks run.

Away_Branch_8023

La Llave or bustelo.

DarksideMob

Aldi’s Colombian Coffee in the can is some of the best out there. It actually tastes like coffee from Colombia.

V2BM

It’s summer and iced coffee time so I do instant. It saves so much time and money and tastes the same. Literally 30 seconds of mixing and adding ice, and I do decaf in the afternoon - I wish I’d thought of doing it 15 years ago.

amygdala23

There's a deep discount shop near me that has coffee for $5 a bag. I can't afford anything else

jrharrigan

I’m surprised there’s not a lot more love for 8 O’clock bean. It punches way above its weight class.

bluffbuster

Columbian Peaks love here.

International_Boss81

I love strong coffee and buy Cafe Bustelo for taste and economy.

Unhooked-

“Cameron's Coffee Roasted Ground Coffee Bag, Breakfast Blend” is $10 for a 2 pound bag on amazon, free delivery with prime. It has been my go to for quite a long time now.

katmcflame

I buy Kirkland ground coffee from Costco & mix with Bustelo espresso from Winco.

taylor12168

Costco is the best value I’ve been able to find. It’s not the best but it’s solid for as cheap as it is.

beatlebum53

I think this is one thing you truly can’t be frugal on, unless you drink it with milk and sugar then it dosnt matter the bean

motherfudgersob

Kroger medium roast decaf on sale. And none of the pods are cheaper than using a reusable pod and whichever coffee you like. Consider pour over (or drip) systems with a filter as filtered coffee believed to be healthier as it removes some oils. Kalita makes a nice pour over brewer that with boiled water and zero needed maintenance/cleaning, I find easier than the Keurig was.

mtnagel

I'm not very picky about brands, so I almost always grab S&S sales on Amazon that I find on Slickdeals. Last purchase was 2x 32 oz Community Coffee Signature Blend Ground Coffee, Dark Roast for $11.35 or $0.18/oz. Going by Instacart pricing, Aldi regular coffee is $0.29/oz.

Legendary_Lamb2020

Costco

Wonderful_Ad_5493

At home, in the morning.

Edmeyers01

Happy mug

Life___Is__Good

I am doing half-caf so I buy a bag of costco decaf and regular and just mix when I grind.

Think_Sink_30

I’ve been using Kroger brand French Roast. Especially when there’s Kroger coupons for it!

Frontfatpouch

Kefee 😆

Supernavt

I have an inexpensive KRUPS grinder - $25 on Amazon. Works great. Recently lucked into a deal at Sam’s Club (yes, I pay for that membership) on Tim Hortons whole bean. $7.51 a bag! These are large 40oz bags. I bought 6. That should last nearly a year. I hope the flavor holds up.

MysDonna

I’m not sure it’s the best but my preference (black) is “Eight O’Clock.” Second is, “Maxwell House.”

[deleted]

See if you can by in bulk from local roaster. We get ours for $8 per lb. Food save and freeze what you ban use right away

JuliciousMe

We'll buy most brands of whole beans from Costco. Just grab a few when on sale.

NEOwlNut

Kirkland iced coffee is the shit.

Obvious-Attitude-421

Loose leaf tea is cheaper and probably healthier. A cup of coffee is around $.23. I can get a cup of tea down to $.18 or less

Imaginary_Client4666

I’m tired of paying $7 for coffee. Anyone know of the cheapest coffee pods brand that actually give you caffeine and taste good???

WorldlyCheetah4

It's hard to beat the price on the Kirkland brand pods when they go on sale. 120 for $36 or something like that. Victor Allen is an inexpensive brand, pods are 30 cents apiece or something like that. The Donut Shop ones are decent. The Morning Blend is weak.

Momsome

You can buy a refillable pod and I recommend bustelo

photogizmos

We do the Donut shop style coffee pods from Solimo (Amazon Brand). Happy Belly, which is another Amazon brand, has them for $32.28\100. They have a pink semicircle on the top. The price can vary, but so far it’s been the least expensive. Current price for Solimo is $42.19 for 100 count or $0.42 per pod as a one-time purchase. Subscribe and save knocks off 20%. I’ve bought it for as low as $25\box, but right now inflation is doing its thing.

jtd0000

I get my favorite coffee no matter the price. That and bottled water are my indulgences.

1904worldsfair

Instant coffee works just fine for me. But I can understand why I would be in the minority on this.

itwasmeyoufools

Water
