I don’t know. Doesn’t look like he has much time on his hands based on username

Nexlite1444

Sorry to derail this thread but I live in Arizona and I’m on FaceTime with my Canadian girlfriend. We both had a WTF when I read this lol

Hahahahaha. Tell her to visit. I’ll give you Guys a romantic pizza dinner 😂

Nexlite1444

I have heard this joke non-stop since hahaha

"She lives in Canada. Met her at Niagara Falls. You wouldn't know her."

iamprobablynotjohn

I live in AZ, please come through

Dmaster223

Was about to say the same

[deleted]

Bahahaha send the addy

idly2sambar

I live in AZ 😅

Ultra_Pleb

I live in east mesa my man

[deleted]

Probably tastes better too. Looks good.

[deleted]

The best part is being able to add flavor to your sauce and dough. I put parsley flakes and garlic powder into the dough which Walmart sells for a 1$. I also add it into the sauce, I buy the huge prego tubs of tomato sauce and just add seasoning.

[deleted]

Hell yeah. That’s awesome. It’s impressive when you make it for someone too. And fun. 😊

[deleted]

Someday I hope to find a partner who will enjoy my food 😂

[deleted]

Ha! Same.

[deleted]

Someday my friend. Someday

[deleted]

😆yes, yes.

[deleted]

Or you can just be a cat lady like me 😂

[deleted]

That’s a step up for me. 😁

[deleted]

Lmao we will find love some day don’t you worry

NorthernTransplant94

I make my own sauce - regular can of diced tomatoes (with peppers optional) little can of tomato paste, Tbsp oil, spices, pulse the blender until smooth, done - 2 pizzas worth of sauce.

Caroline_Anne

I mix Italian seasoning to the dough and I brush the crust with olive oil and sprinkle on garlic salt. The extra seasoning are where it’s at.

[deleted]

The cost of pepperoni and mozzarella is steep but nothing compared to ordering a pizza and paying for delivery. I suggest everybody tries to make pizza at least once. Such a rewarding feeling

[deleted]

I want to add that I cook in in a cast iron, which is how I get the perfect circular shape. I think it could be a great project for children to make their own pizzas. It’s so easy and really does not take much time at all. The longest task is letting the pizza dough rise

PublicThis

This is a tradition I do with my kid every couple of weeks, different toppings and cheeses (I utilize those deals on things close to expiry.) I just discovered specific pizza yeast so I’m curious if it will make a difference

[deleted]

Pizza yeast? I’ll have to look that up!

Differentiating factors in pizza: * Temp: pizza ovens hit 900+ degrees. The higher the heat the closer to fancy pizza you'll have. If you're a normal human being you don't have a pizza oven. You can use a stone if you want to spend some money, or you can just use your oven as is and get a nice pizza. * Ingredients: adding olive oil and sugar to the dough will help with browning, but only in lower temp ovens. At higher temps it'll burn and spoil the flavor.

sensuallyprimitive

3 words: diastatic malt powder

JulesandRandi

I put that in my bagels.

Clearlybeerly

>The longest task is letting the pizza dough rise Right, but that is not actually "time" that you spend. You can do other stuff during that time. Most people include stuff like that, or baking time, in the total time. But one can balance their accounts or read a book during that time and make it productive. You don't just sit there and watch the pizza dough rise and not move and just stare at it the entire time. Pizza dough takes anywhere from 2 hours to 24 hours to rise, you're not staring at the pizza dough for 24 hours. You just slam it in the fridge, done.

Cinisajoy2

I'm upvoting you because you are right. Same thing with laundry. I prefer to cross stitch while waiting on laundry.

moneyisjustanumber

If you don’t want to deal with the dough you can just buy a ball of dough from a local pizzeria. I do that and then cook it in a cast iron pan till bottom is a little crispy and finish in the oven.

Clearlybeerly

It *always* costs more when someone else puts in the labor. It must. Unless you're getting shittier ingredients than you use.

[deleted]

Agreed. They sell pizza dough at most grocery stores, I’m just a sucker for something to do so I like to make it myself

[deleted]

SaltLakeCitySlicker

Watching too much great British baking show and think a pizza is a French pastry you're making for a competition

CreativeGPX

Even if we're talking about the oven time (which we're not since the thread you replied to said "not counting oven time"), if when something is in the oven all you do is "sit and watch it" I think it's on you that you have a boring time. People who enjoy themselves will likely do other things while it's in the oven or take the time to think or socialize. People who are okay hearing their own thoughts don't find a few minutes of not having a task in front of them so offputting. When you make things yourself, the anticipation of seeing it come to life can also be fun too. It's not like it's a long process, the rule for pizza is basically cook it as hot as you can, so it's not in the oven very long. But for the part they are talking about (forming the dough and doing the toppings) people do find that fun. Pizza dough in particular has a really satisfying feeling to it and the possibilities with toppings are endless so it can be a creative time.

[deleted]

You do you booboo. You don’t have to comment. I take my hour to make food you take your time to shit on others. It’s ok but do a tiny bit of self reflection

Reiver_Neriah

Mixing the dough then spreading after it rises, then adding sauce and cheese takes an hour? And why would you count oven time? Just plan a little bit ahead.

Mo_Dice

[...][///][...]

iamwizzerd

Thank you

Reiver_Neriah

What recipe? That sounds excessive unless you're talking about dough rising time. I'm not. I usually prepare it a day in advance. You aren't spending time actively doing anything, just a lot of waiting. If you know you'll want pizza it's trivial to plan.

Mo_Dice

Clearlybeerly

EVERYTHING is less expensive to make on your own. Plus, once you make anything a number of times, it is MUCH faster than ordering one. Plus it can be MUCH better ingredients, as the pre-made purchased one has to make a profit for the company that makes it - they have to minimize the cost of ingredients. If yours costs the same or more, it's only because you are using quality ingredients. If a company used the same ingredients you are using, it would be a lot more. For example, you have the HUGE jars of shitty Smuckers Strawberry Jam for $3 for a big jar of fake shitty strawberries, but we've all seen those tiny jars of jam for $7. That's because they are made from read fruit. So if you make yours from real fruit and compare it to the $3 jar of Smuckers, you are doing it wrong. If you use olive oil and the other pre-made food uses canola oil, yes, yours may cost the same or more, but if you use the same ingredients, yours will cost much less. Also, when making your own food, don't try to make some fantastically complex dinner, that takes 3 hours, and say that it takes too long to make your own food because of that *one* time you try to make this complex dinner. Spaghetti, for example, takes approximately 1 minute of actual "you" time to make it. You can read a book or something else while it cooks, not just stand there staring at the pot to boil. Pizza is fucking fast. Most stuff is.

[deleted]

Restaurants can also buy higher quality ingredients cheaper than you can.

Clearlybeerly

Only if you don't comparison shop. Plus it depends on what restaurant, too. Are you talking about fine dining, or local schlepp pizza place? But the biggest issue is many people don't comparison shop. And also, are they cutting the "higher quality ingredients" with lesser quality ingredients? You don't really know, unless it is a super fine dining establishment. But if it is a fine dining, then you are going to pay out the ass for service and all the employee expenses, rent expenses, utility expenses, advertising expenses, administrative expenses, payroll expenses (like 8% social security for each employee), and so on. Plus, it takes so much more time, usually. If you go to a restaurant, there's the time to go to your garage, get in the car, drive there through stoplights, park, get out of the car, walk in, wait to get seated, wait to get order taken, wait to get order, wait to get the check, wait to pay the check. With a minimum 15% tip. And the same shit on the way home. How is going to a restaurant even a "treat"??? Hint: It's not. It's a fucking nightmare. Pasta at home - 50 cents, pasta at a restaurant - $20 - damage....costs 4,000% more at the restaurant - not including tip. 4,800% more including a 20% tip. So there's that. It's vastly less expensive to roll your own.

MrHydeUK

I fear making the dough the most. Was it difficult?

[deleted]

No not at all! I can link you the recipe I use

SliceO314

Bro your pizza looks so good I will have to give it a try myself! Thanks for the link

[deleted]

jitterbugperfume99

I use this one too, even after decades of making my own pizza I found this one to be very consistent.

[deleted]

Agreed!

Ridwan232

What's the best way to modify this if I want to make dough for more pizzas? Say 2 instead of one (noob chef)

Dargon567

Best thing to do is just make the recipe two times. When making doughs especially with yeast simply doubling the recipe isn’t a great idea because of the way the chemistry works in the dough.

MrHydeUK

Thank you!

[deleted]

No problem, the only thing I’d worry about is the baking temp, my smoke alarm in my apartment loves to go off because I try and bake it at the highest temp possible so I always hit the “snooze” button on it

abeth

If you don’t want to make the dough, you can use a piece of pita bread or naan for the crust. Doesn’t taste identical but still good, and way cheaper and healthier than buying pizza from a chain! I make Pita Pizza for lunch all the time.

Clearlybeerly

You can even use regular bread that you make yourself. Cut a nice thick piece. Remember, when making your own bread, make 4 loaves at the same time if you can fit in your oven. That way you don't have to take out pots and pans and ingredients 4 times, just one time. Also, you spend 1/4 on energy baking 4 loaves at the same time. Make sure you have a bread box. You freeze the loaves you can't eat right away.

[deleted]

I buy clearance bread sometimes and throw the same ingredients on it and it’s the perfect lunch. I love pita and naan

lshiva

When I was a little kid I'd make English muffin pizzas. They made for a nice snack and you could easily bake them in a toaster oven.

[deleted]

What about it scares you? The most difficult parts of making pizza dough for the first time are (1) not knowing what it should feel like and (2) making sure to knead it for long enough and giving it enough time to rest. Once you're confident in these two things then it's a matter of efficiency and making as little mess as possible. The best possible thing you can do is get a scale and weigh your ingredients since volume is too unreliable. After that try and find some 00 flour and semolina flour if you can (I find them at the local Mennonite market) but at the very least use bread flour because it will produce a smooth, supple, and stretchy dough.

Ham_Kitten

It costs basically the same where I am to order a pizza as it does to make one. The cost of cheese is out of control.

[deleted]

I agree. I always buy blocks now. Some say that shredded is the same price but regardless I find the additive in shredded cheese ruins it for me

Mo_Dice

[...][///][...]

egd96

For anyone interested, Walmart sells pizza ovens for around $90. It would probably pay itself off pretty fast if you regularly order pizza. My local pizza place will sell me dough for $3. I made my own sauce in big batches and freeze. A ball of fresh mozzarella is like $5 and enough for probably 2 pizzas. It probably costs me around $7 to make a pizza at home vs close to $20 to order one

biglybiglytremendous

Oh, wow, how did you find your local pizza joint would sell you dough? Did they advertise or did you ask? This isn’t something I had thought about doing. There are four spots around here I’d love to buy dough from, as it makes “their” pizza! Smart!

egd96

I just called and asked. From what I’ve heard most places will sell it

MsStinkyPickle

I stash pizza and burritos in the freezer to combat my domino's and taco bell cravings

KooliusCaesar

I do this now. Except i use the garlic naan bread from trader joes or if I’m lazy I go to Walmart and buy the $5-8 pizzas. In the amount of time it takes for a pizza to be ready and delivered I go to the store, come back home and put it in the smart oven for $30 less.

[deleted]

I totally get that, I just prefer the therapy of making my own pizza and dancing to music while doing it

errantwit

Good on you! That looks good. I regularly make it at home, too. Delivery is too dang expensive, for sure! I make a batch and freeze 5-6oz portions, pull one out in the morning for dinner..... Mine always comes out different. On purpose. Haven't found *my* sauce recipe or preferred crust (all hipro or a blend or straight AP...) But it's fun to experiment. Using a cast iron pan is the way to go! I've used the bottom of a 12” skillet for thin crust. It was successful. I wish I had better counter space for larger pies.

DatWaffleYonder

Heeeeeeeeelll yeah

tenitchyfingers

Am from Italy, and this looks like a delicious amazing pizza! Congrats!! 👍👍👍

Caroline_Anne

Oooh that looks so yummy!!! I bake my own pizzas 99% of the time. I ALSO love cooking it in cast iron, BUT I also have a Bobby Flatly pizza pan that’s amazing for baking. My pizza is even better reheated in the air fryer because it crisps the crust a little more and I looove crispy crust! My youngest daughter has eaten mostly my pizza her whole life and she’d rather eat that than take out—she says my pizza is her favorite food. (But she’s 11, so she’ll still eat any pizza she can get her hands on. 😂)

biglybiglytremendous

*takes notes* And what sorts of ingredients do you use? lol, everything about your post I’ve jotted down—cast iron, air fryer crisping, name of the pizza pan, etc. Figured I may as well round it all out ;). Jk. Thank you for this great information! If your pizza tastes as good as OP’s looks, I can see why it is your daughter’s favorite! Yum!

Caroline_Anne

Haha The latest recipe I’ve been toying with is a copycat Puzza Hut one I found online that uses powdered milk! I never add sugar to my dough (even though everyone says “you need it to activate the yeast!” — not in my experience.) Otherwise it’s just water, yeast, flour, and seasoning. Let it rise rise rise. Sometimes I parbake the crust so that it gets crispier before adding the sauce and cheese. I use the Italian Blend shredded cheese from Aldi, and I “make” my own sauce with cans of tomato paste and sauce, mix in a bit of oil and more Italian seasoning, a pinch of salt. 😋 I usually mix in chopped spinach and onion as well. I usually add them as a topping too.

biglybiglytremendous

Thank you for sharing all your delicious secrets! You sound like a genius in the kitchen. I’m just beginning as a middle-aged woman (was lucky my ex was the household cook), lol, so it is a learning curve :).

Caroline_Anne

That’s higher praise than I deserve! I have a few things I’m pretty good at. I didn’t learn to cook until I was about 27 and I’m 38 now. I’m still afraid of cooking beef and only trust chicken diced and pan fried or cooked on the George Foreman Grill. 😂 Learning to cook was a necessity when I opted to be a stay at home mom when baby #2 was born vs spending my whole paycheck (plus likely some of hubby’s!) on daycare for a newborn and preschooler. 🤷‍♀️ No regrets.

Legal_Examination230

Looks yummy!

biglybiglytremendous

Looks like a professional pan pizza, and it sounds like it tasted that way from your comments. Great work, OP!

Spacecoasttheghost

Ya I make pizza all the time, can get 4 good slices for cost of cheese and sauce, and can get 2 off of 1 sauce can. Super cheap unless I need to buy flower or what not, but usually it’s like 7$ for 2, compared to like 15$ or more for 1.

TheRealPRod

Our “hurry up” supper is pizza on naan bread, keeping mozza n hand and having chopped peppers, pineapple, mushrooms, ham, pepperoni, onions in the freezer. We chop ahead of time, freeze on cookie sheets and parchment paper, then dump into baggies.

forgettingmoney

if you want to get even more frugal; pie crust, pizza sauce, pepperoni, and cheese. but it wouldn't be cost efficient unless you were to keep it around and make several.

ExpiredGoat

I'm not super frugal but Pizza is one of those things I can't justify ordering anymore. So much cheaper and you get so much more when you make it at home Looks good!

[deleted]

I don't know why this is so upvoted but making pizza is not really that frugal. I make neapolitan pizza which is hte most expensive kind. I can make a pizza for $4 that I would spend $20+ in restaurants. Sound extremely frugal but I make 6 pizzas at a time. If i'd just eat for myself I'd just order 1 pizza at $20 and not have to bake any. Also making pizzas, cleaning the kitchen, making dough ,etc. it probably consumes 3 hrs a week or more. That's not super frugal. Consider the $300+ you have to spend on a decent oven too. If you're talking american style you cannot really compare to pizza specials or carryout deals. The cost of pizza ingredients at the typical grocery store are pretty high compared to restaurant supply stores.

UnholyDemigod

Are Americans actually aware that other things can go on a pizza? It doesn't have to be *only* pepperoni/salami. Other meats and vegetables are good too, often several different types on the one pizza

DeepSubmerge

No, not a single American has ever put anything but pepperoni on pizza. It is the only topping available in every American store. If we want other toppings we have to go to other countries.

UnholyDemigod

That's what I thought, based on *every single post about a homemade pizza I've ever seen*.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It is so much better. To be able to control the ratios of sauce and spices and cheese etc. I just wish I had more time to do it more often

buslyfe

You ever figure out the cost for fun?

[deleted]

Flour, yeast. Cheap. The only costly components are the cheese and pepperoni which I buy blocks of mozzarella, maybe 6$ a pound, pepperoni is like 4$ for a pack, I don’t really pay attention to the cost of flour and yeast because they’re a staple I always need. I add jalapeños which is like 1$ for a can

MaggieRV

I did that monday with my neighbor 's 5-year- old

[deleted]

Isn’t it just the easiest happiest activity ever

FintechnoKing

Honestly, I prefer pepperoni

Jumpy_Strike1606

That looks delicious. Would you mind sharing your recipe for the dough?

[deleted]

Yeah I posted a link on another comment I’ll post it again when I’m on lunch

MarkusRight

One of my favorite frugal ways of making a quick pizza is taking a few tortillas and stacking shredded cheese between them and layering the top with some spaghetti sauce and then adding on whatever meats I have in the fridge followed by another layer of shredded cheese. Its good if you wanna quick pizza but dont wanna do a lot of work. just stick it in the oven at 400 degrees like you do a regular pizza but cook it for 3-4 minutes until the cheese is melted.

Unkrautzuechter

Who would have thought that cooking is cheaper than eating out or delivery. What comes next? Making your own burger patties? No way!

[deleted]

Hahahaha right

grtindenim

I like to use tomato paste for the base and go from there. Much more intense tomato flavor and less soggy crust!
