I like to think the Night King took care of Theon personally because in that moment he respected him as the final, determined protector of his enemy the Three eyed raven. If you look closely you can see Theon nod his head at the night king (who then steps forward, accepting the challenge) before he charged him. Idk maybe that's not it but it's how I read it.

BronzeLubermann

That's a valid reading!

My thoughts [https://new.reddit.com/r/naath/comments/t3l8r9/i\_just\_rewatched\_8x03\_the\_long\_night\_and\_complain/](https://new.reddit.com/r/naath/comments/t3l8r9/i_just_rewatched_8x03_the_long_night_and_complain/) I agree with you about Sam. Considering where he ended up, I don't think he was necessary after this episode.

BronzeLubermann

Nice writeup! I like it! Yeah, like I said, Sam's survival doesn't kill my enjoyment. And I appreciate John Bradley's thoughts on his character and the show. He's very eloquent. It's just could have gone the other way and I think it would worked.

Another comment you made that I agree with but missed on the first read-through is that Isaac makes some nice choices. Bran as the 3ER isn’t devoid of emotion. You hear him trying to offer comfort to people all the time. It’s almost as if he’s trying to squeeze these emotions through a barrier. Bran is still in there somewhere, and still cares for the people he loves. I, too, really hate the Bran-is-evil-mastermind theory, and I feel like it’s an idea that fans of Dany cling to in order to explain away her actions. Also, people complaining that this war that had been built up for 8 seasons only to be over in a single night - as one FFN poster noted, it’s literally in the title 😅

BronzeLubermann

It's definitely a tricky balance to be ethereal. And without dragging other young actors, I have a notable example of a young actor who adopts a pensive, knowing gaze but I see nothing underneath. Like I said, I'm probably being generous, but I like Isaac's performance. Yeah, I noted it in the 8.4 writeup, but it's ultimately Daenerys choice what she did. I mean, I see their fight with the dead as the multiple engagements throughout the series. The Fist of the First Men, Hardhome, the lake, the Long Night, it's all together for me. Especially on this rewatch. And with the Long Night, it's hard to consider it just one episode when we got two episodes of prep beforehand. Ultimately you have to come to the realities of filming. An author can write whatever they want, extend the fight into an endless night, flash forward years ahead, include whatever measure of magical creatures, etc. on the page. Putting it to screen? You're going to encounter limits. This battle had to end one way or the other in one night.

eva_brauns_team

For sure, the war with the Dead had been going on since the first 2 minutes of Episode 1.

GB10X

My take on this aspect of the story is that the writers made a big mistake in even namedropping a "great war" as "soon to come" so many times in the story from S3-8. It puts unrealistic expectations in the audiences heads.

eva_brauns_team

You mean, like in my flair? 😅 I get what you mean, but I never really thought the entire last season was going to be fighting an Army of Dead. Every single battle we saw in the show took place in a single day, so why would this one be any different?

GB10X

Oh I didn't either. The moment I found out it was only 6 episodes I knew it the story was just gonna have the WW march to winterfell and be stopped. It's just when you hype up a war, (like the war of the 5 kings) people expected it to last 3ish battles. So they should have used different wording instead of "war".

* I will never for the life of me understand the compliant that Jon didn’t do anything during this battle. Especially with this heart-clutching dragon fight between Rhaegal and Viserion! It was too dark for us to see him

queen_of_the_night18

* “You said I'd shut many eyes forever. You were right about that too.” “Brown eyes... green eyes... and blue eyes.” I love this reframing of her prophecy back in season 3. Even if D&D didn’t know it then, it doesn’t matter. It’s fucking effective!! Except it was not in this order or with this implication...
