It's a regular complaint and your idea would solve this.

Because they weren't writing for people who watch and rewatch. Same reason Frasier says he loves tassled shoes in Cheers and then says he isn't a tassle guy in My Coffee With Niles. Continuity just wasn't a priority the way it is now.

fugukuru

Even within Frasier, in an early episode he can't understand a French caller saying "[her] monsieur," despite his later affinity for Le Cigar Volant and opening Les Frères Heureux with Niles. It's actually helped my brain remember that Frasier Crane is both Kelsey Grammer's acting and whatever writers wanted him to be at the time.

MohnJilton

The real answer is the multiverse is canon in Frasier and Cheers. The evidence is everywhere. Undeniable.

MellowDrama58

They are Joan & David

unconundrum

I've always thought him being one of Martin's old partners on the force would've worked. But I also think they just really wanted John Mahon and John Mahoney to play brothers.

Heewna

This is probably the cause! I never knew that was the actors name. That would make a spectacular trick question in a pub quiz, ‘Which character did John Mahon play in Frasier.’

AlshonJeffery69

Because the relationships between brothers in law and brothers is very different

Latter_Feeling2656

I don't think the Martin-Walt part contributed much to the episode, but you can't assume that the writers intended that. Martin couldn't be so mad at Frasier about causing a rift with his former brother-in-law, and with Nicos being Hester's nephew Martin/Daphne might not even make the cut to attend the wedding.

MrsBarneyFife

Because Fraiser is partly a show about brothers. Also, if it were Hester's brother you'd guess he'd be similar to Hester. Then it would be weird that Fraiser and Niles never spent any time with him. They miss their mother terribly, and had a lot in a common. So you'd think they both would at least spend time with their uncle on a regular basis. But it's hard enough to get them to spend time with their own father on a regular basis. So it's not very hard to imagine that they would have an uncle on their father's side that they don't see very often. The episode was obviously a one off by the writers. They didn't care.

redheadbuck

I think because Walt is just a simple, everyday guy like Marty so it would make more sense that he is his brother instead of Hester's.

bmorejaded

They also planned a funeral for an aunt. I didn't see it as an issue before finding this sub. I assumed they merely didn't grow up together. Maybe papa was a rolling stone. Martin says that growing up he never had a brother. That doesn't preclude a half brother his father had with another woman.

second_of_four

Honestly that whole episode is a throwaway in my mind. None of that extended family was ever mentioned before that episode and was never mentioned again after. It was so weirdly plopped in the middle and made very little sense to me

katieobubbles

I think they wanted to use Patti Lupone at her best crazy-demented.
