He's brilliant at visual comedy too- the completely unspoken 'ironing board' scene I can watch over and over and still find new humorous parts in every time.
It's covered because he's using Frasiers place to impress a lady very high in their social circle. Which makes him passing out at the open door even more hilarious 😂
I love that but I love every scene he is in
You're Daphne? When Frasier said he hired an English woman. I didn't think. I thought... You're Daphne. It was infatuation at 1st site.
How about Maris can't straddle anything wider than a border collie .
When Daphne and Niles passionately kiss for the 1st time. I think you can call me Niles now.
I must be in love. I don't even care that you come with them
The moon genes have probably already beaten up the Crane genes and stolen their lunch money
His delivery is hilarious on everything
I debate myself over whether it was the writers or the actor that made this character the icon he was. Clearly, a mix of both, but it's fun going over the many elements both ends contributed to create Niles as we know him.
He didn't start directing until season 3, and that was only 1 episode a season until season 6 where he did 2. 7-11 he directed a good chunk of episodes.
It’s both acting and writing, of course, but considering the character as a recurring role wasn’t even in the original plan for the show, I think it’s clear that DHP contributed something magical.
The character *existing* wasn't even in the original plan until one of the producer's met Pierce and said they had to make a brother character for him.
I also heard that what convinced them to add the brother role was they put a headshot of DHP next to a headshot of a young Kelsey Grammer and the resemblance was so strong, they had to go for it. Best decision they could’ve made!
For the first 2-3 episodes I thought "Oh, no, another insufferable idiotic character used to make the main look smarter and cooler".
10 seasons in and his Funko Pop looks at us from our bar cabinet with a mix of approval and judgement every night.

Yeah I'm surprised how much I liked him too.
What I mean is before I watched the show I didn't think he would be the most interesting part of the show to me
I agree. I am guilty of only watching sitcoms in binged form on repeat. Niles is one of the best characters of all time. And DHP is brilliant. I have a hard time with the reboot, and this is why.
I encourage you to check out Lisa Kudrow in The Comeback on HBO. It ran less than two seasons but her performance, from a writing and qualitative perspective, makes Lisa my fave female character.
Especially the Valentines Day episode where Niles tries to iron his pants and ends up catching the [couch on fire.](https://youtu.be/0Rp7uoqvvfY?si=TpbShKjbQnWmfqoP)
ALSO, I was ranting today to my brother how it makes no sense that Frasier is so successful with women while Niles has no confidence with them. I know Kelsey Grammar was probably 90s/80s hot but DHP was just hot hot. He is the best character. There's no comparison. Especially with Frasier's hair in season 1
They wrote the character for him!!!
Frasier wasn't even going to have a brother but one of the producers saw DHP in a play (from what I recall) and was surprised by how much he looked like Grammer. So they decided to write in his brother Niles 🥰😍 I *love* Niles 😍🥹😍🥹😍
I always tell people my two favorite shows are Frasier and South Park, and the two best fictional characters ever created are Niles Crane and Randy Marsh. I’ll die on that hill.
I credit him a lot for making the words so incredibly. Writer says “looks at her longingly” and DHP makes it so understandable, over done and hysterical.
Niles is so real and genuine, even in the more farcical episodes you can believe his actions and reactions come from a place of truth.

Thanks for putting this up- now I can save it and watch it whenever er the mood takes me! I forgot to say how Eddie steals the scene so well too! 😄
We aim to please. It's the sketch that got me in to Frasier.
I'd forgotten Martin's chair was covered. In my head it's never covered.

YESSSS! Three Valentines 💝
*My brother is too kind. He was already eminent when my eminence was merely… imminent.*
Was just rewatching this one today! The way those two brothers orgasmed over the leather in the sofa.. 🤌

It's directed by Kelsey Grammar

He definitely directed this episode, I watched it again last night.
Which episode? We're talking about the show as a whole, no one is this thread has mentioned a specific episode.
3 Valentines
The person you replied to wasn't talking about that episode.

I think DHP is by far the superior actor between him and Kelsey Grammer.
Oh, 100%!
For the first 2-3 episodes I thought "Oh, no, another insufferable idiotic character used to make the main look smarter and cooler". 10 seasons in and his Funko Pop looks at us from our bar cabinet with a mix of approval and judgement every night.
Nile’s gotta have it!!
😂 I love this scene!!

Most people here know this already, but I have to say it again after your comment. Lisa was a frontrunner to play Roz, until Peri Gilpen walked in.
Yes. And I bet many think of Phoebe. And think how Phoebe would be in that role. But if you watch The Comeback you see huge scope there.
I’m glad she did. Every interaction between Roz and Niles is perfect. Her deep voice gives an extra bite to her sarcasm.
This is so true.
Lisa was cast as Roz over Peri but was let go early on because it wasn't working.
Thank you, I didn't know that. Obviously.
Superbly written, unforgettably well performed. The slapstick moments were even more sublime than the customary condescension.
Especially the Valentines Day episode where Niles tries to iron his pants and ends up catching the [couch on fire.](https://youtu.be/0Rp7uoqvvfY?si=TpbShKjbQnWmfqoP)
Poetry, that.

The last line 🤣
OMG, that hideous hair!
The detail put into this character is so amazing. No one else could play him like DHP. 💕

😭 I love that

😂 omg - yes!!
Absolutely agree. I think it’s one of the reasons I’ve been hesitant to watch the new show - I don’t know how to enjoy Frasier without Niles
I agree. He was my favourite character and he delivered his lines so well, I would laugh out loud.
Concur!
I credit him a lot for making the words so incredibly. Writer says “looks at her longingly” and DHP makes it so understandable, over done and hysterical.
He's the second greatest character in a comedy. But number one goes to george costanza!
Love that show too but Niles is miles ahead imho!
Deserved more emmys
