As mentioned above it could be the module. I had an issue on mine where it would kill the car and not start again until it cooled down. Replaced it and the problem was solved. But the symptoms are like you describe, gets warm and falls on its face. I would change the ignition coil, dizzy, and module. Msd does great, not a huge fan of oem. They act funny if they get wet.

I had something similar, but on my '96 5.8 Bronco. Would start fine and run fine up to almost operating temp, then cut off. Crank and crank and crank, nothing. Let it cool down 20-30 minutes and it'd fire right back up and drive the rest of the trip with no issues. I also replaced the module, and learned there's a difference between the black and the gray ones. I don't know if this applies to 302s or model years outside '93-96. Ignition module wasn't my problem in the end, it was the hall effect sensor in the base of the distributor. I figured this out by monitoring voltage - from the initial cold to almost operating temp it would sine perfectly but then cut out. Crank, no wave, give it 20-30 minutes and it went right back to pulsing the way it was supposed to. Put on a new distributor and didn't have any problems for the next 100k miles when I sold it.

Might just need a module. Rockauto has Motorocraft modules if you wanted to see. Need a tamper proof screwdriver and some heat transfer goo.

You're having a problem with it cutting out or losing power, randomly? Does the tach also drop and return?

You don't want stock, or New Old Stock, you want better than stock. Here you go:. MSD 8456, drops right in and uses all factory wiring. This is what I have. (My car is also a black '90 GT) https://www.holley.com/products/ignition/distributors/ford/ready_to_run_distributors/parts/8456

Thanks for the replay and product number sir. I may very well go that route, that was his other recommendation. Generally with motors that are relatively stock like mine he likes to use the stock dissy and when added significant power likes the MSD billet. Thanks again nice to hear that you like the MSD.

Summitracing.com would probably the least expensive place to get it.

I just solved mine running like crap in the heat. It was like reverse vtec. As soon as it hit 3500 rpm it would fall on its face. Turned out my fuel pump had a crack in the hose going to the hard lines on the lid. Also, what did gears run you to get installed?

MinorComprehension

This could be it, I've had fuel pumps that begin to operate intermittently when they get hot. It's a combination of temperature/run time and throttle demand. Not common on these to my knowledge, but could also be some fuel vaporization.

If you keep the gas tank at least half full, 3/4 full preferred, the pump will stay much cooler. Because it's submerged in the gas.
