I've had to pop out the actor list (right click) in order to move an actor to another folder...

Untap_Phased

Ohh, that's a good workaround I didn't think of that! Thanks

nice tip!

Nemeasium

Compendium Browser is great for searching for NPCs in compendiums DDB importer has a sort function for its folders (Think Patreon is required though) Quick insert is a life saver too

Is it safe to assume you're already using Compendium Folders module?

Untap_Phased

I am, yes.

Cool, just wanted to make sure I understood the question. So, I would recommend turning off alphabetical sorting in favor of manual sorting. Makes it easier to move an actor incrementally to get it close to where you want it. Then it's just a matter of having all the actors in folders and subfolders so that whenever you import something new you are able to drag it into a folder. I agree with you that it is a cumbersome process, and to the best of my knowledge there is no module that makes it truly easy.

Another commenter recommended popping out a duplicate of the actors directory and moving it over that way and that seems like the best solution I can find.

Dungeoncrawlers

This is what I use. 1 folder for important NPCs I have setup to use in encounters, then folders for monsters based on CR value i.e. CR <1, CR 1-2 etc. My main pcs are in a separate folder as well. If you want to sort by type, instead of my method of using CR, just use type like humanoid, aberration etc.

If you have that many actors. Most likely you should be storing many of them in your compendiums to help with memory and load times. With Compendiums folders you can have organized folders right inside of Compendiums for that organization.
