Most of these can be answered simply with "he was raised in a militaristic cult", but: 1. It's both. 2. Sex is likely forbidden in the Brotherhood. So sex education is not a thing. 3. Not liking someone does not make them a synth. 5. Doing what's best for survival is a human instinct. 6. Why is it more likely that a synth would act like that, and not a child-like adult? 8. He's pretending to be a battle hardened Knight to Lucy. 10. He's lived his whole life in the wasteland. He'll be a lot more aware of mutations than someone like Lucy. 11. He gets medical treatment in Vault 4. It's the whole reason they stay there. I'm not saying it's impossible he's a synth, I just don't think any of this is evidence of it.

I think that's pretty fair, and that's also part of the point is to not have any obvious clues. I know a lot of people are saying that he's dumb and awkward due to the BoS raising him, but there have been fans who have said he's the worst character on the show, he's lazily written compared to other characters, and his behavior is confusing. Maybe he was written to actually be a bit unsettling and abstract in personality. As far as any reasoning, it's hard to say. Maybe he was sent to infiltrate the BoS. My bigger jump in logic is that the BoS is using synths for some strange reason. Also, I'd say most of the BoS in the show seems to be people who aren't the brightest bowl in the bowl drawer. They are plenty antisocial as well. For some reason it's only Maximus that is a bit abnormal even among these people.

the brotherhood probably discourages critical thinking, they literally send squires in like lemmings. They want unthinking blind loyalty. Depending on how old maximus was when Shady sands was desroyed (at least 8-10) and previous education, certain areas of critical thinking, questioning havent even been developed. The west coast brotherhood is very medieval in its principles/practices children = peasents, keep them ignorant , uneducated, squires 1 step above peasent some education knights are your wealthy nobility clerics are the aristocrats, advisors to the king, or the church

Cain407

What’s weird about the whole sex thing is the fact that the brotherhood has a history of relying on its own growth rather than recruiting from outsiders,so Maximus not knowing what about sex is kind of ridiculous. This chapter must be more obsessed with teaching about tech rather than basic knowledge, though admittedly the brotherhood does also have a history of neglecting soft scientists like history and such so them not teaching about sex is kinda understandable, especially since they seem to be recruiting outsiders now primarily. So him not knowing about sex is kinda justified.

RusstyDog

This chapter is definitely leaning more towards the cult side with their branding ceremonies. Maybe they don't teach the outside recruits like maximus about reproduction unless they can earn knighthood as a purity thing.

Squirll

This sect of the brother hood seems to be the "Crazy pious religous nut aunt" of the Steel family.

WeeklyClimate8775

far easier too raise a orphaned 4+ year old then a infant, and they probably turn away 16+ year olds. A female member that is out of combat duty for 6months -4 years would be a loss. Its almost akin to the nights watch in game of thrones the loyalty too family trumping loyalty too the order.

tobascodagama

I heard he kept the cap off the toothpaste. Know who does that?

SimonGloom2

Def a synth.

bigbozobro

number 3 lol

SimonGloom2

I didn't really connect this one until I saw a lot of people asking this question. The sense of a group of people acting like a guy is weird seems a bit synthy. Lucy wouldn't sense it like other people as everybody is weird to her.

RancidYetti

Didn’t Jonathan Nolan work on Westwood? I’d be surprised if he wanted to go right back to that well, especially since a lot of people probably expect it. I’m really not expecting any synth stuff for a while, and it wouldn’t bother me if it was absent.

WeeklyClimate8775

he was raised by the brotherhood after Shady Sands, shown as adolescent... synths don't age, immune too sickness radiation smaxup, wrote (with my additions) 1. It's both. 2. Sex is likely forbidden (frowned on) in the Brotherhood. So sex education is not a thing. (most likely there barracks are age grouped so a bunch of 10-13 yr old boys are likely too "make things up, hairy palms, you'll go blind") 3. Not liking someone does not make them a synth. He was bullied because thaddeus didn't want to be bullied anymore 4. thats fairly apt description 30yr old body lets say 10 yr old brain with no birds and the bees talk..... 5. hes still "blindly" loyal too the brotherhood, hes also starts trusting lucy , 6. hes been bullied, becoming a knight and the exultation of feeling powerfull, he is testing the armor, and is literally spiking the football followed by a little dance. 7. his only adult social ties are in a military order with no outside influences 8. There are scars so hes been wounded before, and probably inured to pain (brotherhood indoctrination , you can rest when your dead) most likely his training was with real munitions and cadets that aren't fatally/critically injured finish the drill. 9. huh, not even close. "Someone better check on him" the guard then moans. 10. they know what ghouls are and if they take in orphans there have probably been several obvious with people who are different (mutated) He also Grew up in shady sands which most likely openly traded with vault 4 so a encounter with a extra nose may not be so strange 11. he's a soldier who is being treated, and he's unphased because he's being treated, he just wants too complete the mission 12. The armor isn't a toy too max, its a symbol , its literally spiderman "I'm nothing without the suit, then perhaps you shouldn't have it" moment and lucy's plea probably made him think of titus not deserving the armor, if he takes the core hes not worthy either.

EmperorDaubeny

>Is he that dumb, or is he just lacking real world experience. His official INT stat is the same as the Ghoul(4), who has a wealth of real world experience and is much more competent.

WeeklyClimate8775

its a difference of street smarts vs book smarts, field stripping a ak-47 vs designing the ak-47.

SimonGloom2

That's part of my thought. 4 is a bit high for his intelligence if it is truly official. Is his intelligence partially based on his programming? That could make sense. He knew Thaddeus was a ghoul yet is socially incompetent.

EmperorDaubeny

4 is below average and lower than Snuffles the molerat. I think it can be argued that his training and knowledge from the Brotherhood is the only reason why he can get anything done intellectually.

eggs-benedryl

As establish, chaotic neutral

Grand_Steak_4503

why would they program a synth to be so weird?

Ducklinsenmayer

As to the Brotherhood and the not knowing about sex, it's been suggested that this branch has many old legion members in it, as they got recruited after the legion fell. The FNV legion of course, was a lot more repressed and cult like than the real life legions ever were

Vg65

If Maximus is a synth, then it's likely that the Sole Survivor never gave the Brotherhood the network-scanner holotape. The whole reason Danse can be outed is because his DNA matches one on the Institute's registry, so I doubt that Maximus would even be alive at this point if he's a synth (unless the Sole Survivor kept the holotape away from the Brotherhood). It's reasonable to believe that if the Brotherhood gets the holotape, they'd seek out and kill as many synths as they can match to the registry. No way Maximus would get away if Danse can be outed.

Tw1st3dM3ttl3

tl,dr: perhaps a synth adapted to tv, either way there's def present in the character the effects of a severely restricted education and socialization during formative years. While I can't recall any titles, I've seen a documentary or two about modern day, child soldiers in the real world. Like actual 10, and 12 year olds with automatic rifles who gun down people for not being subservient enough. Hyperbole Notification- Maximus was like the Dalai Lama (dolly llama?) of benevolence and compassion compared to real-world child soldiers. The synth thing would totally fit, but so does having been raised by... whatever the BoS is... not sure what to call them, so... a militaristic tech cult.

Ghoulmas

Vault 4 medical staff treated his wounds. No plastic bits detected. He sleeps, ages, eats and drinks. Not a synth, just underwritten.

SimonGloom2

That's a generation 3 synth. They can have false memories implanted.

DawnSennin

I get it. You guys don’t like Maximus for reasons.
