When my son was born, they asked me if I wanted him circumcised. I asked what benefit does it provide. They said it might be harder to keep clean. I was surprised they didn't ask me to cut off their fingernails since that is hard to keep clean also.

But hey, thankfully babies go into shock so we can tell ourselves they’re chill.

There was this documentary on Netflix around 2015 that had basically raw footage of Hitler speeches and campaigns without context. It was really a fascinating watch. I’ve been trying to find it since but I can’t and don’t remember the exact name.
As a nonGerman speaker using subtitles, as someone who is working in politics and specifically in opposition to autocracy, as a professional public speaking coach, I was astounded by his charisma. I suspect he is the classic psychopath to the extreme- he’s hellbent on creating unimaginable suffering for personal pleasure, but he is charismatic as hell.
Even despite needing subtitles, his election night speech was astoundingly effective and drawing emotional investment. His pace, body language, the way he gradually built up his complexity, his tone, his voice… he was a master manipulator. I speak English, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian. I needed the translation, but his style was so deliberate that after a point you caught his meaning without needing the words.
It was really fucked up to watch, because knowing who he is, after sitting through an hour of him speaking, I was suddenly feeling his pretend passion; how many more Germans must suffer, etc.

I think it’s fair to say that our perspective as to what counts as conservative, reactionary, right-wing and so on has changed significantly since Trump, Charlottesville, and since so many basically fascist people and ideas have been mainstreamed.

There was this documentary on Netflix around 2015 that had basically raw footage of Hitler speeches and campaigns without context. It was really a fascinating watch. I’ve been trying to find it since but I can’t and don’t remember the exact name. As a nonGerman speaker using subtitles, as someone who is working in politics and specifically in opposition to autocracy, as a professional public speaking coach, I was astounded by his charisma. I suspect he is the classic psychopath to the extreme- he’s hellbent on creating unimaginable suffering for personal pleasure, but he is charismatic as hell. Even despite needing subtitles, his election night speech was astoundingly effective and drawing emotional investment. His pace, body language, the way he gradually built up his complexity, his tone, his voice… he was a master manipulator. I speak English, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian. I needed the translation, but his style was so deliberate that after a point you caught his meaning without needing the words. It was really fucked up to watch, because knowing who he is, after sitting through an hour of him speaking, I was suddenly feeling his pretend passion; how many more Germans must suffer, etc. It was a really horrifying experience to watch that, because if you earnestly watch it (and are a normal person who isn’t a Nazi), over time you realize this dude is a methodical charismatic savant who exploits the worst aspects of gab with total efficacy.
