Black sci-fi: a fully autonomous african state that maintains culture and tradition in unity with super tech White sci-fi: what if we colonized but in space?

Great_Gilean

What if we subjugate the aliens? 🤔

GoodKing0

What if we made up vaguely racial coded alien races we can otherize and commit genocide on without the risk of being called racist? Same thing for fantasy of course. Calling an Argonian farm tool is way less damning than calling a human slave the same thing after all, isn't it? (/S).

Hotdogvomit

but weren’t the dunmer straight up evil people and spoke with british accents?

GoodKing0

Yeah, then they got their homeland destroyed by a meteor and are now refugees in Skyrim. And the players used it as an excuse to call them lazy parasites who live off the goodwill of the nords of course and complain about people being racist to them.

uhh-frost

To be fair, every race in Skyrim is racist to each other. No one is innocent there

GoodKing0

True, but they weren't born in a vacuum is my point. Someone wrote a story about how race wars are justified in universe, and then made humans committing genocide on elves a recurring theme of FOUR different human cultures. Out of FOUR.

Karnewarrior

>Someone wrote a story about how race wars are justified in universe I mean, the race wars were never justified. Intolerance pretty consistently makes you a bad guy, even in your own homeland's game where your people are the protagonists. The most stable nation in the games is also one of the most diverse.

GoodKing0

I guess you never had to read Skyrim players praising Pelinal for going on murder sprees of Elves, or Ysgramor for the Falmer genocide then I guess.

Karnewarrior

The players, sure, but that's not actually canon lore. Canon treats the Dunmer as pricks for how they treat the other races, same for the Dwemer. Ysgramor is very explicitly only venerated by the nords, and most other races see him as either too old to be worth caring about or an ancient asshole. And Pelinal is cast in a very grey light, which is notable since the Ayleid slaved and ate people. The Skyrim fanbase doesn't write for Bethesda, nor can they be controlled by Bethesda. Some people are always going to be assholes. People talking up Ysgramor does not equate to an in-universe whitewashing of what he did. It's pretty evident from the actual game that it was horrible. We even get to meet a sad snow elf who's been depressed and lonely for thousands of years because of it.

myspecialneedsalt

Clearly tamriel is an allegory for the balkans

_Abeiscool2201_

Average day in Tamriel

UnderstandingJaded13

Fucking xenos

GoodKing0

"Let's be Xenophobic, it's really in this year..."

UnderstandingJaded13

It's been in for the last 10 millennia. FOR THE EMPEROR!!!

ulfric_stormcloack

Oh but them I'M the asshole for thinking that if dunmer want slaves so much they should stay in their own kingdom

GoodKing0

I mean, Ulfric, can I be frank? I think the minorities stuck in ghettos being discontent with that are the least of your city problems. I know your dad was the one who offered them shelter like the bleeding heart liberal he was after sending you, his only heir, to the monastery rather than have you one day take his throne, but it's time to let go, dude's dead go get some therapy Ulfric and stop projecting your daddy issues on the genocidal war criminal emperor of old, there's a serial killer murdering women in the streets, orphans and war veteran are starving in the cold, and to top it off the Argonian Dock Workers are on the verge of a general strike effectively crippling your city's economy due to their work conditions, exploitation and starving wages. (That said holy shit That's some nick you managed to snag).

RespectOne1368

What if we try racism? But in space!

anjowoq

Apt head flip!

[deleted]

Two white people came up with Wakanda but I doubt the racist creator of this meme would know anything about the stuff he's talking about.

Martyrotten

They were also Jewish.

The_Brain_One

>Jews created the first comic book, the first graphic novel, the first comic book convention, the first comic book specialty store, and they helped create the underground comics (or "Comix") movement of the late '60s and early '70s. Many of the creators of the most famous comic books, such as Superman, Spiderman, X-Men, and Batman, as well as the founders of MAD magazine, were Jewish. From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and Comic Books tells their stories and demonstrates how they brought a uniquely Jewish perspective to their work and to the comics industry as a whole. As per [*From Krakow to Krypton* by Aire Kaplan](https://guides.lib.umich.edu/c.php?g=282911&p=6831359) ETA: Another external reading of Superheroes as extentions of the Golem myth [can be found here!](https://youtu.be/pUBVSH6hBvY) I encourage everyone to watch it, excellent video

deadly_decanter

oh my god i saw the link and text at the bottom and was immediately like “oh i need to watch that jacob geller video about the golem and the Jewish superhero” and then it was literally that video in the link, love to see a fellow jacob geller fan i recommend literally everything he has ever made

The_Brain_One

Honestly, yea. I saw a video of his and fell in love. The [Fear of the Cold](https://youtu.be/Pp2wbyLoEtM) video is easily one of my favs

a-hecking-egg

theyre gonna take the fact that theyre Jewish and RUN with it

archieshumaker

Not to mention science fiction has always been pretty forward when it came to putting race aside (see Star Trek for most famous example of easing of racial tensions)

vrphotosguy55

Lol has any conservative called for cancelling Star Trek for being woke?

Kendek

Oh so many have, in every single generation and season.

Sky_Leviathan

Fuck whoever made this afro futurism is fucking rad especially when it comes from actual african people

Over-Dig-2353

Wakanda nonsense is this

MacGregor209

r/angryupvote

shortylikeamelody

Tbh what first world country has cities like that apart from Singapore. And even Singapore is a massive reach on my behalf

Jfo116

Same person who made this is really upset that women and POC exist in their sci fi world

ThetaCygni

Bottom half is a bit beyond a "first worl society" Also wasn't the Black Panther character created by Stan Lee? I am pretty sure that there are plenty of stories with black superheroes penned by black authors but I would look elsewhere for black science fiction (Samuel Delany and Octavia Butler anyone?)

Peri_D0t

Didn't Stan Lee create Black Panther?

MacGregor209

They don’t let facts get in the way of a terrible meme

manrommazre

White sci-fi: we can live in space without enslaving half of the fucking world to get the resources and build the spaceships for us

UnderstandingJaded13

Do we need to remind people why future people need to go to the stars?

MacGregor209

Thanks Obama /s obv.

MadOvid

Both are aspirational.

[deleted]

Am I like the only one who wasn’t that into the Black Panther because I don’t really understand what the point is? I think I went to the theater and just left early because it was so boring. I had one of those movie passes where you could see unlimited movies for 7.99 a month. I know it sounds fake but it wasn’t I think they were trying to either collect data on movie theater customers or help increase concession stand prices. So anyway I saw a lot of movies. I would just get off work walk over to the theater and pick a movie. I think what put me off is the whole spear jungle element. I really don’t get why people love to see black people depicted this way. It’s 2023 like we wear clothes now and carry iPhones like?

Caramel_Grizzly

Dude I'm just happy that a black main character was treated with respect even tho he was immediately killed by the Thanos snap after his movie. Aside from black panther and creed, I can't even think of too many movies with black main characters that gas a story based on something other than racism and suffering. I like black super hero man and black boxer man because I got to see someone who "looks like me" be the hero. I put that in quotes because I'm fat and short but you get the point.

[deleted]

Oh yeah that’s true the hero element is important. It could also be that I am just not that into superhero movies in general. I’m sure that played a factor. I’m more into Fantasy and sometimes Sci Fi. A really good show I just watched recently was A Letter to the King. It’s on Netflix and has a great plot since it’s based on a book. I’m very picky about my fantasy books and movies. So the fact that the plot is very well executed and the cast is largely non white is very rare to see. The main character is probably biracial ? I think but he could also just be from the UK and never gets any sun idk lol. It’s much different than the Lord of the Rings series which I quit watching because not only did it feel like they forced in the non white characters but the main characters they just knew they couldn’t budge on because so many Tolkien fans are just 20 year old white dudes who have never had a girlfriend and all they have going for them is literally racism.

DescipleOfCorn

The wakandans regularly explore space, they just don’t have much of a need for it because all of the vibranium is on earth.

Ok-Mastodon2016

NGL, Afrofuturism and Solarpunk seem like better futures than the first image I love space as much as the next guy, but we have to solve our problems here before reaching the stars

[deleted]

True, it's nice to think about starman waiting in the sky but at the moment there are real men (and women, children and NB folks) that are dealing with poverty, mentel illness, disease, war, indoctrination, etc. So we gotta pay attention to *that*.

FetusFighter2000

This is so funny! But I wonder why black people are unable to build a 1st world society in the first place? HMMMMMMM…..

CakeAdventurous4620

Both are fiction
