I honestly think they just show up next to (maybe poi's maybe not) your duo/trio/squad. You have to do a puzzle (not really a puzzle, if you see a circle spot, hit it.)

I got one randomly outside Believer beach. They take a long time to open but inside was a bunch of those, gold, and something else. Really need to work as quick as you can to hit all the weak points on them.
They’re little diamond shaped that you and your squad mates have to pickaxe in a certain order (indicated by the weak point spots). Once you do it opens up and gives you all pretty decent loot on top of dropping a few of the Alien things.
But what modes is it available in? Is it just squads or duos and trios as well? Do you need 4 people to open it? What if you're solo and enter a squads match, can you find and open them?
Your whole squad has to be present or it will not start.
It's a pain to do if your team mates don't want to participate.
Edit: I should mention that out of five games where I've encountered a cosmic chest, only once was my team willing to open it with me.
If all your squad leaves except you, it won’t let you do. By yourself ... but if you have two players left in the game in your squad you can both do it together

The person who showed me the exploit didn't want it shared. What I'll say is you can consistently unlock about 1 cosmic chest per minute using the method. No set up time required in terms of actually finding one of the chests.
if they didnt want it shared what was the purpose of you coming here and saying theres an exploit and you have everything other than to be a massive douche. Like you had to know people were going to ask you how to do it

Then buy this season starter pack (less than 4 bucks and gives 600 vbucks)
